Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington

0630 - 0930

Brightening up after overnight rain. AT 6º - 10ºC.

2 Doz perch. Nothing noteworthy - though they weren't tiddlers - most around 6-8oz with a couple twice that.

I had great plans for this week - and they didn't involve prospecting for perch on my club's most westerly venue. The coarse season on the Frome opens tomorrow and I had intended to travel down to Dorset to make the most of the opening day. Alas heavy rain over the past week or so has put the river in the fields and looking at the forecast for the next week it's likely to stay that way for a while. So to a venue I last fished 4 years ago and as ever the quest was to try and find some of the big perch the venue throws up from time to time. Fished 4 swims and had perch from all of them - but nothing to trouble the scales. Increasing light levels brought the signals out in force prompting a pack up before I ran out of lobs!

Aw, shame. I do believe there's good fish in there. Shame about the Frome, but if any of it reaches the aquifiers then it's probably best that we have it.

Kennet springs have already burst - 3 months early - and the result no doubt of a very wet September & October. The river gauge at Winterborne Monkton started recording about 2-3 weeks ago....
