Winter has set in with the first cold snap of the season in East Central Florida, frost on my yard is a sure sign, water temperatures reaching down into the 50’s begins the true winter pattern. Fish be come less scattered and more concentrated, some in the deeper holes and channels, some on the flats when the sun shines and warms the shallow water. Searching skinny water for Redfish and Seatrout is a winter favorite here at Mosquito Lagoon, the holes, sloughs and channels can hold Black drum, Sheepshead, Whiting, and more. If it doesn’t get too cold, the Snook will continue to feed also on drop offs and close to structure in the back country. Clearer water means lighter stealthy rigs to hide it from the target fish. A few days ago Jeff from Kentucky out with me on a nice size Black Drum caught off the bottom of a deep cold water hole ……………. We can at any time catch surprise fish in the back waters, at times can be Sharks, uncommon species of Snapper, we’ve even caught a few Bonefish on my boat in the last few years, one surprise species that we’ve caught quite a few of now days are Permit, normally a tropical species now being caught here and there up here closer to north Florida, here I’m modeling one caught recently by a client ………….. Long awaited cooler weather has come to East Central Florida with the arrival of November, water temps finally lower after a long summer, the fall migration of fish has been moving through the area as they work their way south, schools of Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and Bluefish, attacking the migratory finger mullet on the surface with white water strikes showing the way to sight casting hook ups with lures or bait and drag pulling bent rods. Water levels also beginning to drop after flood levels of late summer following much rainfall we have had this year. All the different species of our resident inshore saltwater fish are caught here in the north Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River at New Smyrna Beach, including Seatrout, Snook, Redfish, Sheepshead and more. Black Drum are a staple species in the holes, back creeks and channels, here is Noah from Orlando out with me on a recent trip which landed many different fish including a few good Drum ………………. Fall 2020 is just around the corner after a long Florida summer, starting to see to first early signs of autumn on the coastal saltwater intracoastal waterway, bait fish schools arriving from the north with schooling Jack Crevalle surface attacking with white water sight fishing action. Temperatures, air or water won’t start to drop for a few weeks yet as early fall pattern is still a warm one, end of summer melds together with early fall, other changes include the water and wading bird migration begins as well as other inshore saltwater schooling game fish, including Bluefish, Pompano, Ladyfish, and Tarpon. Fall is also spawning season for the big Redfish at our nearby Ponce deLeon Inlet after spending the summer prowling the deeper channel areas of the intracoastal Indian River here at New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater. Jacques of Edgewater out with me recently caught one of those big ICW Reds, a 42” fish, after a quick picture and release she swam off strong ……………. Summer of 2020 continues with a fair number of charters, not the usual busy vacation season as many are suspending vacations this year, some visitors coming to the area as well as locals doing fishing trips. Fishing remains normal this summer even though the world is anything but normal this year. Lots of variety catching on my backwater lagoon trips, beautiful mornings, calm conditions, light coolness in the air before the afternoon heat comes. Big numbers of Mangrove Snapper and Whiting this summer, a few Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Pompano and always some surprise catches. With the right tide and conditions bull Redfish are along the intracoastal waterway channel through the area during summer, George from Chicago got to experience just such a moment, hooking up and landing this jumbo 48” Redfish ………………. Normal size Reds are also always a lagoon target fish, taking lures or live bait on drop offs, flats, and near oyster bars, long time client Joe from Tampa caught a beautiful multi spot Redfish in a backcountry creek …………. Spotted Seatrout are a year round catch here in the Mosquito Lagoon Backcountry, at times lots of school size fish as well as larger adult Trout commonly called Specks, young Lauren from Orlando caught this beauty out with me on a recent Lagoon trip ………….. Black Drum also a regular catch in the backwaters here, most are juveniles from 1 to 5 lbs. Summer 2020 is here with beautiful calm mornings, the waters surface alive with baitfish in the early morning, game fish can also be present, striking the bait from below, making for great sight catching opportunities. Open water surface activity with smaller fish