  1. i thought i would have another rant as a follow up to my last topic "What to do in this situation"

pulled a sicky yesterday and headed up the canal and got speaking to a young guy who seemed to know his stuff and didn’t appear to be like the rest of the usual morons that inhabit the canal so we had a coffee and a smoke talked tactics (no venues)

he went over to his rod and a short while later i heard a whistle and i looked over to see him playing a large pike he gave a little nod to indicated he needed help so I walked over with my unhooking gear in hand and he most certainly needed a hand a big one.

His reel was of the kind that you get in Shakespeare starter kits, you know the ones made entirely of cheap plastic. Well he tried setting the drag to do something to help but it never worked I heard the clutch (if you can call it that) break and then entire thing imploded and the line tangled all over the reel.

I told him to walk up the bank when there is less resistance from the pike and if she wants to swim just walk back down don’t put too much pressure on her just take it easy and we’ll get her in after doing this for about 2 minutes he eventually got her in enough for another angler with a big enough net could get her out the water.

My worst fear was realized when I chinned the pike to get the trebles out to see that she was deep hooked. Having never dealt with such a problem and without my teacher andy macfarlane I had to rely on everything I had read on the pacgb website regarding deep hooking.

One observer said “Just leave the last treble its alright”

I got the first treble clear and told the guy to reach in my pocket and get my metal cutters and sniped the trace and got the first treble completely out of the way, I pulled the gut out slowly to reveal the problem treble, it was so badly hooked that all 3 points had hooked the gut and stitched it shut. With my cutters I told him to very carefully break up the trebles, which weren’t steel thankfully, all 3 points had been cut and everything removed. The gut retracted itself and the passage was free and clear I sat with her in the margins for half an hour as she had been in and out of the water for about 15 minutes (2 minute intervals between operations)

She sat there quite the thing in the big net while she chilled out a bit got the lad his trophy shot and returned her to the water and swam away. First time ive dealt with a deep hooked pike and the first time ive got raker rash. I look at it with pride that I saved a pike from certain death.

Oh yes it was probably a low double

Next it was my turn to catch a pike, I walked about 12ft from my rod to do a pee when my fox micron m screamed like hell, there was no beeps just one single tone.

I bolted back to the rod did the usual 2 steps forward hold and strike. Got it in close enough to have a look it was the most skinniest thing you had ever seen yet it was very powerful.

As I was getting it out of the water I noticed a flesh wound near the scissors.

I got the hooks out and had a look at the flesh wound it was still a bit pink so I assume its been fairly recent but then I notice that the lower jaw part of the scissor was completely missing and the top scissor was just flapping about freely with nothing to connect to.

Would a pike with damage like this survive long ?

Im starting to feel like I shouldn’t be fishing this part of canal as almost every pike taken from it is being mistreated but at the same time I think about what would have happened to the other guys pike if I hadn’t been there I was also thinking that if I catch any pike with damage, trebles, trace still left behind I can help them. What do you think ?

You done well Andy. To be able to deal with a deep hooked fish always good it may be your first, But it wont be your last. Where ever it be your own or someone elses. A valuable skill that all pikers have to learn.

  2. I dont agree with that sorry, Pike use all there sences when fishing. Sight is probably there primary hunting sence but they do use smell aswell and vibration. How would they find food in coloured water if they used sight alone?

As for other bait additives theres so many house hold things that work well. for other species, When i use to work in the meat trade i used the flavour glaze powders that the butchers use for flavouring chops. you know like tandori and chinese. They worked well in small amounts in groundbait for tench and bream.

  3. Never used foam as a bouyancy aid for pike. I have used balsa wood attached to the main rig via heavy line etc. If i need to precent a bait off the bottom i much prefer a pat, or simple float rig.

  4. Sounds like one of those ocaisions that i have had quite a few times. When you get so wound up with some one but your on your own and it really aint worth the trouble getting out your tree about it.

When your on your own its best to keep your emotive feelings under control and put it down to experience.

The thing that always gets me is numptys always seem to catch fish, Why is that?

  5. Check out the pac site that will give you some general guide lines for the kit you will need. Like Peter said its a bit late in the season now. If you seriuos about getting in to piking join the pac an over the summer you may be able to hook up with a competant piker to show you the ropes.

  6. I use to be terrible when i went in tackle shops, Like you say you go in for a packet of hooks or swivels and you come out with a bag full of bits and bobs that you dont really need. I do try to avoid tackle shops as much as possible these days i tend to get most of my bits online. Besides most the the tackle shops local to me are all pretty much carp orientated and dont really cater for predator anglers or pleasure anglers. Ask them where the pike tackle is and they look at you like your some sort of weido

  7. Must be honest, Ive got full sleeves and a chest piece. But ive never had anything done on a fishing theme. Tatoos are one of them things a bit like marmite, You either love them or you hate them. Myself getting inked from quite a young age was just a natural thing to do. As a kid my father and uncles were all military guys and all had them so as a kid i asumed it was something everyone done when they come of age. I suppose its an ancient tribal thingy.

I dont regret it ive had some good art done by some top tattooists and some of them are over twenty years old but they are still looking good, If i did have something done fish wise it would have to be a pike taking a nice mirror carp lol.

