  1. Hi everyone

Just wondering what are the best boots to invest in this winter? My old skeetex have seen better days and Im thinking of investing in something else for this winter if we get one. Iam a roving angler so i dont want nothing to cumbersome. But something warm. Any surgestions

  2. I have over twenty rods and some ten reels at my disposal.

The questioned is which would i choose in most of my fishing situations and why?

If you participate you must choice one rod and one reel and give your reasons, Photograph's would be appreciated.

    My choice.

    1. My rod choice is a Maver Italica 14ft.

The reasons are that i love mostly to fish rivers and this rod is so versatile that i can and have fished, all float types, also Polaris type floats and when required a light cage feeder. The rod is responsive to all types of bite detection is extremely light so you could hold it all day long and up until now has handled all fish caught, from ozs to eight pounds. the other factor is that it looks good feels good and was sold to me at next to nothing by my good friend, who i have not met yet Mr Chris Goddard. The rod is beautifully finished in dark colours with discreet whipping and a very firm reel seat.

    2. The reel is easy for me, i have since 1961 used most types of reel, cheap, very cheap and in the price bracket of all anglers. The reel that reaches parts that other reels do not is the Okuma Interceptor 30, not the bait runner the standard reel. This reel is a polished performer, for a small reel size 30 it is large, the standard spool hold maximum 200 yd eight PBS more than enough for any type of proper fishing, the reel is rear clutch, but, i have found this to be immediate when required, as i mainly use back wind, who cares. Extra spools are only £5 and posted direct from the makers. All in all a great reel at great money. The reel could make a very cost effective reel system for most anglers.

There you have my effort, now lets see yours. :sun:

It would have to be my trusty north western 1 1/4 TC and a cardinal 55. Im a bit old fashioned lol.

  3. Abberton was a mystical place at times.Just because so much of it was inacsessable.

First thing what springs to mind though when the place is mentioned is the "double cracking" rule! An unspoken code of conduct on the causeway that caused many a kick off! For those that never fished there the sloping bank was made from concrete and the only place you could get a bankstick in was in the cracks between each "slab". As such it was the accepted thing to do to space your rods out acording to the cracks. But when you had the place to yourself it was nice to spread the rods to every alternate crack, thus "double cracking" Of course if other anglers turned up (you must remember that space was quite limited here) it was only right you made room for them.Mind you that didnt stop some from moaning!

First place I ever really tried to fish at long range for pike as well.Mainly due to the limited acsess we felt that by fishing further out we might be able to present baits to unfished for pike.Pre bait boat days and "ballooning" out rigs was the way. Also remember holding an impromptu casting "clinic" for some lads from Leicster. They were really suprised at the use of plumbers spray to freeze down sand eel/launce baits before the big chuck.

I remmember the constant domination of the culvert swims. People sleeping on the causeway all night and keeping the bank stick in place and reserving swims for other peoplr due down in the morning. Being younger then and being new down there i always use to keep away from the culvert and happy to fish further down the bank out the way of the more experienced anglers.

I remmember using balloons to. And the constant frustration when i was unable to strike them off. Until i learnt a little trick to make it easier.

It was a goood learning ground for the younger pikers and a very social place to swap ideas and learn from the older guys

You can still fish it on a season ticket now. I found out the other day. So if i can get one i might be given it a go again. I do miss it a lot

  4. Thanks to the constant comments made by Anglers Net aficionados who promote the use of centrepins, I'm about to buy one.

(Well actually my gorgeous fiancé has volunteered to buy me a Hardys 4" model for my birthday which is probably too much information for the forum but also a rather fine and dandy thing to do!) :D

    Anyway - to my question.

What is the best casting technique to adopt? The Wallis cast, the loop cast, the double loop cast, the side cast, the Nottingham cast or any other cast you may care to mention.

Some casts may be good in some situations such as when room is limited and others when a longer cast is needed.

Nonetheless is there one cast which every centrepin user should master.

I've only used a borrowed centrepin once and trotting/float control with it was a dream. But to cast to a favourite swim along far bank cover on a river 15/20 yards wide, I found it impossible.

