Would a 10 foot rod be too long for fishing off a boat?

Thanks for the replies. I bought an 18g middy dumpy float. It seems like it will have the bouyancy to match the baits I will be using, I don't think I'll need to add anything to the bait. I plan on using deadbaits later in the year for pike.

What type of float would be good for fishing a deadbait off the bottom without a ledger? I was looking at the Middy dumpy floats and the slider floats. Thanks.
