  1. Spring is a great time for backcountry fishing here in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon Florida. Seatrout is the main target species while fishing the creeks and drop offs here in the “old channel” at Edgewater, Oak Hill, and New Smyrna Beach. The water temperature has warmed to the 70’ mark now in mid April, so the baitfish have begun to return to the area signaling the return to warm water patterns, mullet and glass minnows the main spring baitfish species for the backwaters. Along with Seatrout we are having fast fun light tackle action with lots of Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and always more species also on my backcountry charters. Live shrimp can be the most productive bait for this mixed bag type of catching, but Allison here visiting from Atlanta caught this quality Seatrout on a shad tail jig while out with me with her husband ......... Anglers Net's own and my repeat clients Newt and Bobbi and did 3 afternoon charters with me while here on their Central Florida vacation, catching all the different species that my backwaters have to offer, Newt caught and released the best Trout of the trip on a Gulp shrimp jig....... Bobbi with one of the many of the Seatrout she caught.............. And Bobbi with an unusual Central Florida catch of a hard fighting Permit........ Redfish are always on the target list for Mosquito Lagoon, regular clients Lorin and John had a great flats fishing trip recently with 4 Redfish to 25” and about 25 Trout with a half dozen of the specks in the “slot“ of 15” to 20”............. As water temperatures continue to rise, the summer Mosquito Lagoon flats fishing patterns are returning and Redfish and Seatrout catching shifts to warm water techniques which stay in place all through the summer until next fall, as well as fun easy backcountry mixed bag variety fishing. Summer wildlife viewing while out fishing is always great with Manatees and Bottlenose Dolphin up close and personal, along with always present wide variety of birds. 2. Spring has sprung on Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River here in the Edgewater Backcountry and New Smyrna Beach. Water temps still chilly but on the rise, the spring shrimp run means game fish are focused on them along the channels and Intracoastal Waterway. The arriving schools of Blues, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish from their wintering area of south Florida has great fun fast action on my mixed bag backcountry and Intracoastal trips this time of year. Our local Seatrout, Redfish, Sheepshead, and Black Drum are also hungry for shrimp as the water warms after a chilly winter this 2014. As always I am also taking clients on the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon after Redfish and Seatrout, in the spring the schooling pattern continues but with smaller schools and some single fish as higher water levels and warming water temperatures will have the Redfish beginning to scatter out some. On a recent solo flats fishing charter, Robert a repeat client from Daytona had a great time sight fishing a 26” Red as well as several good Seatrout on a beautiful pretty Mosquito Lagoon morning on a live finger mullet from a early morning school of fish pushing a big wake in the calm conditions. Also catching a few good Trout blind casting tail hooked select shrimp near sand holes in the grass. On another recent Mosquito Lagoon flats charter, returning clients Richard and Pat from Virginia had less than perfect weather on a drizzly morning, still having a blast catching 4 Redfish with a couple over the slot size at 28” and also a few nice Trout casting tail hooked shrimp, top water retrieving over the grass. Just a couple days ago, repeat client from Canada, grandpa Conrad brought his son and 2 grandsons on a mixed bag backcountry trip, we had non stop action from Bluefish and Jacks on free lined live shrimp, Seatrout were also biting with young Cale catching the largest........ New clients Skip and Brant from the Carolinas had a really fun charter catching about 40 Redfish plus a couple Trout, 30 of the Reds were fun little guys at 1 to 2 lbs, with the other 10 slot sized up to 24”, all caught with live shrimp on the flats, was a windy morning so not sight fished, but picking mixed bottom locations on the flats, Skip caught the best one.......... Having a couple fun fly fishing charters recently, here is Vic from Pennsylvania with a hard fighting Bluefish, spring time can have fast fly action along the Intracoastal with eager and fun to catch Blues, Jacks, and Ladyfish. Vic was using a weighted red and white “Savedow Bluefish Fly” (-: Father and son Robert and Rob here for the Daytona 500 also caught some Reds and Trout with me on the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon. 3. A mostly chilly pattern has developed during this winter keeping water temperatures cold in the mid to upper 50’s as of now in mid February here in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area. Redfish are schooled up, making for fun sight fishing in the clear cold water, select size live shrimp can be the best sight casting bait this time of year. We have also been catching some good Reds along with Seatrout on live finger mullet on the grass flats when the schools are a little more spooky, making for a tough challenge to get them to eat a cast shrimp when they are already nervous. In that case