  1. hi with cheep slave labour hitting this country i see our carp/tench /bream/ pike . are under attack from polish people what can we do about this, they are eating everything, was even talking to one of them [in very good english] he said in warsaw all the fish have gone and the same will happen in the uk. :wallbash::blink::schmoll:

  2. Wondering if any of you have sampled the delights of Spam Stinky French Garlic as a hookbait?

Just got back from an evening on the Warwickshire Avon, tried the usual pellets, boilies for Mr Barbel but all ware refused. So on with the SFG and bingo a lovely 10lb plus barbel couldn't resist a taste. Not the first time when I have been staring down the barrel of another blank the Spamalot boys have saved my bacon

Would be interested if anyone else rates this as a bait, I know its not sold everywhere Tesco's do in some stores, so getting hold of it can be a problem..

Can't imagine any self respecting person wanting to eat the stuff, but the fish seem to like it

Sorry posted in the non fishing Doh!! Must be tired

hi m8 funny you should mention that was in asda's last week and they were selling the stuff at 6p a tin [wasent out of date just wouldent sell] so i bought 20 cans and caught some nice carp not big ones but carp all the same .

  3. I will be spending a week in the loch lomond area soon and i can find any info regarding plug and jerk bait fish on the loch.

First up is it allowed and second what are the most productive types of lures, its nothing to serious just a hour or two here and there when i can get away from the kids.

hi m8 , use a wire trace my friend there are some monster pike in there tight lines.

  4. Congratulations - I have seen photos of big roach in this week's angling weeklies and the dorsal fin / pectoral fin alignment was identical. It's a weird fish, but it's difficult for anybody to deny that it's a roach - just an unusual one. It certainly deserves recognition - whatever it is.

hi peter /vagabond thanks lads tight lines :clap2::thumbs:

  5. Well done again with the fish Chalky and I'm pleased you took that in fun, exactly the way it was intended.

lol no problem sir if i was to argue over a 4lb fish that may have been a hybrid or a true fish i deserved to be shot, lol im still laughing at the womans weekly dig , he he thanks again m8. :clap2: see us scots do have a sense of humor [well apart from glasgow rangers fans ] BUT THATS ANOTHER STORY. tight lines all......chalky. now im after a good tench our record for tench is terrible ,not like the monsters down south. lol mabie have a trip down there any water tips lads??.

Congratulations , that was a fish of a lifetime.

thanks m8, it was a shock of a lifetime thought it was a small carp or tench, tight lines ....chalky.

  6. Well done old boy! It's a funny looking roach but the ref's decision is final - and it's not every day you catch a new national record

thanks anderoo tight lines , and thanks for all the help to everyone especially elton, ....colin.

  7. Nice one :)

Quick question - who is the top fisheries man in the UK?

dr, mark everart [got the phone call from gary numan at anglers mail] he passed the info onto the brittish fisheries commitee.

  8. The captor of this fish is going to post details later, but can you people tell if it is a genuine roach or a hybrid?

  9. hello there im new to the world of tench fishing and on discovering one of my local ponds has tench from 1lb up to 3lb stacked in it i was wandering what would be the best way to go about catching them????

    thanks in advance :)

hi george, i would use a light test curve rod [carp] a bed of hemp with sweetcorn/maize hair rigged with sweetcorn and arti sweetcorn. but there are many ways to catch them. good luck m8.

  10. The following data from "The Angler's Freshwater Fishes" by Harvey Torbett may be helpful. I find this one of the best books on the subject, especially on hybrids, although it's long out of print. All it's missing is colour photos.

The 1st figure below refers to the number of branched rays on the anal fin; the 2nd to the branched rays on the dorsal fin; the 3rd to the scales along the lateral line; the 4th to the rows of scales above the lateral line; the 5th to the rows of scales below the lateral line.

    Roach 9-12, 9-11, 40-46, 7-9, 3-4½

    Rudd 10-13, 8-10, 39-44, 7-8, 3-4

    Roach/Rudd 11, 9, 42-43, 8, 4

In distinguishing features Torbett describes the roach as "Silver or bronzed. Pink fins. Dorsal fin level with ventrals, top lip prominent."

For rudd he states "Golden-bronzed. Blood red fins. Dorsal well behind ventral level. Bold lower lip, acutely oblique mouth."

No general description is given for hybrids, presumably as they vary so much.

I'd add that in my experience colour is not as important as other factors in identifying fish. This is because it varies from water to water, and even fish to fish. Additionally both photos and computer screens may not give the true colour.

More important are the position of fins, and the scale and ray counts.

Whatever it is, it's a magnificant fish. Congratulations to the captor!

hi steve many thanks, its being looked at by the scottish federation for course angling as well i should find out 100% tomorrow.......chalky.

  11. My money is on it being a roach.

The signs are there and have been commented on in quite a few posts.

I believe the colouration and two toning elements, which could cast any doubt, are due to camera angles and lighting.

hi again heres one of the e mails i got that sounds encouraging - If it is of any help Chalky, the identity can be established by

    > counting the number of branched rays in the anal fin.

    > Roach have 9-12, Bream 23-29, while the hybrid is intermediate with

    > 14-19.

    > If the specimen has more than 12 such rays it can not be a true Roach.

    > Looking at your fish its got Roach written all over it.

    > Well done again m8.

    > Tight lines Viv.....

hi m8 thanks im getting excited again instead off :wallbash: , ive had a lot of posts here in scotland and almost every one say 100% roach, but knowing my luck :wallbash: ....tight lines ....colin[chalky].

  13. ...and there are reputed to be NO roach in the water where I caught the fish illustrated in Post 8

Very difficult to prove the absence of a fish just 'cos no-one's caught any

i agree totally very possible there are rudd in there and even bream, but the water has been there for hundreds of years with no reports of rudd bream being caught. but the plot thickens as the last guy said lol. :wallbash:

  14. Hi Cory, Ahhh, Fintry, spent many a good night in the Clachan, or the Inn...:)
