  1. I think we take it as axiomatic that pain comes in lots of different guises: physical, emotional, instinctive. Of course fish are distressed otherwise they would just happily be reeled in and not try to shake the hook or dash for weed and snags to escape..I'm not sure having a small brain equates to a lack of these responses. However, like most on here I won't pretend that no harm, potential or otherwise, does not come to the fish we catch. By the way, the pain is on your toe, the neurological messages go from the toe to the brain.

    Sportsman,

Silly poll (something for maybe - say - - - - Barry and Andrew to engage in). First if you will edit post #1 and tell me what pain is?

If I stub my toe - - - is the pain in my toe or in my brain? (remember, fish have very small brains pretty much limited to instinctive behavour - dont trap yourself)

  2. Given that I have just moved very close to this area, I was wondering if anyone has fished this bit of canal. I have seen a few people near Little Venice and it seemed a nice spot to take some light tackle and wile away a few hours. Any advice would be very welcome...

    Cheers,

    Fraser.

  3. ...coming on here and reading about experiences, techniques and learning from the replies to posts asking advice on tactics, kit, bait etc. I have never been a big poster but I like the forum. I logged in this morning after a nice few days on the river to find the place dominated by rancour and arguments. We all have our own views about fishing, how, when, what with, fish care etc. But I've never seen this amount of time given over to slanging matches on here. It's a shame...

  4. Can anyone recommend a good brolly. I'm looking for something light but well made and durable. I don't need a shelter type thing, just something that will keep me dry in tight swims.

    Cheers, F.

  5. Great advice already given, but for what it's worth...If the fish are not obviously on the surface I would start about six inches under and then work down a foot at a time. If you start this way you can simply shorten the rig rather than tie a new one. I tend to avoid pop ups (cut down or otherwise) and get best results from using foam. The most successful colours for me are orange and black! As for spodding, the only way to do it is as has been suggested; a sloppy, milky mix. However, unless you are going for a long session (at least two days) I would avoid this tactic, but that's just me!

Not sure how you would use a PVA bag with a Zig, anything that doesn't float will attract fish only below and anything that does move about will quickly disappear - unless I'm missing something!

    Good luck...

  6. Me!

Bit of an annual tradition with me, since a boy,( never have really grown up). I was wonderimng who else plans on a session on Boxing day. I am planning a day on the Bure at Woodbastwick, Norfolk. Fished great in the summer, before the boats come out. Now the boats are not relevant, I am keen to see how it fishes. As the water has a 2 rod, (in water), limit, My aproach will be to have 2 small feeders out & a deadbait rod set up to change to. Bait will be ;- mixed maggs, worms, bread & meat. With 2 bags of groundbait. not that I expect to use it all. Weather forecast is 10'C, dry with a wind from behind me, so should be just right & I hope the rise in tempreture brings them on feeding again.

I also have this crazy idea to have a hook both above & below the feeder to start. This I hope, with different baits on, will half the time & casts needed to find the right one. Any comments please !!!

    2012 Plans

Well plans or dreams, I can't tell.

    1) Well it is my 50th in May, so first is a 9 day, birthday trip to Ireland.

    2) Visit as many waters as possible. Possible as a 2 or 3 part 'Grand Tour'.

    3) Replace ALL my tackle, bit by bit.

    4) To actually make it to 'Tackle Fest' at Peterborough. At last..

    5) Learn new tactics

So that makes 2 questions to keep you thinking:- Boxing day & 2012 plans, I await your comments & replies.

  7. bye the way he has 2 intercepters for carp, pike and barbel, thats why i was after him getting a okuma, and with the warrenty, you dont get shimano, diawa giving that on there reels, even on 100quid reels

True but they don't have to, because in general they last! Notwithstanding that, I think the sentiment is accurate: you don't have to spend a fortune to get reasonable quality gear. I'm sure we can all attest to cheap disasters and expensive mistakes. I just think some you win some you lose. ;)

  8. Thanks guys, I have been looking at either the J W Young Avon Quiver or the Drennan Avon Quiver. I think I'm going to go for the Drennans. I don't want to use bite alarms I was thinking of having one on the waggler and one on the feeder using a mixture of maggot, corn, paste over a bed of hemp. I'll let you know how I get on. Purchasing the rods tomorrow and going for a two day session. many thanks!