we will set up shop close to cruising pods of Redfish, waiting in ambush with our baits already in place near the travel path of the fish. Such was the case a few days ago when new Edgewater residents Bob and Beth did a morning trip with me to Mosquito Lagoon, here Bob with one of the 2 Seatrout at 24” each he caught on live fingers near a grazing mullet school, the pair also caught a few more “slot sized” Trout************* *********Along with a couple Redfish, Beth with her 26” spottail caught with a live bait out of a cruising school. Chad, John, and Cheryl from New York State recently had a great fun trip with me on a cold morning catching 18 fish on the flats, 9 Redfish and 9 Seatrout most mid to upper slot size fish, Aunt Cheryl was trilled to catch the largest Trout of the trip, gloves and all************* *******And son Chad with one of the good Specks he caught. My Indian River Backcountry mixed bag trips are always fun easy catching lots of different species of saltwater fish, winter time Seatrout, school size Redfish, Sheepshead, Snapper, and Bluefish, as spring gets closer fun fighting Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish will be joining the party. Every trip out we see Dolphins up close and personal, and many different species of birds all through the waterway. 4. A mix of temperatures so far this January 2014 here in East Central Florida, some chilly periods of 30’s to 40’s at night, then a few days of warm weather with days in the mid 70’s to 80 degrees. Water temperatures staying in the mid to upper 50’s as of now in mid Jan. Live shrimp and finger mullet are our main baits for shallow water Redfish, jig heads with Gulp shrimp the choice for deeper holes and sloughs off the flats. Schooling fish are the winter norm in the chilly winter water on Mosquito Lagoon. In the backcountry on cold days the winding creeks with deep holes are target areas dropping baits into the pretty deep green colored holes. Early winter a couple weeks ago one of the fun trips I had with regular clients from Deland Florida, Lorin and brother Mark, Chuck and son Charlie caught 6 Redfish up to 28” on the flats and a dozen Trout fishing jigs. Charlie was all smiles after catching his 27” Red............... And dad Chuck with the big fish of the trip at 28”. Terrance from Orlando brought his girlfriend Kara along with me to achieve a goal of his to “sight fish” a Redfish on the flats, we accomplished the goal early with Terrance casting his shrimp to a pair of Reds swimming right in front of the boat catching this oversize 29” Redfish, also catching 2 more before we were done at 24” and 26”. Brock and Lars had a great father /son weekend for New Years, coming up from Delray Beach, Florida to fish Mosquito Lagoon for a couple days, our trip was on a breezy afternoon with tough conditions, but we managed to catch 4 Redfish up to 25” by Lars..................... And dad Brock caught the other 3 Reds claiming top fisherman spot with a fun victory challenge. As always my Edgewater backcountry mixed bag fishing trips are fun easy catching with winter fish, Seatrout, school size Redfish, Sheepshead, Bluefish, and Black Drum like this nice one caught by Don who brought his granddaughter Ashlyn out for a fun trip with me last week. 5. Getting ready for Christmas and the New Year of 2014 but still fishing as I do all year long. The anticipation of all the different seasons of the year along with the fishing patterns which change with the calendar here in the Mosquito lagoon area make New Years my favorite holiday. As winter arrives the cold water pattern begins, highlighted with schooling Redfish here on the flats and Seatrout schools on the drop offs, a bonus can be the large “gator” Trout which love to be in the shallowest water they can find on the flats this time of year. Sight fishing the schooling Reds in crystal clear water is a winter treat, words can’t describe getting to see schools of 50 to 500 fish swimming as a group in front of you, in low light conditions watching for the tell tale wakes of the school pushing in 1 or 2 feet of water, then as the sun gets higher the chance to seeing the fish moving along the bottom. Our late fall pattern has been a fun one also with several good charter trips the last couple weeks. Andy from Wisconsin brought friend Leslie and son Spencer with me on a recent morning charter catching 11 Redfish, Spencer caught and released the largest, a cool 9 spot “over the slot” 27.5” Red. Leslie had quite the trill catching her first ever Reds on our trip. My Edgewater Indian River mixed bag trips are always fun easy fishing with usually big numbers of fish, winter catches being Seatrout, Redfish, Sheepshead, Bluefish, Black Drum, and more, on most trips we catch 10 or more species making for part of the fun not knowing what fish will come up next from the channels of the backcountry. On a recent mixed trip regular client Ty from Atlanta brought his 2 sons along, Nick hooked up at our first spot with this 29.5” Red on a light tackle “trout” rod making for an epic battle with the 10 plus pound fish, making him all smiles for his photo before release of the “over the slot” Red. The trio went on to catch 65 other fish during the morning, school trout, small reds, blues, and a great pompano for dinner. Ty also did a solo flats Redfish trip after the boys had to get back to Georgia, catching 4 Reds including this 24”er caught right at sunrise on Mosquito Lagoon. 