  1. As I said earlier I own a staff agency that brings in EE'S to work in the UK, I have been doing so for over 2 years.

So let me ask a question the new member states have been part of the EU for 2 years and there have been many poles , Latvians (not formally Poland as some one said earlier), Lithuanians, Estonians, Checks and Slovaks working in the UK.

Were are these waters that have been destroyed in the last two years?

Personally I have not seen any stretch of river ,lakes , ponds, commercial water or any kind of water were the fishing has declined due to Eastern Europeans taking fish out. I live very close to the vale of Evesham were there are thousands of Migrant workers working on Farms.

The River Avon runs through this landscape and I can tell you it’s never been healthier.

Is there some proof out there that our fishing is being decimated by Eastern Europeans?

I would really like to see some hard facts.

Please a lot of people seem to talk about devastated waters, were are they!!!?

For the record the only fish I have seen removed in the last 2 years have been a pike from the river Arrow at wixford by an old man (English from Birmingham) who said when questioned that he was going to have it fried with bacon for his breakfast the next day. And a Local fish and game merchant who I saw taking Zander from the Avon at Stratford, no doubt to finish up on his fish display.

I have lost count of the number of times English Anglers that have watched me catch a Zander and ask me if I am going to knock it on the head as they are good eating !

I can only say what I see!!!

  2. OK, So I own a staff agency, many of my staff are from eastern Europe, Most work for the minimum wage, some have had promotions and earn better money. all are excellent staff and generally nice people.

all pay rent in the UK , all buy food and Clothes, some send some money home (as do most Brits that work overseas) and some don't, so who ever was moaning about not spending the money in the UK needs to be a bit more educated on the subject before making incorrect statements.

How Many Brits live in Spain,, France etc.. I bet its a smiler number to the eastern Europeans in the UK.

With regards to taking fish, I think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion, I have over 80 EE Staff, non of them fish, I know because I have offered to take anyone who wants to go fishing a trip with me to show them the ropes.

I lived in Latvia for 7 years and fished with many Latvians, most keep fish for the pot, Only small pike were kept as they were ideal for eating, larger fish were put back, Rudd, Roach and bream were returned most of the time ( some were kept for the cat), Tench and Carp were kept. Perch were the favorite target as these were consider the best eating.

I can say that the fishing was great and did not seem to be effected by the taking of fish.

Most EE Try to fit into the UK way of life, if they are taking fish its only because this is what they are used to at home, a little eduction is all that is needed. I think you will find that most if not all will respond well to a little encouragement and friendly help.

Please I am sick of this country's attitude to new EU members you should hear some of the crap that gets said to me.

  3. Am I right in assuming (from your location) that this was in some part of the Severn system?

Yes it was in the seven system.

I wonder if the EA publish this info somewere I have looked on thier websit but can't find any info.

  4. I was talking with the owner of a tackle shop last week who told that an EA Baliff had told him that the elver run this year was the bigest ever recorded.

There is some though apparently that eel numbers these go in cycles. There a lot of stories about declining eel populations but the EA Guy said he thinks in 3-4 years the rivers will be full of bootlace eels again.

    Lets hope it true

  5. It would be nice to hear both sides of the story and see one of these barrels. I can imagine that things have been said that have made the resolution of this dispute very difficult.

Bring in an independent adjudicator such as a member of the Salmon fishing association of Island or the local Council, make a selection of experts available and resolve the issue.

Sounds to me that this event has been going on for a long time, why is the issue raised only now??

Why can’t pike sacks be used?

Can you get a barrel on a boat?

Do they need to be retained at all surly there could be another method of recording the weight and then releasing them.

Have PAC gone in like a steam train and put the backs up of everyone?

Won’t the antis love this one!!

Surly this can be sorted by level heads, who can help??

  6. Living in Sweden for a couple of years I used to get out fishing a lot, and the fishing was great, I was sat in a boat on a lake in Kinvsta close to a reed bed when I heard a lot of noise, shortly a Moose pushed through the reeds, it was shoulder deep in the water, when it saw me it panicked and tried to flee, this took a while as it was so deep in the water, the commotion nearly capsized the boat.

  7. [Hi Phil You must have just missed me, I fished on the Avon with my son Yesterday, we left around 19:00 (he had homework to do) We fished on the concrete at the farthest point close to the lock, the water came up 1/2 a foot whilst we were there. (Just got to the top of the concrete)

We were after Zander, I had one 6lbs and my son had one 12lb 12oz

We also fished with a stick float for live bait and a bit of fun; we had some nice roach and bream.

We had all weather, heavy rain, sun, wind flat calm and a rainbow. (This was my son’s lucky sign)

I have added some photos; the bream was about 2lb,

My son was scared to hold the Zander so unfortunately the picture does not do it Justice, The picture of my Zander was videoed in error by my son so I can't post it.

Anyway a great day was had.

Glad you had some good fishing; the fish seem to be packed in tight in this area at the moment.

Hope to see you on the bank some time.

    Cheers Richard

  8. Hi All,

Well very hard to tell 100%, but i would say that it is a Roach.

It would be interesting to know the weight and what water or type of water it was caught from.

    Great fish.

