  1. Summer is knocking at the door here on the North Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon Florida, water temps approaching 80’F, mullet and baitfish schools here for the summer, big variety of different saltwater fish species to be caught here in the backwaters. Through the summer we will be catching Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Mangrove Snapper, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and always other surprise fish too. Summer patterns can be mostly scattered fish in the warm water with fish in ambush point locations, creek mouths and points with a good tidal current flow, and shadowing baitfish schools, and bait and crabs riding the tide along moving water channels. Fun surface striking fish are great for summer sight fishing activity, with open water fish like Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and even Tarpon, but Trout and Redfish will also come to the top. Summer baits include live shrimp, pigfish, pinfish, and finger mullet, for artificials , early morning top waters, 3” shad tail jigs and twitch baits. Morning trips are the summer norm, early feeding fish and a little cooler than the heat of mid day. Ed from Astor, Florida out with a couple friends on a recent backcountry trip caught all the usual different species as well as this over slot 28” Redfish on a live shrimp and light tackle…………….. Repeat client Mike from Buffalo NY caught a good back water Black Drum …………………… Spotted Seatrout are one of our main summer target species, usually hungry on summer mornings taking live baits and artificial lures, average size “Specks” are schooling fish, with larger Seatrout usually more solitary fish, we catch them on the edge of drop offs as well as shallow water flats near bait fish schools. Kacie with one of the Trout she caught on her trip………………… Kristin and Dennis from Alaska came fly fishing with me, landing Trout, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish on 6 weight fly tackle with my “Savedow Special” back water flies………………… This year has been good here for Black Drum, catching good numbers during winter and spring, along the bottom on channel edges and back country holes, they mainly eat shrimp and crabs, Dan from Lakeland Florida caught a nice one……….. On a fun trip with first time solo client Thomas from Texas we caught Snook, Reds, Jacks and more, Tom snapped a pic of me with a Red I caught on a 3” white shad tail jig off the edge of a flooded oyster bar……………….. Jack Crevalle are a staple of our fun rod bending backcountry catching, they are not picky, eat most any bait or lure, sizes usually 1 to 5 lbs in the back waters……………………… Fun Friendly Light Tackle Fishing Adventures Closest Saltwater Fishing to Orlando at New Smyrna Beach Calm Water Indian River Backcountry CHILDREN ALWAYS WELCOME – FAIR PRICES CALL OR TEXT ME ANYTIME 386-689-3781 http://EdgewaterRiverGuide.com/orlando-fishing-guide Capt. 2. Water temperatures are finally back to normal for April after a back and forth winter / spring pattern with cold January, warm February, and back to cold March. Fish patterns were confused with an early start to the coastal migrations, then the cold March halted the spring movements, to continue again during April. Good news so far on water quality in my area, clear to normal water conditions with continuing help by our close location to Ponce Inlet and daily tidal influx of sea water. As well as schooling near coastal fish moving in to the Intracoastal Waterway being the Indian River here at New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, and the north Mosquito Lagoon. We had a good Black Drum season all through the winter and spring with back water fish of 5 lbs down to little ones, they were along the channels and sloughs as well in in holes. Shrimp being my usual daily natural bait, which the Drum are happy to eat. On my mixed bag variety backcountry trips we also usually catch many different species on every trip, which can include Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Drum, Sheepshead, Whiting, Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and always some surprise catches. Young Parker was the winner of big fish on a trip with his family and friends.....................… Repeat client Dr Leonard from Canada did a couple fly fishing trips with me, catching a bunch of Trout and Ladyfish, including a 23" Speckled Trout on a "Savedow Special" fly which I tie, on a sink tip fly line for fishing the drop offs and channels in the back country...................... For a break, tossing a few shrimp on light tackle spin, in between fly casting, Dr. L caught some of the other usual species too, Jacks, Blues and a nice Snook out of some Mangrove Roots...............… First time client Cameron from Tennessee out on an afternoon trip also caught a good Black Drum…………………. A group of friends from Salt Lake City came out on a spring time afternoon trip and Gabby got big fish with a nice Black Drum…………….. Another repeat client, Gerry from Kentucky came with his family again this year, out on a fun backcountry trip, including some good Seatrout…………….. Caleb was all smiles with his Black Drum on light tackle after a good battle……………. Spring is always full of many good Jack Crevalle for rod bending fun, Greyson out again with family and friends on another trip with me………………….. 