  1. Hi just come back from Aberavon beach. It's blowing a hooligan so I didn't get the boat wet. I was in Caswell Bay earlier today, which looked fine but, guess what, I left my life jacket at home. What a bummer!! The wind looks better tommorow so i'm off to Caswell again; with jacket.

I'm not fishing yet as I have to learn re-entry procedures first. Last time out I found it very hard to get back on top. Safety first then kippers.

As you have probably gathered I'm a complete beginner at kayaking but full of enthusiasm. So anyone feeling foolhardy enough to join me tomorrow will be guaranteed a laugh at least.

I'm 56, live in Swansea. Mostly I need some advice about weather conditions and re-entry tips. I dare-not go into deep water before I'm safe. I'm doing a 3 hour course with Celtic Events at Caswell on the 26th of this month hopefully that will help, but all help will be gratefully recieved.

Hi,It was a shame about the wind today.did you try the far end of the beach, near the docks. The two breakwaters create a sheltered bay ideal for practicing. Theres also a free car park to boot.Im 54 and live in Aberavon. There are a number of clips on you tube, demonstating re-entry techniques, they might be of some help. I launch at Aberavon a few days a week, no doubt I will see you there some day.

    regards Martin

  2. Hi Tim,

Are you weighing up the pro,s and cons,or have you taken the plunge ? I would be glad to share any advice or meet up for a paddle,if you want to trey out an ocean kayak. My E mail is.....martinphillips007@sky.com.

    regards Martin.

  3. I once saw a skipper de-wing a skate in 2 seconds flat and then though the body over the side and it swam away I was shocked and horrified so don't do it

Ive seen the same thing done to a blond ray.I nearly ended up with a fight with the idiot that did it. No im refering to kill the fish, then de-wing it and dispose of the body.

  4. The last time I caught a skate and cooked it was way back in the late 70s, believe it or not in those days we eat everything :o including the bait

    Thanks guys,

I will give it a try, even if its only the once.I believe there is an old folk law, that you remove the wings at sea ,and allways leave the body at sea !

    regards Martin.

  5. Hi Guys,

Ive been catching a lot of thornbacks recently, and returned all of them. Im tempted to take one for the pot. However I dont know enough about preparing the wings. I wont take a fish untill i am sure that im going to eat it. So does anyone have any advice, about cutting and preparing the wings of a thornback ?

    Thanks Martin.

  6. Hi Martin/All

I hope you don't mind me emailing you out of the blue however perhaps you can help me as I am totally new to kayaking (well have kayaking a few times recreationally) and want some advice or ideally to try it out and see if it's for me. I am a mad keen fisherman having fished for over 40 years (course, sea, trout and salmon) but never from a kayak and wonder how I would find a SOT? I am hoping it might be a sport that both my girlfriend and I can enjoy together which combines fishing. Typically I would see it as a touring, camping & fishing ..combined – so I am hoping to find a craft with plenty of storage. I am 6’2” and find some of the traditional sit in Kayaks rather narrow – apparently I have a bigger than normal backside! I looked at a cobra Fish n Dive – does anyone have any thoughts.

    Regards

    Tim

    Hi Tim,

Dont worry about size mate ,it sounds like im larger than you. There are several good kayaks which are designed for big guys and all the gear you wish to carry. Ive chosen the ocean kayak trident 15. Its load capacity is great at around250Kgs .Its nearly 16 Ft long so its fast, for a sit on top. Its very stable, wich allows you to concentrate on the fishing. It has several hatches,to stow gear below deck,ie tent etc. I could go on and on,the best thing would be to call around and have a look for yourself,or better still, try it out.

I live very close to the beach at Aberavon and use a trolley to take the kayak to the water. During the summer im normally on the water 4 or5 times a week ,so any time you like your more than welcome to give me a call, and we will sort something out. My E MAIL.........martinphillips007@sky.com

    regards martin.

