  2. February 2016 has been pretty cold by Florida standards, had frost on the boat a few mornings, water temperatures in the mid 50’s has brought clear water to Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River backcountry. Redfish are schooled in shallow water, big Seatrout sunning in the flats along with Reds on clear bluebird winter days, Sheepshead, Trout, and Bluefish some of our main target species in the backcountry creeks and channels. Shallow water flats is a hunting game in winter, sight fishing, casting select size live shrimp a primary tactic, dropping 1/8 oz. jigs with shad tails, gulp shrimp, and live shrimp a main technique on deeper drop offs and channels. It’s almost spring and during March will return larger Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and much more baitfish as the water begins to rise in temperature once again with winter in our wake. Reds and Trout will begin scattering out on the flats as winter schools begin the process of breaking up into smaller groups in a spring time pattern. Very longtime regular client Gene from Ohio brought his old friend Marty down for a 3 day charter with me recently, we mixed it up a bit fishing some different patterns, day 1 was shallow water Redfishing, good fun and success with 12 Reds landed and several more fought with pulled hooks, a great tone set on the first cast with Marty catching fish number 1............................. ..............Day 2 was very windy and cold so we went targeting variety fish in the backcountry out of the wind fishing deep holes back in the creeks, landed big numbers including Trout, Blues, Snapper, runt Reds, and Sheepshead......................... ...............Day 3 back out in the Lagoon, Seatrout were quite cooperative on the drop offs, landing at least 50 specks on jigs and live shrimp................... A couple local snow birds from New Smyrna asked me for an instructional trip to get ideas on places and techniques to fish their boats so we covered lots of ground from Edgewater and down south into Mosquito Lagoon catching a few fish along our way, Ted with a good Red caught on a shad tail jig....................... Mike from Deland received a gift certificate for a trip with me as a Christmas gift from his son, we went on a beautiful slick calm morning, getting on a school of Reds first thing and sight catching a few spot tails.......................... Another great early morning school of Reds allowing us to land a few at our first stop this morning of a multiboat charter I was invite to be in with 8 other guide boats involved, JD got the first one.......................... 3. Chilly weather has finally arrived to Central Florida this January 2016, water temperatures have dropped to around 60’, clearing in the backcountry and flats, and cwater levels oming down some with north winds behind cold fronts. Redfish forming shallow water schools, mullet have moved south to warmer locations, Seatrout schooling on edges and drop offs, Sheepshead showing up in the backcountry, winter patterns here after an warm start to 2016. Select size live shrimp, hooked at the tail for a long cast, can be the go to bait for our winter Redfish, freelined shrimp and white jigs for drop off Trout. Backcountry mixed bag fishing focusing on deeper holes and channels, and hitting a few flats looking for Reds in between hopping holes. Live small finger mullet when I can catch them with my cast net also on the menu for winter shallow spots targeting Reds and Specks. Repeat clients Tom and Sandy from Palm Coast Florida do trips with me when their 9 year old grand kids come to visit, we usually do mixed bag with young kids, but this time trying our luck with more challenging flats fishing, water was still warmer before the recent cold spell, first spot I picked to try was the right one, 6 Redfish, all from 24” to 29”, young Maddox battled the biggest one, with a little help from grandma and me............................. .................Anson caught a few of them and did a great job catching and modeling for photos........................ New clients Rick and Linda from Virginia are avid anglers at home, going on their first Mosquito Lagoon flats trip with me, they are artificial lure enthusiasts so we fished weedless rigged jerk baits for shallow spots and Gulp shrimp on jig head for slightly deeper locations, Linda caught her share of the dozen fish landed, both Reds and Trout............................ ...........................Rick with one of the quality Speckled Trout he caught on jerk baits out of the shallow grass and sand holes we fished.............................. Long time regular local clients Dr Ed and Matt came on a flats trip recently, turned out to be a windy chilly day, making for tough conditions, but was a success with each catching a quality Redfish, Dr Ed with his 30” spot tail............................. ...........................Matt got a good “top of the slot” Red.......................... Dave and Sheryl here visiting from Massachusetts came with me hunting for Redfish with good results of 5 fish landed, Dave caught his first ever Red a great 33” fish.......................... ......................love the blue nails for a cool photo of Sheryl and one of the Reds she caught................... 4. Staying mild to warm so far this late November and now into December 2015 here in East Central Florida and our inshore saltwater area of Mosquito Lagoon and the northern Indian River. Water temperatures still up in the mid 60’s to 70’, along with high water levels, chilly weather should arrive somtime soon, cold fronts along with north winds will drop water temperature and levels. Lagoon flats Redfish and Seatrout remain more scattered than schooled with the late fall pattern hanging on, schooling will become more prevalent after some winter chilling arrives. Clarity has been improving with pretty clear water in places but still cloudy in others, more healthy grass on the bottom keeps the water clearer with less exposed silt to suspend, where flats with less grass tend to cloud easier with exposed mud bottoms. Sight fishing will continue to improve as winter arrives bringing colder and cleaner water for Redfish and Trout hunting on Mosquito Lagoon. This time of year more the off season for my charters which calls for more scouting trips looking for fish to bring clients to later on. I do as much looking as fishing while searching the flats, but making some casts of course is part of the fun. Here I am with a fine 27” Seatrout I caught on a Gulp shrimp jig, one of my go to winter artificial choices, this fish waked out off the shoreline I was working, pitched the bait in it’s path and hooked her up, all of the largest Spotted Seatrout are females and best released for future breeding, so we did