  1. Thanks Ken. Will have to check them out. When we tried singles on big bodied plugs we put them on oversized split rings so had a similar set up but these with the eye in line with the hook mauy be better. I still have concerns about the fact you would probably need a much larger single than treble but will definitely check them out.

  2. BIG difference between here in London and down where I was in sleepy Kent! EVERY morning when I turn up ay some spots on the Thames there are Polish lads fishing. Soon as I/others turn up they pack up and leave. And why? because they've no licences and a bag of fish! How do I know they've got no licences? simply because the other Polish lads who wander down just after it gets light for a few hours before work tell me! These lads do take the odd Jack for eating but handle ALL with respect and return anything mush over 5lb. They hate the fact that so many of their fellow countrymen get them such a bad reputation. But they tell me its exactly the same back home where there are several distinct groups of "anglers" first the "sport fishermen" who as it implies fish for the fun of it but do take the odd fish to eat, next the guys who fish purely for the table and lastly those who catch fish to make money! Obviously a bit of cross over in the groups but that's basicly it.

People also speak with a lot of "authority" about how in other countries the general taking of fish doesn't or does affect fish stocks. Makes me wonder how long they've lived in these countries? Ive lived in both France and Germany for several years (not just a holiday fishing trip) I can tell you that from what I saw and experienced the wholesale killing of fish (which in Germany for example is LAW!) I saw no sign at all of diminished stocks......well non predatory fish at least! BUIT these are huge water systems with (despite the numbers of anglers) a much lower "angler per amount of water" ratio. AND yet the predator fishing in both France and Germany is totally stuffed! also I reckon more anglers fish for predators than other species. Simple reasons are surely that predators are both delicate and tasty!

But comparing our waters with European waters is foolish no comparison at all! Other than the "commercial" European waters....such as the one in the quoted Matt Hayes "Lake Adventures" program......... Another bit of my simple logic is why do people think that so many German and French anglers go to Ireland to Pike fish?

I don't pretend to know the answers or indeed feel 100% sure I even understand the problem but I know when I read third hand "knowledge"!

  3. Seems most here are more interested in trying to claim the moral high ground rather than bother to read what people are saying.

Phone although I in general practice catch and release am quite aware of what goes on in the rest of the world (and that to me isn't just the US) I have no problem what so ever with the killing of fish as long as its within the laid down rules (if any) of that country. And then that's because usualy rules have been put down for a reason! But surely you know me well enough for me not to have to point that out after all these years?

Again non pikers have took the chance to dig about live baits and trebles (despite it not realy affecting their own fishing because they don't do it or understand it!) Like Andy says just because its a pike in this particular clip does it matter? I for one would be asking the same questions regardless of species.

Interesting to see the split of both "yes and no" this should be shown and the reasons for and against.

Im personaly leaning towards agreeing with Brian that we shouldn't have ant restrictions as such on AN but do disagree that most UK anglers know the difference (well the ones Im concerned about that would copy any bad practices shown)

  4. The Black Prince were certainly gash Ajay but often all we could afford! Mad thing was there were several other similar priced alternatives that were far better from bot Anon Shaw and Winfield! Even back then I suppose the power of marketing existed! and brand names ruled!

  5. My reply to Phone ie "Nothing new" kind of rings true with all the talk of singles for Pike etc. People have been playing with them for most of my piking career (nearly 50 years) and writing about there use (often each time as if its a new discovery) Im a great believer in learning from past experience (both mine and others) I mention this as VERY few who have played with alternatives such as singles EVER continue using them. The few who do do so simply because it works for their style of fishing (in the case of singles for pike this is normally guys who use small sprat type deadbaits) One argument I can put forward without quoting scientific stuff, my research or even my personal experience is simply "If after all this time singles were better then why havnt they been adopted by pikers as the "standard"? And to me the answer is simple!

  6. All,

this a the "coming" look of a spoon

Here is a "newer" Mepps selection

    monthly-special-april-2014.jpg

Pretty much - the predator anglers who wish to recycle their fish are going single. As someone said, not every advantage is for the fish as they are much easier to work with.

    Phone

Nothing new Im afraid Phone single hooks on spoons have been around a long time now. In a lot of the Canadian fisheries they have been compulsory for many decades. BUT scientific opinion is starting to change that as well (the deep penetration issue I mentioned) Also no good at all on a large plug and absolute nightmare on a big bait.

  7. Mick Smith Im just as guilty of taking things the wrong way as anyone else! its the biggest problem with online interaction. No "body language" or facial expression does lead to miss interpretation. If Ive offended you please note I only reacted like this because you came over so negative! and you most likely (in reflection) only did as you mistook my interest in what you was saying as criticism and my intention to help/share experience the same.

Been on here for many years and unlike FB or most other Internet Forums you have a bunch of very knowledgable guys who more importantly are quite happy to discuss things in a polite and civil manner.

May I sugest if someone disagrees with you try asking why? and be prepared to read what they say and try to understand. If you are still not sure what they are saying or even if you simply still don't agree then say so! BUT say why! Its how we ALL learn. Again it has to be remembered that for every single person actively posting/contributing to a topic there are often hundreds of "lurkers" just following. I may be blunt, I may be opinionated, I may be a bit controversial but Im always willing to help and always justify my opinions.