  7. Went down Aberavon about 2.30, too rough for me. I'll post next available window of opportunity

    Hi mate,

I went down too, about the same time, sorry I missed you. Maybe a chance over the bank holiday.

  8. I'm thinking of going out tomorrow afternoon around two thirty'ish if anyone is interested.

    Hi martinmoanna,

What time tomorrow and where are you launching from. I might be able to join you,are you fishing or just paddling ?

  9. Ive been off aberavon a few times, but so far the fishing has been lousey. Its great just to be out there ,but a few fish would be nice. Have any other swansea area kayakers been out yet,and if so have you had any luck. Im still hoping when the weather improves. We can arrange a meet at aberavon or gower, until then tight lines.

  10. Hi There,

I did suggest a meet at aberavon a few weeks ago,but it seems people are holding out for the warmer weather. Im hoping the weather will pick up for the may bank holiday. With any luck it will tempt a few people to take the plunge.

  11. I decided this winter to sell the solid stable mini X and buy a longer kayak, I'm more confident on the water now and want to venture further, so I bought a Perception Freedom Angler, this thing is the dogs rowlocks, its stable and a lot faster than the mini X, but it let in a bit too much water from the waves for my liking, so I returned it to Swansea Canoes.

They exchanged it and I took the new one out via the surf today off Aberavon for a few hours, no fish but a great day on the water, (sorry to the angler on the short arm whose line I caught with my trolling lure)

I've checked the yak over and its dry inside.

    THANK YOU SWANSEA CANOES

Roll on warmer weather and migrating fish. There are lots of kayakers in South Wales so we'll have a meet soon.

    Hi there,

I suggested a meet at aberavon a few weeks ago,but it seems most people are waiting for the warmer weather.Im hoping for a good spell over the may bank holiday.with any luck it will tempt a few people out.

  12. Hello mate,

Having tried a few.Ive opted for the Ocean kayak Trident 15.Im very happy with it, its long line gives a good glide and there is plenty of room for any amount of gear. Its previous owner however .Sold it to me because he found the Tarpons more stable. I would be interested if you have any ideas on that.

    cheers Martin

  13. Would anyone fancy an outing, either fishing or just paddling off aberavon beach on sunday. The weather looks ok at the moment. If it cuts up,there is always the breakwater areas or river to practice on. High tide is at 1600 hrs,so im thinking of launching at 1300hrs. Any newcomers to the sport most welcome.

    cheers Martin

  14. Hello all,

Having failed to get any real interest in arranging a few meets last year, I thought I would try again, so there it is, anyone from the Vale want to get in touch and arrange an outing?

Im sure we can all learn something from each other????????????

    Dawsie

Hi Dawsie,I am definately interested in a session soon. I notice there are others showing interest ,im sure we can get a group together for a great day out.looking forward to it.

    Martin (aberavon)

  15. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR TO GET SOME TIME OUT ON MY KAYAK I HOPE SOME PEOPLE LIVING NEAR SWANSEA ARE UP FOR IT HAVE A COMPETITION OR JUST A PADDLE LETS SORT IT OUT WHO IS UP FOR IT DAI :D

Hi,I live in aberavon and im keen to hit the water soon, either here off aberavon or gower.I see trhere are a number of

people showing interest We just need to suggest a few dates and make it happen. I cant wait. Martin

  16. Hi Rob,

Ive recently taken the plunge and combined the two great sports, having done both for years, only in their

own right. Ive recently sold my expedition kayak and after a 6 month search and trial period.Ive bought an ocean

    kayak,prowler 15 trident.

Im a big guy and I like to take a load of kit with me whether im fishing or touring. The trident is a long yet stable

yak, capable of carrying approx 250 Kg. I use the shortest leg adjustment and there must be another 8 inches to

spare ,so I should think it would fine for you.

I live close to you,im at Aberavon beach. If you like, you could come over and take a good look at the yak. I could

also show you where the locals do most of their fishing.

    cheers

    Martin