can be Seatrout, Jack Crevalle or Ladyfish, larger fish at times on the surface can be Tarpon or bull Redfish. The smaller game fish will take lures, live shrimp and little bait fish, best baits for large surface fish are blue crabs or bigger bait fish. Targeting the variety of different back waters species where you never know what you’ll catch next, I use light tackle with natural baits and small sub surface lures, casting to underwater drop offs, points, creek mouths, and submerged creek beds, most trips catching 10 or more different species. Spotted Seatrout are one of the usual Lagoon backcountry catches, long time repeat client Steve from Tennessee with a nice Speck on a recent trip ………… Another regular guest along with his dad, young Grant from Kentucky with a nice Snook caught off the edge of an oyster bar with little Mangrove Trees growing on the shells …………… Nick from Ft Lauderdale and his uncle were here staying at a local B and B at New Smyrna on the intracoastal waterway, I picked them up at the B and B’s dock and off we went into the backcountry, catching a bunch of different species along with a nice Snook for Nick …………. We continue to social distance here in East Central Florida, very few visitors coming to town, so in turn very few charters the last several weeks. Still making my monthly fishing report with information from my last several charters before the shut down began. In spring the first of the migratory species make their way north along the east coast of Florida after spending the winter further south, schooling inshore coastal migrating fish include Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, they travel in schools following the temperature increase, so the exact timing is different each year. One of the most exciting of the sub tropical species which come north in spring are Tarpon, occasional full grown Silver Kings from 50 to 100 lbs., but most of the intracoastal fish are younger in the 10 to 30 lb. Range. Denton and friends from Eustis, FL were out with me catching many different backcountry species when this 38” Tarpon crashed the party and was landed after a good fight …………... On another recent trip Rudy was throwing an artificial soft plastic and caught a fun size Snook with a few jumps during the battle …………… Ashley from Minnesota caught a nice Pompano along with Jack Crevalle and other fish species on a mixed bag variety trip in the back waters ……………. One of the spring fish that can come out of the ocean into the intracoastal waterway on their way north are Spanish Mackerel like this toothy fish caught by Paxton from Apopka FL under the big bridge in New Smyrna Beach on the first cast this morning …………….. Spring 2020 has arrived to East Central Florida fishing waters, air temps in the 80’s, water temps up to the 70’s, more baitfish schools appearing on the waters surface with returning game fish like Jack Crevalle, Bluefish and Ladyfish striking the top water bait in early morning. Spring run shrimp are also coming through with the tide, down the intracoastal channel as well as the in the backcountry creeks and back channels. Seatrout, Redfish and Snook getting more active with warming water, ready to ambush bait fish, shrimp and artificial lures in the back waters. Black Drum are spreading through the back water holes and channels, small baby ones as well as fun catching sizes up to about 5 lbs like this one Jim from New Jersey caught with me recently …………… Al from The Villages, Florida was out with me recently along with a few friends visiting this winter from up north, this fun size Shark gave him a great light tackle battle …………… Snook are always a welcome catch, here in the saltwater estuary which is a nursery of all the different species of coastal fish we have lots of baby Snook hiding in the cover of Mangrove roots and dock pilings, young Luca from Boston got a nice size linesider with me …………... Florida Pompano have become more of a regular catch on this part of the Atlantic east coast in the intracoastal waterway the last few years, including many good size ones up to about 18”, Rob from St. Louis with a nice pomp ………………. Normal Redfish have 1 spot on each side of the tail, but some individual Reds have extra spots like this small pretty one caught and released by my long time regular client Mike from Mt. Dora, FL………… Jack Crevalle are a regular catch here in Florida’s coastal waters, sight fishing them is great fun as they regularly feed on surface bait fish and shrimp with white water strikes to cast to for a fast hook up, young Jackson from Daytona Beach caught this one from a small school on a surface attack ……….. Water temperatures have ranged from the mid 50’s to the upper 60’s as we have had a chilly week then a warm week through the winter, colder water schools up the fish while mild temps spread out the fish. Winter fish like Sheepshead and Bluefish are usually every trip catches here in the