What is your favourite centrepin cast everyone and why? Oh, and how do you actually do it!?

If you are only trooting smallish rivers you will get away with just pulling a loop or two. But the wallis cast is worth learning. It will take you a little time to master but well worth it.
  5. This subject seems to be worthy of some serious mass-debating.... ;)

I dont think theres is enough evidence to surgest that female pheramones can contrabute to catching fish. Mrs ballentynes fish all them years ago is the only acount i can think of. And she probably had a good gilly that day

I did know a carp angler many years ago who experimented with his wifes draws in some strange ways. I wont go into details of courseBut i will say the only thing in my bait bucket is the bait.

  6. Yes it was the only pike venue Ive ever fished where you came home with more baits than you took! Well it was the good old bad old days!

I know what you mean about being in shock all day the first time you seen it done!

    Yes Budgie

The culvert was crazy for getting baits. When the traps were there it was just chocker block with roach. of all sizes i can even remember seeing someone haul out one not far short of three pounds one day. The last time i fished Abbo was i think 99 and it was still doing the odd good fish. But a shadow of its former self. From the days that made it famous. When the fish traps were removed it started to go downhill. Over the years i had a lot of nice fish from there but i never managed anything over 25ib. Though i saw some lovely fish caught. And have loads of memories

  7. Has there been any more about the fishing being stopped there and the extra flooding?

Not sure myself havent been down there for a while been working away. but the last few times i looked at the place there was no one fishing there. And it didnt look like anybody had been for a while. Was hoping someone could shed some light on it If the fishing has stopped there it would be a great loss.

  8. Worse than you think - this isn't a hook in a finger:

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1630277.ece

    I think there's a lesson there somewhere.

I remmember a few years ago when i was doing a lot of carp fishing. I was at layer pit and i was in the water about to net a fish for someone when the hook pulled and the rig came flying back at some speed and it was only my quick reactions that stopped me getting a crack on the head. It has always surprised me that no body has been killed by somebodys crack off yet. Boy do them things fly sometimes

  9. The sun block has all been used, the endless BBQs in the warm evenings have fizzled out and the long, blissful summer is coming to an end, leaving us all feeling satiated and charged with sun, warmth and happiness.

I haven't fished properly since early July - just a couple of short trotting sessions to keep me sane - and the whole of the horrendous summer was taken up with an endless line of tasks and duties. Another year of no chub stalking, surface carp fishing, chugging surface lures for pike, baking by a hot pond or being tortured by nettles and grass seed along overgrown river banks. Maybe next year?

But now I'm free for the rest of the year! After such a forced absence I'm desperate to get back out there and try again at some of the many things I want to achieve this year. OK, the summer was awful but think of what's to come - giant perch, nocturnal zander, river carp, grayling, big dace and roach, maybe even barbel! There's pike, another crack or two at monster bream, winter chub fishing when it's so cold you wonder if you'll make it back to the car OK, I can't wait!

    And next summer, catfish B)

I think at the weekend I'll do my long-promised first attempt at a decent Thames carp. The river looks in good nick at the moment, I'd better take the opportunity while I can...!

How about you? What's left on your list this season?

Were only half way through the season guys, The best is yet to come. I love the winter those lovely cold mornings, Ice cold rain down the back of your neck, the wind freezing my beard so i look like scott of the antarctic lol. And of course hopefully some big pike and chub. And maybe a barbel or two if its mild enough

  10. You can invert the stomach quite easily by your self if you have a simple home made piece of gear. All it is is a leather key fob with a snap link attached to it.You simply clip the link through the eye of your trace swivel put the key fob in your mouth and youve got a "third hand"!

No need to push the stomach back down the throat either. Its far better to let it just retract (which it does) by itself.

Learning these basic unhooking techniques and using semibarbless trebles will mean you should never have to leave hooks in a fish.

I have to disagree with Wayne though in that the vast majority of fish with hooks left in them will die.Years of retaining pike for extended periods prior to relocation have shown this quite clearly.