85 year old Bill and son in law Ed braved a windy day on the flats, we were rewarded with 5 Redfish, we helped Bill battle his 27.5” spot around the boat a couple times for the photo and release, another “over the slot” fishy. Steven did a recent solo flats trip catching 3 Reds up to 25” and 4 Trout up to 25” as seen in his pics below. On one of the windiest days I have been out in quite a while Kevin from Savannah GA just had to try it as was his only day here. Tough catching in 30 knot winds, hiding behind some islands we caught a jumbo 26” Seatrout. 6. Having a fun fall of fishing here on Mosquito Lagoon Florida in November 2013, Redfish and Seatrout catching in the autumn pattern with high water, clear on the grass flats, still a little cloudy in some backcountry areas with a mud bottom. Water temperatures in the middle to upper 60’s, cooling off a little but not yet winter chilly. A few small schools of reds starting to form, but still plenty of single fish. Shoreline areas are still a good bet with the high water, but as of a few days ago noticing slightly lowering water level out on the open lagoon area again making more grass flats a favorable depth of 12” to 20” which is “Redfish depth” in my neighborhood. Still baiting with mullet mostly, throwing topwater lures and weedless jerkbaits in the early morning low light conditions. A recent charter trip with 3 generations from Indiana, grandpa Ken treated son Joe and grandson Danny to fishing with me. All caught some Reds along with Trout, of course young Danny caught the largest Redfish........ And grandpa also caught a nice one. Vic a new Edgewater resident had a great time on a solo trip a couple weeks ago, catching 6 Reds including this 25” spottail . Just a couple days ago I hosted a 2 boat charter with a repeat client and friends out for a bachelor party fishing trip before his friends wedding. On my boat we caught 7 Redfish up to 24” caught by Doug here with his fish. And I got to go fly fishing recently invited by a friend on his boat, after push poling him around for a while it was my turn on the bow, and in short order had a Redfish in front of me, then hooked up on my 6 weight TFO outfit. A beautiful 10 spot fishy. Edgewater backcountry mixed bag fishing is still in fall pattern with lots of variety and fast action from Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead, Jacks, Ladyfish, and starting to catch some small Redfish in the back waters which will be around through the winter. Most mixed trips we catch 10 or more species usually with some surprises such as this cute micro Snook from a recent trip. Mixed bag trips are great for kids and family groups wanting some easy fast catching action and great wildlife viewing seeing Dolphins and lots of sea birds up close and personal on every trip. 7. October 2013 feels great with cooler mornings, nice clear water in the Intracoastal Waterway, and clearing water on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Time again for sight fishing Redfish as the water clears. Very high water calls for sight fishing tight to flooded shorelines in the backcountry islands, and over grass flats now flooded which have been almost dry during the low water this past summer. A few small schools of Reds starting to form as the water temperatures cool down and days shorten. Live finger mullet, cut mullet, DOA shrimp and new penny color jerkbaits are my usual fall Redfish baits. Repeat client Russ and his 11 year old daughter Chloe from Orlando came fishing with me recently catching several Redfish and Chloe was trilled to catch her first ever Reds. Regular client Craig also from Orlando brought his sons to fish with me on the flats a couple weeks ago catching 9 Redfish plus a bonus 21” Seatrout. Here is Matthew with his largest Red of the morning. And brother Adam with one of the Redfish he caught on their trip. Edgewater Backcountry mixed bag fishing has been great with the seasonal cooler , clear water the fish have been biting , on a mixed trip a couple mornings ago regular annual clients Jeff and Bonnie from Iowa caught 16 different species of saltwater fish on their trip, including Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead, Whiting, Pompano, Jacks, Ladyfish, etc, etc. My mixed bag trips are great for kids and family groups wanting some easy fast catching action and great wildlife viewing seeing Dolphins and lots of sea birds up close and personal on most every trip out. This is fun light tackle fishing with live shrimp baits. Regular clients Janet and Teresa from North Carolina had a great time catching lots of Florida fish with me last week on a mixed bag trip, here is Teresa with a 10 lb. Edgewater backcountry Black Drum. 8. Autumn is getting close as mid September 2013 is here, water temps down a little bit, and starting to clear on the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon. The mullet run is beginning with schools of finger mullet swimming south down the Indian River channel on their seasonal journey towards the south Florida wintering grounds of all the subtropical coastal fish species. We will be taking advantage of the small mullet by “matching the hatch” using them for Redfish and Seatrout baits during the fall months. Sight fishing will again be part of our routine techniques while flats fishing, as the water continues to clear with lower temperatures. Some of my fun