I am sure its all roach, it is well coloured has the right shaped fins and the mouth looks to be correct. I would say about 3.5lb may be a bit more, Fantastic fish.

  9. Great info bluerinse!

I'm told night fishing is ok on the town water but not on the seven meadows section, is that about right?

Some clonking great carp in the town section too!!! I've often been tempted to fish for em at night over the bridge in the shallow area near the bird sanctuary by the rowing club! There are some steps at the end of the bridge by the snactuary so it would be easy enough to land them. Never seen any no fishing signs but not sure if fishing there would be frowned upon or not?

Night fishing is allowed on the town stection, I know you can't fish on the rowing club bank as I have been thrown off there,(second arch on the bridge there is a great chub swim) the other side Im not sure, I have neaver seen anyone fish there. there are no no fishing signs as you say so I can't see why not. The only thing you would have to put up with at night is the drunk youths!! not sure I would fancy that.

There are big Carp up by the wiers my biggest is 23lb and there are for sure bigger fish in there.

Also its full of Pike and Zander, free running ledger link with a small bleak is the killer for Zander, I have had over 30 fish in a sesstion, fished in any slack water on either wier pool. Zander I have caught range in size from 1lb - 8lb, There are many bigger fish I just have not conected with any yet.

    cheers BR

  10. The Manor Farm stretch is good with a variety of swims from slow and deep to fast and shallow with a weir thrown in for good measure. Fished it a few years ago but, alas, no barbel. The tackle shop in Alcester has a short stretch with about a dozen pegs, fished that twice and caught my first barbel there, 3 at around 2lbs but a result nonetheless. You need to get a ticket in advance, the shop is at the end of the main street ner the church.

Ginger Alan at Alcester Takle told me he has given up the stretch, it is now a syndicate water :schmoll:

  11. I never mentioned a big one! But thanks for the advice.

The Town stretch is pay on the bank and is Stratford Town council water, this runs up to the road bridge, the other side of the bridge is Stratford Angling Club (seven meadows) You can pay on the bank here or get a Day ticket from the tackle shop on the Biddford rd. (opposite the shell garage, I forgot the name)

On the town water Lucy's mill has a good head of Barbel, they tend to sit in the slacker water, Most anglers fish for them in the faster water which is a mistake. There is a good swim past the second weir, opposite a willow, the swim is full of streamer weed and the barbel sit in there, one thing I will say is if the main sluice gate is open past the second weir then this area is un-fishable and you should move up stream before the sluice gate.

Also in the Stratford Angling Club water, fish in the calmer water about 3 swims after the weir, yes you can see the barbel on the gravel but it’s easier to catch them from the slower deeper swims below. The 14lb that came out last season was from this area.

    Hope this helps.

Also useful link you could try Harvington, which is a renowned barbel area and is day ticket

  12. Thanks, Blue R. I shall certainly get some, but I'm a bit puzzled by one thing. If they're a bit smaller than a pea, that's about the same size as a decent piece of sweetorn - OK, it will slightly increase the average size of roach and dace caught, compared with maggot, but it doesn't really single out the bigguns. A 3oz roach will happily take a piece of sweetcorn. What is your general experience re this with the Jelletts? It may be I have read too much into this one exceptional trip.

Not sure really, the only thing I can imagine is that the smaller Roach are chasing the maggots (free offerings) whilst the larger fish are waiting below for the pellet to fall quicker to deeper water, it might mean the small fish don’t have time to grab the bait on the way down, this would also explain why I caught bream on the pellets as the bait got deeper before the smaller fish above grabbed it. the pellets are even a little bit smaller than sweet corn. It could be the fishy smell of the pellet appeals more to larger roach, I really don't know, all I know is it works and it has worked for me on several occasions.

Unfortunately I didn’t get back out last night, I have an eye on the weather at the Moment, If the rain holds off here I might try and get out this evening.

    Cheers Blue R

  13. The story of that 48lb carp from Harvington has been doing the rounds for a few years now! It may be true but many believe its just a fishy tale to draw punters to the guys fishery.

Bottom line is nobody really knows what lurks in our rivers.........probably why they are so popular.

Hi Phil, I have fished Harvington a couple of times, I pike fished it last winter and had some great sport 7 pike, biggest 12lb

I also had a Barbel session last summer with a nice fish of 9lb and a few chub. It’s a great spot, it was the owner who told me about the carp, I thought it was a bit suspect at the time, that’s why I asked the question. I am planning a carp and tench session there soon and have had a look round during the close season, I recon I have found some good swims in the meadows area at Harvington that scream Carp, tench and bream.

I have been planning my attack; I reckon lunchen meat fished on a bolt rig in the margins with plenty of free offerings.

I will let you know how I get on.

  14. The ony thing I wouls say is you have to catch whats in frount of you, you might get a peg full of carp or you might get a peg full of silver fish, I would have two rods set up for each type of fish and find out what is most productive.

  15. Blimey, £1000 for a rod!

I'm assuming these are the Rolls-Royce of carp rods; however there must be other companies that make traditional split cane rods at prices your average working man can afford....I must investigate further!

Why not buy an old split cane rod, normally there are plenty on e-bay at good prices. I have found some in excerlent condition