backcountry, and year around fish also, Redfish, Snook, Seatrout, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, and more. During the warmer weeks we see signs of early spring, tiny schools of tiny newly hatched fish hiding around the Mangrove roots, and a few spring fish biting like Spanish Mackerel, Jacks and Ladyfish. Water level is down low as is normal by late winter with prevailing north and west winds after the cold fronts and the dry season we are in now. A good recent trip with lots of variety and repeat clients from Indiana had a few good Trout, Black Drum and the best Redfish caught by Courtney …………… Central Florida local Rey from Sanford had a fun catching trip including a nice size Snook caught on artificial …………………. Winter 2020 is here with chilly water, regular “Florida” cold fronts coming through followed by north and west winds lowering our water levels and making the water nice and clear. East Central Florida winter conditions range from mild to chilly, during mild periods fish are more spread out through the backcountry along drop offs, in channels and in holes, a colder period after a strong cold front concentrates the fish more in a tighter schooling pattern. A couple cold water fish we are catching in winter are Bluefish and Sheepshead in addition to all the resident species which we catch year round, including Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper and more. Artificial lures become a better bet with clear water, the fish in the back channels can see it from a longer distance making lures more effective than in our cloudy water of summer. I even get to catch a fish every now and then, like this pretty Spotted Seatrout I got on a soft plastic lure during one of those chilly Florida winter mornings …………… Florida Pompano are a less common member of the Atlantic Jack family which happen to be very good eating as well as super hard fighters as are all Jacks, young Matthew from Ohio with a beauty he caught with me recently …………… Black Drum are a year around staple fish here in the back waters, most are school size ranging from 1 to 5 lbs. November is the transition month leaving our short fall behind us moving towards a Florida winter fishing pattern, however it has been a mild autumn so far with water temperatures still pretty warm, extending fall fishing. Baitfish schools still in the area, schools of migratory inshore gamefish Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish still prowling the backwaters, most resident fish are still in the warmer water scattered pattern. This is a good time of year for better Mangrove Snapper in the intracoastal waterway after they have grown all year with lots of summer food and getting bigger before heading off shore into the ocean. As the water temperatures start to drop soon the Seatrout, Redfish, Black Drum and Snook will begin to school up together into their winter schools in holes, sloughs, and on the flats on sunny chilly days. Fall has been the Redfish spawning time in deeper water along the channel, some also come into the backwaters as Bill from Orlando found with me landing a big oversize Redfish ………………… Jack Crevalle are one of our dependable fun hard pulling inshore game fish, in the fall, schools of Jacks are widespread in the backwaters, when conditions are right, white water striking gives away their location as they attack bait fish, many of these are 3 to 5 lb fish, great fun for sight casting and fun fights, Austin and friends from California caught some of those 5 pounders ………… Longtime regular clients from Iowa out again on their fall charter caught many different species as usual, including Seatrout, Jacks, Ladyfish, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting and others, Bonnie had the biggest of the morning a fun Shovelnose Shark on light tackle ……………. Autumn 2019 has arrived, we’ve had plenty of east winds off the ocean, cooling us down just a little bit , as early fall is still fairly warm here in East Central Florida, the east winds raise water levels in the Intracoastal Waterway and saltwater Mosquito Lagoon by pushing more ocean water inside the near by Ponce De Leon Inlet and filling the estuary with clean seawater, also beginning the process of clearing the water clarity after the usual cloudy water of summer. Schooling inshore game fish as coming through the region as well as the fall migration of baitfish, surface striking Jack Crevalle, Bluefish and Ladyfish are great fun for sight fishing, casting bait or lures right into the white water surface action can bring instant hook ups and great rod bending with drag pulling. Also the usual Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting, and others are abundant here in the backwaters, Snook, Black Drum and Redfish and others are also always a possibility. Family friendly trips with children are one of my regular types of charters, is great fun putting everyone on catching fish, but kids