To a certain extent it depends on what fish you are after. If you are after smallish carp, then 4-6lb straight through may be fine.

 

If you were after small fish, 12oz line all through might cause problems! Hence fish with, say 2 lb line on the reel, lighter on the hooklink.

 

A major benefit of this is if the line snaps, it's more likely to do so very close to the hook (less line for the fish to drag round).