  8. I had a Black Prince, an Elite and a Super Twin but none compared to my Mitchell 300! But of course there was a BIG difference in price. A month of paper round money brought a Black Prince but the 300 took all your birthday money and some rather dubious trout catching and selling operations! ;)

  9. I have been given old rods, reels, alarms, bait droppers etc, sometimes by people I have not even met because they would rather give them to someone who is going to love them and appreciate them and get pleasure out of using them than sell them to someone else.Just today I was sitting there fishing, got the place to myself ,I was using a Edgar sealy black arrow rod and an old Mitchell 300,I have fished this place 6 times now and not had a bite, but who cares, each time I use a different rod/reel,and I can't wait till the next trip,Today some old boy happened to come past and we started chatting when he left he promised me an old Mitchell reel that he has at home,he said I could have it for nothing and he would meet me over .there on Tuesday,I had never seen this bloke before .I can not wait till Tuesday,I had to pack up and go home ,all I can think off is what is this reel like.I am like a little kid at xmas, and long may it last .HAPPY DAYS

Can totally relate to that Mick. Back in the late 80's I had to have a big clear out of gear. Broke my heart but had to be done. No one wanted to give me anything like what I thought my glass rods were worth! They were all top range (in their day) models. I decided instead of letting them go for next to nothing to "bargain hunters" to let them go for nothing to people who would actualy use and appreciate them!

Several of my mates teenagers and other local lads used to help me clean up all my gear at the end if each of my respective seasons so when they were cleaning up all the old ABU, Hardy, B&W, Terry Eustace glass rods I told them to clean the ones they liked best and to give them an extra polish as they were theirs. Done them a favour and made me happier than being mugged off!

For many years I actually used to recommend top quality glass over cheap carbon, I suppose to an extent that still rings true just that as I mentioned before you can get some really usable gear for cheap these days!

  10. "you lot can do what you want"

Mick Smith I don't know why you bother posting on here! Unless people agree with what you say you get the arse! Same as you've said mate you do what you feel happy with and what you think works for you. However if you don't want people who think your "advice" is bad commenting and adding what they feel is better advice/a different view for the benefit of others reading what you've wrote then I sugest you don't bother! Certainly no need for the attitude! When people on AN post something its usually as they are trying to help not criticise.

Yes the "Uni Rig" is a good rig Neil G admittedly I don't use it with livebaits but its a good rig for casting deads long range. Again though the single needs to be kept a sensible size and IMO the size 6-4 you mention is spot on.

  11. I would second Gozzers plan!

Budgie the problem with backwind is that modern reels are too smooth and the handles are counter balanced so they have a tendancy to overrun and tangle.

    Rich

Ah but even the better quality (well the low gear ratio ones) of "yesteryear" ;) had this problem Rich....that's why we packed them out with grease/Vaseline! Its what I do still to this day with ultra long range fishing where Im forced to use surfcasting er sorry "Big Pit" reels. But point taken a lot of modern reels without a bit of attention probably would backwind to freely and cause problems.

  12. Im afraid callous as it may sound I have to agree with Andy here, and as much as I don't think showing the poor treatment of fish on a website that is primarily based on catch and release of the bulk of our freshwater catches is appropriate nor do I think its appropriate to drag in world affairs no matter how bad the situation may be for some. No sorry its a **** poor cop out to try and compare fishing to world affairs. If you don't like negative comments about your video then maybe you shouldn't risk attracting any by simply not posting your film in the first place?

More than happy to disuss the differences in our fishing ethics with you, in fact Ive not actual got a problem with what you do in your own country as your in a far better position to judge than I. More than happy to explain the British ethic and why we treat our fish differently and have a different attitude to killing etc BUT if you want to drag politics in to it or go for the sympathy vote then simply do one!

  13. There are about 1500 fatal drownings in the UK every year. Roughly 1000 of these happen within a few metres of safety.

In a large majority of cases a life jacket would have saved life.

Many people will think the idea of wearing life jackets as PC or "nanny state"

I have been a sea survival instructor and fast rescue boat instructor for the offshore industry. During that time I have worked and trained with, and have been trained by, members of the RNLI, RYA and The Royal Marines "Raider" Squadron SBS.

None of those guys would go afloat without a life jacket.

If it's good enough for them etc.

Again in total agreement. In the early Trout reservoir piking days many of the guys attending the "trials" / "fish ins"/ "culls" had no experience of piking from a boat on any water let alone a big reservoir. It was worrying to see the lack of watermanship and regard (appreciation?) of safety. This was mainly due to the obvious reason of in experience but also (sad to say) a rather cavalier attitude put on purely to impress/hide this inexperience.

One of my favourite anecdotes was the group of obviously new to boats anglers taking the **** out of Gord Burton for wearing a life jacket (incidentaly on a day where the wind was so bad we decided to cancel and not allow any of the anglers out!)...... They asked "Cant the Legend swim then Gord?" his dour but very poignient reply was "Yes, but my parka cant"........... and very true as well.