3. March 2018 has brought winter back to East Central Florida, nights in the 40’s and upper 30’s most of the month, water temperatures dropping back to 58’ to 60’ after a warm February had water temp up to 68’ to 72’, so a confused pattern of a spring like February then back to a March winter pattern has made for interesting but good fishing and catching here at Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River Backcountry. Early spring migration had already started with schooling Bluefish, Pompano, Jack Crevalle and oversize Ladyfish coming north to our area with the early warming water temps, Black Drum and Seatrout becoming more widespread through the backcountry after spending the winter in the deep holes and channels, and small schools of Redfish in the shallows sunning on the chilly days. With the cold water back again I have been fishing a mix of my winter and spring patterns and fishing holes, dropping live shrimp and 3” swim tail jigs into the holes also trying the spring pattern channels and drop offs. This has been a great season for Black Drum here in the back waters, young Logan from Orlando with the best Drum on a trip with his dad and friends, with several caught this day…………….. Rusty from Indianapolis was out with me on a 2 boat Mosquito Lagoon charter with my friend Capt Tony and his boat, we got on a school of Redfish at a shallow flat and sight fished a couple Reds……………….. We were catching a bunch of smaller “runt” Redfish on the edge of a Lagoon drop off when Rusty hooked a good fish being a nice Black Drum………………. Spring is known for Jack Crevalle here in the backcountry after spending the winter in south Florida, they move back north as the water warms, and can be here in big schools making for lots of fun catch and release action on these hard pulling game fish, Griffin with a good one…………… Shovelnose Hammerhead Sharks are also on the spring menu, we usually catch quite a few through March and April, long time client from Canada Al with a fun Shark…………….. Paige from Orlando with another good size drag pulling Jack Crevalle………………. With the cold water holding on late this year, Sheepshead have been an every trip catch as they are a winter fish liking the chilly water, young Andrew from Houston with a fun one………………. 4. As the busy early spring charter season has begun, I am doing many Mosquito Lagoon guided back country trips, water temperatures are rising from winter mid 50’ F range to the upper 60’ to low 70’s F’s now, starting the spring migration of game and bait fish coming back north after their spending the winter down south, Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Pompano and others are returning, adding to the many different species we catch here in the coastal saltwater backcountry, joining our resident fish which stay here year round including Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Black Drum, Sheepshead and Snapper. With the clear water from winter still around, the sight fishing for Redfish on the flats is a fun challenging hunt to find the schools and get a bait or lure in position for a strike. Back water mixed bag fishing is prime in spring, recent trips have been lots of fun with good catching, most trips with multiple mini slams of Seatrout, Redfish, and Snooklets, quite a few Black Drum, and catching the first several Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish of the warming season. First time clients from Miami and Seattle out last week had a great fun time, catching lots of different back water species on our light spinning tackle, Pedro got the biggest a nice Black Drum……………. Not to be outdone Doug shows off his best Black Drum of the many Drum landed this morning………………. Pedro also got a very nice Spotted Seatrout on a free line live shrimp……………. Young Lucas and family from Canada had a fun time out on a backcountry catching trip, including a nice Redfish………. Jody from New York caught her first ever Redfish among all the other saltwater species landed………… It has been a good season so far for Black Drum, they have been widespread through out my area of the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, from cute little small ones up to good size hard fighting bigger ones………... 