catching a good one is always a treat. One of the very favorite catches for novice fishers on a back country charter is a Shark, young Sadie from Tennessee out with her family on a recent trip with me got a fun little Shovelnose Shark that came aboard for a quick picture before release……………… First cast of the trip for young Presley from New Jersey had her pulling on a fun Jack Crevalle setting a great tone for the morning charter …………….. Florida Pompano have been a regular catch in the backwaters here in my area the last few years, they are great fighters being a member of the Jack family, John from Ohio out with a group of very long time regular clients with a nice one ……………. I had a fun time out on a scouting trip with my friend casting artificial soft plastic lures on the edge of the intracoastal channel first thing in the morning, my first strike was a pretty nice Snook for a good photo and release ……………….. A few minutes later my lure got bit again by a nice Spotted Seatrout which also got his photo taken before I set him free………………. You never know when a surprise fish will come to the boat with my usual mixed bag variety back waters fishing style, this one a little Bonefish caught by Joe from Louisiana……………... School is starting, summer vacation season is over, the waters are less crowed with fewer boats and fishermen as fall is approaching, the annual mullet run will be starting soon with migrating bait fish schools moving south down the coast and in the intracoastal waterway with schooling game fish to follow. But for now late summer patterns continue as cooler temperatures are still a couple months away here in Florida. Summer variety catching is still the usual in the backwaters here at Mosquito Lagoon and New Smyrna Beach, many different species on every trip, including good numbers of Speckled Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting, Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish, also still biting a few along the way are Snook, Black Drum, Redfish and Pompano, and surprise catches of more unusual fish for this area like small size Permit, Bonefish, and Mutton Snapper. Some fish even have a natural freak anomaly, like this nice size Snook, caught and released by Hamp from Georgia, a split, double lateral line on the front end of the line, this is the first Snook I’ve ever seen with this ……………... Spotted Seatrout are an every trip, year round fish here in my area of the backcountry, many schooling size fish are widespread through the area, and better size specks are also a regular catch, longtime client Joe from Tampa with one of the nice Trout from a recent live bait trip, this “over the slot” fish was released ……………… I do trips all the time with families and young kids along, I bring push button Zebco outfits for the younger kids to make it easier for them to cast and fish, young Miles hooked up this nice Snook on his Zebco rod, a great battle with the fish pulling drag over and over and jumping many times, then a great Photo and Release ……………. Repeat husband and wife clients from Canada were out with me again on a good Seatrout trip, Nathalie with her best Trout of the morning ………………… ……..and Martin hooked up a 5 lb Jack Crevalle sight fishing with an artificial lure out of a school of surface striking jacks chasing mullet …………….. Black Drum are also a year round fish here in the Lagoon, Jordan with a nice one …………… Speaking of unusual fish for this area, all through this year I’ve had several young Permit caught on the boat, they are usually more southern Florida fish so not an expected catch her, Joe had a great light tackle battle with this little Permit …………….. The summer of 2019 is going great with lots of fun fishing trips, we catch lots of different species of fish on my backcountry variety mixed bag trips, the highlight fish are Seatrout, Snook, Black Drum and Redfish, but other good fish we catch more numbers of include Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Whiting, Pompano, and always some surprise catches too, this year some of the unexpected fish we have caught include Permit, Bonefish, Sharks, Scorpion Fish, Mutton Snapper, Horse Eye Jacks, and Cutlass Fish. Summer can have high species variety as some of the more sub tropical Florida species move a little further north during the warm time of year. Water temperature up to the 80’s F as summer is in full swing, scattered fish is the warm water normal pattern with less schooling than in cooler water, however some areas will have more fish than others in locations and holes more favorable to the fish at any given moment with presence of bait ( food ), tidal flows, water levels or temperature. Open water fun inshore game fish like Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish are usual summer rod benders, other fish are more structure oriented, in the back waters staying near drop offs, creek mouths, points, downed mangrove branches, oyster