    Hi BUDGIE

Your right you can do it yourself with exactly the bit of home made kit you mentioned. As for where you disagreed with me it was probably my fault for not wording it right. Most fish will die from hooks being left in the i can just recall a few ocaisions when fish have recovered. Not that this should be the case to start with.

    tight lines

  11. What to do when a pike has a treble hook in it guts?

Normally my Granddad uses single hook though live bait head. As he was losing some bites he was getting, I set him up with a treble set-up. I my self don't fish for pikes but I do know some of the do/don't s with piking e.g. strike asap to advert deep hooking. How ever the 5 pounder was greedy and got a part of the trebles right inside the guts, I managed to remove the top trebles and cut the trace away from the bottom leaving last set of trebles inside the pike.

Can pike live with hooks in them or they soon to die?

I agree with Elton. Over the years i have seen a lot of deep hooked pike. It cant be helped sometimes even to the experiencd angler sometimes they will just woof the bait down. If you happen to have a deep hooked fish you can pull on the trace gently and envert the gullet. Its a two man operation, One to hold the fish and one to do the unhooking. But remmember to push the gullet back once you have done with a blunt instrement ig a bank stick Also remmeber to avoid the gullet coming in contact with the gill rackers or teeth. The fish may need nursing for a while in a tube till you are sure its fit to go.

As for can pike digest hooks. I have known a few fish over the years that have been caught after a deep hooking and have been healthy. Pike have digestive jucies that can get rid of hooks eventually. Not that that should be the case. everyone that fish for pike should follow the golden rules that all pikers follow. I have been piking for nearly thirty years and it still puzzles me some people still on a moment think they will have a go for the pike without any knowledge of the speciesMost people think pike are tough but they are not.. Once on they are on the bank they are in your hands and deserve respect and careful handling. When piking stay swiched on and watch your indicators preferabley drop arms and watch your rod tips. Pike dont smash off with baits like some people will av you belive they can be very subtle at times. Esepcially in the depths of winter.

  12. I have been discussing what scares us when doing nights with my mate. All sorts of silly things came up including: Ghosts ghost , people, satan demon , rabbits, panthers, lions, tigers, gypsys, murderers  , thieves, tramps alsorts!

However none of these bother me, what does it for me is ........................ RATS!

I am terrified of them! It has affected my 25 years of Carping, it really has. I would love to fish certain waters and fish under my brolly for ease of moving onto fish but i cant, i have to completeley block any gap in my bivvy, i zip up completeley at night, again affecting my fishing. I go to france a couple of times a year but the first thing i ask is "have ya got rats?" If they have I dont go there!(Not that they would tell me when they have!)Bizzareley enough Coypu dont bother me whatso ever!

I always have a radio on at night so i cant here the evil creatures outside and if i do i up and leave doesnt matter what time it is!

If i get a run in the night i rattle the bivvy first and then run out stomping and shouting! Bad or what? My dad thinks it goes back to a time when he was pulling an old chicken coup down on our small holding (I was 7) and there was a nest underneath, they scattred and one run up my leg squeeling, i was hysterical and never recovered from my fear.

I need a shrink! It never stops me going though, i just endure the terror of darkness every night! And as I said i choose venues wiseley, not easy as most have RATS! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

Anyone else share a fear of rats?

Rats i bloody hate them! :(

the only thing that worries me when im night fishing is when i get home after a good night and have to tell my wife im going back again. lol

  13. Whilst float fishing for roach on the middle Dorset Stour this weekend, I was repeatedly hit by pike as I reeled in fish. It happened about six or seven times, in three different swims, with four to six pound jacks taking dace and roach and breaking my line. There were as many misses that I saw, and goodness knows how many I didn’t. In two of the swims, the splashy pike attacks signalled the end of the fishing, with previously frequent bites drying up completely. On the other swim, the pike attack seemed to make no difference to the feeding shoal, and I continued to catch roach (which the pike continued to attack).