    Fraser.

  9. Hi guys, my carp syndicate has a good head of tench and I was thinking of spending a few sessions targeting them. What I need is two good tench rods that I can use a medium feeder with or maybe a float on the odd occasion. I have seen a few specialist rods, but wondered what others used for this type of fishing and maybe some advice on the best tactics baits etc...Cheers. Fraser.

  10. No seriousness in this thread, but out of all the fish in the world, regardless of saltwater or freshwater, and climate etc...

Which fish would you most like to introduce to you local lake/river?

Bonefish, without doubt the best pound for pound fighting fish.

  11. I shall be spending a few hours trotting for grayling, possibly trying out my split cane rod.

So who else is grabbing the thermals and getting out there?

Popping out for at least 4 hours on the Wensum, after some good winter chub...lots of snow here in Norfolk so my hands and feet may freeze!

  12. Restrict them from what, harming fish? Pike are one of our most delicate species and need to be fished for and handled sensitively. That just sounds like an excuse to write a Daily Mail like rant to me!

  13. How many people actually need big pit reels. I know they are the desired kit for many carp anglers but I regularly see large big pits on waters where the longest cast would not exceed 50 yards! Where needed, they are invaluable and the modern varieties will tighten the drag completely with a quarter turn, so no worries about a bait runner system. I have a set of big pits but they only really come into their own on trips abroad tbh....!

  14. I don't know if anyone else has tried these feeders but i bought a couple yesterday,it's the top 2 on the following page http://www.korum.co.uk/feeders.php. The plastic is very brittle and splits very easily, they only lasted a couple of casts, not very good for the price IMO.

Like some other posters, I find Korum overrated and expensive. I have used their block end and method feeders and have only found the latter useful. Drennan block end feeders never let me down...It does make you wonder how these things get on the shelves?

  15. hiya. i havent been on for ages so im back now! right, i got a problem! does anybody know of a good hooklength material to use when surface fishing? i hane tried daiwa supersensor, e.s.p ghost monofil, and about 3 other types so can anybody help me out? many thanx b's

Ultima's new line for Zig Rigs looks a good bet...

  16. But I suspect most carpers fish with a bobbin

Not all. In fact when carp fishing I tend to slack line most of the time - even with a heli rig. Unless it is very very windy. I find that, tight lines under a bobbin/bit indicator tends to lift the line and spook the fish!

  17. A friend of mine bought one recently and it was a cracking length of rod. Beautifully crafted and handled a good sized carp (6 pound, despite the fact that roach was the target species) with ease. If I had the money I would get one. My match rods are all around the £50-75 mark and the difference in construction and finish was marked. Hope that is some help.

  18. i have not fished at Waltons walk but often fish around Dobbs weir and have fished on fishers green before. To be honest i find the Lee a bit on the difficult side but if you are prepared to work at it the rewards are there. Big Barbel Big chub big pike big perch. if fact there does not seen to be any thing small apart from minnows and gudgeon. there are lots of signal crayfish on the Lee so it makes fishing with a static bait very hard in the summer. There are some Zander on the Lee so i am informed. All in All its the best river in our region for the Specimen angler.

Thanks for that Peter. I'll give it a go anyway as the season ticket is only £40; about the same as four trips to a lake covered in bivvies! Is Dobbs Weir still a day ticket?

  19. Hi Fraser.

At first I thought you meant the old Lea around Waltham Abbey and Fishers Green but now I see that Waltons Walk is much higher upstream than where I am familiar.

As a matter of interest I'm a member of RMC Fishers Green on the Lea, thats a fantastic, very scenic venue with a very good catch history.

If you would be interested in this venues then I would be glad to let you know my thoughts.

Thanks Hermes that stretch interests me too. Your thoughts would definitely be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Fraser.
