With the river close season rapidly approaching, I managed three sessions at the syndicate.

Tuesday evening - Took the cheesepaste to a number of swims. Caught a 1lb 12 chub early on followed by two angry brownies in the 2lb bracket. As it darkened the temperature dropped faster than a 4-oz Arsley bomb as a kingfisher flew low and fast past my rod tip, a barn owl landed in the trees opposite and an orangey full moon rose behind me. It was all breathtaking, but I only managed one more brownie before the cold had me headed back to the car at 7.

Friday day - The two inches of snow that fell overnight on Tuesday night and hung around for a day may have gone, but there was still a freezing north breeze. It was gloves on, so I started on the leger again and soon had a 2lb 14 chub. Local fishing legend CP turned up and had a fab day - see his blog entry here:  10 March - Chris Plumb's Blog - Fishing Forums from Anglers' Net (anglersnet.co.uk) - I had a day more in keeping with my lesser ability, but was pretty pleased with another 2 chub (3lb and 1lb 2) a couple more brownies, a 3lb 2 rainbow, and from a stint of trotting when it warmed up a little, around 20 roach to 8oz before a pike moved in and I felt it not fair to continue fishing for them.

Saturday morning - A bonus session. A frosty start and 9 brownies between 3 and 4lbs. Strange - you never see any trout smaller than this here - did they just have a bumper year? A go at trotting brought another 20 or so roach, a couple of perch and a clonking dace, but retackling having lost a float in a tree when it recoiled from a snag, I somehow managed to over tension my rod and snap the last 2 feet off it. So had to spend the last couple of hours back on the leger, with limited ability to cast or detect bites. Frustrating, but when the last fish went airborne and I presumed it was another bloomin' brownie, the fish gods smiled nodded and in came a 2lb 5 chub. Slightly below par, but with over 30lbs of fish in a cold session, I can't be too disappointed.

My cheap 10ft leger rod thank goodness. Felt a bit aggrieved I must admit -  I didn't think I'd been that clumsy. Think I must have weakened it landing all those brownies!
