  1. ...... Jeeze every knob would have one!.........

Couldn't hold back could you :D:D:D Interesting that nobody's bought one yet, they retail for about £300 new. Maybe the prospect of owning a boat that's been put through its paces by a bunch of angling journos doesn't appeal.

  2. The method I use to surface fish is to wrap a piece of bread around the hook pinching it onto the shank and leaving the bend of the hook in the unpinched bread, the idea is to create a mushroom shaped piece of bread firmly attached to the hook shank.

Dunking the bread before casting allows you to get some reasonable distance without a controller float. It works very well, the fish don't seem wary of the bread shape and the line near the hook is underwater and so invisible.

i found out that i need to do at least 15 posts before i can do PM's.This is 11 i think

    Regards

    Rob

Well don't worry Rob, I don't think I'll upset too many people with this one so if you head out of Newbury towards Thatcham along the A4 after about a mile you'll come to the Swan pub on your left. To the side of the pub is the Lambourn and you can fish it all the way up the the first roadbridge you come to, about 3/4 mile. It's not particularly pretty but is free and provides good sport with Grayling and Brown Trout mainly, I've also had Dace and Roach. Last time out I caught a 4lb brownie.

I usually park behind the pub and haven't had any problems but I know that Chris prefers the layby opposite (probably the correct place to park). Trotted red maggots work well as does bread.

It's a bit overgrown at the moment and the water will be up after the rain we've had but if you've got half a pint of maggots it's worth a wander along the path trying different swims.

  4. Any one advise on the free bits of the Lambourne at Newbury. I have seen that it is supposed to be Shaw Park but cannot find that on the maps. Know where Shaw house is and have walked the stretch of river from the church down the gravel paths to the next foot bridge. Is this the correct part. Chris Plumb gave me some info in a previous post about the Kennet. If he could reply i would be most grateful.

Not had much chance to fish kennet lately. Had a couple of chub last time i got down there for an hour or so. Biggest was 2.5 lb

    Thanks

Tried to PM you with another free stretch but I think your PM facility blocked my message.

  5. Similar story here, very busy apparently (first time I've fished there) and nobody catching much, a beautiful place to be though. After five hours, one pint of maggots and a small dace plan B was implemented. A different river, a couple of small grayling and a PB brownie of about three pounds was the result.

A jolly good day all in all.

  6. Sorry Lyn, but I have been listening to barbel anglers whinging for years about barbel becoming exhausted and needing ages to recover. I have fished for them on and off since the mid 1950/s and never had a problem. I have also never seen the problem with any other barbel angler I have fished with.

Your example of only one out of eight points to a poor fish, not the conditions or your tackle/teqnique, and there is probably nothing anyone could have done to avoid it becoming distressed.

Why cast doubts over a well intended thread? Many people (me included) have never caught a barbel. If I do I'll land it as soon as possible (given the limitations of my angling technique) and then stand in the river to release the fish for as long as it takes thanks.

If I stand there for too long does it matter? I'm sure the barbel will let me know when it's ready.

  7. When I was looking for my own CP a few months back the Raven range looked like a good bet but I couldn't find anywhere selling them in the UK so I went with Okuma. As you say Ravens are highly regarded in their homeland and there's speculation that Okuma copied one of the earlier SST designs so I doubt that they are poor reels.

The SST3 looks a very nice reel and if that's the one you have a chance to buy I'd go for it, as a bonus you'll have something different.

  8. I anticipate a plethora of posts on this subject so I'm getting in first.

Well, I arrived at chosen destination as early as club rules allow on a beautiful sunny morning. Car park was empty but somebody had thoughtfully left a BBQ gently grilling smoked prime back and toasted baps, they'd even left a bottle of brown sauce.

After a hearty breakfast I made my way to the first likely looking swim. I hadn't fished this stretch before so it was pleasing to find small white signs attached to the undergrowth, the first one read "good chub swim, pre baited with maggot for the past seven days". I moved on to the next "three pound roach a certainty, only hemp will catch" but the clincher was 50 yards downstream "fish here for barbel, make sure you have water skis"

Kylie phoned as I was setting up, she was supposed to meet me earlier so I wasn't best pleased at being let down but relented when she said that her driver hadn't shown. Danni had kindly offered to cancel her appointments for the day and bring Kylie along a bit later, two's company and all that but I felt the decent thing to do was to agree to Danni joining us.

