River Kennet - Newbury (Whitehouse)

0900 - 1300

Bright and breezy with heavy showers. AT 8ºC. River very pacey with a tinge of colour.

1 Chub: 5lb 14oz. 9 Roach - all a 'nice' size - the one I deemed worthy of the scales went 14oz - with all the others around half that! 2 Dace - small.

A quick return to my pre-Christmas venue. When I walked back to my car last week I spied a slack which simply screamed 'here be chub' and I wasn't wrong! First trot through the float buried at the end of the run and I was into a very stubborn battle. A lumbering fight more befitting of a big bream - but very pleased with a season's best chub. Couldn't winkle out another  so went exploring and had decent-ish roach from the two other swims I dropped into....

Nearly a 6.

Thanks - can't quite think why I've neglected this bit of river for so long - though it's not the quietest of stretches with a retail park on one bank and industrial estate on the other - had a bit of an audience landing the chub - with someone asking if it was a carp!!!😏

That's why i didn't fish the Bulls Lock stretch. It's lovely and deep there but I didn't fancy having my sandwiches sniffed by dogs or druggies. It has the NAA's biggest pike there, but there's no way I was going to unhook any in front of small children and mad cyclists. I'm a true misanthrope. Happy fishing for '24.

Being close to Tesco's and B&Q that stretch gets a whole new level of footfall. I need to perfect my 'I'm not interested in talking ' grunt in response to the endless 'caught anything?' questions.🤔

I fished there this morning for a couple of hours and was pleased to land a near 6lb chub. Not so pleased to be told by a passing dog walking lady-‘ why are you putting it back, you should eat it…….’