bars, and holes, like Seatrout, Snook, Mangrove Snapper, Redfish, and Black Drum. Summer vacation season has lots of charter trips with families and kids, which are always lots of fun, making memories for them to remember for years to come, catching fish, seeing our Bottlenose Dolphins and Manatees up close and personal here in the Backcountry at New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon on the Indian River. Early summer fishing patterns have arrived here at East Central Florida in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon backcountry now as of May 2019, water temperatures have risen into the upper 70’s F, more numbers of bait fish schools arriving, game fish becoming more widespread and less concentrated as normal for summer, more variety of species being caught on my trips as the subtropical warmer water types moving back north for the rest of the year after their wintering down south. These fun rod bending inshore game fish include Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish which join our local residential fish like Spotted Seatrout, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting and also a few Redfish and Snook make my mixed bag variety trips interesting with all the different species. Recent trip with repeat clients from Indianapolis included lots of the usual fish, Candy had the best one a nice Black Drum………………. More repeat clients from Buffalo, NY who were here on their annual New Smyrna Beach vacation, out with me again had a fun trip, young John caught a nice Seatrout…………….. March has been stubbornly cool by central Florida standards with spring cold fronts coming through each week keeping our water clear and cool, big schools of Jack Crevalle have started to arrive in our waters making for fun fast easy rod bending. One last month of the spring pattern for the water and fishing style as we transition towards the early summer next month with warmer water and more summer fish species being caught. Summer patterns include more surface activity with fish eating and striking bait fish and shrimp on top in the mornings as well as getting out early again for first thing in the morning catching after the winter of later starts for better action. We are catching lots of different species on most trips, from the usual inshore game fish Seatrout, Black Drum, Bluefish, Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish, along with an occasional Redfish or Snook, also plenty of Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead, Whiting, even a few Pompano, all these are great fun on my light spin tackle outfits. Tom from Michigan out on one of the recent cooler mornings catching a bunch of the usual species also caught and released a fun size Redfish………………. ………..and also landing an unusual fish for these parts being a small Permit, I have had several of these usually warm water tropical fish caught here during this winter and early spring…………….. Long time snowbirds from Indiana who have wintered in this area for 30 years found me for a fun backcountry trip, Mary had bragging rights with a good Redfish …………… ………...and George got a photo size Jack Crevalle, we released all the fish on the trip to grow up and hopefully spawn for more fish for next time……………. Spring 2019 has arrived to the waters of the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon here at New Smyrna Beach, water temperatures are up to the 70’s F in the intracoastal waterway and the mid 60’s in the ocean surf line, bait fish are returning the lagoon coming up from the south as the temps rise, coastal migratory game fish also starting to be caught, including Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Pompano, and Ladyfish, our local resident fish Seatrout, Redfish, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper are also returning to their normal locations after spending the winter hiding in the cold water spots. The spring shrimp run is starting with lots of fish focusing on one of their favorite foods the local shrimp. Water is still clear here in the north Lagoon and backcountry so artificial lures and flies are working with good visibility for the fish to see the “fake” baits. Kris from Maine was out with the family recently with me in the backcountry catching many different species on shrimp, dad got to catch a nice Redfish which we released to grow up and become a larger spawning fish some day………………. ………….son Liam got to catch and release a good Black Drum at another back waters fishing hole……………. Ken from Chicago caught a bunch of fish on his trip with a couple good Redfish including this cool 9 spot fish on an artificial soft plastic lure………... Repeat client Mike from Mt. I’m hoping for an early spring here on the Indian River Backcountry and Mosquito Lagoon at New Smyrna Beach, water temperatures still chilly around 60’ F but warm daytime temps up to 80’ as of now in late February 2019 should raise the water temps