  1. Yes dave there are but they are either stuffed full of tench anglers after them or carp anglers after the big carp that are there aswell.

I don't want to join a circus just for a pb. It doesn't mean anything to me. A tench of 6lbs plus from the fens is as good as a 10lb boilie fed fish from a Stillwater. Anglers are so driven by size and I think that's to do with modern carp fishing. I still think the water is important and if you enjoy being there.

The above pics were self take and that's the way I like it. Out there me and the wildlife. And being an old fens warrior I am sure you recognise it.

  2. Interesting topic but flawed.

Several members here have stated how they do not like commercial waters but are happy to visit them for the big roach and perch. I have many such waters near me and know, from match anglers reports, of perch too 4lbs in them.

I find it easy to resist the temptation to fish for them as I don't feel they are any more natural than the carp or other fish in the pond. They exist within a water that has artificially high levels of prey fish and generally no other predators. A recipe for fast growth rates and as they are not generally being fished for do very nicely on neglect.

They wouldn't be there if it wasn't an artificial man made environment.

    Unlike this

    image_zps0ef7fb67.jpg

At 2lb 2ozs I consider this as good as any commercial 3lb plus fish

espescially when it was caught from here

    image_zps51ff6311.jpg

    along with these

    image_zps616a7a3d.jpg

Suffolk Water Park is quite near me and a biggish water and specimen carp. It is not a stocked water and has big eels roach bream tench and carp. It is dayticket or several day/nights but no season ticket. They have smaller lakes within complex that are match type venues stocked accordingly but the big lake isn't. So this is a commercial because of the way you can gain access but is natural.

    Google it and see.

Incidentally I only have ever fished it for the roach.

Oh and forgot too mention this was last sunday and have many more similar catches to prove the point.

  3. Tubertini do fine wire hooks in sizes up to a 10. They might fit the bill.

series 18 go up to size 10 and series 2 up to 12.

The series 18 are my main feeder hook but will straighten with a chub or tench on.

The series 2 are finer still and I use for roach. I normally use small sizes as they are a bit week for bigger roach. When I am after bigger roach with bread when I want a light hook I will use the series 18.

These are all spade and maybe difficult to find but there is an irish company selling them on ebay and I have found them thoroughly reliable. What dales says is true but its sometimes better to allow hook to straighten and eject the carp quickly.I have done this a lot whilst polefishing for roach. It gets rid of carp quickly before it damages your swim too badly. I often straighten hook and reuse saving time although maybe if I was after a real biggy might not take the risk.

Tubertini also do some cracking reel line and hooklength material.

  4. The morning looks the best bet so I am going to get up very early and call it a day if/when the proper rain starts. Dawn on the 16th of June, at a pretty, clear, fast flowing stream with an Avon float and centrepin...heaven :)

or on ten mile bank river ouse with 2 feeder rods or a slider setup. A few miles short of Denver sluice.

  5. I just sorted out the trotting gear, the old pin needed a bit of a clean (last used in anger 3 seasons ago!) but is now sparkly and gt85'd, and I reacquainted myself with the lovely normark rod... Got a little tackle box of bits together... I think I'm ready :)

I've decided to only take the trotting gear and to just go where my fancy takes me, moving around different stretches and different rivers, and just having fun.

Well Anderoo I have tonight decided its off to ten mile bank probably Brandon creek. Don't expect too much as I think the deeper river sections will be a slow start but cannot avoid it. I thought I would leave them alone but the pull is just too much. May well have to give the broads a visit or two aswell.

Saturday night sleeping on bank for an early start.

  6. The Carp are spawning in the KAPS lakes at Snodland and we are having the annual argument as to whether we close the lakes or not!

Tony one of my local club forums asked the same question this morning. I replied that one lake that really only gets carp anglers on it might be a good idea. However I added as I am a bream tench roach perch pike angler in stillwaters should we also close them when they are spawning.

If so we are back to the old close season. I don't see why carp should get any more special treatment than other species.

Close the spawning area's only as not all fish of one species spawn at the same time. Allow angling elsewhere.

    John

  7. Steve the lakes around me are just kicking in for the carp to spawn. Layer lake at Colchester,a famous carp water, has just started as have several other waters. I am talking of bigger waters as small ponds etc and commercial type waters seem to buck the trend anyway.

The very big or deep venues are still not showing signs although some are such low density you never see them anyway. Alton reservoir (not oulton water often confused with) has only just had the bream spawning last week. It is 360 acres and up to 35ft deep.

Ardleigh res was a week before.

  8. Drinking loads of beer and playing snooker.

Sounds a whole lot more fun to me than getting covered in slime and smelling of fish.