late summer trips include the 7 Redfish morning with Ross, Kyle, and “top rod” Matthew seen here with his 24” Seatrout And showing off his catch of the largest Redfish on the trip at 31.5”. Brad and son Colby from north Florida went with me first week of September catching 8 Redfish including the 30” spot tail caught by 11 year old Colby being his largest lifetime fish so far. A family reunion trip had relatives meeting up from Virginia, Orlando, and Stuart, Florida going on a fun flats trip with me. Sisters Amy and Katie each had the bragging rights by catching the biggest Reds of the trip at 28” and 29”. Very longtime regular client Don from North Carolina did a solo trip last week catching 5 Redfish up to this 29”er and a 22” Seatrout. Edgewater Backcountry mixed bag fishing trips have also been lots of fun and will continue to be through the fall months, a more easy going fishing style, catching high numbers of different saltwater species on light tackle. Most mixed trips catching 8 to 10 or more species including Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and sometimes even a nice Redfish or Black Drum. These trips are great for kids and family groups wanting some easy fast catching action and great wildlife viewing seeing Dolphins and Manatees up close and personal on most every trip out. 9. Summer 2013 continues to provide great fishing on Mosquito Lagoon Florida. Water levels still remain low, keeping our fish location pattern the same through now being mid August. Redfish have been my main target species, catching from half dozen to a dozen or more good fish on every trip so far this summer. Most all fish being from 24” to 31” or about 4 to 10 pounds. We have also had many quality Seatrout caught on the flats, as the larger Trout do like to hang out in the same locations as our shallow water Reds. Ed from Georgia brought his sons Zak and Cole with me in late July and caught 5 reds to 31” plus a bonus 25” Trout. Zak was top fisherman with the big Trout and Red. Also in late July, Mike and Lori brought the kids out with me catching 6 Redfish up to 28” and another 25” Seatrout with young Jack holding the hot hand. Keith and family from Tipton Georgia caught 12 Redfish on their flats fishing trip, here is Amanda with a good Red. The Murrey family met up for a central Florida vacation from as far away as North Carolina and North Dakota, having a great fun trip with me catching 14 Redfish to 30’ plus a couple good trout thrown in. Joseph here with one of the Redfish. Father and son, Greg and Cameron here on vacation from California went with me in early August on their first ever Redfish trip, catching 8 reds between 24” and 31”. Here is Cam with his best Red. New Edgewater resident Bobby went on a solo trip with me first week of August and had a great time catching 8 Redfish up to 30” seen here in his pic. Every trip out we are seeing all kinds of nature and wildlife up close and personal, we are seeing Dolphins and Manatees on every summer time trip, as well as many different bird species including the beautiful pink Rosette Spoonbill. I never get tired of seeing the greatness of the outdoors no matter how many years I have had the privilege of fishing and living right in the middle of it all. 10. The water levels have been extremely low this July 2013 here on Mosquito Lagoon Florida, this is the time when you can best learn to navigate the shallow lagoon area. The channels and sloughs are the only runways deep enough for most boats to travel. Some grass flats which normally have a foot or more of water over them are dry, large areas of some flats are seen with the grass at the laying on the surface while some are seen as slicks telling you these places are very shallow. You can however see Redfish and Seatrout tailing in this shallow grass, making for a challenging exercise to get close enough to them to present a bait or lure right on their nose. I have had many great trips in the last couple weeks, repeat client Scott from Tampa, FL brought 8 year old Gabe with me to hunt Redfish and Trout, catching 6 Reds up to 27” and a 23” Speck, Gabe here with his best fish of the morning And dad Scott with his 27” Redfish. David and Rhonda from Alabama came out with their 2 sons for a morning trip to the flats last week, great morning with 9 Redfish up to 30” in size. Fourteen year old Ben here with a good Red And his 17 year old brother Griffin with another beautiful multi spotted Mosquito Lagoon Redfish. Cody , Jason, and Jay from Georgia had a great fun time on their trip catching 6 Redfish up to 30” plus a 25” Seatrout here with Jay. Jerry and Donna from Pennsylvania also had a super Redfish trip with 10 Reds and Jerry here with his catch and released 27” Seatrout Double up picture of husband and wife with a couple of the Reds from their morning all of which they chose to release. Melissa and Matt from Georgia brought the kids with me catching 12 Redfish up to 28”, Melissa had a great time catching this Red. Every trip out we are seeing all kinds of nature and wildlife up close and personal, we see Dolphins and Manatees on most every summer time trip, as well as many different bird species. 