Off to Looe for a weeks holiday 4th april, can anyone recommend any decent boats for a day trip, or is it worth taking beach caster for any pier or harbour fishing .

For boat fishing go down the shark fishing club on the quayside. They pretty much deal with all the boat bookings for the charter fleet there and are geared for holiday anglers, allowing individual bookings and providing kit. The fishing booked through the shark club is normally quite general with reef pollock and conger making up the mainstay, the fishing is usually good. You are unlikely to get more specialised fishing unless you book a charter boat for a party of anglers. Typically you will get half a days fishing for £20-25 and £40 for a full day. All depends on the tides as to what will be available. I've been out on a number of boats from Looe and never been disapointed with any of them.

As for shore fishing, plenty of options. Some decent rocky areas west of Looe. One to try is Talland bay, either side of the bay there are rocky points that fish into relatively deep water. Have caught a good amount of pollock, wrass, garfish, mackerel. Never managed a bass here but there are some. Either spinning with a dexter, feathers or using imitation sandeels should get you something. Float fished ragworm should get you a bite if all else fails.

 

Other areas include:

 

White rock (oposite bango pier) similar methods to Talland.

 

Whitsand bay (5 miles east of Looe)

The locals fish here, generally using beachcasters and tripods, typically morning or evening, especially if they correspond with a high tide. There are bass to be caught here.

You also have rame head at the eastern end of Whitsand. There is deep water here and a number of species to be had but it is fair old treck down and shouldn't be fished in bad weather.

 

Be carefull at all of the venues mentioned. You can get cut off by the tide at Whitsand. The Talland marks are generally ok but the same applies.
