It was a nice walk I suppose
Kennet & Avon Canal (felt like most of it), Saturday 29th October 2011
Well that was a bit of a disappointment, having convinced myself of the merits of dropshotting I felt pretty certain that the method fished with lobs would be a killer for perch on the canal. The forecast was perfect and, crucially, I’d managed to get up early enough to be at my parking spot before first light, well before as it happened.
I sat in the car wondering what to do, it was too dark to fish but I didn’t fancy wasting time doing nothing. I decided to reverse the plan, with headtorch illuminating the towpath I’d walk as far as I could before I could see well enough to fish, then I’d fish my way back to the car. What a yomp it was too and bloody creepy to boot.
That part of the plan worked well, the rest sort of fell apart really. Ok it wasn’t that bad, the theory behind the method proved sound, I could cast to the far bank and keep the bait in one place. I could also give the lob a wiggle without moving the lead. The vital missing element was something to eat the lob…..not a perch in sight. I did get a couple of plucks but these were rare occurrences. Desperate measures were called for, everybody knows that if you want to catch small perch you go to a lock cut and I had three to choose from. Obviously I chose the nearest and obviously I chose the one which had been vacated by every small perch in the land….not a sniff. A friendly chub did take pity on me however. Don’t get too excited, the reel is tiny and the chub only weighed a pound and a half if that (I could’ve really bigged that one up).
With the safety net of the lock cut well and truly holed I started the trek back to the car fishing as I went. Half way back I swapped to float fished lobs but still no perch and by the time I returned to the car I’d resigned myself to the fact that some strange unknown influence had affected the perch’s appetite. I consoled myself with the thought that if my lobs weren’t good enough then most other people would have struggled too.
Then I read Chris Plumb’s blog.
