  1. I've no idea, Lozz. What are the reasons for the disgruntlement? (is that a word?!!)
The main gripe seems to be that this was done behind closed doors decisions made on our behalf and we werent even cosulted if we wanted this .I and quite a few others are suspicious of the AT whether this is justifyed or not remains to be seen but there track record doesnt seem that great.
  2. Hehe, yeah I've been looking at them too, VERY nice bits of kit. There is some good, in-depth stuff on the Humminbird site and also the side imaging site which i've been genning-up on over the last few days. There are two models, one of which is a more compact unit (thus mire suited to kayaks). One thing to bear in mind is that you can buy it cheaper from the States but if you do you are buying an inferior unit (there are previous discussions on here relating to that) with a one-year US warranty rather than a two-year UK warranty and also it would not be legal to use it in this country as it is not CE marked and therefore doesn't comply with European standards. UK customer is very good too. But back to the side imaging, what a perfect addition to a boat - never be bored again!!! I want one. And a 3D one.

Oh, I asked JO about Q1. Answer is yes, a theoretical flat line.

dual frequency - 200khz shows an area of bottom 1/3 the depth (ie 12 ft deep, 4 ft circle), 83khz shows same area as depth (ie 12ft deep, 12ft circle).

Narrow beam and wide beam fish symbols are displayed differently (ie red/blue, solid/outline) and on some units ones to the left side face left, right side face right. Ones on side imaging smile and occasionally pose.

The display will show everything at the bottom that it can - highest point on top, then through different colours or greyscales. This allows you to interpret softness/hardness of the bottom etc.

It's all on the Humminbird site, you just need to look through it - and there is a LOT on there. Now, why the hell is my GPS coming up as disconnected?!

Q1. I thought looking at the images of fishfinders, that they gave a contoured view of the bottom to the left and right of the boat (with the boat being in the middle of the display). However, after looking further, it seems that the display scrolls, and is made up of the history of foward movement. ie. If the boat is stationary for a period of time, then a flat horizontal line will eventually be drawn across the bottom of the screen. Is this correct ?

What you see just coming into the screen is below you everything else has passed behind you if you stayed still you will get a flat contour with maybe a bit of undulation due to the swell

Q2. If this is correct, then what is the point of having dual frequency/wide scanning units ? It seems to me, that if I am correct, then you cannot tell from the display, where the fish/bottom features are, in relation to the boat. ie. all you know is that they are within the SONAR beam cone somewhere (could be to the left or the right, or directly under the boat !!). In fact, it seems that in a way, you are worse off with a wide angle 90 degree 83 khz beam, because all you know is that there may be a fish within 30 yards of the boat, somewhere to the left or right ????!!!

In dual beam mode the contour is usally what is directly under the boat depending on model and manurfacturer fish will be shown facing left for left side of boat right for right hand side some show outline of fish for left solid fish for right .

Q3. Again, if I am right on Q1, then what IS being drawn to show the bottom at any given instant - is it the highest point within the scanned area (ie. the highest point on the bottom in the 60 degree slice beneath the boat) - or maybe the lowest point ?

To sum up just coming into screen right below you already on the screen youve past it .i mainly use mine to find features unless you buy a good quallity finder the chances are the returns that have a fish symbol are a mix of fish weed and suspended debris anyway as the saying goes find the structure find the fish best way to learn is play play play soon youll know by the bottom line wether the bottom is made of rock sand mud

  3. Hi all just got ram mount rod holders off ebay £13.99 (H20 kayaks) they also have scottys at £21 they also stock Crazy Creek seats dont know how they sell them at that price it was almost half the price i could find anywhere else. :punk:

  4. Glad you enjoyed it today Steve, shame we could'nt get you a fish. Lozz and Pete had a hectic session as the light faded, that clear water did'nt help, coupled with the bright sunlight. We're not used to clear water off Essex.

knew it was the clear water so pete kindly turned the water YELLOW and the bites started instantly :bigemo_harabe_net-163:

  5. If only i could be plagued by codling every where i go was expecting thornies didnt expect the codling all around 1 1/2 lbs to 2 1/2 lbs kept a couple for tea best fishing ive had all year fish with every bait didnt even get a chance to rig my 2nd rod thanks for the mark h

