  1. Well - here's a claim for you all!! I've got LOADS of Roach and especially Perch on my Canal the other day - and guess what? IT was a 15!!! - Thats right a 15!! oz of course! thats actually my biggest fish - was prob even less than that to be honest as I never weighed it - and am so much of a begginer that I havn't got even the remotest scooby doo of what 1lb of fish looks like! - but only my second time out, so I was over the moon!
  2. I would continue this conversation - but I'm off to fish a small river on westbury best stop off to get some worms and red maggott sharpish
  3. 5lbs!! I thought the record was 5lb something?
  4. I see - Sorry Ferret - you gave me some great info and then asked me what part of the Soar - I said where, and you said it was crap up that end. Sorry for not saying thanks for that advice, I will do so in the future.
  5. I'm sorry, have I been inpolite? didnt think I offended anybody, what did I say? I would never say anything on a forum (especially one I have just joined) to wind people up Sorry if something was said
  6. Pretty rubbish to be honest!! No, I had a good time - didnt catch a lot - just small roach and perch to be honest. The winning weight was 11pounds. I had a good day though (apart from my toes freezing off!) and learnt some good tips from a lot of the guys. As expected most of them were 50+ but they were all pretty cool. You could tell I was an ametuer though as I was the only one fishing with a rod - everone else had a pole - there was about 20 blokes there altogether. I think I'll stick to pleasure fishing though, as the peg I had was pants - and after 2 hours I would of usually moved to a better spot, but for obviously reasons I couldnt. It was a good learning curve though and I'm glad I did it. Cheers for asking as well Toby
  7. The guy does know its my first match - and I had a long chat to him on the phone when I told him I was interested in KJoining. They sound like a nice bunch of guys, so hopefully the will be happy to have a chat before hand and after. I clever lad anyway (he says!) so I know when to not push a subject or seek advice.
  8. between Kegworth & Radcliffe is their stretch So thats where I'll be heading
  9. Hi all. I have just bought a season ticket that lets me fish at a couple of places near me, one of which is the River Soar. Has anyone fished there or know if its any good? I'm not going down for a bit at least but as I'm entitled to fish there now, I wanted to get some info before hand. Any info would be cool Cheers Toby
  10. ok, I see - So best to check specific rules before hand Cheers Toby
  11. Excellent, thanks for your comments, sounds like I will enjoy myself. With regards to how I'm fishing, I only have a float rod at the mo, so if your aloud to fish more than 1 rod, I'm gonna be at a severe disadvantage, not that it matters mind as we have already acknowledge its the experience rather than the result!
  12. basically,I'll be catching shed loads (with luck) of roach and perch, I just want to catch fish - and enjoy and see what the experience is like of being in a match!
  13. By me saying "Have a laugh" is basically me saying I'll enjoy myself and the experience. I Don't mean doing a stand up routine on the bank!! Of course I will remember about fish welfare, I wouldnt do any thing to upset anybody. With regards to talking to the anglers involved, I'll save that for before and after - glad I have heard your opinons on that - as I can understand what route to take now. Thanks folks Toby
  14. Hi mate I am in Nottingham which is a bit of a mission from you I believe. I'm looking forward to the match and I will be taking your advice on board, I'm not too fussed how I get on tbh, the experience will be a laugh anyway. Cheers Toby
  15. Ok, cool - cheers This forum is so much better than others I have visited, everyone seems to be on hand to give you advice which is cool Thanks again Toby
  16. Hi Folks I am entering my first match this Saturday with a local angling club on a canal. I started fishing again after many years break (10!) last Saturday!! - So I know I'm going to be the least experienced guy there and I'll stick to what I know. My question is this, having never been in a match before, whats the general idea of match fishing, is it just "catch as many fish as you can, and the biggest weight wins"? As I'm a new boy, I was wondering if (in general) if the anglers won't mind me having a walk and speaking to them and asking questions about how they are fishing and what techniques they use etc. I havn't met any of the members before and by the sounds of it they are mostly old gents (no dis respect to the more "mature" angler out there) I am 24 and need to learn somehow. I can only really float fish and with my cheapo set up I've got, I'm not entirely sure of my kits capabilities yet. I'm off to buy a keepnet tommorow as I Presume I will need it, and some other bits and bobs. It's a learning curve and should be fun, I just don't want to be the guy who knows nothing and makes a fall of myself in front of everyone!! Any tips, hints or advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance Toby
  17. I think I will try ledgering on its own when I next go fishing. Is seems the general census is that you should do one rather than the other, and beacuse I'm a begginer, I think it might be wise to listen to advice!! I've got a match this Saturday on the local canal, (should be a laugh at least) which I will be floating and I think I'll go Sunday for the ledgering, I'll let you guys know how I get on. Thansk for your advice Toby
  18. I have just sarted fishing and I know how to fish with float pretty comfortably but I would like to have a second rod on the go by ledgering. I have never done any ledgering before but have been told its not too difficult. Can someone point me in the right direction to start?? Thanks Toby