What’s the best thing to do when your swim becomes attacked by aggressive pike? Should you just pack up and find another swim? Should you switch to targeting the pike themselves? Is there any point taking pike and releasing them away from your swim (I couldn’t kill one, as my Association rules implicitly suggest, however troublesome it may be to me)? Or would the whole pike-fishing kafuffle only kill the swim anyway? Is the best thing to do to ignore the pike and carry on fishing regardless? I’m not sure about that, because it means turning innocent roach into easy targets.

I understand about the need for top predators in the food chain, and that a good head of pike indicates an excellent head of prey fish. I love pike as much as roach, but they can ruin the fishing and I wonder what the best solution may be.

    Hi mikeT

I would say to you carry a few lures with you incase this happens again. And try to catch the offending critter. remmember to use a wire trace though. Once you have him on the bank stuff his mouth with some of the contents of your keepnet. At the end of the day pike are predators and are only taking advantage of a situation you have created.

  14. Hi all

Any of the members got any stories from the legendry essex venue Abberton reservoir? I fished it for many years from the early eighties to the early two thousands. It was a cold and beautiful place in winter to sleep in your car and freeze at night just to get the culvert. In hope that you might catch a monster pike. My heart is heavy with memories of it and need some comfort lol

  15. What are the best boilies and how much are they

im going to fish for carp soon with my friend and i want to know which ones work well

    Hello leeds

If you are just going for a try at carping for a day i would try to find out what the other guys are gettiing result on. maybe its the method spodding etc. Most carpers nowadays follow the crowd for short term results bait wise. But on hard pressured waters baits blow eventually and theres a lot to be said for for trying something different. Carp are like people they get bored and fancy a change now and again. Escepially the big fish that have probably been out a few times on Dr zeds wonder mix, Theres loads of good quality ready mades about now and they will all work. I personelly have always been a believer in trying something different. my favourite flavoures have always been maple and anything fishy.Mind you i havent done any serious carping for over fifteen years. But i got my wings in the days when it was still a bit of a challenge to bank a monster.

  16. Can anyone tell me if these lures are any good?

My wife brought me a box full back from one of her local regular boot sales. She only gave £5 for all 22 of them so no worries if they aren't very good; just curious if anyones recognises any of them? And if so are they any good?

    Fishinglures1web.jpg

I have always been a fan of the big s. Its a fantastic lure for all species and i have caught a lot of fish on them over the years, But remmember all lures have their day depending on conditions. At least at that price you wont be to scared of losing one or two lol

  17. I was fishing the Avon at Stratford yesterday, I was catching bleak for live bait when a young lad about 7 or 8 came up and asked what I had caught, I showed him my live bait and he laughed, he said what do you call those they are tiny, I am and expert fisherman and I can catch big carp. Why waste your time catching those if you go to the carp lake that my dad knows you can catch big fish.

I tried to explain that these were live bait but he didn’t get it and basically laughed at me. I did feel a little sad but I guess most kids only know carp lakes; I worry for the future of our sport.

I think the main problem today is people come into carp fishing without learning the basics of watercraft. Especially the young. Carp fishing is so popular now almost a sport in itself and most kids that fish probably have a father that fishes for carp and probably either cant be bothered to teach the basics to a newcomer or doesnt now a lot themself. Certainly from my expierince i know a lot of carp anglers that wouldnt know how to trott for roach, or touch ledger for barbel.

  18. the other day i was on the cannal, and a young lad was fishing on cheese. CHEESE!!!!

i had no idea they ate anything, has anyone got any random baits that they have had supprising sucsess with?

Hi i always found cheese a good coloured water bait for chub and barbel in the winter months. My favourite is danish blue i usually need it into some bread to make a paste. it has a strong smell and often you can take fish from a swim without any need for ground bait because it smells so strong fish will seek it out

  19.      hello all

Just joined the forum. I have been fishing now for over thirty years for most species mainly in eastern england and i hope i will be able to add some good input into this forum. I love pike fishing mainly and also river fishing for barbel and chub. I had the carp bug for many years but in recent times i rarely fish for carp unless i can find somewhere quiet which is pretty rare these days
