River Kennet - Hambridge

0430 - 0830

Warm and sultry - already 23ºC when I packed up - had planned to move to another venue after starting here but the heat decided me otherwise. River low and clear.

2 Chub: 2lb 12oz & 2lb 3oz. 20 Dace; all small. 10 Roach: ditto. 1 Bream - a large-ish skimmer which had me more than a little excited for a minute as thought I was bringing in a rather nice roach! 2 Gudgeon (hooray!) 2 Brownies - a 'pounder' and a parr.

I did a recce here a couple of weeks ago - turned up with my 'lasher' to scythe through the head high nettles to a couple of my favourite swims in preparation for an early season visit. So was more than a little disappointed to note that in the intervening period a tree had come down across one of them. A spot I often do quite well in low water (see entry for last Sep) now alas all but unfishable as the fallen tree has knocked the tree opposite into the river as well.😒 So had to make do with my usual banker swim - both chub turning up on cue after trickling in maggot for 10 minutes while I waited for it to get light enough to see my float followed by the usual mixed bag.

Fabulous to see you opening your gudgeon count so early in the season. Ah, that confirms the location of the fallen trees that you mentioned on the NAA forum. I shall make sure the committee are made aware. I don't suppose you have any pics you could email me?

Will email you the cover pic of this blog - the only one I took - a pretty major job though - maybe one for the EA as I'm sure it will cause a major damming of the river in winter. Takes out the 2nd best swim on the venue - one I used to call The Banker as, upto a decade ago, as I could pretty much guarantee a barbel from it (as I did last season!) (And if you've got the ear of the committee the fallen tree below the point at Brimpton is still there - occupying my favourite chub hole!!)

Hi CP. As per my email to you, I've alerted the committee. To repeat what I said for the benefit of any other Anglersnet readers who may have a vested interest, I quote myself as follows:

I've spoken (today) to Mr Chairman about the trees this morning and have now sent on your comments and pics. I will do what I can to get things done. I know an exercise starts this month to repair/replace over 50 swims in Knotts, Collins & Dobsons  over the course of a few weeks which is taking a lot in both resource and cash, so I can't say how quickly any action would be taken. However I do promise to keep the pressure on at committee meetings and keep you in the know.