11. Redfish have been our main target on Mosquito Lagoon Florida so far this early summer of 2013, early morning trips before the heat and afternoon rain showers. I have had many families out on trips the last couple weeks. Jeff from Georgia brought his kids out with me to hunt a few Reds, here is Leslie with her best fish of our trip a 31” Redfish she caught and released on light spinning tackle. And brother Jeremy with his 26” Seatrout we saw tailing, sight caught and released to keep making more baby Trout for next years catching. Longtime regular client John with his girls Elizabeth and Kate from Ohio were with me while other family and friends were out with a couple of my other guide friends on our 3 boat charter trip recently. Elizabeth here with her 31” Redfish caught and released. And Kate with another good Red, on our boat we caught 6 good Redfish this morning. Repeat client Dave from Illinois fished with his ladies on a fun morning trip last week, wife Debby and daughter Loren with a double header Redfish. They caught several Reds up to 26”. New clients Brad and Dovey from Texas brought the kids out for a trip with me, they had a great trip catching 9 Redfish up to 29”. Dovey’s pic with her best fish of the trip. And young Conner caught the most fish, here all smiles showing his best Red of the morning. A nature viewing show is part of every fishing trip, as wildlife abounds here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, we see Dolphins up close and personal and Manatees on most every summer trip, as well as many different bird species on every trip keeps it interesting for the nature lovers such as myself. 12. June 2013 is here, school is out for the kids, the busy summer vacation and charter fishing season has arrived here at Daytona Beach, New Smyrna, and Orlando Florida. We will be out often the next few months chasing fish on Mosquito Lagoon. Redfish are in their warm water pattern, most schools have broken up, singles, pairs, and small groups are the summer norm. Water levels rising as we are getting some seasonal afternoon rain showers, and cloudier water means baits and lures with either scent or sound for fish to home in on. My flats trips this time of year are a usually a mix of poling and hunting the shallow grass flats for Reds then also fishing edges, drop offs, and holes with live pigfish when available for Seatrout. Regular client grandpa Bruce brought his son Dan and grandson Chris on a flats trip with me a couple weeks ago catching a half dozen good Reds. Grandpa caught the largest of the trip, an over slot 28” fish making him all smiles for the camera before it’s release. And son Dan pictured here with his largest Redfish of the trip caught at our first stop early in the morning making for cool lighting on his photo. Just a couple days ago Dr Tim, wife Cathy, and the kids came with me on one of my Edgewater Backcountry mixed bag trips, catching several different species including Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Ladyfish, Jack Crevalle, and topped off with this beautiful multi spot Redfish caught by Cathy. Also here more a couple more Seatrout and Redfish with happy clients from a few other recent trips. Always a great nature experience on every trip to add to the fun of chasing the fish, Dolphins up close and personal on just about every trip out, and a great chance of Manatee sightings on most summer trips also, as well as many different bird species on every trip keeps it interesting for the nature lovers such as myself. 13. Summer 2013 is knocking on the door, water temperatures on the rise, subtropical baitfish and birds such as the beautiful pink Rosette Spoonbill have come back from the south. Big schools of mullet have returned to the flats of Mosquito Lagoon Florida, afternoon rain showers are beginning, live bait pigfish are getting big enough to be caught in nets, all these signs say summer fishing patterns have arrived. We will be prowling the pristine healthy grass flats on the hunt for Redfish and Seatrout, at times using the mullet schools to point the way to shallow water game fish which hang with the baitfish because of food such as shrimp and baby crabs disturbed from their hiding spots by the rooting mullet digging algae from the grass. Also searching grass edges and mixed bottom which are favorite under water locations for lagoon fish. New client Chris came all the way from Colorado to fish with me for 2 mornings last week, he was rewarded with great fun fishing trips, all catch and release for the traveling angler, here he is with a fantastic 28” Seatrout, and Chris with his largest Redfish at 30” of the 6 he caught on his visit, also catching uncountable fun Ladyfish and Jack Crevalle on the mixed bag backcountry part of his charters. Just a few mornings ago, longtime regular client Dr. Ray and son Jeff from Ohio came on a flats fishing charter, Jeff with his biggest ever Seatrout at 25”, and Dr Ray with his biggest ever Redfish of 30” weighing about 10 lbs, plus catching a few more Reds on their trip, I love helping my clients catching some of their best fish, and taking the pictures for them to remember forever. Manatees are back in force as usual for summer around here on the Florida Indian River, as we see them and Dolphins up close and personal on just about every trip out, along with great bird watching on every trip as a plus while we are busy chasing fish. Summer is a great time for my Backcountry Mixed Bag trips also for a much easier kind of sure thing catching, about 10 different species of fish most trips, most being Trout, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish, and always several other surprise