  1. we have the same in our village ken. also we only have the local kids coming round who you all know. if it was going to be a free for all and strangers knocking on the door we would not have put the led pumkin in the window

Haven't had a knock on the door on Halloween in three years. I usually have some individually wrapped sweets in the house in case the local kids come knocking, but I don't put a pumpkin outside.

Locally at least, it seems to be accepted that no pumpkin = don't come calling.

Last year I did get a couple of knocks from older kids with no parents in tow but they were politely told that Halloween is ONE day and not to bother coming until the 30th - strangely, they didn't turn up on the night.

  2. as somone whos had a total laryngectomy, voice activated software can be a nightmare. the ford sync on my handsfree for the car will recognice my voice, but ocasionally trys to call some random contacts rather than the one i just requested  .having no voicebox creates its own issues but can be fun at times

  3. wev'e just purchased our first motorhome after being caravaners for 20+ years. health issues forced us to make the decicion. less than 3 year old eldis autoquest prestige 180. only 7500 miles on the clock. picking up 6th nov.

    Good thinking

We have just renewed our campervan, and went for a much more comfortable (but expensive) option this time

...and our other vehicle is a gas-guzzling "go almost anywhere" Volvo AWD, with bags of room for fishing tackle, automatic gearbox, comfortable-to-drive, sturdy if something hits it and has a very efficient heater for thawing out after a winter fishing trip.

Travelling first class in one's old age is something I feel is well-earned.

  4. I like facebook, warts and all, sometimes it's abused by those who sanitise communication in particular the likes of the angling trust and followers, roskilly, goldsmith and others, you know who you are. gutless cowards who are secular and selfish and haven't got the bottle to speak in an open and transparent way.

    like you,i like facebook. helps to keep in contact with family a friends. i have a couple of golden rules though;

never post anything on facebook you would not say to their face. and only accept friends requests from people you know and have a common interest with. (like the cancer support groups i am in) even then you can edit what posts they see of yours and what post of theirs you can see.the biggest problem with the facebook haters is they dont know how to manage their accounts. B)

  5. i have a samsung galaxy tab.i read books via google books and the kindle app. i actually have two tablets. one a real cheapie but the kindle will download to all devices i use my log in on. so it downloads to the phone and two tablets. it will also tell me the latest bookmarks if i read on different devices

  6. most of the people who are against page 3 are just jumping on a band waggon and are against the sun rather than page 3. if they are really against page 3 they would target the daily star. semi naked bodies on every other page last time i looked.

  7. Tu-Go seems fine on Peggy's Android phone. It's my Windows 8 computer that has the problem.

One limitation I've found with BT Smart Talk is that you're limited to 1000 minutes and 150 calls per month then there's extra charges. You don't need BT Broadband but you do need a BT landline.

Has anyone else used these or similar products, either software or hardware? If so what did you think of them?

ive had bt smart talk for several months now. only used it a couple of times but when i did it worked ok. what it does is let you use your home call plan via your mobile phone. so if your like me and your home calls are free it costs nothing to use it. i have only used it when out and wanted to call an 0800 number and had no problems. my wifes phone is also registered to the service as well via our home line.

  8. until i was diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago and went off sick i had never claimed benefits in my life.

it was a nightmare getting the benefits we were entitled to, and without the help of the royal british legion and the CAB i think i would have given up. once we did get it though i was quite embarressed. the monetary amount is not great but it is definettly enough to live on if you dont drink and smoke.i cancelled the sky tv and now have freesat and freeview. we both needed new glasses last year and manged to get two pairs each, mine were vari-vocals wifes were bi-focals for under £90!!! i last paid £225 for mine when working. i said to the wife this a kick in the teeth for the working man. its all the other benefits as well you get because you are unemployed that really add up and make people decide not to return to work.

most people who get my type of cancer and become neck breathers never go back to work. i am now back at work part time and hope to increase my hours in the long run.(i inform the benefits agency every month what hours i am working)

  9. i live in a two bed bunglaow with my wife. due to health reasons we have to have seperate bedrooms. even though i got a letter from my consultant explaining this we still lost part of our benefit due to the "bedroom tax"

anyone who asks to be moved to a smaller property should have there full benefit reinstated until they get a new smaller property. if the authorty have no smaller properties then that is not the tenants fault.

luckily about 5 years ago cancer patients got free prescriptions.i get a minimum of 6 items every month from my gp, and then at least 10 items a month i have to order for my stoma care as i am a neck breather. i would never be able to afford them if i had to pay.

they dont like to give you more than 1 months supply at a time either :(

  10. As I might have mentioned I recently spent some time in a French hospital. I went in to get my blood sugar stabilised and to control my diabetes.

