  1. This makes a LOT of sense about the drivers round here!! Although quite a lot of people who come to this country can drive on their countries licence for 3 years before they have to take a UK test,.. I would like to know the percentage of people who actually bother to take the UK one. I'm guessing it's not many...

  2. I have been a newport member for about 18 years the river holds good bream perch chub roach barbel the pits fish well for most species, also cats caught in the neck couple of years back.

Milton Keynes waters are litle to public for me, to many people wandering around day and night.

Ahh, another local!! My brother-in-law lives in the Toll house so we fish at the bottom of the garden where it joins into one - I have fished the pits with him once before but we both blanked. I hear there are some real monster pike in there so I might take the spinning rod down for a go over the next few months. What do the other lakes fish like? I was a bit disappointed when I went, I had only just bought my years membership and only one lake was fishable! Hopefully the blanket weed will clear and I can have a fish on some of the others - any other places in the NPFA you can recommend I try?

  3. very nicely done, big perch are a ton of fun, havnt broke the 3lb barrier yet. they are especialy fun on a float rod/setup with lob worms more enjoyable as you can get a good play from them, even the little ones fight like bruce lee. once had a screamer and was thinking it was gonna be a decent 2lb'er, turned out to be a few ounce just shy of 1lb. think perch are a little understated, they are magnificint fish and demand a lot of respect

Thanks - they are great fighting fish, makes you wonder what the 100lb beasts in lake nasser? must fight like!! I was on 15lb mono on a Daiwa spinning rod (bought the previous day) so it was a good fight but I knew it was coming to daddy  I normally use a little match rod with 4lb line on it, now that would have made things a bit more interesting!!

  4. Thanks for the links Andy much appreciated.

I agree on the MKAA club seems like a much better idea. I've also been looking at the Great Linford lakes membership whish is very reasonable however I think they have adopted a one out one in policy.

    Thanks again

    No worries :)

I haven't fished Linford yet but apparently there are some great fish in there - it was on a go-fishing/carp club type fishing programme on Sky not long ago. If you have a look in the Marle Inn (tackle shop on-site) there are pictures of some of the big ones in there, don't quote me on the weight but there is a catfish in there about 60lb!! I know you can get a day ticket for 2 rods for about £10 which i'll probably do once the weather picks up a bit..

  5. Hi mate,

Don't work at Aston do you!!? Is Tingrith the Toddington one? If so i'm not sure which one I fished name wise, but it was the bottom lake - I didn't realise at the time but we fished off the big peg, that we later found out is a disabled peg (no signs?)

If you can fish Newport I would recommend you go out another few miles and join the Milton Keynes Angling Association which is £30 per year. I am a member of both the MK and Newport waters, I'm not saying the Newport one isn't worth it (especially with fish like that) but if I had to choose I would recommend you went for a MKAA book as there are soo many more places to fish.

The Newport one is a few stretches of river and a complex with about 5 lakes on it.

The MK one is huge in comparison with 11 lakes, 9 stretches of river, MILES of canal and a couple of bonus waters in Oxford and Felmersham. Because of it's size of MK it seems to be more organised as well, with regular matches and baliffs a plenty.

For both of them you can pick up your membership from the Tackle shops in MK, I would recommend go-fishing in Wolverton (not far from Newport) as it seems to have all the latest stuff out and it's probably got biggest range of fishing stuff. There is a few others that do the membership to, Willards in Bradville and there is also one in Fenny Stratford.

Here is a link to both of them for you to have a look at..

  6. At present most of my fishing is the non edible course variety (albeit I have eaten carp, eel, catfish etc, the latter i quite like)

Based on the recent news regarding the potential lifespan commercial fishing, how do people feel about fishing for the pot?

Just out of interest what was carp like, I read somewhere that in Japan it's quite common (no pun intended!) for them to be eaten. Then again, they do eat some weird stuff  What would you liken it to?

  7. I used a fox 30lb wire trace last weekend and caught a few perch, most people I have spoken to also use wire when fishing for perch with pike around. I don't think it makes a difference to the perch, just covers you if something bigger wants a go..

  8. Thanks for the comments guys, it was a small jelly worm - it came from a DIY bass fishing lure kit, all the fish have a reflective piece of something (like the line in a tenner) going through them which gives them a real shine. The one in question was white with a yellow reflective bit...

  9. That's a smashing fish mate. :)

    Paul.

Thanks mate :D I've only been fishing properly for a few months now, I never realised I would get so into it - all I seem to do is eat, sleep and talk fish at the moment!!

  10. Hi Dr Claw, congratulations! That's a biggie and by the look of the photo has plenty of weight to gain yet. That'll be a 4lber soon! I hope you get many more.

Thanks, I was so worried the pictures wouldn't do it justice but they have come out really well, we must have taken about 10 - they all looked exactly the same!

When he does put on a few extra oz's,.... I'll be waiting :D

  11. Hi,

I've already posted this on the back of another thread I saw about perch but after a quick search I think its worthy of it's own thread!

Last Saturday I went spinning for the first time, at the river ouse in Newport Pagnell hoping for my first pike. Got to the bank at 6am and it was a shade below freezing (-1 according to the car) Fished for about 3 hours using big 6' lures with rattles and didn't have a single bite. Decided to change to some jelly lures my mum had bought be back from holiday, started with a tiny 2in one with a wacky? hook through it. Within 10 minutes I was having bites from perch and after a couple of small ones I got a really good run, at first I wasn't sure what it was as it really took the line so fast, I couldn't believe my eyes when I slipped it into the net and realised it was a perch - I had no idea they got that big! After some furious shouting I was joined by my brother in law and 2 mates I also fishing with, all standing round throwing in guess-timates of its weight. I'll admit at this point, excitement took over and there was some talk of a record as it really did look like a massive fish!! Anyway after weighing the fish, weighing the net, then weighing them both, then the net again and then the fish in the net again(as you do!) the digital scales confirmed a weight of 3lb 11oz - a fish to be proud of  To top the whole day off I looked in my Newport Pagnell fishing association book and I've broken the previous record of 3lb 9oz - I have been trying to get hold of the baliff to see whats what but he seems to have gone AWOL..

Anyway enjoy... excuse the face, I was trying to hold it to my chest and lift the fin up with my thumb at the same time !!

  12. First post, so I thought i'd add to this - I was out with my brother in law and a couple of mates on Saturday at the river ouse in Newport Pagnell. I was fishing a 6' lure in the hope of a pike but after 3 hours and no bites I decieded to change from the rattling lures to these little (2inch) jelly lures on a single hook still on 30lb wire trace. Within 10 mins I was getting perch in exactly the same spot I was casting before. After a couple of little one I pulled a PB beauty! Weighed it with the digitals and it was 3lb 11oz (new local record - pending the baliff ringing me back!) - this makes me think that although the fish was capable of taking the big lure it preferred the smaller one? One things for sure, if there are more perch like that in there i'm definately going back!!