soon and bring on spring fishing patterns a little early this year. I’m already seeing schools of Glass Minnow baitfish which is one of the first signs of spring in the Intracoastal Waterway, Mullet, Pilchards, and Sardines should soon follow along with our migratory game fish Bluefish, Pompano, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish which should arrive in big schools soon on their northward spring time path making for lots of fun fast action from all these hard pulling surface action fish. Our local resident fish will also become more active as water temps climb, Seatrout, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Redfish, Snook, Mangrove Snapper and more with all the big variety of fish species here in our inshore saltwater lagoon system. It has been a “Florida winter” so far as of early 2019, plenty of chilly nights in the 40’s with a few down to the upper 30’s, throw in several days from 75’ to 80’ and it’s a nice cool to mild winter pattern. Water temperatures have ranged from mid 50’s after the chilly spells and up to the mid 60’s after a few warmer days. Clear water is the normal in winter, more clear when cold, cloudy up just a little with warmer temps, schooling fish is the winter pattern, Seatrout schools are common along the drop offs and sloughs in the backcountry and lagoon, a paddle tail jig or live shrimp are a sure thing hook up on the schooling trout. Find the right spot in winter and the fish are bunched up together, not unusual to catch Trout, Reds, and Snook in the same spot, Black Drum and Sheepshead can be there too. On a sunny day schooling Redfish go shallow for a little sun warmed water, slow and stealthy is the way to get close enough for a cast to reach them with a live shrimp or small soft plastic lure, Seatrout can be right in there with the Reds on a winter flat, here I am with a nice winter Seatrout off a 2 feet deep flat with an artificial lure…………………… Young Adam from Ohio caught a few Black Drum on a mixed bag variety trip with lots of other species caught also…………………… Lots of Pompano have been in the waters here in the intracoastal waterway as well as their usual haunts of the ocean surf line, Matt from North Carolina with a nice one he caught out with me recently………………. Black Drum are one of our main target fish in the backcountry and usually catch a few or more most trips among the variety of all the different species we regularly catch, Dan from California with another average size Drum………………. Enjoying the start of winter now December 2018, water has cleared with the dropping temperatures which are in the low 60’s F on the channels and as low as the mid 50’s F on the flats on cold mornings. Cold water fish like Sheepshead and Bluefish are starting to come to the boat, our year round fish still biting too, Seatrout are schooling in the holes and channels, catching them on shrimp and deep running artificial lures, Redfish are getting into winter schools, on the flats they come during the day for sunshine to warm them, more on the edges and drop offs on cloudy days, Snook still bite too in chilly water, the smaller ones also school up on drop offs in winter, Black Drum are widespread through the backcountry in holes and deeper channels edges. Was a great late fall season before the chill arrived recently, sending many sub tropical species south for the winter, we had lots of schooling Jack Crevalle with surface attack action, always have the chance of surprise big fish hookups in the backcountry, first time client Chris from Orlando had one of these encounters with me in the back waters and an epic battle and CPR, catch, photo, release on a 42” Redfish, estimated 25 plus lbs in weight………………. Had the pleasure of multiple trips recently with Joe from Seattle and many of his family and friends who were here also during their Florida stay, on their trips we caught lots of all the usual variety of fish, on one of the trips, young Kaylee was along and had the good luck on many fish, one of the favorites being a fun size Shovelnose Hammerhead Shark which came aboard for a quick photo before release…………… ……….Kaylee also with one of the Trout from this trip………………. Lots of my charters happen when locals have family visit from out of town, such the case which brought Fred from Ormond Beach and his crew catching a “slam” with Trout, Redfish and Snook along with others of the mixed bag of species…………….. Longtime regular Bonnie and her husband from Iowa were out again this fall on a fun trip with lots of fish including a few good Black Drum……………….. Winter is Sheepshead time, in cold water we catch them every trip out, usually good numbers of smaller ones, but there are always a few bigger ones lurking in the back waters, Brian with a good one……………. We have had our first cool fronts of the season lowering the water temperatures to the low 70’s, north winds play a big part in the water temps dropping early in the season