species caught. Here is regular client Matt with a 24” Trout caught early morning with the rising sun over his shoulder while on a mixed bag trip a couple weeks ago. 14. After a very mild mid winter, March arrived with chilly winter conditions in east central Florida, dropping water temps back into the upper 50’s for much of the month. Spring time is great for backcountry mixed bag fishing, returning from south Florida are the schools of inshore migrating gamefish eager to feed as they make their way north on an annual trip from winter haunts, following the rising water temperature change and ending up by summer as far north as the Outer Banks NC area. Joining our resident backcountry Spotted Seatrout, Redfish, Sheepshead, and Black Drum will be larger numbers of Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, and Ladyfish making for lots of fun rod bending. Light tackle free line fishing with live shrimp and soft plastic DOA lures are my main technique for fast action. Samantha pictured with a good Seatrout while on her family’s mixed bag trip with me. Mosquito Lagoon grass flats are our location of choice for hunting Redfish, now in a transition between winter and summer pattern for Reds, schools will be breaking up into smaller groups and some single fish as the water warms now that April has arrived. Larger amounts of bait fish also returning from the south will be targets of our attention as Reds and Trout have a habit of shadowing mullet on the grass flats as the baitfish root in the grass for algae, thus displacing shrimp, minnows and other easy pickings for the shallow water game fish. Local clients Derrick and daughter Katlin pictured, were with me recently on a chilly March morning hunting the flats catching a few good Reds and also a couple quality Trout. We have great wildlife viewing during every trip here on the Florida Indian River, with Dolphins up close and personal, Manatee sightings on most trips, not uncommon to see a Bald Eagle soaring above, and a large variety of wading birds and Osprey every day. 15. We are having an early Spring 2013 here on Mosquito Lagoon Florida. Februarys water temperatures have been mostly in the mid to upper 60s, with a few colder days mixed in. Spring things happening early include Manatee sightings, and Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and Mullet coming up from the south. With the water still cool, most of the Redfish are still in schools, but many are broken up into smaller groups on the warmer days. Live finger mullet have been one of my best baits when available, also live shrimp, soft plastic DOA shrimp, jerk baits, and CAL jigs. Local clients Rick, son Ethan, and friend Mike had a great morning recently with small schools of Reds running along a beautiful Palm Tree lined shoreline with mirror like water, they caught and released 6 Reds up to the 29er caught by young Ethan. http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab117/CaptMichaelSavedow/March2013EthanRed_zpsf6773b4b.jpg And a happy Mike with his 28 Redfish caught on a finger mullet from the small schools we could see cruising along this great Old Florida shoreline. http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab117/CaptMichaelSavedow/March2013RedMike_zps5b161bbf.jpg Backcountry mixed bag trips have also been great action with the early return of Jacks and Ladys joining Seatrout, Sheepshead, Bluefish, a few Black Drum, and other saltwater fish, catching at least 10 or so species of saltwater fish on most mixed trips. Very fun easy fishing with light tackle and live shrimp baits. Wildlife viewing is constant all around our area, with Dolphins up close and personal and great bird life on every trip out. Newt and Bobby from AnglersNet came to Florida and fished with me 3 afternoons last week and had a great time catching lots of different species including a couple nice Black Drum caught by Bobby as seen in this photo. http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/ab117/CaptMichaelSavedow/March2013BobbiDrum_zps5bbf6378.jpg MY BOAT COMFORTABLY ACCOMMODATES 1 TO 4 ANGLERS Located close to DAYTONA BEACH, NEW SMYRNA BEACH, ORLANDO, KISSIMMEE, DISNEY WORLD, SPACE COAST, COCOA BEACH, EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA. 16. Winter 2013 has so far been mostly mild to warm with a few chilly days mixed in here on Mosquito Lagoon in East Central Florida. Water temps have ranged from mid to upper 50s to the mid 60s F, in some ways more of an early spring fishing pattern during the warmer days. Many of the Redfish schools holding a smaller number of fish than would be the case during a cold winter, which would have a smaller number of very large schools roaming the flats here in the North Lagoon near Oak Hill. Mild winter baits we are using are live shrimp, live finger mullet, cut mullet, Gulp shrimp, and shad tail jigs. On some days with light breezes, Redfish have been tailing in the shallow grass making for great sight fishing targets, use a soft landing bait placed just beyond your target and skim the shrimp or bait of choice along the surface allowing it to quietly settle next to the fish which is rooting for food in the grass. Here is young Katlin with her biggest Red as she out fished her dad and uncle on a fun trip which they caught 5 Reds and several Seatrout early in January. Eleven year old David sight cast this Red from schooling fish on a beautiful slick calm morning