23 December (Part 2)

Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 1400 - 1600 Dull with low cloud and a little drizzle. AT 9ºC 6 Perch; Best: 2lb 6oz, 1lb 14oz. The rest all around ¾-1lb Bit of a gamble - though temps were well up on yesterday I was worried the water temperature wouldn't have caught up. My concerns were unfounded - and as it approached 4pm the switch was flicked for dinner and I had 5 fish in 5 casts. Could possible have had more - but a large pike chased the last one - making an unscuccesf

River Kennet - Thatcham   1900 - 0000   Warm, overcast and breezy. 17ºC (even at Midnight!) River at normal levels.   Blanked   Lovely balmy evening to be by the river amongst the bats (the air was thick with them!!! ) Very frustrating swim this!! On my 1st ever visit in July 2004 I had 3 fish from it; 7+ Carp, 8+ barbel and my PB barbel of 12.04. Went back a fortnight later and had a 7+ barbel. Thought at the time I'd found a great little hotspot. However I returned twice more that seas

River Kennet - Speen Moors   1200 - 1500   Cold and overcast - everywhere looked a picture covered in hoar frost - but it just made the line stick in the rings. Thatcham weather site hasn't got above -0.2ºC all day. WT a balmy 39ºF.   1 Chub 2lb 7oz, 1 Brown Trout 2lb 14oz   Somewhat surprised to get anything given the conditions (I had hoped it would warm up a bit!) Both fish on trotted maggot. Brownie in superb condition - & fought well above its weight - thought I'd connected w

Newbury AA Lake - Thatcham   1500 - 0900   Very breezy with heavy drizzle to start, fine clear night.   5 Carp - best 8lb 1oz, 1 rudd, 1 roach.   Very very quiet night on a usually very prolific water. Paul did somewhat better in the next swim with 10 carp to 12lb 6oz. Tried - and failed miserably for one of the lakes few big crucians

River Kennet - Padworth   1900 - 2300   Clear, 19º->12ºC River with good flow and some colour.   Blanked!   A dozen other anglers on the venue when I arrived - so had no real confidence dropping into just about the only free swim. (I bet it was quieter at the weekend!) No sign of any fish - though very few others catching either....

River Lambourn - Newbury   0830 - 1130   Cold, bright & sunny. -2.0º -> 2.0ºC   13 Grayling; 8 over 1lb (!) best 3, 1lb 12oz, 1lb 11oz, 1lb 8oz.   Cracking little session after a slow start. Had planned to go perching on the canal but bottled it when I saw how 'sub-optimal' conditions were. Blanked in first 3 swims I fished - and didn't get more than 2 from any swim. Works look nearly finished - looking good! Biggest grayling from the Lambourn this season.

K&A Canal - Thatcham   0700 - 1115   Very overcast with light mizzle all morning. Mild. WT 53ºF   4 Perch; 1¼lb and 3 tiddlers...   A morning prospectiing for perch with Paul - in seemingly ideal low light conditions. The main plan was to try and suss out some new swims - though Paul couldn't promise NOT to have a cast in one of my banker swims - which actually produced zilch for both of us. So a bit of a scratchy session - not sure we learnt much - e

Warwicks Water - Thatcham   0730 - 1000   Mild, with milky sunshine becoming (too) breezy.   4 Crucians (all small). 1 Perch - circa 10oz, 1 Roach - circa 8oz(!)   Around 18 months ago NAA decided to turn this small fishery into a Crucian water - the place was drained - all the fish (mainly carp) taken out, lilies were planted, fish refuges were installed and lines of tape were strung from bank to bank to keep the cormorants off!   The crucians w

River Kennet - Speen Moors 0800 - 1400 Bright and sunny morning after overnight rain, clouding over with heavy showers after lunch! Cooler than of late 5º - 9ºC River still low. 180mm of rain (and counting) since the start of October hasn't made a blind bit of difference to the river - so far! 4 Chub: Biggest 3lb 6oz - the others between 1¾ - 2¼lb. 6 Dace - a couple of chunky ones, 3 Roach - all small. 1 Perch c½lb, 1 Brownie c¾lb. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1830 - 2330   Clear and still. AT 54ºF --->45ºF, WT 52ºF. River low - another couple of inches down on 3 weeks ago and carrying quite a bit of debris - mainly ranunculus.   2 Barbel (8¼lb , 4lb)   River needs some rain!!! Both fish in the 1st couple of hours (again!) then the signals moved in (never a good sign). Floating debris quite annoying. Lovely clear night - good for firework spotting - also saw a few meteors (Taurids?).

Switch to maggot brought all the silvers and the chub. Switched back to lobs for the last ½hour and had all 4 from a swim I haven't c

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1830 - 2230   Sunny and breezey. Temp 16ºC when I packed up but felt much, much cooler in the stiff breeze - intended to stay longer but was under dressed!   1 Chub 2lb 5oz, 2 dace and a brownie of about a pound.   Another evening of not catching barbel - looks like I'm gonna have to start stalking Viney! took the trotting rod as always and spent the first hour eeking out a few fish from a couple of swims. Then spent 3 hours getting increasingly cold watchi

River Lambourn - Shaw   1300 - 1600   Cold and cloudy, 1ºC. River quite 'full' and clear - suspect the springs have 'sprung' on the downs...   17 Grayling - 4 'pounders', best 3 - 1lb 12oz, 1lb 10oz, 1lb 9oz (!!!), 4 Roach - all small, 3 Brownies - 1 circa ¾lb.   Blimey! Where did they come from? Biggest ever grayling from here - and my first grayling over 1½lb from here since Oct 2001. All bigger fish from same swim - and all caught within first ¼ hour of fishing! Very pleasant afternoo

NAA Stillwater - Widmead   0430 - 1030   Overcast clearing to bright sunshine - quite breezy.   1 Carp 5lb 15oz, 1roach, 1perch, dozen+ rudd.   Fruitless morning after crucians. At least I wasn't plagued by nuisance carp - the only one I caught was deliberate - off the top on bread. Rudd were a bit of a menace - especially as they gave very crucian-like bites at times.....!

Horseshoe Lake, Yateley   1930 - 0630   Clear night - misty morning, Temp 22ºC ar dusk---->12ºC at Dawn   1 bream 4¼lb   Well that was a good nights sleep!!! Had only bite (and fish) within 1½hrs of arriving (on ledgered pellet) and hardly another touch all night. No further bites on pellet. Float fished meat, black pudding, broken up Meteor boilies in the margins. A few half-hearted bites on BP and the boilies but nothing hittable.

River Kennet - Speen Moors   0800 - 1200   Bright and breezy. AT47ºF -> 49ºF. WT 46ºF. River still very high and over the bank in several places - has fined down.   50+ dace (biggest weighed 10oz) ½doz roach and chublets, 1 doz gudgeon.   Had planned to do some perching - but couldn't get to the swims I wanted as the banks were flooded. Surprised still to see so much water in the river after a dryish week. Most dace a good size with few under 4oz.

Summer Pit - CEMEX, Yateley   1830 - 2330   Hot and Sultry. AT still 21ºC at 2330. WT 77ºF in margins (about 2' depth 4' from bank)   1 Tench - 2lb, 1 Rudd (Small)   Another evening struggling for bites - made all the more frustrating by being able to see lots of Crucians cruising in the upper layers of the lake during the hours of daylight. Stubborn refused to even look at any bait that was offered them!