as cooler water from further north is pushed down Florida's coast. Fishing patterns change as the water gets colder, less baitfish in the water as most goes south for the winter, local Lagoon game fish begin to school up, including Redfish, Trout and Black Drum, some of these schools we find in shallow water on sunny days as the skinny water warms a little, others are bunched up in holes and off the edge of drop offs and channels. Winter fish Sheepshead and Bluefish become more numerous as the water gets colder giving us some different fish to catch in the cool months. The subtropical inshore game fish Tarpon, Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish have mostly already moved south, still catching a few but noticeably less the last couple weeks, when we have had big schools of Jacks about 5 lbs surface striking with white water crashes on baitfish making for great sight fishing cast lures or bait and instant hook ups. A few large Redfish make their way in to Lagoon Backcountry after spawning at the inlet near the ocean in the fall, Brian from California caught one with me last week at 38” a great battle on my fun light tackle used in the back waters…………….. We are already getting east breezes off the ocean early in Autumn 2018, this starts the process of clearing the water in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon Backcountry after a long Florida summer with the usual cloudy warm water. Easterly winds push in more clear ocean water at nearby Ponce Inlet on each incoming tide which filters through the intracoastal waterway resulting in clearing water through the fall. The fall mullet and baitfish run is going strong this year with a flood of finger mullet schools moving south through the area with game fish in tow feeding on the bait fish, schools of good size Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish and Spanish Mackerel to name some, also Tarpon of varying sizes from 10 to 20 lb. teenagers up to 50 plus lb. adults are also in with the baitfish schools. The Jacks and Blues frequently are surface attacking mullet in the morning as they push mullet up to the surface and strike in white water splashes making for great sight catching, a bait or lure cast in the action is usually a sure thing, multiple hook ups are common with these schooling Jack attacks, Wayne from Ohio caught some this way, lots of fun on light tackle………………….. Black Drum have been a regular catch here all year in the backcountry, catching them on shrimp, sizes from pretty little ones of 1 lb. up to nice drag pulling 5 lb. fish which are a good battle on my light tackle outfits, Timothy from Georgia with a nice one……………….. Seatrout are also a year round, almost every trip target species, they school up more in the cool months and are more scattered in the warm months, we catch smaller school size specks on shrimp and small lures, larger ones usually on live bait fish and larger lures, Stephanie from Orlando with a nice Mosquito Lagoon Trout…………. Summer 2018 is winding down with autumn right around the corner, the fall mullet and baitfish run begins in late August, inshore game fish begin to follow the bait down the coast as the run moves south, swimming towards south Florida where many of these fish spend the winter. All this action is in our neighborhood during September, October, and November, schools of migratory game fish like Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, oversize Ladyfish, and Pompano join our year round resident fish Redfish, Seatrout, Snook, Mangrove Snapper, Black Drum, Sharks, and more, fattening up for winter eating the mullet, other baitfish and shrimp. As the air and water temperatures begin to drop in the fall, it’s a pleasure being out on the water after our very long Florida summer, in the Indian River backcountry and Mosquito Lagoon, the catching action is steady with all the different species of fish, schools of finger size mullet frequent the waters surface as they migrate south with game fish busting them with white water strikes, making for fun and easy sight fishing casting into the action with usually fast hookups. Backcountry variety mixed bag fishing usually lands many different species on each trip, sometimes some of all the available fish types that are in the area, and you never know when notable catch will bend our rods, new client Scott and his son from Maryland were out with me recently and Scott had the big hook up on light tackle and battled and CPR ( catch - photo – released ) this 32” Snook ……………………. Fall is spawning Redfish time at our local Ponce de Leon Inlet, bull Redfish up to 45” and 35 lbs gather in the inlet area and a few can be caught on blue crabs and live bait fish, we catch smaller size Redfish on the flats at Mosquito Lagoon in the fall also, this is fun challenging shallow water sight fishing with light tackle, also usually catching Seatrout on the flats and drop off edges, long time