while on a trip with me by his dad and grandfather. We caught a few more from the very visible schools which were cruising around in front of us as I poled the boat in position for the guys to cast their shrimp in front of groups of 20 to 50 Redfish, a wonderful sight to see. After the breeze picked up we targeted some deeper drop offs with artificial jigs and caught about a dozen more smaller Reds and about 30 Seatrout. Gary brought his son Sam and friend Parker shown here with his best Redfish of the morning, the trio catching 6 Reds on the flats, then approx 50 mostly smaller Trout on artificals. My mixed bag trips in the Edgewater Backcountry of north Mosquito Lagoon are always fun with fast action from many different species of saltwater fish, also Seatrout and Reds as on the flats, but added in the mix are Bluefish, Sheepshead, Drum, Ladyfish, Jacks, and more. Most trips we catch up to 10 species making it very entertaining for this easy going type of fishing. Wildlife viewing is constant all around our area, with Dolphins and great bird life on every trip out. Here is a great photo I took last week of an adult Bald Eagle and a juvenile hanging out, up in an old dead tree close to a fishing hole we were in. 17. On the afternoon trip, we will probably be fishing the backcountry area of New Smyrna to Edgewater, Seatrout and Bluefish can make up the most bites, however other possible catches include Redfish, Sheepshead, Black Drum, mabye Ladyfish and Jack Crevalle depenfing on water temps at that time. If we also get to do a morning flats fishing trip the main target would be redfish and seatrout.
  18. Welcome to 2013, we have had a great year of fishing here on Mosquito Lagoon Florida, ending with a fun December, winter cold has set in, water temp has been 55”F in the open water and lower on the flats in the morning. Our sunny pretty winter days are prime sight fishing with clear water and schooling shallow water Redfish, select size live shrimp being my bait of choice for sight casting Reds. Seatrout are also schooled up in winter, difference being many of the Trout schools are in deeper water on drop offs and in slough holes, artificial lures work great for them, jigs with Gulp shrimp or soft plastic tails to get it on the bottom where the fish are in cold water. Here is young Ethan with a great 29” Redfish he caught first thing in the morning last week, sight cast from a school we were watching swim around in front of us at our first stop. Here you get to see me as my clients made me pose with this nice Red because I hooked him from atop my poling platform and handed the rod off to the customer to reel in. Brothers Alex and Zach each caught a few nice Reds along with their dad Fred on the fun family trip when the 3 of them went with me a couple weeks ago. A cool 7 spot Redfish caught by a bundled up lady client on a chilly morning. And Stan with his best Trout on a charter trip which Larry and him caught several good reds and a few nice Trout. Mixed bag fishing trips are also always fun here in the Edgewater Backcountry, winter pattern mostly with Trout, a few Redfish, usually lots of Bluefish, with the chance of a few Sheepshead or Black Drum, and usually a couple other species in the mix. 19. Early winter like conditions have arrived this November 2012 on Mosquito Lagoon Florida, on yesterday mornings charter trip water temp was 57’ to 61’ F through the morning on the flats I was fishing, Redfish have begun to school and the water is clearing. Although water levels remain high, prevailing winter north winds will cause levels to drop. Live shrimp, finger mullet, and gulp shrimp lures will be my mainstay baits as winter approaches. Schooling Redfish and Seatrout will be found along the edges of grass flats where the deeper sand sloughs meet shallow grass, some types of sea grasses will thin out with cold water making some flats cleaner on the bottom with only patchy grass spots. Schools of Reds will come up shallow especially on pretty sunny days warming the skinny water just a little. Here is Pete with a great Seatrout caught on a trip out with me a couple weeks ago. And yet another jumbo Seatrout caught by client Doug on a mornings charter which he and friend Jim shown with one of the several good Redfish they caught earlier in the month before the cold set in. Mixed bag fishing trips are always fun here in the Edgewater Backcountry, winter pattern mostly with Trout, a few Redfish, Bluefish, Sheepshead, Black Drum, and usually a couple other species in the mix. Here is Zach with a good Redfish caught on a live shrimp along with a bunch of Trout while on a backcountry mixed family charter with his dad and brother recently. 20. Fishing has been great here on Mosquito Lagoon this October 2012, water temperatures have dropped, reading 73’F a couple days ago, as the water becomes clearer moving towards winter, sight fishing the flats will only improve even more. Redfish and Seatrout will begin to gather into their winter schools. But now we still have early fall conditions, many schools of finger mullet still moving through the Indian River heading south with the baitfish migration. Bait of fresh cut mullet, live finger mullet and pigfsh has been my mainstay this month, as winter arrives the main bait will be select live shrimp and more artificials being used in the clear water. Here are young sisters Aiyana and Callista each with a great Redfish they caught out with me on one of my backcountry trips with their parents recently. And repeat client 83 year old Bob with one of the several Redfish he caught with me one morning this month. Here is Jeff with his biggest Seatrout caught on a morning which we had several other nice Trout along with a few good Redfish with his friend on their trip out with me a couple weeks ago. A few more pics of happy clients with good Redfish caught with me here on Mosquito Lagoon during October. 