The fishing was great, Kylie baited my hook and Danni landed the fish. Lunchtime arrived and I reckoned I was in the frame for at least four UK records (five if you include the suggestion of a "Minogue threesome", is that a fishing knot?). I realised that I'd forgotten my sandwiches and as I prepared to head off to the nearest petrol station I noticed a strange looking ensemble fumbling through the bushes.

The Producer wasn't happy at being lambasted by Raymond Blanc. Ok so the contracts were signed and the show should have gone ahead but how was the Producer supposed to know that the financiers would take a last minute exception to the programme title "Kennet Cuisine"

I stepped in as mediator and tried to placate Raymond. He'd brought along some of the finest ingredients Le Manoir has to offer but it was only when I suggested that the programme be re-titled to "Feed a Fisherman" that he calmed down. Calls were made, money changed hands and the show was on again. I stipulated that I was only prepared to release copyright to the title if the food, service and wine were up to scratch.

I enjoyed a rather pleasant lunch with the Minogue sisters, it was irritating having to fend them off every five minutes but I struggled on. Raymond looked a bit stressed when he realised how much it would cost to replenish the cellar but if you can't stand the heat etc.

The fishing took a bit of a back seat for the next couple of bottles of vintage Cabernet Sauvignon and when I finally woke up the Minogues had changed into evening gowns. Raymond was busy loading my fishing gear into the Limo's boot.

Kylie intimated that there wouldn't be enough room in the car for Raymond and whilst I quickly suspected flawed logic I agreed that he should get the bus.

How can it take five hours to travel 20 miles?

So there we have it, a rather fantastic start to the season.

Yawn......is that coffee I smell...........only three days to go.

  9. ......the Victorian throwback Maths teacher..........

That's why you got a B. Similar teachers to mine, not enough of them around these days.

Off topic, potentially controversial statement but couldn't help it, sorry. Back on topic... the weather doesn't look great for my area but I've yet to encounter anything that'll stop my loafer from making its way downstream.

  10. I actually went fishing on the morning of my Maths GCSE, had a slight mishap that involved very wet legs, then had to sit through the exam will small puddles forming round my trainers.

    Did you pass?

This is my first year of the 16th being significant since I was a kid and the close season applied to all waters. Since then I've largely fished commercials but during February this year I bought a CP and re-discovered rivers, the close season came at the wrong time for me.

Monday is booked off work and I'll be trotting the Kennet whatever the weather or water conditions.

  11. This is a first foray into the world of lure angling and trying to use a centerpin is really making life hard for yourself.

The problems of trying to cast a revolving spool reel are largely overcome in baitcasters by the use of a super light weight spools and frictional and magnetic breaks. A centerpin has a relativly high mass spool, lots of centrifugal forces because that spool has a large diameter and no breaking system at all. This is a recipie for disaster.

In fact, the only person I've ever heared of using a true centerpin (not a sidecast) for casting lures was a Aussie and he was casting metal slugs in saltwater. The magazine article was rather incredulus that he'd demonstrated that it was even possible.

Oh now you've done it. That brings back horrible memories of my very first beach fishing session.....I was 12 years old. I had an 8ft fly rod and a cheapo centrepin and could not figure out why I couldn't cast my 1/4 ounce bullet lead any further than 5 yards and why each attempt ended up in a huge bird's nest. After all a centrepin and multiplier do the same thing don't they?

  12. Wileys lake in Newbury is a tench water. It's a RDAA lake but you can buy day tickets from the bowling center which the lake is behind (£6 two rods I think). Google Newbury Superbowl and have a look on the statellite map to see exactly where it is.

Apparently legerered plastic sweetcorn fished with PVA bags of small pellets works very well. It does get weedy though.

  13. I'll be on the Kennet trotting for chub with an outside hope of my first barbel.

I've been unable to walk the particular stretch because TAA doesn't allow it even in the close season, you can only go there to fish. No real plan as such, I'll just turn up, have a look about and then wander off.

  14. Well Gozzer, if your 30 acre pit is so overstocked with carp that you can't avoid them then it is totally outside my experience. There must be thousands and thousands of them in there...........I don't know anywhere around where I live that is stocked like that. Den

Join Thatcham Angling Association and pop along to Jubilee Lake, then you'll experience it. It's a huge lake on the TAA 'Lakes Complex' where catching carp is an absolute doddle, the lake is packed with them.

  15. Well, I think it's an idea that could work very well within an angling club or association where members meet each other and youngsters go along with parents to say hello and learn the 'trade'.

