  1. Thanks for the replies. Went fishing yesterday having soaked some overnight. Didn't catch anything on them though.

Soaking "Overnight" Will NOT do..... :wallbash:

Peanuts need a MINIMUM of 24 hours soaking, then bring to boil and simmer for 20-30 minutes.

They can be very harmful to the fish if not prepared properly.

This is why they are banned in the majority of waters....

  2. Okuma Epix Pro. I have the 40 size, but you might find the 50 size more appropriate.

Only difference between the 40's and 50's is the size of the spool, there is no descernable weight difference either. Both are about the same weight/size of a Shimano GTE 6010.

  3. Ferret.........any line will do just rub a candle on it to make it float :)

Also Vaseline, I always have some in my tackle box (thats how the rumour started... )

And lip balm (unscented) as it comes in a nice handy container.

Although you will have to re-apply it every few casts.

Or you could buy the fox line stuff at thrice the price..!!!

  4. That must have been great fun on light tackle Blake and well done to your dad.

Zaphod - it is indeed one way to hold a fish for a photo. UK technique is not universal.

Fish welfare aside, this way does not exactly show the fish in all its glory..!!

  5. Only that I found out afterwards what the club record was and think this may have gone close.

Well, you will have to catch it again, this time with some bigger scales as you would not be able to claim the record without verification of the weight.

Having said that, it would be difficult to estimate from a photo especially as it is at an angle etc.

A great capture, get out there and do it again lad :thumbs:

What you should have done, is cut the fish in half, weigh the two halves and add together, bit of superglue...job done :D:D

  6. A shameless bringing back to the top of this but I am looking for some more ideas as to how heavy the fish was.

Is it really that important ??

It looks a magnificent fish, dont drag it down to numbers..!!!

  7. It would be a good point, but not at the water in question. As I said in an earlier post, it's a lake with a yachting club, a canoe club, and no shooting. The lake side is used by the general public out for a stroll or walk the dog. There is a BMX track to one side, and a swing park at the other. So shooting is out of the question in this case.

I was refering to the Lead problem in general and not regarding a specific lake. But point taken

  8. Someone mentioned in passing and it clicked with me. I know where the swan got its lead! All these Duck hunters blasting away with shotguns! Where does the lead shot go that missed the target?

My bet it ends up in the bottom of the water!! So who's to blame? Anglers or shootists. If they can blame anglers when lead has been banned for nearly 20 years, why haven't they looked at shotgun pellets?

A blerluudy good point, well made

  9. How about sugar puffs or marshmallows as a hook bait obviously a bit difficult to feed at range but ive used them in conjunction with the pole for surface fishing

Trouble with that is, I usually end up scoffing them. The fish dont get a look in :)

  10. zaphod and nomadpaul thanx for the advice i will try chum mixers next time i go

they fish were feeding off the top we, we chucked some dog biscuits in and they were taking them very panickly trying them many times before they actually took them

    No problem :D

As the other guys said, try feeding them to start with and let them get confident before trying for them.

Good luck, let us know how you get on

  11. I think the amount of information available to us now is a great asset, including great forums like this one. If in doubt there is always help available.

Agree, but I am sometimes getting "infromation overload" which prevents me from my true passion,

"standing up" My name is Zaphod (not really) and I am a TACKLE TART. :2:

There ! I said it, Feel better now

  12. is that white or brown bread.????????????

would'nt want to use the wrong type.!!! :wallbash::blink:

Wholemeal for commons, White (mothers pride) for Mirrors and Hovis for leathers...

And, obviously Pain for French Carp,,

Never ever ever EVER try toast, I tried it once, but the result is just too painful for me to relate... :yucky:

  13. Hi all I'm trying to make a very hard boilies type bait to avoid crayfish on a water I'm planning to fish. However I can't decide what flavours etc to include. I'm hoping to use natural ingredients so can you possible give me any ideas also to your favourite tench baits and groundbaits and additives etc..

    Rich

Air drying boilies will harden them up, try something like "tutti frutie", dunno why but Mr & Mrs Tinca seem to like the fruity baits at a lot of the waters in my area. Maybe something radical like breadflake may be worth a try, as I cant imaging the crayfish really going for it.

Good luck, berluddy crayfish are a PITA mate and no error.

  14. Zenith,

    There is an article on this site re; surface fishing;

    http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/Carp-Fishing-A...nce_Saloon.html

You say that they are "topping" . that does not necessarily mean that they are feeeding of the top.

Get some Pedigree chum mixers (pet food section of supermarket), then rinse them under a top in a collander for a min' or two, then put them in a sealable bag with plenty of air in them and leave over night. This will let them absorb the water and expand circa 100% and soften.

Then when you are down there try feeding a bit in and see if they will take off the top.

If they are feeding on the top, then give it a go.

If you can get them off the top it is the best way ever, believe me.

P.S. ADMINS, perhaps this should be moved to the Carp forum, as there will be more response !!
