The Flying Tench

3-4.45pm

Grey, cloudy day, reasonably mild, so I thought it would be a good fishing day, and decided to try for perch. Due to back problems I try to avoid walking too far, and it was a choice between the free stretch where, when I last looked, the EA hadn't destroyed all the perch swims, and a canal swim which I am fairly sure is where Rusty bagged up in early September. I chose the latter.

I started fishing maggot because it would be interesting to see what small stuff was around, and attracting them should in turn attract Mrs Stripey. After about 20 minutes I realised 3 things were wrong. There was not a sign of any small fish; the electricity board blokes were making an incredible din with their chain saws and, particularly the machine that turns the logs into chippings, and I feared that even when dusk came the perch might not be too impressed; and on reflection I was not sure how reliable a perch swim it was. In early Sept it was good for the perch to avoid the boats, but there weren't any boats today anyway.

So I went a few hundred yards downstream to where I thought there was guaranteed dace fishing but, strangely, I couldn't get a touch - on maggot. That's fishing, I guess!

I think I was lucky on that day John, I’ve fished it twice since then with no luck. My theory is that the trees had only just been cut down when I first fished the swim so perhaps the perch were lurking there because that’s what they were used to doing, once they realised the cover was gone they cleared off somewhere else.

I haven’t been back in ideal conditions though so my theory might be barracks.

Thanks for that info, Rusty. With so many of the obvious perch bushes cut down it's hard to think where they've gone to. I suppose one possibility is the cut between the Arrowhead and C canal. I heard of someone catching a lot of big perch there a few years ago. I caught a couple on a lure a couple of years ago, but on a couple of occasions since caught nowt - but that was before the EA did their recent stuff.