5. Winter has arrived in East Central Florida, our first freezing temperatures after several warm winters in a row, water temperatures dropping in to the 40’s F, driving fish into the deep holes, and the shallow water schooling fish back on the flats to feel the sunshine during the day. More winter fish biting in the backwaters like Sheepshead and Bluefish, local resident species Redfish, Seatrout, and Black Drum bite all through the winter as they are more cold tolerant than sub tropical fish which are here also such as Snook and Tarpon which can be at risk when the water gets cold enough in shallower water spots were they cannot get to the bottom in deep enough water to avoid the colder surface temperatures. Schooling Redfish on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon is always a winter target, a fun sight fishing challenge, poling the boat to find the school, getting into position to be able to get baits to the fish. Canadian clients Claudia and Chris had a great backcountry trip with me , catching many different species dropping shrimp baits into the deeper holes, then after the sun was up enough we hit some flats finding a school of Redfish warming them selves in an oyster bar lined bay, they landed 5 Reds on our light spin tackle, Claudia did catch the largest one………………….. …………….but Chris caught more of them…………………… Repeat local client Rob from Orlando came on a back country trip again with a group of friends, fishing the holes and drop offs, catching Trout, Reds, Snook, Sheepshead, Snapper and Tim got the big one an 8 lb. Black Drum…………... I even got out a few times with some friends scouting and fishing, looking for new fishing spots to take clients on other days, we fish with artifical lures for search fishing moving along to see as much as possible on our hunt, even get to catch a few fish, had schooling Reds and Trout on a sun warmed flat on Mosquito Lagoon……………… Repeat client Steve from Canada came out with me with his friends catching a bunch of different species including the ever present backcountry Seatrout………………….. Another Redfish from another fun scouting trip, as late winter and spring arrives the guide business picks up with lots of charter trips so no need for scouting when out most days of the week with my fun clients…………. 6. Winter fishing is coming to central Florida, now still on the warm side with water temperatures in the upper 60’s, so a late fall pattern continues so far, Seatrout are widespread through the backcountry on Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River here in the New Smyrna Beach area. Still catching lots of different species with 10 to 15 varieties on most back water trips, in addition the Trout, we are landing Redfish, Snook, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, and more. Live shrimp still the best all around bait, as all the different species love them, as the water has been clearing with dropping water temps, sight fishing for flats Redfish with select size shrimp and live finger mullet are always a winter technique. With cooling water more Sheepshead and Drum come to the boat, this fall Pompano and Whiting have been in the backwaters here from their usual surf areas making for good light tackle fun on these species. Kelly caught a good Black Drum out of a deeper backcountry hole on a variety trip with lots of all the usual species also landed……………… Bill and Bruce here visiting from New Jersey out on a fun mixed bag backwaters trip, Bill with one of the better Seatrout caught……………… ……..and also several good Pompano landed on this mornings outing…………………. Repeat client Kevin from Savannah here for a Thanksgiving visit came out with his friends for a flats hunting trip for Redfish, landing just 3 Reds before a cold front arriving thunderstorm shortened our trip, Matt with one of the Reds……………. Jeff with another one of the good Pompano landed this fall ……………… Sheepshead are a winter/spring staple here, Ken with a nice one from a recent trip………… The backcountry here has many different fun hard fighting game fish species which school in good numbers, including Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish…………….. 7. Fall fishing patterns have arrived here in Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River at New Smyrna Beach, big schools of finger mullet cover the waters surface at first light with Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and more busting them with white water crashes, casting lures or bait in the mix for a fast hook up. The water level is still high but pretty clear in the backcountry, the first couple seasonal cold fronts arriving to East Central Florida this week, with north winds, night time temps in the 50’s, beginning the process of lowering our water temps as we move towards winter. Cool water patterns emerging in the backcountry like schools of Seatrout bunching up in holes and on drop off edges, also schools of small Redfish beginning to group together, and bigger lagoon Reds will start to school up as water temps drop. Catching here in the backcountry is always a variety of species, lately catches on my trips in addition to the fish already mentioned have included Snook, Snapper, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Flounder, Whiting and Pompano. As always we are also doing some flats fishing, hunting Reds and Trout on the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon, regular local client Robert was along with me again recently, poling the shallows for sight fishing, always more of a fun but challenging type of fishing, this morning landing several Redfish …… First time client sisters Barbara and Eleanor came on a cool, windy afternoon backcountry charter, we fished holes protected from the breeze catching the usual different species, Barbara with the best fish of the trip a nice Snook…………… John from Nashville set up a trip for him and his friends when they visited the area recently, choosing mixed bag variety fishing for the lots of catching, the fish cooperated well with many different species, including a nice Flounder caught by Reed…………… ……...Reed also got the best Trout of the many specks caught…………………. Repeat clients also from Tennessee out on another trip had multiple backcountry slams of smaller size Redfish, Snook, and Seatrout, along with lots of fun Jacks and Ladyfish, dad Randy also caught a couple nice size Black Drum………………. ………….daughter in law Amanda with one of the many good size high jumping Ladyfish caught……………… As the last few years have gone on, Snook have been a daily catch here again after the big freeze years back in the early 2010’s was very hard on our central Florida Snook population as Sean found out………………. 