River Kennet - Marsh Benham

0900 - 1430

Overcast morning, brightening up after lunch (to the detriment of the fishing!)  and quite breezy. AT 5º -> 9ºC. River low and clear (at normal summer levels!).

3 Chub; 4lb 0oz, 3lb 4oz, 2lb 2oz. 1 Bream; 3lb 10oz. 17 Roach; most around 6-8oz with a couple of biggers ones. 1 Bleak.

Whole session on the main river of my syndicate stretch. Had a first cast trout - which got eventually off but only after totally trashing my first swim! Nearly all the fish from a 'new' swim - or at least one that has been opened up by the removal of some branches by last week's little working party - (thanks chaps!). Meant I can now get a cast across the river to run a float under the far bank trees....😉

What a fun day. I thought you were pulling my plummet when you were telling me about the bream the other week! Only one bleak though? Hopefully the recent rain might jazz the river up a bit. I'm due to fish Speen on Friday, but hear we have a storm coming in. Could be a challenge.

Aye and the bream fought harder than any of the chub - was a little disappointed when I eventually subdued it - thought it would be much bigger. Don't think I'd be flirting with Eunice on Friday - certainly not at Speen - with all it's (sickly) trees!

Subdued a bream? words rarely heard together. Hmm, that's a thought about the tree-skittles at Speen. Think I'll stick to Willows, lash my brolly (and myself) to the otter fencing and huddle underneath. Who knows: low air pressure might bring the carp out and certainly add yardage to my casting. The things we have to do for our art, eh?