21. Autumn 2012 has arrived, the long hot Florida summer behind us, cooler mornings feel great as we get on the water as the sun is rising. Redfish and Seatrout catching has been great the last few weeks, as well as mixed bag fishing in the backcountry waters here on Mosquito Lagoon. Mixed type fishing can produce Trout and Reds also, but with lots of Jack Crevalle , Ladyfish, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, and more on most trips. The mixed fishing is an easier type of fishing with lots of bites and constant action. Flats fishing for Redfish is a more challenging type of fishing, sometimes as much hunting as fishing. The pay off is worth it when you hook up with a Mosquito Lagoon Redfish. Here is young Tanvi with her great Redfish, one of several caught on a recent trip her family took with me. Check out this cool 16 spot Redfish we caught on a trip a few days ago, it was released unharmed to maybe be caught again another day. As we are out on the beautiful natural setting of Mosquito Lagoon catching fun saltwater fish and enjoying the great outdoors, we will be seeing lots of wildlife up close and personal close to the boat with Dolphins and many different bird species on every trip. On many trips we also see Manatees this time of year which can swim right up close to the boat for a good look. This photo with a young man and his hard fighting Jack Crevalle caught on one of my family type mixed bag trips, as well as a few more photos of Redfish caught on my boat the last couple weeks. 22. We do catch some Redfish on fly, see my website for several pictures of fly caught, sight cast Redfish, our Seatrout are different fish from fresh water trout, just look similar, they are in the same "family" as Redfish
  23. School is starting, fall is coming next month, the end of another summer here on Mosquito Lagoon Florida. The beginning of the slower tourist season means less boat traffic, cooling water temperatures, and I am looking forward to the autumn fishing pattern to start. This last month has been challenging at times, August heat along with the cloudy water brought on by heavy rain early in the summer, but we have had many great Redfish & Seatrout trips fishing the grass flats, slough holes, & flats edges with live bait & cut mullet during this cloudy water pattern. Here is young Ryan with 1 of the 3 “top of the slot” Redfish he caught while out on one of my trips with his dad recently. Here is a photo from last weekend of me and young Bryson with the 24” Seatrout he caught while out with me & his dad, my friend Richie, during the CCA Youth Inshore Classic tournament which won first place Trout in the under 10 year old division. More photos below of Mosquito Lagoon Redfish and Seatrout from trips the last few weeks. Looking forward to fall mixed bag fishing trips again in the backcountry of New Smyrna Beach & Edgewater as the migrating inshore game fish like Trout, Bluefish, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, & more return to our area on their south bound migration soon. As we are out catching fun saltwater fish and enjoying the great outdoors here on beautiful Mosquito Lagoon we will be seeing lots of wildlife up close and personal near the boat with Dolphins, Manatees, and many different bird species on every trip also. 24. July 2012 is winding down here on Mosquito Lagoon and we are having another fun summer of fishing here in East Central Florida. Lots of Redfish and Seatrout catching during the last several weeks. Our water levels rose very high and have fallen back low again after Tropical Storm Debby sat over the area for almost a week last month, giving us a 5 day rain event, leaving in her wake a cloudy water fishing pattern. Live and cut bait has been the best bet for catching our target species in the low visibility conditions. With the low water again after a few weeks of very little rainfall since Debby, targeting edges off the flats, depression holes, & sloughs has been the primary locations to fish. Here is a photo of young Casey with one of several redfish caught during her family’s charter with me recently. Many times we catch some of the largest Seatrout of the year while fishing for Reds here on the grass flats, like this 30” Speck which weighed 9 lbs caught by my client Joe on the first day of a 2 day charter. On day 2, Joe, Tony, & young Landon caught over a dozen Redfish, pictured here with a triple. More photos of clients with their fish from charters during the last few weeks. During the summer we see Manatees on most every trip as they have come back with a great population rise thanks to boaters awareness to be careful of these impresive slow moving marine mammals. As we are out catching fun saltwater fish and enjoying the great outdoors here on beautiful Mosquito Lagoon we will be seeing lots of wildlife up close and personal near the boat with Dolphins and many different bird species on every trip also.