8. All is well here in East Central Florida after Hurricane Irma, the water is high, but is pretty clear following the big east wind pushed in ocean water to the Indian River backcountry and Mosquito Lagoon, the fall mullet run is going on with lots of bait fish schools, inshore game fish moving in on their migration towards the south, Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Tarpon in addition to our resident Seatrout, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Snook, and more. Fun fishing charters continue, both before and now after the storm, just a couple days before Irma’s arrival, was out on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon with regular client Vic from Orlando on his annual September trip with me, hunting Redfish, poling the grass flats, and catching some Seatrout on live baits off the edges on drop offs, Family friend Angel caught a 25” Red along a scenic old Florida palm tree lined shoreline………………. Vic was quite happy catching Redfish this morning also……………… Son Mikey caught the best Trout of the morning……………… New clients from Indiana and The Villages in Florida came out a few days after the hurricane past through, we started out in the backwaters, light tackle free line fishing, catching a little slower than would be usual with the flood level water and all after the storm, but still catching a bunch of Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and Snappers, by late morning we switched tactics to the flats hunting Redfish catching a few spot tails, Denise got a nice Red with an extra spot…………………… ……..and Linda with her Red catch…………………. Always some surprise catches in the back country, this one a 5.5 lb. Sheepshead caught by Larry, usually a winter catch, this one a summer Sheepy……………….. Kevin with a good Indian River back waters Seatrout…………… You never know what fish may be the highlight of the trip for different folks, this Puffer was Cody’s favorite of all the different species caught on this mixed bag variety trip with his family………………. Redfish scattering out on the flats and on backwater shorelines, seatrout hanging on the deeper drop offs hunting shrimp and baitfish, snook hugging close to structure to ambush their prey, jack crevalle and ladyfish schools making for fun light tackle catch and release rod bending. Summer bait choices range from live shrimp in the backwaters for variety catching as every saltwater fish eats a shrimp, to live finger mullet, pigfish, and pinfish. 15. Springtime backcountry catching is in full swing here at Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River, water temperatures have risen through the 60’s to the low 70’s bringing the migration of game fish through the area, jack crevalle, bluefish, ladyfish, pompano, bait fish like mullet, glass minnows and pilchards. Resident fish seatrout, redfish, sheepshead, snappers, and black drum also feeding on the bait schools and the local shrimp which run here in spring, making a live shrimp hard to beat for a go to bait. Multiple hookups are fun with schooling fish and sometimes surface action with attacks on baitfish and shrimp on the top. Local Linda brought her friends here visiting for spring out with me recently, we had a few good seatrout along with all the other fun species, Linda had the best speck of the morning…… Friend Lori caught the biggest jack crevalle of the trip……………… Last minute trip on a recent afternoon Bryan and friend from Kansas City had lots of fun catching fish species they never caught before including the star of the trip a 5 lb. black drum………………. Speaking of sheepshead, they are always here to be caught through the winter and spring months, Bill with a nice one…… Almost always some surprise catches on most trips in the backcountry, this time it was a serious 4 lb. Florida pompano caught by Frank……………. Jack crevalle are widespread through the waterway in spring, if they are swimming, they are eating and hard pulling making for always fun rod bending, Zak battled this one on light tackle………………. 