  2. Perhaps I should add that the funding for this project comes entirely from the membership and the annual auctions. The works the R&C fund funds, don't only improve life for barbel, they do improve the lives of all river dwellers. A full report is to go out to the members this month,I'll put a copy on here at the same time.
  3. Good points Budgie, for what uit's worth I agree with your sentiments.

  5. Press release 28th March 2011 The Barbel Society is delighted to announce today a programme of collaborative research with Bournemouth University. Describing the work, Pete Reading, Barbel Society Research and Conservation Officer, said “This project is a major development in our barbel-related research, and represents an exciting opportunity to ensure our research and conservation measures are based on contemporary and objective scientific knowledge. We are delighted to be able to work with the University in providing the opportunity to increase our knowledge about such an iconic species”. The work will initially focus on deriving an increased understanding on the growth and recruitment of barbel in rivers and lakes in the UK, the importance of growth and recruitment in providing sustainable angling opportunities, and developing a knowledge baseline on the ecology of barbel from across their range to identify potential threats and opportunities to the sustainability of their populations. Work will include age and growth analysis of scale collections and review of scientific literature. Dr. Rob Britton, project manager at Bournemouth University, commented ‘In completing this work, we aim to provide constructive and objective information on barbel ecology that will help the Barbel Society identify their research and conservation priorities in years to come”. 18. Welcome to the Barbel Society Website. The national organisation for all barbel anglers. We had a limited response to the appeal for information last year, but the Barbel Society takes the view that a long term record of spawning behaviour will not only help to protect historic spawning sites, but also build on our very patchy knowledge of how spawning success can vary from year to year. We would ask all clubs, riparian owners and anglers to help to pool their observations so that we can pass on this information to the Environment Agency, and inform further research.
  19. Sunday 9th May 2010 at the Hinckley Island Hotel, A5, Watling Street, Hinckley, Leicestershire. LE10 3JA The Barbel Society are proud to present ‘Running Water 2010’, a celebration of fishing in rivers. Following the massive success of last year’s Barbel Show, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever before, but with a slightly different focus, towards all species that swim in rivers, both here at home and abroad! This year’s speakers include; • Pete Reading talking about avoiding Hippo as he tries a river or two abroad, although I guarantee that barbel will get a mention; Phil Smith (He of the amazing record of 16 double figure barbel from 16 rivers in one season!) talking about the challenge of catching record sized fish; Pallatrax on rigs and tackle needed to deceive, with practical demonstrations up on the big screen; Martin James on – well who knows, this one could go anywhere but we guarantee you will be spellbound as Martin is a top class speaker; Gary Knowles on catching big fish from northern rivers (and anywhere else he fishes); Trevor Harrop and Budgie Price from the Hampshire Avon Roach Project, with pictures and reports on the amazing progress so far; As well as listening to great talks, you will also get the chance to buy the very latest tackle, clothing, books, DVD's, rods, reels and baits from the well stocked trade room; learn how to cast with a centrepin reel by the lake; book a day's tuition with one of the professional angling guides attending or pick up tips on tying rigs or knots using some of the fantastic Kryston products. There really is something for everyone. Non-member tickets for the Barbel Society show, ‘Running Water 2010’ are now on sale. The take up of tickets for this year's show has been absolutely fantastic so far, with over 250 Barbel Society members already booking their place. If you require non-member guest tickets, they must be obtained prior to the show, by sending a stamped, self addressed envelope with a cheque, made payable to 'The Barbel Society' to: 12 Eastfield Road, Weddington, Nuneaton, CV10 0BB.