Whilst I was in I stayed in a very pleasant private room with ensuite bathroom etc although I have to say the food was no great improvement on what I've had elsewhere in hospital.

During the three days I was in I was not only seen and treated by the doctors involved with my diabetes but I also got to see an ophthalmic specialist who checked the retina in both eyes, a cardiac specialist who ran ECGs and other tests, a neurologist who has set up a series of appointments concerned with pain control of my diabetic neuropathy and an orthopaedic specialist who has arranged for me to attend a day hospital three days a week for a range of therapies on my spinal problems.

This is rather more than would have happened in any NHS hospital that I have been in and I wondered why they seemed so keen to treat my other problems. Then of course, it dawned on me, they were charging for it and the more treatment I had the more they could charge.

It might help to explain how treatment is paid for in France. In a public hospital such as this prices are set by the government. Generally speaking the patient pays and then is refunded by the government. They pay 70% of the cost back to you. For long or expensive hospital stays then they just pay the 70% direct to the hospital. As a diabetic I don't have to pay anything as I get all treatment free anyway. Most people will have a form of private medical insurance called a mutuelle or top up policy which pays the outstanding 30% so apart from your Social Security payments and your top-up insurance cost to you as the patient is nothing.

advantage to you as the patient is that the hospital/doctors are motivated and go out of their way to provide you with top-class treatment.

In the NHS, apart from your National Insurance contributions and of course an assortment of taxes treatment is free. There is no profit motive for the hospital/doctors to provide any more than the bare minimum they can get away with and to be honest this is very often exactly what they do.

There has been much concern recently about privatisation of the health service but is it necessarily such a bad thing?

The combination of private/public seems to work here and in comparison with the UK certainly seems to be just as cost-effective for the patient.

this time last year i was 5 days into a 45 day stay at an NHS hospital. other than 6 days in recovery and high dependancy i had my own room and en suit bathroom all the time i was in. probably saw 3 doctors a day minimum as well as physio's, dieticans and speech therapists every day after my operation.

i would not have gopt better tratment if i went private.

it is a post code lottery i think in the NHS. in cambridge we have a very well run hospital in my opinion.

  11. my grandad who's irish joined the army rather than go home as a few did. he said he was helped through his recruit training by the fact his intake was almost all irsh..........a complete trained platoon of irish soldiers had "deserted" as a platoon and joing the uk army.my grandad could only serve in the blue caps as he only had one eye. but he would rather do that than go running home to ireland.

had some great storys off him before he died of the places he had to guard etc. when we used to go and collect him from london where he lived to come stay with us at cambridge i had to vary the route home as we got the storys as we went past the landmarks..............everytime :bye2:. the kids used to **** themselves laughing and would even start just before we go to a landmark as they knew he would start. we were/are still proud of him though and wouldnt have it any other way :clap3:

glad your grandad got his pardon rob. rightly so as well. mine was living in the uk at the time so wasnt in the irish army.

  12. dont think anyone would pay £30 a pitch in east anglia. normally between £5 -£8 here. i used to do two a year just to clear out junk i had acumilated. always made my money plus a bit but then again i always charged a realistic buyme price.

http://www.fordhamcarbootsales.co.uk/ this is 3 miles away and every fortnight.

been for a look a couple of time already and i did wonder were i had to show my passport.......english was not the first language being spoken. there are the asian/arab jockeys from newmarket just down the road then all the east europeans who work at the veg packing plants just up the road.they have got a habit of just pushing past to get what they want even if your already looking.

its such a big bootsale that since my operation i cant actually manage to walk all the way round it. so i ignore at least the first 4 lanes which are full of the regular full time sellars. and if someone cant be bothered to put a price on anything i cant be bothered to ask and will walk past. i will negotiate but i want to know were i'm starting at not a figure that just comes out of the sellers head.

  13. i've never actually fished there colin. what i do remember though is as a kid being able to walk out what i thought was mles before the water got any depth, that and the beutiful white sand. i think my grandad used to fish from one of the harbours just down the coast and have some luck.