16. Early spring has arrived to East Central Florida, water temperatures in the upper 60’s, warm water fish like Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish are starting to show up after spending the winter in south Florida, seeing the first of the year Manatees arrive in the area. Backcountry fishing has been full of different variety of fish caught, Redfish, Seatrout, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Whiting, Snook, Jacks, Lady’s, Bluefish, Mangrove Snapper, plus always a couple of surprise catches like the small Barracuda we caught last week. Redfish and Black Drum schools are still on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon, always a bit more a challenge to hunt shallow water schools in spring time, but a fun sight fishing time. First time client Bill came on a solo trip a couple weeks ago when winter was still here, and the water colder and lower, we hunted up a skinny water Redfish school in a back bay, sight catching a half dozen fish up to 24”……………… George and Harold came out on a backcountry trip a couple days ago, catching a good variety of all the different mixed species including a few convict fish Sheepshead…………….. Herman from Tallahassee, Florida was in Daytona for a few days and did a solo back waters trip, he is an artificial lure enthusiast so we only fished fake baits, catching several fish including a good Redfish which was eating with loud pops along the shoreline and H put his Gulp plastic in the right spot………………… Brian from Massachusetts was along with his group on a mixed bag trip catching a good Spotted Seatrout in the backcountry……………………. Father son team Doug and Matt from Michigan caught many species on a weathery morning, Matt pulled o good Red off an oyster shoreline on a live shrimp…………………. 2015 GulfShore 20’ by Young Boats CALL OR TEXT ME ANYTIME 386-689-3781 See my website http://EdgewaterRiverGuide.com MOSQUITO LAGOON FLATS FISHING AND INDIAN RIVER BACKCOUNTRY MIXED BAG SALTWATER FISHING TRIPS CHILDREN ALWAYS WELCOME – FAIR PRICES Near Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and Orlando, East Central Florida Capt. 17. I am excited for a new year of 2017 with all the different seasons and different fishing patterns and fish to come, we have finally had some chilly weather this mid winter after a mostly mild early winter. Colder temps clear up the water in Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River Backcountry, creating distinct winter patterns with some fish frequenting the flats and the sloughs within, while other fish gang up in the deeper holes of 10, 15 to 20 feet deep in the backcountry. Hunting the flats mean targeting primarily Redfish and Seatrout, sight fishing is the norm in clear shallow water, while the holes in the backwaters have more variety of species, regularly catching, Seatrout, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting, and always more different surprise catches hiding in the deep holes waiting to eat our shrimp. Repeat client Rick from Virginia came on a lagoon trip recently fishing all artificial soft plastic baits, first few hours we worked the flats catching about 15 fish, mostly Trout with several of them up to about 4 lbs, second half of the trip we headed up to the Edgewater backwaters with some deeper holes, switching to weighted soft plastics, catching lots more Trout and also a bunch of small Snook, Redfish, and Ladyfish……………….. James from Georgia was here to explore Mosquito Lagoon and did a trip with me in the backwaters on a foggy morning, trying some jig lures, also live shrimp, catching a good variety, some Trout, Snappers, small Reds and Snook, and a good little Black Drum……………….. Regular client Johanna from Orlando brought her kids on a trip during their Christmas vacation from school, all the kids caught a bunch of mixed species fish, targeting the deeper holes in the back waters, India caught the best fish of the trip a true Weakfish………………… Another Orlando repeat client Kevin did a trip with his dad here visiting for the holidays, a fun size Black Drum was one of the fish coming aboard……………… We have been catching many more Snook in the area for the last couple years, they are making a come back here after low populations for a few years following our last hard freeze winters during 2010 and 2011, great to be catching them again regularly, Randy with a fun Snook…………….. Even I get to catch a fish every now and then…………………. 2015 GulfShore 20’ by Young Boats CALL OR TEXT ME ANYTIME 386-689-3781 See my website http://EdgewaterRiverGuide.com MOSQUITO LAGOON FLATS FISHING AND INDIAN RIVER BACKCOUNTRY MIXED BAG SALTWATER FISHING TRIPS CHILDREN ALWAYS WELCOME – FAIR PRICES Near Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and Orlando, East Central Florida Capt. 18. Water is clearing and temperatures dropping with winter getting closer here in East Central Florida on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. The last few weeks has been fun fishing both in the backcountry for a variety of species and on the flats hunting Redfish and Seatrout, water is still high but slowly coming down as no rain has fallen for a month and cold fronts starting to come through with north and west winds which will continue to drop water water levels. Backcountry fish have been liking the clear water in the Intracoastal Waterway area with all the different fish eating shrimp, mullet, and soft plastic artificials, Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and more different species have come aboard my boat. AnglersNet's own