Until I remember its trying to avoid an overdose of the aforementioned that I go fishing.

Hope we can have some more updates after june 16th

  9. Catch an endless list of monster fish.

Dales if I didn't know you better I would say that was boasting what with that huge list of fish caught following every post of yours.

Still you are famous here whereas I am more infamous. :spiteful:

  10. Yes you are right as a newbie I didn't remember your posts from the past.

I only joined in January 2000. My membership number is not displayed anymore but it was single figures.

Danubian Id rather have fun with a women of the same title than a catfish. That is unless the wife found out.

  11.

First i'd like to point out that my reply was neither sycophantic or any other form of arsecreeping...it was a **** take because of the saddo's who use a pole!

I don't fish mud puddles or any kind of commercial anymore i prefer nice big open waters like lakes, reservoirs and those big ponds where the water goes from one side to another...i think they're called rivers.

As for carp....nothing more than a nice live bait for a decent Esox or Moggie

    What reply was that then

A decent bait for esox maybe but all moggies as you call them or big pussys as some refer to them by should be removed from uk waters and sent back to spain or made into fishmeal. Why catfish have a big macho following I do not know why not just go and shark fish.

  12. I have fished with a pole next to reed beds for carp up to 10lbs and you can actually control them quicker than with a rod and line. With rod and line tactics by the time you know you have a fish on its going flat out towards reed bed or snag. With pole you see and react quicker and turn the fish before it hardly knows its hooked. It can also be an advantage pulling from above in controlling the fish albeit with a suitable pole setup.

I have also used a pole in heavy lilly pads in very shallow water for tench. Fishing into a hole in the pads and immediately getting tench on top and fighting on surface.Again the right pole setup is required.

Obviously my comment about not owning a rod was silly on this occasion but there are many out there that either only have a pole or once using a pole never use a rod again. My apologies for that.

Oh and Webbo well done for replying in a sensible and refrained way after being criticised. Your replies have made a few see things in a slightly different way.

  13. Dave H hope you read this as others have said "you can learn a lot from match anglers".

I think Dave these club type and commercial water anglers are what I was reffering too when I said short answer no.

Anderoo at least what they are destroying are easily bought again off the peg from your local fish supplier. What we and others generally fish for are a little different. I wouldn't like to decry what they are doing as the sport of fishing really does need allsorts to keep up the dwindling number of anglers.

  14. I often see eastern Europeans in make shift bivvys with no groundsheets getting drunk laying on the bank amongst sheep and think to myself Lymes desease.

the things you see on the fens these days.

Oh and its not meant to be racist and I am not making it up and I do mean to go and warn them of the dangers but they generally arrive after dark and are normally gone just before daybreak.

I have tried to chat too the, spend the whole weekend crew, of which we have a few but even asking for licences at 11am on a Saturday when they are blind drunk is hard enough. Might have to start breeding ticks.

  15. Davedave you can see why casters are quite expensive when shop bought.

I have a local shop that turns his own and they are very good but to do it takes time.

I like mine very light coloured you then have a better chance before they start floating. Keep them in water on the bank.

  16. "Maggots out the vending machines", that's a new one on me.

Thanks for the replies. Never having been to Norfolk all help is welcome.

Will be having a sun sea and sand with no fishing rods family holiday so don't think the odd none fishing member will mind a bit of fishing on this trip.

Even if its not a great place for big fish, putting my feet up on the back of the boat with a glass in one hand and a fishing rod in the other sounds like it should be fun.

    Cheers

    Brian.

    Brian it sounds ideal

Often anglers get swept away with catching bigger and bigger fish and forget its about a lot more than that.

    Enjoy

  17. I am undecided about the new river season, to be honest I don't like much of my local river Lea and the bit I do like is £70 a season. I have fished it for the last 3 seasons and am unsure do I want to continue or move on. I love fishing for river Bream and Perch on it but I struggled with my Pike fishing over the winter. I will still be fishing Pits and Lakes well in to the start of the river season, so I can put off the decision for a while.

I guess how excited about the start of the river season depends on what sort of quality of waters you have nearby. I don't really like traveling long distances to fish rivers and I don't have an abundance of choice in my part of the world.

Dales do you live north London?.

If so my area is not very far. Nearer than the fens and winter fishing for pike Is pretty good with chub also.

I still think a couple of hours travelling for fish is better than local blanking with a short drive home. The eastern Europeans agree also as most caught illegally fishing on the fens come from north London. And before the politically correct police want to arrest me all I said is they were illegally fishing I.E. have no licence. (the rest I will keep a secret for now)

  18. Hi there,

I am not sure if this will be a little but too far for you but how about a Hampshire chalk stream?