  6. for winter fishing you realy need a dry suit breathable fabric is best if you were to take a dunk in a floatation suit it would offer no real protection form getting wet as for peeing get one with front zip i have also heard of people sliping flask down dry suit job done then empty

  7. Hi codshead still a few maccies about have had a couple of bass loads of small whiting and 2 codling 2 1/2 pound 6 pound lost a huge bass off the mulbery harbor section off littlestone will keep an eye out for meets as most of my launches are from pebble and shingle beaches and that is my biggest concern about getting a dorado

  8. thanks for info big game is my first fishing yak and was talked out of prowler by dealer cant really fault bg does what it should but to slow and can be very wet ride in short chop usually do 5-6 miles and always have to play catch up

  9. Hi all am thinking about getting a dorado but am worried about durability. I have a prowler big game and use a sea tug and there are quite a few scratches on the bottom no probs being plastic but with the gel coat finish on the dorado would this be a problem .The big game is just to slow and cumbersome i need a new yak any other suggestions gratefully received.

  10. Hello Lawrie, yes it is BUT the date is now changed to 12-15 October.

First up, you will need a freshwater fishing licence - http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subje...n=1&lang=_e

Accomodation, subject to enough bods, is £28.60. Cheque in advance to me please, but payable to the site. My address is 35 Grosvenor Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk NR330BW. If there aren't enough, or too many bods the price will vary slightly but it won't be much different.

Bring the gear you have and I'll help out with what I can if it's not right. You'll need some lures though, have you got any? Additionally you will require needlenose pliers, sidecutters and a camera! That's the bare minimum for piking.

Ocean Kayak have kindly offered to have the demo fleet there for us to play with, thanks Andrew.

Venues that don't involve the car are Oulton Broad and the Waveney, Lake Lothing (mullet record) and out through Lowestoft harbour to Lowestoft, Pakefield, Kessingland or north to Corton etc. With the car you can avoid the paddle to and exit from the harbour and do same again and perhaps Southwold/Aldeburgh/Orford or there are more rivers and broads open to you.

I have no idea as to which species are available in the local patch of sea in October and am not convinced there are any fish in the sea anyway from my experience!! Pike should be on the feed nicely by then though and other coarse fish are available. I can preorder bait and collect for everyone.

    It should be good!

thanks for reply got lures pliers and camera (very good condition due to lack of fish in sea were i live) unfortunately new date is on the missis birthday

  11. 14-17 Sept Eastern Meet

Okay, another try. As the tope are no longer being chased in Wales it’s time to organise an Autumn Broads meet. This is an open invite.

The intention is to take a caravan at Oulton Broad:

    http://www.broadlandvillage.co.uk/

This would cost £30.25 for the weekend per person, and we’d have it Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, based on six people sharing. Greater or lesser numbers wanting to come will obviously affect this price but around a tenner a night ain’t bad!

The site itself features a gym, sauna and (nice) pool, launderette and beauty salon (I always have a manicure after a session you know) and has been rated as Excellent for facilities by the tourist board. The caravans have duvets (but no towels), cooker, fridge, microwave, gas fire, TV, electric heaters, toilet and shower. There is also an onsite bar and restaurant.

The site has a marina so we can again launch direct from here and is also close to pubs and food places etc. The Broad goes straight onto the Waveney and also, via a short portage, into Lake Lothing, a saltwater harbour estuary (record mullet taken from here) and thence through to the sea via Lowestoft Harbour (2 miles). This broad is where I do most of my piking and also holds other coarse fish such as bream, perch, roach, rudd and eels. Obviously you’ll need a coarse licence for the freshwater fishing, or if you prefer to go to sea then it’s a short car ride down to the beach and you can launch easily pretty much anywhere.

Walking distance can see you ok for Chinese and Indian takeaways, Indian and gourmet restaurants, chandlers, fish and chips, mini supermarket and pubs. Alternatively the train is nearby and can have you in Lowestoft quickly for further choice. Bait can be got from here as well so no problem on that front.

There are other broads and rivers in easy car range too, as well as other beach sites so there is something for everyone and with a bit of luck September will be mild, and the fish on the feed.

Oh, and for a bit of fun we can also have a competition each day - say a species hunt, largest fish and most fish.

Please pm me if you wish to attend.

hi mark is this meet still happening i have never freshwater fished before but would love to catch a pike im sure i must have some saltwater gear suitable for the job cheers lawrie