regular clients from Virginia out this summer caught a bunch of nice Trout and Miranda had the big fish with a skinny water 28” Redfish…………………… Never know when a back water Shark will bite one of our baits and they always put up a great fight on light tackle, Mike from Orlando with a 40” plus Shovelnose Hammerhead………………….. Summer 2018 continues to be productive and fun fishing and catching in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon backcountry here at the New Smyrna Beach Florida area, from the intracoastal backwaters with it’s maze of channels, creeks and islands to the flats on the south end of my area. As late summer is creeping in, the larger “bull” Redfish begin to gather at times in the ICW channel and near close by Ponce Inlet, by fall and the spawn the big Reds group up around the inlet area. On the right tide and location, a few can be caught as they are looking for baitfish and drifting blue crabs on the surface, most of the fish are 20 to 30 lbs. which is about 38” to 45”. On a recent “right” morning, referred new clients Rick and sons from Georgia were treated to a couple big fish on our trip which also included some mixed bag action with Seatrout, Snapper, Jacks Crevalle, Ladyfish and more. Timothy landed a 44” Redfish on a live blue crab, this is a 30lb. fish ……………… …………..brother Samuel was next up with this 38” Red which also bit a crab………………….. Sight fishing the flats at Mosquito Lagoon is always a fun but challenging trip, Matt from Philadelphia had it on his bucket list and got to experience our encounter with several tailing Redfish in very shallow water at sunrise and was able to connect with this 27” Red……………….. Sharks are always the star of the show for freshwater fishermen who only fish the salt on special occasions, Josh from Tennessee had an epic battle on one of my light tackle spinning rods and landed this 40” Shovelnose Hammerhead for a quick photo before release……………….. It has been a good year for Black Drum here in my back water area with catches on many of my trips through all of 2018, new local clients Don and Virgil had a double hookup and landing of this pair of drum …………… Young Katie from Georgia caught a nice Redfish while out with her family on a mixed bag variety trip also catching all the different species along the way …………………… Kyle from North Carolina came on a trip with a bunch of buddies visiting Orlando, several Black Drum caught in addition to the usual bunch of different types of fish too ………………….. We are having a fun and busy summer of 2018 so far, wide variety of fish catching here in the Indian River and north Mosquito Lagoon backcountry. Landing Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and always some surprise catches on many trips, like Sharks, Pompano, Tarpon, and more. Usually catching 10 to 15 or more different species on most backcountry mixed bag trips. The back water area is full of life in the summer months, with surface striking fish in the morning hitting baitfish and shrimp, white water attacks making for fun sight fishing and catching. Loads of baitfish schools everywhere including mullet, pilchards, and menhaden are a summer fixture of food for game fish, dolphins, and birds. Water temperatures have reached the normal lower 80’ F levels, so careful handling of CPR ( catch photo release ) fish is needed as higher water temps means lower oxygen levels. Lots of teenage size “rolling” Tarpon are a frequent sight in our back waters, they are notorious for being super picky on biting a bait, but this 20 lb.( 39” ) Silver King had to have Alex from South Carolina’s live shrimp and stayed attached through the fight for a very quick photo before release……………… Black Drum continue to be a usual catch as they have all year, being a shellfish eater, they are quick to take our shrimp baits, most summer drum here in the north Indian River backcountry are school size of 1 to 5 lbs and roam along the bottom of holes and channels., repeat clients Andy and David from hooked up together from a school and landed these 2 Drum…… Long time repeat client Don from Texas, was out again on his usual summer trip while here on their family vacation, catching all the different species, including a nice Drum for young Cooper…………….. Young Brooks was out with repeat clients dad and grandpa from Georgia for another flats fishing Redfish trip, they made sure the youngster reeled in each of the 4 Reds they hooked up on mullet baits………………….. Seatrout are an every trip catch here in the backcountry, Jamie shows off a nice Speck she caught and released…………….. Nathan had “big fish” on a recent trip with his dad Ed, repeat Orlando clients, on a windy afternoon trip we squeezed in after a stormy morning forced us to wait until later that day for our trip……………….. Robert had a great time on the trip he was on with a group of friends from Virginia despite his lack of smile holding up his big Black Drum for a “CPR” photo……………….