Whether it could work remotely over the web I'm not so sure. Anybody could post on this site and the destination of the tackle could never be certain, I have visions of the shakespeare fixed spool reel I bought new for a tenner a couple of weeks back ending up at a boot fair (if anybody wants it BTW pm me, it's horrible, postage costs only).

A nice idea Kleinboet and I will contribute if it takes off, I just don't have the same faith in our society as you.

  16. I've read many posts on this forum, where Carp get called rotten. Anyone tell me why Carp aren't a well liked fish?

If I catch one that looks anything like your avatar then it will be most welcome (if a little inappropriate).

  17. O.K I blanked!.................That said this is the first time since a teenager I have " bivvied" up and fished over two nights and I loved every minute, even though I blanked, the anticipation , company and surroundings were awesome.

Thanks to all involved. ( maybe next year )?

Well done to Tigger and all of those who caught something, from the photos I've seen it's a massive venue and I wouldn't know where to start fishing. I haven't fished overnight since the early eighties when I constructed a very homemade bivvy at the Darenth Leisure Sport water in Dartford Kent, KAYC's post sums it up for me.

    I'll be there next time.

  18. I've been bequeathed 2 rods, neither of which I had used till the other day. One is hash (can't do the symbol on my keyboard) 6, which I think means size 6 line, which is what I have on my reel, from memory. The other has no markings, but I didn't get on too well with the size 6 line the other day, and I think it may need something more heavy. I suppose there's no way to deduce the right size line other than trial and error?

Is the line on the reel weight forward or double tapered? One's easier to cast and the other is better for presentation but I don't remember which way round it is. If the line has been on the reel for a while it may have coiled making it difficult to cast. Try the line you have on the unmarked rod first, it should be safe unless the rod is obviously very lightweight. It's been a while since I fly fished but from memory the rod rating is approximate and has some latitude, a #6 rod will cope with lines between #5 and #7.

  19. but they may give away my secret location

Don't worry we'll find it. I've seen so many episodes of Morse where the vital clue is hidden in a seemingly innocuous photo, the 'villain' always overlooks a tiny detail giving away the location. I'm off to load up Photoshop and I'll report back in say.....six years?

  20. Think I may have to relocate.

Good idea, I've been living in this area for 18 months now (moved from Kent) and I reckon it's hard to beat for the fishing opportunities. Much of it can be free as well if you know where to look or kindly AN contributors help you out ;)

  21. Joined TAA today and had a look around the lakes, quite a few carp on the surface in horderns and also a small pike. Saw a fair few dead fish including a big perch, I quite fancy horderns as it looks a lot more suitable for float fishing. Im going there today so ill post here how i get on :)

How did it go? I've had a couple of trips back to Jubilee, once with carp gear and again with light gear. The first trip produced one Mirror of about 12 pounds caught on halibut pellets, probably what I was expecting.

The second trip I was careful to choose a swim with no obvious snags and just freelined a couple of bits of corn on a size 12 hook in the margins. It was a calm evening so I could watch the line, I find this almost as enjoyable as watching a float particularly when feeding bubbles appear around your bait. Two Carp of about 10 pounds and a lost Tench were the result, I got a look at the Tench before he gave me two fingers and it was around 3 pound ish.

So, I'm into the Tench and things are looking up for me at Jubilee. Next stop Long lake, same margin tactics but I'll giving the centrepin a go just to make sure it's still up for the 16th (not too far away now).

  22. How much did it cost you to join? I went into Thatcham angling a few weeks ago and was told i would have to pay a late joining fee of £30 on top of the cost for a permit bringing it up to about £70 and then pay again on June 16th. Is this what you had to do?

No I didn't, I wouldn't have joined if it meant that I only got the last knockings of the 2007/08 year before being asked to pay again. It did cost me £70 but I was told by the proprietor of the tackle shop that my membership would last until 16th June 2009. If I get a renewal notice for the 2008/09 season I'll be very upset and will be engaging him in further discussion.

  23. You did occasionally hook into a 'lump' when fishing for other species, but not two or three every time you went.

    John.

Indeed Gozzer, we've all hooked a monster once in a while when fishing for silver fish and I think that's part of fishing's attraction, you never know what's going to happen. But as you say when you know that at some point in the day you'll be holding off an entire division of Panzers with a peashooter then it's an entirely different matter.

Still, going back Monday with appropriate gear, no doubt I'll be pestered by gudgeon all day.