CPR, catch, photograph, and release on this one..................................... Another recent scout trip my friend and I found an area with the best sight on the flats, tailing Redfish, we caught a few, sight cast mullet and weedless soft plastic lures to the tailers, here the largest we caught of the group, also catch and release on as I always do on scout trips................... Still doing some guide trips as always, first time clients from Jacksonville Florida included Yvette who had the best luck, catching 3 Redfish first thing on our flats trip............................. ...............not to be outdone, brother Chad had the biggest of the morning at 26”......................... My backcountry mixed bag variety trips are always fun, year round, sure thing light tackle catching of usually around 10 or more species being caught, winter time including Trout, Sheepshead, Bluefish, Black Drum, and always surprise catches, on a recent trip Jim caught this approx 40 plus inch Shovelnose Shark................................. .....................school size Seatrout are a staple catch while variety fishing here Donette with a nice backcountry speck......................... Bigger Trout do like the shallow water here on the Lagoon, here me with another nice one approx 25” , on soft plastic lure while out scouting the flats recently................. 5. Water temperatures are finally dropping a little now in November to the mid 70 levels after a warm autumn so far in East Central Florida, water levels however are a different story with very high water still in Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River. Plenty of baitfish still around, schools of mullet continue to move down the waterway, slowly working their way south not in a hurry with the warm water temps, once our first chilly spell comes they will speed up their journey to the south Florida wintering grounds. Redfish hunting on a high water lagoon includes targeting shorelines of the uncountable mangrove islands as Reds will gravitate to the shallow water near these edges, also grass flats that are normally too shallow to float a boat are now a good depth of 1 to 2 feet, flats usually fished during normal water levels are currently much too deep right now, flooded conditions make for a challenging pattern on shallow water Reds, but still fun and still catching some fish. Indian River backcountry fishing has been good with plenty of Seatrout and Mangrove Snapper, fun inshore game fish Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish make for great rod bending, regular client Charlie from Pennsylvania arranged a 2 day charter recently, first day on the flats hunting Redfish, second day variety backcountry fishing, both mornings fun and successful, variety trips always have some surprise fish come aboard, this time was a 29” Snook caught by Tom on a live shrimp...................... ................ Our flats trip had 5 Redfish up to 26” plus a good Seatrout bonus fish, Charlie with a good spot tail..................... ................. and Tom with one of his good Reds.................. Regular long time local client Donovan did a solo Redfish trip in November, started catching fish a first spot, catching 5 Reds to 25”, plus a good Trout caught on a live finger mullet................... Kyle here visiting from Texas, found my website and booked a solo flats trip, a much fun morning with 4 Redfish a couple caught sight fishing a flat with cruising fish...................... Local resident Trevor wanted to treat his girlfriend to a fishing trip for her birthday, so we went Redfish hunting on the flats, started off with a bang, with Reds first thing, turned slow in the second half, but we still had a great time, 4 redfish were caught, birthday girl Amy was trilled with a Red on her first cast...................... Dan and family from Tennessee came with me on a mixed bag variety backcountry trip, catching lots of fun fish , many different species as usual , including good size hard fighting Jack Crevalle from a surface striking school chasing mullet, sight casting in to the white water strikes for instant hook ups........................ 2015 GulfShore 20’ by Young Boats.................. 6. Water levels have been at an epic high flood level on Mosquito Lagoon after a heavy rainy season during late summer, Redfish hunting moves tight to shorelines and on shallower grass flats that are normally to skinny to float a boat, with flood conditions having 1 to 2 feet of water on them. A good fall baitfish run has brought plenty of mullet schools moving through being surface busted by Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, and Ladyfish. Indian River backcountry mixed bag trips have been much fun with good action from Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Jacks, Ladies, Black Drum, and always a surprise fish or two. New clients from Iowa came on a mixed bag trip recently and had a blast with great action, they counted 16 different species of saltwater fish caught, Laura got the big fish of the morning this 7.5 lb Black Drum........................... AnglersNet.co.uk's own Newt and Bobbi came fishing with me and did some backcountry mixed bag fishing and some Lagoon Redfishing on their trips this fall, good fun afternoon action in the backcountry including a nice Snook for Bobbi......................... And Bobbi’s brother Bill joined us for flats fishing catching a few nice Redfish...................... Carl from California was in town for a meeting and found time to fit in a solo fishing trip with me, also a good bite morning with many different species including many hard fighting Jack Crevalle........................ Repeat local client Claude came on another fly fishing trip in the backcountry having a great time catching a few small fish on fly including a Redfish....................... Regular client Lorin from central Florida and friends called for a late afternoon flats fishing trip, tough windy conditions greeted us so we were happy to catch a couple quality Redfish....................... Pete with another good Edgewater Backcountry Black Drum............................. 2015 Gulfshore 20’ by Young Boats.................. 7. Fall is just around the corner, first cool front passing through central Florida, but water temperatures still at summer levels in the low 80’s, Mosquito Lagoon water still cloudy and fairly high, Redfish still in the summer pattern, scattered and in small schools, adult Seatrout roaming the flats and school size Trout off the drop offs and deeper grass, plenty of mullet, both large size in the shallows and finger mullet schools trying to keep a low profile as game fish are always hunting them for lunch. Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and Bluefish starting to show up as the first early wave of the fall migration heading south of game fish and mullet, down through the lagoon and along the ocean beach. Hunting Redfish on Mosquito Lagoon remains in summer pattern for a while longer, scattered slot size fish mixed in with bait schools in the flats, and small schools of overslots roaming near the lagoons islands and shallows. Two young couples here on vacation from Atlanta went with me on their first ever flats fishing trip hunting Reds, we had very good action with many good bites, landing several fish, the ladies each caught our best 2 fish, Heather with a 31” spottail................................. ..................... and Dana with her 28” Redfish........................ On a mid September flats trip, first time clients from north Florida caught 5 Redfish, mostly early at our first spot in the flats, then catching many Seatrout on deeper grass, off the edges of the flats mid to late morning, the highlight of the trip was the 27.5” Speck caught by Shane on one of the shallow grass flats we hunted......................... Brett and Dale drove up from south Florida to hunt Mosquito Lagoon Redfish with me and were not disappointed on their first ever flats experience, having a great time, getting to see some tailing Reds, and catching several good fish, Brett caught the largest of the morning........................ A group of friends from central Florida chartered me on a combo trip, part mixed bag variety fishing, a fun start with fast action for a while with Trout, Ladyfish , Jack Crevalle, and more, and part flats fishing, by mid morning we went to the shallows hunting Redfish, Katrina was very happy with her spottail........................... .......................and Andrew was also with a good Redfish........................... Repeat client Vic from Orlando booked his annual fall trip and invited his son and friend to come along, we had great results with Trout on live baits, catching many in the slot size, as well as many more small ones carefully released to grow up. Derrick with a good upper slot Speck........................ ..........................and Vic with one of the 3 Redfish caught early morning at our first shallow flats fishing hole............................. 2015 Gulfshore 20’ by Young Boats.................. 8. Late summer 2015 has been good fishing as well as catching, higher water levels after the last few weeks of a good typical afternoon rainy season, lots of baitfish schools, still lots of good fun Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River fishing going on, with the higher water Redfish hunting locations shift to previously very shallow grass flats now with a favorable depth of 1 to 2 feet deep, also shorelines in places now a good depth, with water out from the islands now deeper. The summer water being cloudy, baits with scent or vibrations can lead the fish to be able to find the offering, some of the largest Seatrout of the year can be caught on a shallow fished bait intended for Redfish, such is the case of this jumbo 29” Speck Fernando caught with me next to a shallow water oyster bar in the Edgewater backcountry....................... On the same trip young Joey caught this nice Redfish early morning at our first fishing spot, several more Trout also caught this morning on live pigfish baits in the north Mosquito Lagoon backcountry.............................. Repeat clients from Pennsylvania had a very fun flats fishing trip, young Lucas caught his very first Redfish......................... ..................and brother Luke with one of the Trout caught................... Gotta love a sunrise Redfish at the first stop of the morning like this 28” fish caught by Mike, they had me slip in this photo, the Mike and Mike show......................... Regular client Darrell with a vacation home in Ponce Inlet brought his friend along on a Mosquito Lagoon flats trip, another good first spot Redfish bite with 4 up to 30”, then off to Trout fishing with quite a few specks, Brad with a good Red picture......................... New clients from north Florida had a great Redfish result with 6 spot tails , 4 of them were about 31” along with a couple smaller ones, Matt with one of the good ones........................... .................and Don shows off another one.............................. Mixed bag variety trips as always are much fun, catching lots of many different species, easy less challenging style of light tackle fishing going for big numbers of fish, including Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and Sheepshead, to name a few, my brand new boat the 2015 GulfShore 20’ by Young Boats is great for my Mosquito Lagoon fishing charters....................... 9. The summer of 2015 has been great so far, Mosquito Lagoon Redfishing and Seatrout catching, as well as Indian River backcountry variety mixed bag fishing have all been really good with Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, and more. Low rain fall through early summer has our water levels very low, great bait fish populations with huge numbers of mullet schools is a big plus for the local food chain. The low water levels can concentrate game fish in certain locations, and shallow grass flats showing tailing Redfish at times. Bridget and David from central Florida came out fishing with me again catching a few good Redfish on the flats, here Bridget caught and released this overslot 33” Red............................ First time clients from Orlando Sam and daughter Kim had a great fun morning catching a few good Redfish and several good Seatrout on live bait, topped by this “lifetime” size 29” Seatrout caught by dad................... ...................and Kim with one of the Mosquito Lagoon Redfish..................... A group of new 4 clients from Georgia went with me while on their family summer vacation to Daytona and had great success with 8 Redfish between 33” and 24” as well as about a dozen Seatrout on live pigfish baits, here Dexter with the big one of the morning...................... Regular clients from Tulsa OK went with me again out hunting Reds and Trout on the Lagoon, catching a few good Reds early, then going for Seatrout on live baits later in the morning, Wayne with another catch and release overslot Redfish...................... Going on lots of fun variety mixed bag trips in the backcountry this summer, usually catching a dozen or more different species with light tackle, free line drift fishing with live shrimp, has been a banner summer for Snapper as well as catching Trout, Jacks, and always more species, including quite a few good Black Drum this summer........................... Kirin and friends here on vacation from Ireland had a great trip catching Redfish, variety species and Seatrout........................... More regular clients from