  1. Hi all sorry that pike hooking seems to be done to death on here and as a pike fishing newbie ide realy appreciate some addvice,so far through the summer ive only fished with lures and so far havnt experinced any deep hookings, but as winters moved in have found this method less sucessfull so question 1 is that allways the case?Sorry for this one as im sure its a real novice question why are normal single hooks not used when for instance float fishing a dead bait ?Ive read with interest the debate on circle hooks but cant imagine ever getting used to not striking as soon as the float twitches habit of a life time and all that. And if single hooks cause some sort of problem ,damage to the fish witch im presuming they do as no one seems to use them then3 why do pike flys have a normal hook in the pics i see ?,mabey they arnt but they mostly look like thye are.
  2. Thanks Emma and Noodle some great info there, emma is it only electric moters on bass and if so are they powerfull enough for a boat your size?and if you dont mind whats the piking like during winter on these lakes is it all dead baits or does the lure still take fish as this is my prefered method ,again thanks Rob.
  3. its right there above this sentence perhaps you should start reading your own posts
  4. No need for that mate i was only pointing out that a buoyancy aid suited myself better espesialy on a boat without a boom so theres less chance of being knocked out,and i have been in the water with it over a dozen times and find it more than suitable,if they were no good at saving lives then why do at least 80% of jet skiers ,kayakers, and windsurfers wear them and if they were as bad as you say surley they would be banned.somehow ive a feeling that you were determind to hyjack this thread and srart a row as from ur first post in it your telling me that its no use leaving my life jacket on the boat where im prety sure i never mentioned doing this ,the choices i make in my own personal saftey are mine alone and im pretty sure ive got most angles coverd thanks but for a so called saftey expert to say the difference between wearing a life jacket and a pfd is death is total nonsence,ps i never asked for peronal saftey addvice it was about suitabillity of boats anychance we could get back on topic because untill you turned up i was actually getting advice on what i was asking .Rob
  5. Thanks for the tip on the book colin ile try and search that out,as for the kayaks ive had a quick go on me mates and it just wasnt for me all just felt a bit to confined as i lke to stand up now and then for a stretch although me mate loves his and goes out in conditionds i wouldnt dream of and catches plenty aswell ive reaserched launching and your right there are some probs this is one of the reasons i fancy a smaller craft, was just wondering if anyone else uses them by the way 9ft norwegian pram dinghys were use to fish the north sea years ago not sure how many survived though
  6. thanks for the advice on saftey mate and i know that on a lot of sites like this people feel obliged to surmon on the subject and quite rightly so imo ,but im allready quite aware of sfatey in the water having spent 8 years working on the north sea oil rigs,i doubt that many small boat owners that fish the lakes would take along as much saftey gear as i would ,inshore flare pack, fog horn, waterproff vhf radio and mobile phone, saftey whistle, mirror, waterprof tourch, compass, survival bag, saftey knife, first aid kit extra food drink and clothing, and in some ways your right about the difference between a life jacket and a bouency aid in that a life jacket would save u in the event of being unconscious ,but i prefer a bouency aid as its eaiser to swim in and get back in to a boat ive tryed both and find the bouency aids better and at 65n it holds me in the water no probs, mabey the sinking issue is more down to what anglers in boats are wearing, myself ile be wearing a long jhon 5mm wet suite with a couple of non cotton fast wicking thermal layers on top then a semi dry kag and trowsers like the kayakers do witch are lightweight and warm , also some wet boots not walking boots hope all this puts you at saftey fears at ease and we can move back to disscussing boats and there suitabilty thanks Rob.
  7. as i said earlier ive got a bouncy aid jacket its a delta explorer 65n hopefully this should suffice
  8. thanks for that emma realy gives you a good idea of how bad conditions can get,as for my own safty ide hope not to be going out on days like that but as you say conditions change quickly ,and as for safty gear im quite well equipet with loads of gear left over from my jet ski days ie wet suit ,waterproof vhf radio, lbouency jacket, and some inshore flares, whistle compass ect ect.you say that your thinking of a smaller boat for summer Emma any ideas what type size hull shape ect? thanks Rob.
  9. looks like im gona have to start saving for a bigger boat thanks for the advice guys ,Rob.
  10. Thanks for the swift replies fellas some good info, the thing i dont understand is that boats such as the bic 252 have got a eu saftey rating of D and the bunf that appers on its web site implies that it can also be used at sea? also ive looked in to kayaks and had a go on me mates kayak a prowler 13 i think and it was great fun but im affraid i like to kep dry and belive me anyone that tells you that a kayaks a dry ride is fooling themsels good fun yes and suprisingly stabel but warm and dry no,Steve what sort of boat would u recomend plese would u go for a cathedreal dory type hull or a rounder shape gpr clinker type? from what i can gather a dory type are more stabel as a fishing platform and what would be the minimum lenght?does any one use a pram style rowing dinghy?sorry for the ammount of questions so far guys but this is the only web site that ive had any replies on so far ,again thanks.Rob.
  11. Thanks for the reply Martin ,would u struggle to get two people on board concidering this would only happen during a hot calm day and that the missus is a bit of a short arse.thanks Rob
  12. Thanks fellas .Chesters is that a 10ft sniper looks like one that im after ,if it is have you any idea how heavy it is out of water ?is it car topable? again thanks.
  13. Hi all great forum this been lurking for a while now being a newbie to freshwater fishing and i fancy getting a small lightweight rowing boat to fish the lakes in ,ive been looking a while now and im thinking along the lines of something like a 10ft sniper dory or a 8 to 10ft pram dinghy hopefully car topable as i dont fancy going to the expence of a trailer ,question is are they suitble for large lakes like coniston derwentwater or bassenthwaite ?are they stabel fishing platforms?ile be on my own in the main but on hot summer days{remember those}ide imagin the wife might want to come along ,any info from boat owners out there would be great thanks rob.ps has anyone fished from one of those bic 252 small rowers?
