  1. I walked in to my local Post Office, bought a new licence and was back out the door in 5 minutes. Not very difficult.

The anti-hunting lobby state that they are not against foxes being killed, just hunted. Foxes will continue to be shot, trapped and poisoned. miasma raises an interesting point, if it was proved that fish feel pain would you stop fishing ? I would continue to fish, whilst treating the fish as carefully as ever. Yet strangely, I stopped livebaiting 20 years ago because I was not happy doing it. I hasten to add that I was one of those that wrote to the EA regarding the Lake District ban. I believe the pain/stress argument will be the one that the antis will use against angling. They will not object to us catching and killing the fish, but they will claim that catch and release is being cruel.

I,m sorry the link I posted was incorrect. http://www.peta.org/feat/dogfish/index.html Don,t make the mistake of underestimating these people. They are seriously well funded.

I hope that all the optimism expressed is well founded and the "antis" dismantle their propaganda machinery (which gives a lot of them a good living), once fox hunting is banned/licensed/restricted or whatever. I,m not so sure. I can,t help remembering PETA,s poster of the labrador with the hook in its mouth.
  10. Dragonbat, I would like to "balance" your Shimano comment "over-priced and over-rated". I have used Shimano reels for too many years to remember. I currently own 12 ,including TLD 30,s, Sedona 3000, Aero 6010, Aero 3500 ,Aero 4500 and Stradic models. They have never given me any problems, despite being used very regularly. I believe they represent very good value for the money.

  12. I was invited to a Corporate Day some years ago, we were to see a flying hawks display and then trout fish the rest of the day. Most of the guests had never seen a hawk (or a trout rod) and we all walked off to the edge of this field of wheat stubble. The handler cast off his hawk (breed?) and it climbed high in the sky until it was like a dot. The idea was the chap whirled a "lure" round his head and the hawk flew down and sat on his arm. What actually happened was that a latecomer flushed a cock pheasant from bushes on the edge of the field. It started to fly across the field, we then noticed the hawk start to drop, this bird came down like a stone and hit this pheasant about 20 yards off the ground. There was feathers everywhere and they both landed in a heap with the hawk on top. All the others were in a state of shock. I was the only one that clapped.

  14. Gaffer, I have done this using a 9 wt , 9ft-6in rod,a floating line and 10lb bs leader. I superglued a chum mixer to the hook and used very few freebies. The waterfowl were not a nuisance as I was fishing barely 15 yards away, and they wouldn,t come too close. I have also caught carp on a dry Daddy Longlegs. Its important to have a lot of backing on the reel, I use 30lb braid, for strength and the low diameter means I can get a lot on. You might try borrowing a rod and reel first, to see how you get on. Best of luck.