Newt and his wife Bobbi came on their annual fall multi day charter trips with me again this year, lots of fun each day, a couple backcountry trips catching Trout, Snapper, Jacks, Reds, etc. Also a trip out to the flats catching a few Redfish, Newt loves to throw artificial lures, catching Reds on soft plastics is always fun……………… Paul from Michigan came along on a fun mixed bag backcountry trip catching all the different fish along the way with son Danny catching the big fish of the trip a fine Snook…………………. First time client Carl here on vacation from Pennsylvannia did a solo backcountry trip last week having a great time, the tone was set with the first fish of the morning being the biggest, a jumbo 45” Redfish which ate a live ladyfish bait and gave an epic battle on light tackle………………. Young Gene fishing the backwaters with me caught all the usual variety fish topped by a great Snook which had to have a live shrimp……………… Being the off season for charters this time of year even I got a chance to get out and scout and fish on Mosquito Lagoon, throwing soft plastics, jerk baits on the flats, on jig heads on the drop offs, Seatrout were pretty cooperative……………….. Along with a few Redfish in shallow water……………. 2015 GulfShore 20’ by Young Boats CALL OR TEXT ME ANYTIME 386-689-3781 See my website http://EdgewaterRiverGuide.com MOSQUITO LAGOON FLATS FISHING AND INDIAN RIVER BACKCOUNTRY MIXED BAG SALTWATER FISHING TRIPS CHILDREN ALWAYS WELCOME – FAIR PRICES Near Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and Orlando, East Central Florida Capt. 19. Thanks again Newt !! Always a blast fishing with Bobbi and you, I look forward to it each year !!
  20. Our water levels are high with clear ocean water pushed in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon after Hurricane Matthew made a close pass along our coastline. Redfishing the flats in high water means prowling shorelines as some flats have deeper water over them than reds prefer, also flats that are normally super skinny grass are a good depth of 12” to 20 “ which fish like to feed in. Backwater holes, drop offs, and channels don’t change as much as they are normally 5 to 15 feet deep so not that much change with higher water levels. These backcountry fish like to eat shrimp dropped along their lairs no matter the water level. Still plenty of Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead, Seatrout, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish as well as some Reds, Snook, and Drum in the backcountry area here in the Indian River at Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach. Young Cole caught the big one of his family’s mixed bag trip out with me recently, a good Redfish on light tackle made for an epic battle....................... The big blow pushed loads of ocean water into the estuary and with it some fish which are normally ocean dwellers, such as Cutlassfish aka Ribbonfish caught the other day on one of my backwaters trips.................. Repeat client Sam from Orlando came just before the storm on another flats fishing adventure hunting Redfish and catching a bunch of Seatrout also on live baits, daughter Kim with a good shallow water Red.......................... Their friend Brad with a good redfish sight fished which was tailing with a small school on a lagoon grass flat................................ Local client Jose came Redfish hunting with me and caught a few spottails....................... Dan with an over slot 30" Mosquito Lagoon Redfish caught on a live bait, we were on a drop off catching Trout, when the surprise big Red hit...................... 21. Fall is just days away on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, late summer fishing has been good with patterns holding with the dry weather keep water levels low as they have been last few months. The first glimpse of the fall mullet run has begun, schools of bait fish are appearing in the intracoastal waterway along with migrating gamefish, jack crevalle, bluefish, and more move south as autumn begins, making for great fun catch and release action with bigger schools of game fish in our waters. Surface striking activity makes for great sight fishing, as does the challenging lagoon flats fishing action of tailing Redfish which has been happening all summer on the shallow grass flats, quiet approach and accurate casts result in hookups on Reds feeding on shrimp in the grass. When not tailing in the grass, Reds and large Seatrout are chasing small bait fish near off the edges and drop offs. Long time regular client Ron from Ohio did a solo flats fishing trip recently, early Redfish targeting successful with 3 spotails up to 32”, then off to Seatrout fishing with live bait catching a bunch of specks................................ Jerry from Nashville here visiting brought his granddaughter on another trip with me, we caught Redfish, Seatrout, and a couple Snook by Ilanit completed a Mosquito Lagoon Slam for her..................... Repeat client Rolando from Orlando recently did 2 trips with me to the Lagoon, one of the days with his son Nick who was home on leave, we caught lots of slot size Trout as well as a 30” Redfish....................... The other trip we found a few good Redfish at the first spot early morning, Rolando got the best one............................ Then off to Seatrout targeting with good results, a bunch of slot size Specks, and a couple big ones .......................... Another regular client Vic from Orlando came on his annual late summer trip, a few good fish early, brother-in-law Lindsey with a big Trout on the first cast with a mullet bait ....................... And Vic with one of the Redfish caught during the morning......................... 22. Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River has been a great place to catch through the summer of 2016, it has been unusually dry so far this summer causing water levels to drop to very low levels which is a plus for lagoon fishing, concentrating the fish on drop offs, in holes, and on shallow grass flats. Tailing Redfish, live bait Seatrout catching, and backcountry mixed bag light tackle drift fishing have been some of my tactics producing fish this summer. We have had a great summer vacation season here in the New Smyrna, Daytona Beach, and Orlando with lots of visitors as well as locals going on fun fishing trips. Young Lane and his dad fished the Lagoon with me recently, Lane caught the best Redfish of the morning , then we Trout fished live baits catching loads of Specks.......................... Long time regular client George did his summer flats fishing trip again as usual, this year bringing along Christine who caught a good Red and again many Spotted Seatrout as we have all summer long......................... Another longtime repeat client from Orlando also came on his yearly summer Lagoon trip, bringing friend Josh for his first time with me, early morning found us on a shallow flat close to an island shoreline, with good fish waking off the shore and Redfish up shallow with shimmering red backs out of the water, we sight fished a couple Reds and Josh caught his lifetime biggest Trout at 25”............................ More repeat clients from Georgia also brought a new friend on this year’s annual trip, we had a good Seatrout bite on live bait and newbie Jake caught an “over the slot” 28” Redfish.................. The calm ocean of summer allows for venturing out through Ponce Inlet for some near shore ocean fishing which we did a couple times this July. Theer are a couple of artificial reef areas with in easy reach of small boats, fun light tackle big game fishing can be quite exciting, on one of these trips we caught a few sharks, Blacktips, and Silkys, the highlight of this trip was a 30 plus pound Jack Crevalle caught by 15 year old Adian...................... On another ocean trip, Barracuda were the fish wanting to bite, we caught and released 5 in the 15 to 20 pound size on free lined live baits, Wayne with one of the toothy cudas............................ Indian river backcountry mixed bag variety trips have been great this summer also, lots of species caught on every trip, perfect for family size trips, great for kids of all ages, catching Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead, Ladyfish, Jack Crevalle, just to name a few catches, long time regular Nathan form Georgia with a good Snook in the backcountry...................... Scott from Houston had a great mixed bag trip including a slam of Redfish, Snook,, and Trout............................. 23. Summer of 2016 has been fun so far, lots of great weather, pretty mornings, catching fish. Mosquito Lagoon my usual Redfish and Seatrout hunting grounds and the back waters of the Indian River at New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater for mixed bag variety fishing, always many different species biting on live shrimp baits with free lined light tackle. A recent variety trip had 19 different fish species including, Trout, Snook, Croakers, Whiting, Pompano, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and so on. On the flats of the Lagoon we hunt for tailing or waking Redfish on the shallow grass flats and edges, live baits can be the best summer Seatrout tactic on the deeper drop offs. First time client Paul from New Smyrna brought his son out for a lagoon trip a few days ago and the Trout were happy to cooperate catching a bunch on live pigfish and croakers topped by this 26” speck ................................ Regular clients from Central Florida came an their annual summer trip with me, staying shallow for Reds the first couple hours catching a few good spot tails, then switched to Trout catching about a dozen specks and a few Jack Crevalle also stretched their lines. Bridget had best luck on the Redfish............................ Derrick from Alabama brought his crew on a variety catching trip with lots of action from the usual mixed bag fish in the backcountry, best fish was a quality size Seatrout which had to have one of our live shrimp.......................... Regular clients from Palm Coast Florida came out Redfish hunting a couple weeks ago, a little slow but we managed a few good Reds including this over the slot size 28” fish by Christy........................... Bob from Tennessee and his wife did a mixed bag trip and Bob got a backcountry super slam, Redfish, Trout, Snook, and a 45 “ long Shark............................ Love when kids have a great time on the backcountry trips, fast action and lots of fish make it very fun the little guys........................ Whitney from Atlanta came out recently with the goal of catching her first Redfish which we managed at our first stop of the morning on the flats....................... Love a multi spot Redfish like this beauty Garrett caught.............................. 24. Summer is knocking at the door in East Central Florida, fishing patterns transitioning to warm water on Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Backcountry. Mullet schools building in numbers, fish becoming more scattered through out the lagoon and backcountry, beautiful calm mornings with afternoon clouds and cooling sea breeze coming off the ocean. Warming water also means small finger mullet in shallow water during early morning hours to be caught for great live baits as well as live pigfish growing to bait size as summer arrives. My summer tactics include shallow water Redfish hunting the flats of Mosquito Lagoon, Seatrout are always a summer target species also, some of the largest Trout of the year come to the boat during the summer months flats fishing. Edgewater backcountry mixed bag trips are always fun fast action catching many different species on every trip out, light spin tackle makes for fun easy catching. Steve from Tennessee set up 2 trips with me recently, with his kids on one of the days and with adults on the second trip, both good fast mixed bag action, plenty of Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and more in the mix, top fish for the trips was a 30” Snook which came to visit for CPR, Catch Photo Release............................ The biggest battle of the trips was the 45” Shovelnose Shark Steve landed on the light backcountry tackle.............................. Lenny brought Hayden out on a father, son trip, first we did a bit of backcountry fishing catching a bunch of mixed bag for the first couple hours, Hayden got the biggest Jack Crevalle..................... .................then we ran down to the flats for our second half and Hayden hooks up and released a 28” Redfish.......................... I was invited to be in a multiple boat corporate charter out of Oak Hill, fishing the flats was the order of the day, so Redfish hunting we went, it was a little slow but we had several good bites and Reds landed, Allison with hers................................. ............and Spencer caught a good one also, this Redfish a rare one with no spots at all................ First time client Charlie came on a solo Redfish trip, had a very fun time catching a few good Reds and a 23” Seatrout as a topper......................... Great picture of Jordan and a good Trout caught on a recent mixed bag variety trip.................... 25. Great spring fishing continues in the Mosquito Lagoon backcountry and the Intracoastal Waterway area here at Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach where I fish which has nice clean water, unfortunately locations further south in the Indian River have been experiencing poor water quality caused by an algae bloom. Spring migrating game fish Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish have been thick with lots of fun rod bending, also good numbers of Seatrout and Mangrove Snapper, also some Redfish, Sheepshead, Black Drum, and others eating our live shrimp baits. Summer patterns will begin next month with more Redfish hunting on the flats, and Seatrout live baiting at Mosquito Lagoon. Bill from Jacksonville came down with his young boys and fished with me recently in the back waters, the boys had great fast action with all the mixed variety species including lots of fun Jacks with several up to about 5 lbs............................ Repeat snow bird client Bob from Ohio came on a solo flats fishing trip a couple weeks ago catching a few nice Redfish up to 26” also a quality Seatrout of about 3 lbs....................... Shovelnose Sharks (like Hammerheads) up to 40” have made their annual spring visit in the backcountry, have had several caught recently, big battle on light spin tackle, Roger from England was here visiting his Florida cousin, they had another fun trip with me, including one of the Shovelnose, this one approx 15 plus lbs, a quick picture before we released him....................... Longtime local regular client Ed put together 2 spring time trips with friends on the first trip and a few young men he mentors on the other trip, both fun trips with lots of the usual backcountry fish, William with a good Black Drum from the adults trip...................... First time Oviedo Florida client Todd and his 5 year old daughter “Ace” had a fun trip recently, Ace was tickled catching a bunch of fish including some battles with fun Jack Crevalle................... Redfish bite in the backcountry also as Zak found out......................... Fast jumping Ladyfish are always entertaining, Anne’s family had a blast catching a bunch of them.......................