Georgia, Marshall, Athena, and daughter Miranda had another very fun successful Lagoon trip for 8 Redfish and many Seatrout, daughter with a good Red...................... 10. Introducing my brand new charter guide boat, a 2015 GulfShore 20 by Young Boats, is wide and stable just like my old boat, is perfect for my Mosquito Lagoon flats fishing trips for Redfish and Seatrout, and also for my Indian River backcountry mixed bag variety fishing trips, at 20 feet long is quite spacious and allows me to comfortably accommodate from 1 to 4 anglers............... The very first fish caught on my new GulfShore was a great 27” Seatrout caught by Paul............. New clients Chuck and Zach from Orlando Florida went Redfishng on the new boat each catching an over the slot Red and a slot size Red, Chuck’s big fish was 30”......................... ........................and Zach with his 28” spot tail...................... On the last trip on my old boat, regular local clients Ed and Don brought a couple friends along on a flats fishing trip, a good result with 8 Redfish caught and Charlie landed a beauty of a 25” Seatrout................. Craig and Jerry from Michigan came with me on a Mosquito Lagoon Redfish trip, several Reds caught on the grass flats, Jerry with a 26” Redfish....................... ...................and Craig with his best one of the trip...................... Ben from Colorado had a great time catching Redfish, a couple nice Seatrout also caught on this trip..................... My backcountry mixed bag variety trips have been very good all of 2015 and continue to be , lots of fish caught and always many different species including Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Black Drum, and more, Georgia and Ashley with a Jack double header ................ 11. Summer fishing patterns have arrived to the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon Florida, rising water temperatures, mullet and baitfish schools continue streaming in from the south, early mornings alive with surface activity and feeding fish waking up with the light of the day. Both flats fishing for Redfish and Seatrout as well as backcountry variety mixed bag fishing trips are great summer time fishing choices here in the East Central Florida inshore saltwater intracoastal waterway. New clients from Ft Myers FL, Dalton, Richie and Brian had an offshore ocean trip planned but were blown out of that plan by high winds on the ocean, so they went flats fishing with me on the calm protected Mosquito Lagoon, of the 7 Redfish they caught, most were of normal size, near the 18” to 27” slot, however Richie got his largest ever 37” Red with a big light tackle battle...................... .................A few good Seatrout also caught this morning, Dalton with a 23” speck.................... On a recent afternoon backcountry mixed bag trip, a group of first time clients from Pennsylvania had a great fun time, catching Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and their favorite catches were a few good Black Drum including this nice one caught by Bobbi................. I put together a 2 day, 2 boat charter with a group of 6 men from Stuart FL, asked my friend Capt Tony to be the 2nd boat. Flats fishing for Redfish on Mosquito Lagoon was the target of the trip, on my boat the guys had a total of 10 Redfish caught on the flats and also a bunch of Seatrout we fished up on artificials, drifting over deeper sea grass beds. Nick had a great battle with a 31” Red, then had a seat to hold it for his photo........................... ....................Stuart caught the biggest Red of the 2 days at 32”....................... Lisa and Mark here on vacation from Wisconsin made a morning with me part of their visit to Daytona Beach, choosing a variety mixed bag backcountry trip, catching all the usual mix of fish, including Black Drum and Lisa with a quality Seatrout........................ Jeff and Brian from Orlando came with me hunting Redfish on the flats, we had success with a few good ones from 28” to 30”, here Jeff with a multispot 29” spottail........................ 12. April 2015 has been another great month of inshore saltwater fishing trips here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon Florida. Clients catching everything from Redfish and Seatrout, Black Drum and Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, Sharks, Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and more. My backcountry mixed bag trips have been great, 10 or more species on most trips, keeping it interesting waiting to see what type of fish will surface next. Flats fishing trips targeting Redfish and Seatrout on the shallow grass beds at Mosquito Lagoon in the Canaveral National Park waters is fun sight fishing fun while hunting the flats for Reds. At the end of March Chris and daughter Regan went Redfishing with me on a chilly north windy morning, makes for tough sight fishing but each caught and released a large size Red, Chris with a 33” fish, and Regan caught a 31.5” Red she had a hard time holding up, so I got to model it with her.................... Also late March, still cool with early spring pattern, regular “snowbird” client Ed from Illinois did his annual trip with me catching lots of Bluefish, Jacks, and Sheepshead topped by this jumbo “convict fish”.......................... New clients from Indiana Tammy and Shon brought the family with me on a mixed bag trip and had a great time with a super catching morning, some of everything coming in, the kids had a time catching Reds, Sheepys, Blues, Jacks, and mom caught the biggest Speckled Trout................ Amanda, Wayne and their kids from Toronto had a very fun time on their spring break trip, and I had to share this great photo of Aisha so proud of her big Seatrout .................. Longtime returning clients Craig and family from Orlando went again recently, here Matthew with an oversize Sheepshead.......................... .............. and family friend Brandon with one of the 3.5 foot long Shovelnose Sharks which were around for a couple weeks here in the backwaters, cruising the shorelines, we sight fished this one, a big battle on my light weight spinning rods........................ New local residents Henry and Maria who just moved here from Miami asked me to take them on an instruction flats fishing trip on Mosquito Lagoon so they could be more successful on their own flats boat, taught them navigating the areas waterway, some fishing techniques, and even caught a couple quality Redfish, here Henry with an overslot 29” fish..................... James was visiting from England and wanted to catch Florida fish on fly, which he did landing Trout, Jacks, and Ladyfish on his fly rod, then going for more different species on shrimp, catching a couple good Black Drum....................... 13. Spring 2015 fishing patterns are in full swing here in East Central Florida, inshore saltwater migrating fish are passing through the Indian River on the intracoastal waterway area and backcountry of Mosquito Lagoon, New Smyrna Beach , and Edgewater. Big schools of fun hard fighting Bluefish and Jack Crevalle have been thick for the last couple weeks, joining all of the local resident inshore fish Seatrout, Black Drum, Sheepshead to name just a few of the different fish we usually catch on my backwaters mixed bag fishing trips with usually about 10 or more species each trip. In the last couple weeks clients also have caught Pompano, Flounder, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting, and others. Fun light tackle fishing freeline style with live shrimp and small lures. Here is young Cade with a great Sheepshead from a late winter trip with his family, one of several sheeps they caught along with many Blues and more............................. Redfishing on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon is always on my mind also, sight fishing is the winter/spring pattern with schooling Reds in shallow water, visually spotting the groups of fish, watching for wakes and in best case scenario tailing Reds like new clients Joe and Jeff from Buffalo NY got to see with me from over size fish feeding in the grass on a pretty calm early morning, well placed select size shrimp sight casting to the fish hooked up Joe with this 29” Redfish...................... And then Jeff with his 28” spot tail beauty............................ New clients from Canada, Marylee and Gordon went out 2 days with me, also sight fishing Reds one day, a few were landed and a few pulled hooks, the lady had best luck here with her 33” fish......................... Gordon caught the best fish on our mixed bag trip with a quality size Black Drum which was hiding in a deep hole in the Edgewater Backcountry and just had to have his live shrimp.................... New client Jim from New Jersey wanted to experience for the first time Redfishing on “The Lagoon” and had a great time seeing many fish waking in schools and also tailing on the grass flats, sight catching 4 Reds from 27” to 30” including this very cool, 12 spot fish...................... Many time repeat clients Matt and family from Kentucky had a very fun variety fishing backcountry trip a few days ago, catching loads of Blues, Jacks, Sheepshead and more, young Drake also caught a nice Seatrout...................... Another nice Black Drum from one of my backwater deep holes caught by new client Mike’s dad on their mixed bag trip............................. 14. Thank you for the kind words Newt, always a pleasure and loads of fun fishing with Bobbi and you !!
  15. Winter fishing patterns finally came to East Central Florida by late December into February 2015 with water temperatures dropping to mid even lower 50’s, crystal clear water on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon, beautiful dark green color in the deeper spots, schooling Redfish and Seatrout up shallow, with Sheepshead, Snapper, Seatrout and more in the deep holes. Water levels remain higher than normal for our chilly months after an unusually wet late fall and early winter. On colder days we search the flats for schooling Reds with sight fishing techniques, casting select size live shrimp, a winter time food of choice, live finger mullet will also catch them while holding back off the fish when they become skittish. Craig from Sanford, Florida brought his family to fish the flats with me on a chilly morning last week, targeting bigger fish we only caught a few but they were good ones, Redfish from 28” to 33” at 14 lbs, great battles on the 10 lb test spin tackle. Craig with the smallest 28” spot tail, photo showing the clear cold water in the foreground.................. Son McLean with one of the bigger ones which we caught at midday after a beautiful cold morning sun warmed the water up a degree or two and got the fish feeding better........................ My Indian River backcountry fishing trips are always much fun with winter mixed bag catches targeting Seatrout, Sheepshead, Bluefish, Redfish, and always a few more species. As spring arrives the Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish will arrive back in our waters after wintering in south Florida adding more fun target game fish starting in March. Young Dominick and family had a great time recently backcountry fishing with me......................... Regular clients Richard and Pat from Virginia and Edgewater went out this week catching 8 Redfish in the shallows, we got to see many more schooling Reds in a few spots that were too cleaver for us to catch, but very cool to see them swimming while sight fishing the winter Mosquito Lagoon flats........................ Rob on a recent trip with a nice flats caught winter Seatrout.............................. Sheepshead are hard fighters, good looking backcountry cold water fish, and fun for kids and adults ..................... Rob and Howard had a great time on their trip with me on another chilly sunny Florida winter day catching a half dozen Reds, these two at the same time with their little double along a pretty tree line shore................... 16. New Year 2015 has brought an unusual warm winter fishing pattern for the last few weeks to Mosquito Lagoon Florida, water levels remain quite high for this time of year along with above average winter water temperatures in the mid 60’s at this time. Looking forward to some chilly winter weather coming back to lower water temps, extending the winter pattern for a while. Small Redfish schools and scattered fish on the flats, bigger Seatrout in the shallow grass as well as outside off the deeper drop offs, schooling size Trout over the deeper grass flats and edges with mixed spotty bottom. More of a spring like pattern with modest numbers of mullet schools in the area that have moved back from the south with our mild water conditions. Still fishing select size live shrimp as go to bait and small live finger mullet when available, for hunting the flats in search of Redfish and Trout. On one of the last days of 2014 new clients Laszlo and Brittany from Connecticut had a great, first flats fishing experience out with me, good sight fishing conditions helped them catch 5 Redfish with most overslot fish up to 29” and upper slot fish, being good catch and release anglers all fish were sent off swimming. First fish early was Brittany’s................................... Then a fun double hookup from the same school with simultaneous landing the 2 good Reds gave this great CPR catch photo release shot................................ Another new client from Orlando brought his adult kids who were in town for Christmas out shallow fishing with me, catching 5 Reds up to 25”and a bunch of school Trout, Chelsea had bragging rights with the best fish................................... Quite a few nice Trout caught on the boat last few weeks, some on live finger mullet while fishing productive locations, mostly mixed bottom areas showing baitfish, some by casting tailed hooked select shrimp while poling grass flats and shorelines while in searching, hunting mode for fishy spots............................... Another new client Guy brought out family members, all fishermen from Delaware, on a 4 person flats fishing trip on New Years Day, a little tough early this day, catching a few fish , but a strong second half, we ended up catching 7 Redfish to 27”, 3 nice slot Trout and a bunch of school Trout, Reds were caught shallow on shrimp, the better Trout caught on deeper off drop offs with a tiny split shot above the shrimp to get them down. Rick had the hot hand for the morning...................... First time client Darrin from Orlando and his parents had a fun trip a couple days ago, also slow early with just a few fish, we stuck with it catching 6 Redfish up to 23” on the flats near a high water shoreline, mom Joanne was trilled to catch her Red on a live mullet......................... Also catching quite a few school Trout, dad Bill caught his largest ever Seatrout also on a finger mullet.................................. 17. Early winter patterns have arrived to Mosquito Lagoon Florida with an early chilly spell in mid November dropping water temperatures into the upper 50’s during the cold days, now hovering in the low 60’s as air temps are nice and mild with highs some days at 75 to 80’F. The colder water has Redfish starting to school on the flats with winter sight fishing patterns as water gets much clearer as the temp drops. Seatrout are also a winter target species on the lagoon waters, the larger Trout frequent the flats along with Redfish, while most school size Trout are caught along the drop offs edges of holes and sloughs in the backcountry. Jig type artificial lures are good for these deeper water fish, while I use mainly select size live shrimp and small live finger mullet for shallow water Reds and Trout this time of year. Repeat clients from Daytona, mom Kate, dad Fred, and daughter Calle, recently had a great trip with me on the flats, it was a breezy, rainy, chilly morning, but the fish were happy to be biting, we caught 7 Reds up to 29” and 7 Trout, including 5 in the slot, Kate here with her 24” speck as she was the Trout Whisperer this morning........................ Calle had a good hand with Redfish catching a few good ones, here showing off her largest of the trip................ Fred did catch the biggest Red of the morning on his first cast though before letting the ladies take control............. Jean and Jim came on another mixed bag backcountry fishing trip with me, after having a great time last year on a mixed trip with me during their vacation, it was one of the cold mornings driving the fish down into the deep holes, fishing live shrimp, catching school trout, sheepshead, snappers, and the top fish of our trip a beautiful Black Drum caught by Jean................ First time client Nat from Arizona set up a 2 day trip, bringing along dad Roger and his Aunt Vena who is an Edgewater local, first morning was another windy chilly trip on the flats, but we still managed 5 Redfish up to 28” . Second morning they decided to try a mixed bag trip in the Edgewater backcountry, a pretty sunny day with now cold water, fishing live shrimp in the holes and drops, catching a bunch of school Trout, runt size Redfish, and also 8 baby Snook in the mix of different species. Nat’s Red on day 1 was the big fish of the trips......................... Longtime regular local client Donavan from Deland brought his colleague Aubrey along to hunt Redfish on the flats just a few days ago, was a chilly morning so we waited for a 9 AM start to give the fish and fishermen time to warm up a little. Was a great choice as we found a school of Reds at the first spot along a lee side calm shoreline, the fish were cold swimming past the baits on some passes, but eating some shrimp when they felt like it, Aubrey caught a pair of 28”/29” Reds from that school................................ And Donovan caught a few slot size Reds for a total of 7 spot tails for our trip, along with a few fair size Trout blind casting tail hooked shrimp over a little deeper grass flats along the way....................... Paul from Kentucky called me one morning for a same day short notice trip recently, I was able to meet him at mid day for an afternoon trip hunting Redfish, only catching a couple but he checked off a bucket list item of his first Redfish with a 28”er at our first stop.................. 18. AnglersNet.co.uk 's very own Newt and his wife Bobbi came fishing with me for a few days in October, having been with me on many trips before, I always a great fun time fishing with them. The high light of our trips was our Redfish trip on the flats here at Mosquito Lagoon, conditions still being high water we concentrated on shoreline fishing where Reds like to be in flood high water. Our flats trip a big success catch and release on 14 Redfish up to 28". Newt being an artifical lure specialist also caught several Seatrout on soft plastic lures. Here is Bobbi with a good Redfish.......................... And Newt not to be out done with a quality Redfish which took the white soft plastic jerk bait....................... We also had a much fun on afternoon mixed bag backcountry fishing trips, catching Trout, Sheepshead, Jacks, Snapper, and a couple Redfish, Bobbi with a few of the other species we caught........................... I will be looking for ward to fishing with Newt and Bobbi again next year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Water levels have returned to a lower normal after the flood levels of last month here on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon Florida. Redfish can again be found over the spotty bottom, grass edges, flats drop offs, and locations back to a normal water depth of 1 to 2 feet deep. Clarity is improving as water temperatures drop with the seasonal cooling taking place here in the New Smyrna / Daytona Beach / Orlando area. As winter nears, water will become clear and colder through out all of our coastal inland saltwater backcountry, temperatures now around 70’ will continue dropping to winter levels of upper 50’s to low 60’s by years end. Redfish will begin their winter schooling pattern as temps chill and water levels continue lower also during our dry season coupled with prevailing north winds. Bait fish will be less prevalent, moving feeding patterns more to shrimp for the winter months, smaller size baits and lures will be the best bet during the cold water patterns to come which will then be in place until next spring. Amanda, John, and Shawn caught 5 Redfish up to 26” on a breezy day during October, Amanda with one of her fish from the morning............................... Another flood water flats trip with Bryant and Doc from North Carolina, and Darrell from Minnesota was much fun catching 5 Reds to 25” and 2 quality Seatrout including this 26.5” speck landed by Darrell................................. Fred, Connie, and 80 year old Bob had a fun Redfish trip on another breezy fall day catching 10 Reds topped by the 31.5” fish battled by Fred............................ Bob caught a beautiful 9 spot Redfish ................................ 19. Autumn 2014 has arrived to East Central Florida, water temperature dipping into the upper 70’s, some days with a north breeze bringing a little cooler mornings, many schools of fall migrating mullet passing through Mosquito Lagoon on their way south. Inshore migratory game fish such as Jack Crevalle, Bluefish Ladyfish, follow the mullet schools, eating their fill of bait fish as they go. Resident species of Florida saltwater fish such as Redfish and Seatrout, also eat their share of traveling mullet this time of year as the parade of southern swimming bait fish are in the area. The flats of Mosquito Lagoon are my hunting grounds for shallow water redfish year round, “summer patterns” will continue for a little longer in early fall until water temperatures get a bit lower over the next few weeks. Repeat clients Marshall and Athena from Virginia had a great flats trip a short time back catching 9 Redfish on the flats during the early bite, about 10 Seatrout on soft plastic artificials over deeper grass in the mid morning, and even a lifetime first Tarpon from a school of juvenile rolling fish. Both husband and wife each caught a 29” over slot Red...................... And Marshall with his first Tarpon on a DOA CAL lure, he landed this one after jumping a couple others.................... More repeat clients, from Orlando, son Andrew, mom Rachelle, and gramps Jim had a fun Mosquito Lagoon trip with 6 Reds on the flats and 8 Trout on live bait, fishing drop offs. Andrew caught the topper of the trip with a 35” Redfish on a live bait which was prowling the drop off we were Trout fishing along................... First time clients David, Eric, and Rick from Tennessee fished 2 charter days with me. On the flats the first day catching 8 Redfish up to 25”, day 2 having a fun time mixed bag backcountry fishing catching Trout, Mangrove Snapper, and Jack Crevalle, to name a few of the many saltwater fish we always catch on mixed bag trips. David with his largest Red........................ Vic from Orlando did his second flats charter with me, catching a few good Redfish first thing in the morning at our first stop in Mosquito Lagoon......................... I get out on some fun scouting trips, invited by my friend on his boat a few mornings ago, searching for new Redfish spots to return to later with clients, this morning I caught a healthy Snook on a top water lure early morning...................... 20. Summer 2014 is winding down now in September, but the water is still warm, early fall fishing patterns will be coming soon, the annual baitfish migration starting with the first signs of “scout” mullet schools beginning to appear, to be followed by the mass of mullet schools to follow as they head south. September and October are the fall migration months here in coastal East Central Florida including Mosquito Lagoon, New Smyrna Beach, and Daytona Beach. Summer local mullet schools are still in force on the flats of the lagoon however, early mornings stacked up on flats edges making for good target areas for early Redfish and Seatrout targeting. Water levels are up after a good rainy season along with cloudy water in many areas which is normal for late summer, but the water is still somewhat clear for sight fishing on many flats with healthy grass beds. Indian River backcountry mixed bag fishing has been good all summer with most trips up to 15 different species caught. Both Spotted and Silver Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Black Drum, Whiting, Croakers, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Sheepshead, and always a few surprise species caught. My mixed bag trips are a fun easy style of catching with light spin tackle catching large numbers of these different saltwater species, great wildlife viewing also on every trip out with Bottlenose Dolphin, Manatees, and all types of birds. Repeat clients Dr. Jim and Sue brought the grand kids from Pennsylvania out a couple times on mixed bag trips recently and young Vivien had a great battle with this good size Black Drum, grandpa Jim also caught a Drum of the same size.............. I took part in the 2014 CCA Florida Kids tournament a couple weeks ago taking dad Richie from New Smyrna and his 2 young sons, we had a great trip catching several Reds, Bryson won a 2nd place Redfish finish with his largest fish................... And big brother Sawyer also caught a few good Redfish along with a 23” speck which won him a 2nd place Seatrout finish..................... Amanda from Georgia was top fisherwoman on the trip with her repeat client family here with one of the good Reds she caught on their morning.................. A few weeks back Tom and Clay from Delaware fished with me on their first ever flats fishing experience and had a great time catching 8 Redfish with half of them overslot size fish here is Tom with his largest at 31”........................ And Clay with his best of the trip...................... A triple Redfish hookup, sight cast from a cruising school resulted in this triple catch photo, all fish fought and landed at the same time........................ Regular longtime clients Benito and Jason from Orlando had fun on their flats trip, although a tough bite that morning, still catching 5 Redfish including a few of them 27’ to 30” size................ 21. July 2014 has been one busy month with loads of charters and loads of fish, fishing has been great on both my flats fishing Redfish trips and Backcountry mixed bag trips here at Mosquito Lagoon Florida. We have had great sight fishing opportunities on some flats trips with schooling Redfish, such as the trip new client Jody from Georgia arranged with his friend Clint and young sons Estan and Hunter here the boys with a double Redfish shot........................... Jody was not to be out done this day on Seatrout catching this 28” trophy Trout at our first stop of the morning.................... This trip we landed a dozen Reds total topped by Clint’s 27” spot tail, all the Reds sight cast from cruising and tailing schools in shallow water in calm beautiful morning conditions.............. Indian River Backcountry mixed bag fishing has been really good this summer with big numbers of fish on every trip, lots of Speckled and Silver Seatrout, loads of Mangrove Snapper, add in Whiting, Jack Crevalle, sometimes some Sheepshead and Black Drum and who know what surprise fish will come up with 10 to 15 species just about every trip. Great wildlife viewing with Dolphins up close and personal and usually a glimpse of a couple Manatees. Here is Katie with a large Backcountry Seatrout....................... And young Cooper with a good Black Drum he caught while on a family style trip out with his folks from Georgia on one of my trips.................... Kevin from Orlando brought his dad out on a flats fishing trip with me the day after a less than satisfying offshore party boat trip they went on, only to be tickled pink catching this 26” Redfish on the first cast of the morning................ Then dad Frank caught his biggest ever 33” Red at another of my spots that morning.................. Annual July 4th week repeat clients Scott, Stacy, and young Gabe from Clearwater had a great time catching several Redfish on their flats charter, Stacy with her best of the morning............... And Gabe showing off one of his Reds....................... First time client Geoff caught a few nice Reds up to 30”, all sight fished from cruising and waking schools on the grass flats on a perfect calm morning.................... 22. June 2014 fishing has been great here on Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Florida, I have been super busy with many inshore saltwater charter trips the last several weeks, summer pattern Redfishing has been great on the grass flats of The Lagoon, huge schools of mullet baitfish through out the area are shadowed by the Reds and Seatrout, fish can be scattered in and around the shoals of foraging mullet on the shallow flats as well as the edges near drop offs. Early morning can be the best time for Reds before the heat of the day arrives although afternoons can also be good for Redfishing as they are quite tolerant of warmer water temperatures during summer. Charlie from Orlando brought his kids out for a morning flats trip with me catching 6 Redfish including 2 over the slot size at 28” and 27.5”. Bethany caught the largest of the trip. We also caught several good Trout , here is Charlie with his 26” Speck. My Indian River mixed bag trips are fun easy fishing all year long and summer is no exception, catching between 10 and 15 different species most trips, and being visited by great wildlife viewing up close and personal while we are “catching”, with Bottlenose Dolphins and Manatees seen on just about every trip out. Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Croakers, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and always several more species caught, also on many mixed bag trips a Redfish or 2 is not unlikely such as this nice one Connie caught on one of my mixed trips here in Edgewater. Repeat client Roger also from Orlando area brought a couple of his kids on another flats fishing trip last week catching 10 Redfish and 5 keeper size Trout. Josh had the big Red at 36” we sight fished during mid morning with good visibility from a school of about 20 big Reds cruising the flat, casting out in front of the school brought a hook up and singing drag with this big one on light tackle. Roger thought he would have big fish of the day at our very first spot that morning with this 33.5” Redfish from the edge of a flat with a mullet school. Longtime regular summer mixed bag clients, dad Stephen and sons Ben and Sam from Georgia, decided to try a Redfish trip this year and were not disappointed, catching 6 Spot tails up to 27”, here is Ben with a good one. Also regular clients from Orlando brothers Adam and Matt brought a friend and left dad home this time, caught 7 Reds up to 25” and also 15 school size Seatrout on soft plastic artificial lures over deeper grass flats. Adam shows off his largest of the morning. First time clients Marshall and Athena from Virginia hoped to catch a Redfish on their first flats fishing trip, and we had a great time accomplishing the goal with 12 Reds including 3 over slot, plus a few bonus Seatrout. The husband and wife with a double hook up sight cast from a small school on a grass flat edge, a 32” and 28” pair, both safely released after our photo. Marshall had already got his goal early in trip with this 29” Red caught off a sand bar point slough. 23. Summer is almost here in East Central Florida, water temperatures up to 75’, mullet bait schools returning from the south, Redfish scattering out over the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon beginning the warm water pattern flats fishing which I will be pursuing for the next several months targeting Reds and Trout. Indian River backcountry fishing has also been very steady catching, Seatrout, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, and fun jumping Ladyfish to name a few of the many different species we catch on my mixed bag variety trips. Regular client Dr Ed from Ormond Beach called for a last minute afternoon trip recently with his son Matt who caught the largest Trout of the trip on a deep drop off with live shrimp. New client Norbert came over from Orlando with his friend Jason a couple weeks ago and also did a backcountry mixed trip catching all the usual different species on live shrimp with light spin tackle. Jason caught the big one of the morning, another great Seatrout close to an oyster bar and mangrove tree drop off. Even I got in on the Trout action during a fun scouting trip on Mosquito Lagoon invited by my friend Capt Tony, I love it when friends invite me to go fishing with them. We located a few spots holding Reds for our upcoming charters, and catching a couple nice specks on soft plastic artificial lures on grassy drop offs on the edge of the flats. Repeat clients Brian and Calle, students at Stetson University at nearby Deland did another late spring pattern trip with me last week catching Redfish, Seatrout, and most of the other salty species along the way through the Edgewater backcountry. Brian caught his Red holding tight to an oyster bar just inside a creek mouth. Some good size Jack Crevalle have arrived in to the backcountry in the last couple weeks, some times chasing baitfish to the surface blasting white water blow ups, casting bait or lures right into the action can be an instant bent rod and drag pulling, they also prowl the edges of deeper drop offs making double hook ups for drifting a few live shrimp along the edges. Up close and personal Bottlenose Dolphin, Manatees, Osprey, Great Blue Herons, and more wildlife viewing while fishing the inshore saltwater Lagoon and Backcountry waters.