  14. Ah, that's the same experience that tells you when it's OK to use a flourocarbon leader, or when it's OK to kill and eat a fish, or whatever else...!

I think if there's a principle of legislating to the lowest common denominator it has to apply to everything, and particularly where human life is potentially put at risk...?

Yes totally agree. I was just admitting that Im not perfect! as are not most of us. It doesn't mean we shouldn't always try to promote the right thing though even if we are sometimes guilty ourselves of not doing it!"

  15. Trouble is (and I suspect we are all guilty of it as I know I certainly am!) "familiarity breeds contempt"! the more experienced we become the more competent and therefore CONFIDENT we become! I sometimes (in fact quite often) stand in a boat when lure fishing, I always carry a life jacket but don't always wear it! well not in some situations any way. The experience teaches you when you should always wear one (although I agree that it can be argued that you should ALLWAYS) and human nature being what it is we do tend to have our own preferred, self imposed guidelines/rules. Of course back again to the "idiot factor" that's very much running through recent threads, maybe its just as wrong for me to say I don't always wear one as it is to show bad handling etc? working on the same premise that "Budgie does lots of piking and he don't always wear one" which could be adopted by those who don't have the experience/understanding to make an experience based decision? Due to this a lot of Pike pages/mags etc wont publish photos of anglers in boats not wearing life jackets.

Similar situation to why although still openly defending and promoting livebaiting and arguing against the validity of the application of section 30 constraints on livebaits wont publicly give information on the collecting/storing/transporting of such

  16. I do understand the need to legislate for the lowest common denominator. I'm probably overly sensitive to this type of thing as I'm forever being told that there's only one right way to fish and I'm not doing it right!

Because my views are often out of sync with modern ones (and Im not shy to put them forward) I get told Im doing it wrong all the time! but as its usually by people whose "experience" is limited to last months edition of the latest Carp mag Im quite frankly not that worried!" I let my peers judge me and strangely enough they don't seem to disagree that often!" and when they do its normaly both interesting, valid and educational so I welcome it!

  17. I assumed as much. While I understand Andy's passion and accept the essence of what he is saying is correct this is a perfect example of how treating such issues can back fire if not done tactfully! But as I said its Andy's passion that's no doubt caused this rather than any other reason. Got to be remembered that he most likely sees stuff like this every day and not just on the Internet but on the waters he actually fishes! Might not justify his "aggression" but certainly explains it. Most on here will see this for what it truly is but I do worry that many newcomers who don't know the "personalities" on here wont!

  18. Im not preaching to anyone Phone. Again just suggesting that giving "viewing time" to such things could be counter productive.

Anderoo I too don't always use either landing net or unhooking mat..... but like you do when the situation requires them! I don't like the "Pike Police" (or "I love Carp more than anyone else in the world" people) who go OTT re fish care demanding that all fish are deified! I cringe when I read people slating anothers photo because its laid on soft grass and not a mat! I 100% AGREE that we need to educate/explain differences and be tolerant of others practices BUT surely we should be carefull not to promote bad practice?

Anyone looking in here I think would be quite supprised about the way Andy has had a panning for speaking out about this but I suspect its more the way he has spoken out about it rather than people actually condoning what he is objecting to. A good example of how we need to tread carefully and try to educate/persuade rather than condem/criticise.

Another question though, where should we draw the line on what we show (and therefore even if un wittingly) promote? Ive never objected to fish on the fish mongers slab type pics (unlike so many!) Obviously dead fish (ones not directly killed by the angler showing) hung from scales etc nor any other type of "controversial" thing (as long as legal) but would we (for example) think it acceptable for Anglers Net to allow a post that showed a bent hook fixed carp rig? The use of a gaff? Instructing us on how to deep hook pike? How to cram 200lb of bream in a 6' keepnet? etc etc etc Im sure you know what I mean? Again I appreciate that some may say that it raises these issues and allows us to try and educate/advise but again surely the type of idiot who is likely to do this type of thing aint going to listen!? and all its doing is making some aware of these practices and so copy them?

Sounds like Im not giving people much credit doesn't it! But sadly experience has shown me that the Internet whilst supplying a wealth of good information that many chose to follow also is populated by many idiots as well! who wouldn't recognise good from bad if it was stuck under their noses (or even sadder simply don't care).

  19. Totally agree Steve and if some one was condemning the fact the guy was going to eat the fish I would be quick to defend BUT the issue is the type of angler Im concerned about wont realise that the fish is going to be eaten, wont realise that things are different in different countries and just assume what he sees is "standard" practice and as such do the same down his local cut! Just undermines what many have strived to change. Now on a specialist site with pike anfglers who DO know the subtle differences I would agree and as said be first to challenge the "Pike Police" when they started ripping the guy BUT that's not my issue as I said Im just questioning if it is a good idea to show such stuff especially when it could be seen by people who would think its the right way?

Basicly my issue is with (in this case AN) us showing such stuff rather than what the guy is doing, if that makes sense?