Like you, my fishing has to be in a natural environment. I am a keen specimen angler and have always had 'a thing' about large Roach.

Have a look at this fishery: http://www.timsburyfishing.co.uk/coarse.html

It is a beautiful stretch of the River Test with some beautiful fish. It is not easy but there are very good coarse fish to be had outside of the game season.

There are huge Grayling and Roach. My personal best Roach of 2lb 9oz came from here although I know that they go over 3lb!! Some big Pike too if that interests you.

It is a day ticket water. Not cheap but worth every penny in my opinion.

The bailiff / owner is a very pleasant man and worth talking to for his local knowledge.

I hope that it 'suits the bill'

    River Rover

Thanks river rover sounds very interesting and what a cracking river roach.

    Will investigate it further.

Pushing the distance a bit is not really an issue espescially to have 2lb plus roach crawling up my rods. LOL

  19. I am rapidly going off proper night fishing, but do like being somewhere and getting up at dawn to fish the days. If I could do that, I think I'd quickly find myself back in the fens on a regular basis...

Being there at last light to see fish activity and first light is why I started night fishing. Getting to a water for the crack of dawn when its 4am is so stressfull. Getting up in the middle of the night driving there getting your gear around the bank and setting up all in a rush as the light comes up and you are missing out on good fishing time.

Its so much easier to be there wake up and cast the rods out. Several local venues I fish I can be in the carpark and already baited up swim previous night. Even quite late in evening so I can be sure no one else see's me or drops in there.

I do this a lot on the fens. I know of several spots I can sleep undisturbed knowing all my gear is safely inside.

Some waters I want to fish are days only no night fishing. I can sleep close by and be there in minutes.

Dales saw me in my disco on the fens a couple of years ago. Because it has all mod cons as does my van you can walk back and cook proper food if you wish. I have a caravan chemical loo in it. I have a bucket and caravan water pump to run a shower head also for washing.

As you can probably tell I love it for weekends

  20. John i am a LAA member and fish there bits so if you ever fancy it give me a shout and we can meet up ,Close enough for me to prebait a few bits

I remeber a few years ago writing about the LAA stretches and you fishing them. What sections are good for me to look at. Is access good to them. Some LAA fisheries are so poorly utilised that they are overgrown. Their website descriptions are repeated year in for ever so do not always bear any resemblance to current conditions.

Thanks for the offer may well take you up on it.

  21. According to Google Maps, Sudbury is 125 miles (or 2hrs 15mins) from Oxford - so a fair distance, and has the old problem of London being in the way. But it's a 'do-able' distance if you have the drive (excuse the pun) for the fishing at the other end. If you do decide to explore the Thames and/or its fine tributaries, I'd be very happy to show you around. Almost all the water is pretty much unfished.

Buckingham is a little over 100 miles, and the upper Ouse is a fascinating venue. I've spent a fair amount of time there in the past and only really scratcched the surface. I will be returning soon once the Thames fever starts to subside a little, as I have unfinished (and also unstarted!) business.

(Both waters, if you believe the hype, have been 'decimated'. What this means in practice is that they are not necessarily easy, but nice and quiet...)

If you want to try something really different, do some lure fishing on the midland reservoirs in the autumn/early winter for zander. A totally new experience and electric fishing. From you, Rutland is just over 100 miles, Grafham 70.

Wingham is the only long-distance fishing I do. It's 145 miles each way, and the only route is round the M25, so it is not a pleasant journey to do regularly. The more I do the long drive the more I dislike it (in previous years when the bream fever was at its peak I was going every other week from April to July, then once a month til October), but when you're really into something, it's just an extra thing to put up with. I'm gradually doing less and less of the long distance fishing and spending more time on local waters, but I think these things go in cycles.

    Thankyou anderoo

I may well call on you for assistance locally to you.

This may be a passing fad of mine but think not.

The travelling is not so bad cross country to oxford area and I would stay for 2 nights aswell so plenty of time to fish and relax and explore. I have a peugeout expert van that is converted with a carp bed and all necessary mod cons to last a weekend. Theres plenty of room for all my tackle and to sleep comfortaby.

I was doing similar with a discovery commercial ,which I still have and will use winter time, but the van has a bit more room and more economical. I think this is also what got me thinking about utilising the vehicle for day fishing and different area's. I hide away and sleep wherever I feel safe.

I have done, and will do a lot more, bivvied up fishing over last few years. I do this all winter so there is plenty of time this summer to have a few trips around too different rivers.

    Thanks

    John
