i have been trying to locate and fish for eels in my area when i was young i used to fish for them and they would be everywhere now their nowwhere i enjoy taking my kids fishing and we try for different species and my kids have never seen an eel let alone caught one i live just outside Daventry Northants and have tried various places near where i live but had no luck so please is there anyone out there that can help with a location and possibly a method at a place where we can have a better than averagechance of getting one.

went to the millpool yesterday and fished overnight and managed to knock cat fish of the list only a small one but i dont care so still need the others so guys please keep your ears to the floor and let me know if you hear of places where they are coming out.

yes it is a challenge and im enjoying it we used to do an anual works match but as there is alot of shift workers at our place it became almost impossible to everyone there at the same time so we came up with this based on the tv rod race it lasts a year and encourages everyone to go for all species rather than just carp which is why im enjoying it so much but have reached a bit of a brick wall hence me asking on here thanks for the help ill check the venues out .

For the last 6 species, forget fisheries. You could nail all 6 on the same bit of river if you put your mind to it.
Sticklebacks, brownies, rainbows, bullheads and grayling will all take a maggot legered in a river and loaches will be found alongside the bullheads under flat rocks where the flow isn't too fast fast.
You'll also pick up eels too.
That's a possible 7 species from the same bit of river.
If you can't catch a bullhead to baits, look for them along with the loaches at night.
...andy...
is there any stretch you recomend near to northampton or rugby area

sometimes shortening the hooklength can help try going down to about 6 inchesGood morning fellow piscatorians..Yesterday I had the opportunity to fish a new water which has a reputation for good roach and bream. I decided to try a maggott feeder as the pond was a bit exposed and the wind had got up. I've never used a maggot feeder before, though I do use groundbait and particle feeders quite regularly.
I was using a light feeder rod, middy inline feeder, 4lb mainline, 2lb 12oz hook length and a 16 hook with single or double red maggot depending on my mood.
Almost instantly I started to get bites, but missed everyone when I struck. I tried sitting on my hands to let the bites develop further, but they didn't. Every bite was a really good knock of the light quiver tip, but I simply couldn't set the hook.
It became very frsutrating, because I had obviously done enough to attract a good head of fish into my swim, I just couldn't hook them.
I ended the day with a small common and a decent tench, both of which hooked themselves.
So here's my question..... WHAT WAS I DOING WRONG???
Any help would be much appreciated as I quite like the idea of using a maggot feeder, it seem to create interest in my swim very quickly and had I not been such a crap angler I would probably have had a good days fishing.
Cheers
Arkie....

All the above are what decide on choice of rod. Give us some information and we can then offer some better sugestions.

actually i won a match float fishing for carp at a local water just last week so perhaps not so outdated
also i must be really old
1 i still take my kids fishing
2 i have no camo gear (open to freebies)
3 ok dennets cant be classed as a tackle shop
4 unfortunatly alot of places dont allow you to move spots
but my outdated thing is real lakes ( not mud puddles eg borough hill daventry)

I always try to mix a bit before i go, I find it takes about 30 minutes of being damp before its just how i like it. so i dampen a bit up before i go and just perfect it when i get there.
If you like your method mix sticky so it will stay on when you have a big chuck, try mixing some up and putting it in the freezer for next time you go. Seems to be much stickier when its been frozen.
As for this only using water from the place you are fishing, i use rain water when mixing at home as i don't fancy the idea of putting tap water with chemicals in it in my ground bait, although I don't know if it would make much difference. One thing fish don't seem to like is ground bait with a different Ph to the one they are swimming in, so this is one good reason for using water from the water you are fishing at when mixing ground bait. However having said what the Ph of your ground bait mix is will be strongly governed by what it was before you added any water. The Ph of a ground bait is widely thought to be one of the reasons why some work better on some waters than others, as not all ground baits have the same Ph. Maybe we should take a Ph test kit fishing with us?
i mix my ground bait up the night before if you add flavours it makes it better when its had time to ferment also if your using sweetcorn mix with the liquid out of the tin i found it is a killer

I remember Matt Hayes in one programme visiting Poland or lake pike, had just on Jack all week, he said he thought the lake would be better as the locals have eaten all the river fish
A local anger told me this week that a group of Poles had a BBQ on the W.Avon recently, the menu was foul hooked bream, chub and pike, and also mink!! Theer is a zero tolerance policy in Tewkesbury, We have a 'round robin' telephone contact list just in case help is needed to stop them taking our fish.
its a problem everywhere but the ea arnt willing to do enough i was fishing boddington recently and it took them 4 hrs to get anyone there so i think quicker action to be taken and make the punnishment imprisonment as it is poaching after all. they come here and think they can just do as they please it makes me so angry

Until I see documented evidence of barbel spawning in stillwaters, (not Angling Times), then I too don't believe that they do.
Having seen tagged fish that have travelled many miles up the Yorkshire Ouse and then the R Nidd to the spawning redds, I find it difficult to believe that they would spawn in a stillwater.
I wonder if the "baby" barbel have been put in illegally by anglers, or they are not barbus barbus, but another 'barbel' that has been stocked in with a mixed bag.
John.
ok enough i accept ive done a terrible thing asking a simple question i didnt say whether it was right or wrong i didnt even give my opinion so ill not be adding to this thread but rabbit you need to chill out mate my only crime is asking a question and if asking where to park and where the club waters are before i join is so secret then let em keep their membership i wasnt asking secret methods etc and if you learned things without never been shown your a better man than me ... so good luck mate and 40 miles away aint on my doorstep .im sorry i even asked and i dont feel sorry for myself but just wanted a answer without critisism i wont be responding again so i end my part of this here

Cobra
Give me a cpl of weeks we'll buy either Vauxhall or MKAA books and we'll go together. I live in daventry and have a van so can get all the gear in. I know radwell and sharnbrook quite well.( was on Vauxhall committee for 6 years before i moved) Still learning MK waters and havnt got out so far this year as much as i would like.
that sounds excellent

not only the fishing goes off but its dangerous if you have carbon rods

ok now listen i didnt say i agreed with barbel being stocked in still waters i asked a simple question and got abuse. my oppinion on rivers is id love to visit them and fish them but when i phoned certain angling clubs about them i couldnt even get info like where their waters start where near possible parking was, i was going to makins anywayso i thought id fish for all whats in there and was told of the barble didnt catch one so i asked. i also know my spelling wasnt up to much but i thought i wasnt in a english exam. as for the spawning theory they do spawn in stillwaters as shown in angling times last week so that theory is rubbish also if ur not going to fish for anything but native fish check ur history carp aint native to this country but im not going to lower myself to get into an argument i asked a question on a forum got abuse back and didnt deserve it . i take on bored ur advise on where to fish for them but every lake around where i live has been stocked from elsewhere so is not natural and expensive and fully booked for up to a year at weekends and im sorry but some of us work in the week. if someone in the daventry area knows any usefull info of local rivers feel free to let me know as all the info on nene club milton keynes etc is out of date otherwise if you cant be helpfull rather than abusive then do us a favour do reply.
ps this forum used to be good advise (that i will welcome) not an excuse to have a dig at peeps
oops there i go again sorry i meant dont reply and shame on me my spelling again but hey this aint a english class ... or is it?