  8. Well i did fill the bath up and done a few experiments with running rigs. using leads of different sizes etc. On different surfaces The hardest thing was like i said was simulating a pike opening its mouth and sucking in the water. I started using my cupped hands but i could create enough of a vortex. So i found a large plastic container about 120mm diamtre and made a makeshift plunger. I manged to get some slight movement on some of the smaller leads from various distances but nothing conclusive enough to up hold my original theory on the cause of some dropback bites. When a pike takes a bait most of the movement of the water is away from the bait. So i stand corrected.

One thought i did have though whilst doing this was a possible cause for some drop back bites. what if there were more than one pike in the vacinity of a bait, And like we know large pike often compete in a small area for food. Lets imagine two fish moving in on a bait, and lets imagine the smaller of the two going for the bait and the larger one reacting to this with an asault on the smaller one. The resulting water disturbance would be enough to move a lead i belive. Obviously not something that is going to happen very often. Just another thought.

  9. Hi all, could anyone advise me of any stretches on the Suffolk Stour that are still free fishing or day ticket ? I haven't fished the river for years and would like to put a few days in before the season ends. Prefer to do a bit of roving rather than stick to one swim. Thanks.

Like Steve said, Dedham mill pool is day ticket and a small section just up stream. I belive the bailiff comes round still but i might be wrong. the LAA streaches up glemford way are day ticket and good fishing. Depending on how much time yuo intend to do down there it might be worth joining CAPS they control sa lot of mid sections of the stour and theres some good fishing to be had with a little homework and exploring. I fish it regular myself and its a very underated river with a lot of potential.

  10. Are we supposed to belive that a pike can create so much force flaring it's gills, that it can shift say a 3oz lead at distance of at least 18" from the lead?? I'm sorry but I'm just not having that for a second. It's a fish, not a fire engine.

You got me on one now Andy, Im going to fill me bath up and do some experiments with rigs. Only trouble is im going to have to find how to simulate a pike. Any ideas? lol

  11. Very much wrote from a ledgered deadbait anglers veiw I bet Wayne?

Thats fine Budgie, like i said it was just one of my theories. I should have said, And you were right i was talking about when using a standard running rig with a dead. Another point i should have made was the nature of the bottom. If the lead was well settled in silt or a soft bottom then it should do its job. But what about if it is sitting on smooth gravel? obviously the size of the lead used is a factor

  12. solid rear bank sticks are not realy required but do help with stabalising the bite alarm and droppers by quite a lot in bad weather conditions

In theory if your using a running lead you should get a drop back but we all knoww this isnt the case, my personnel opinion on why this happens is mostly down to the nature in which a pike takes a bait, when it flares its gills and sucks in the bait and surrounding water its forward motion creates enough disturbance to shift the lead from its position on the lake bed. Like on most ocaisions the fish doesnt always move off straight away and just sits there. so the slackening in the line how ever slight registers as a drop back. A pike could approach the bait from any angle but in the case of the fish facing you as it strikes that would account for a good percent of takes starting as a drop back movement. This is my opinion i might not be right but what do you other guys think.

  13. Like Budgie said, Your best bet is a small bait and a large lead. My favourite distance baits are sand eel and small dead roach. Theres many way to streamline your rigs like bait clips and useing lead heads. But most of it is down to technique. Eveyone with a little practice can gain a few yards on thier casting. Strong line or braid, Make sure the terminal rig is sound, check the line isnt tangled round the tip eye and cast that baby like you want to break the rod. Failing that theres always balloons or bait boats. But dont ignore fishing closer in.

  14. I saw the last five minutes of progamme called tales from the river bank,on a gardening channel the other day,I wasn't expecting hammy the hamster, but I wasnt expecting a fishing programme either(not on a gardening channel).Chris yates was carp fishing and dreaming of blasting a bait boat with a 12 bore shotgun, geoffry palmer was narrating. Is this an old programme as chris yates didn't look that young in it?was it a one off or is it a series?,it was on again the night after but again I only caught the end and it was the same programme repeated.

Hammy the hamster, Thats a blast from the past i remember that. As for yeatsey blasting bait boats i wouldnt blame him as long as its not mine. Met him once hes a lovely bloke.

  15. Im hoping to get out this week, Not back to work until thursday night so i hope the rivers round my way fine down a bit. failing that i will spend the last few weeks on a local lake piking. Its quite a shallow lake and i had a couple of nice fish this winter out of it and it doesnt get a lot if any pike pressure so its looking good for maybe something special hopefuly.

Cant wait for the spring this year its been a hard winter and a shock to a lot of peoples systems and the fish aswell. Looking forward to getting the tench gear sorted for April and May

  16. Drop arms for me all the way, You cant beat the low resistance when you get a take. I some times use a front buzzer as well especially if im fishinig at range just to give me a little early warning of line movement. But in recent seasons with the use of braid i rarely find the need.

I know a lot of guys that use bobbin type indicators and use them well. but the troouble i have seen with some anglers is they will get a couple of bleeps and ignore it, Putting it down to liners etc With a backbiter drop arm type if it is set up correctly it will pull out or drop back with the slightest pull on the line and you have to investigate and reset it.
