  1. thanks, i didnt mean casters and chopped worm seperately but together, like the match people do. Thanks will try binding it with a little groundbait or a few pellets maybe
  2. I want to use the chopped worm and caster method soon but i dont pole fish. Are there any other ways to use this method apart from cupping it in- feeder, catapult?? Please explain if/how you use chopped worm without pole cups. Thanks
  3. Ive always wondered how people fish big rivers such as the Thames. When i see a big river like the Thames on telly or whatever it always makes me wonder just how people fish them. I mean it must be so wide that you can only cast so far, it must be so deep that it must be impossible to fish dead bottom with a float or pole rig, and with such strong currents how do you tell when you have a bite? Do you leave these large stretches of the river alone and fish smaller tributarys? And im guessing you cant walk through the middle of London and cast in, there must be limited areas? Ive never really done a lot of river fishing, and what i have done has been on very small rivers, so just out of curiosity could you please explain the methods, tactics, tackle etc that are needed to fish large rivers. Please inform a curious fisherman! Thanks
  4. I want to freeze maggots but i hear if done incorrectly they can get freezer burn? Can you please tell me the simplest ways to prevent this. Thanks
  5. Could you please tell me what is the best way to fish for roach, perch, bream in colder temperatures? Also if you dont mind, any advice on winter canal carp also please. General info on methods, baits and tackle strength for winter canal fishing would be appreciated. thanks
  6. ok thanks, i am the opposite, never had much luck with lob-worms!
  7. You know those little redworms that wriggle like crazy once hooked, you find them in the compost heap, well ive used them a couple of times for perch and had some success but not thought much of it. But recently whilst looking thorough a fishing book, in the bait section it quoted 'if i could only have one bait for carp it would be the red-worm as they are the closest thing to resembling their main diet, bloodworm'. This got me thinking, what else would they be good for? What luck have you had with these worms, info please
  8. thermal leggings, wooly army issue socks, wellies, padded jacket, wooly hat. Cant wear gloves as its too hard to tie hooks and things. That is in the dead of winter, when its at its coldest and im ledgering so dont get any heat from walking around. I also wear several shirts haha. What do you wear?
  9. ok thanks, have you had any luck with redworms as well though?

    Floaters

how did you float it with a real piece?? did the foam pop up the sweetcorn to the surface?? If so i might try that next summer
  11. Could anybody give me some advice please, i am going to start targeting canal carp in a small canal, there are many under 5lb and quite a few up to about 15lb. There are a fair few in there but i dont know how to target them, especially now the water temperatures are cooling. Any info on methods, baits, tackle strength and location would be appreciated. Cheers, dd
  12. I was thinking the other day, what would be the best bait for catching larger perch, roach and carp in a canal. Something natural but not specific to just one species. Worms would be the obvious choice, i was thinking of a couple of redworm or brandlings legered on a size 16. Anybody had much luck with redworms on canals? Any info please

    Floaters

yes i have heard you can use marshmellows, if you think about it they are soft, sweet and bright, sounds good in theory, never tried them but will next summer for carp. Also there are floating pellets and bread, not weird or wonderful but effective

    perch

I have been watching Stewart bloors perch fishing videos on youtube. They are really interesting and would recommend them and his articles, but i just had a few questions i didn't know if you could answer? 1) He uses gudgeon as a dead bait quite often, and in one video i watched he caught a pike, even though he was after perch, i guess that means he must be using wire traces, does that not put the perch off?? Im sure i read somewhere that a lot of the time wire traces put perch off or something? Any ideas?? 2) He uses bite alarms, would this be the best method? He fishes lob-worms or freshwater dead-baits most the time and a free running ledger rig. I would of thought, as perch tend to swallow the baits right down a lot of the time that a more sensitive method of bite detection like the quivertip would be better? Any info?? thanks for the feedback, really appreciated. And i would definitely recommend his videos and articles, really interesting. dd http://www.sicm.org/2010.articles.index.html
  15. I caught a roach today and it had a little worm thing on its head, near its eye, i took it off and squished it, it looked like a little leech or something, would it be a parasite? It was greeny brown and less than an inch long. Does it harm the fish or are they not bothered, it wasnt in the fish but crawling around it. Anybody seen this before or know what it is?? thanks
  16. You know that duckweed stuff, tiny little pieces of weed that look a bit like the top of clovers? Well its covered about a third of my local canal! The fish still seem to feed and thrive happily enough, but i was just wondering if they would go under the weed much? I mean would they go under there for shelter and safety or would they prefer to go out in clearer water, anybody know? I was just curious. cheers
  17. thanks for the advice, just to let you all know i decided against the river today as it was threatening to rain and i didn't want to be trying different spots and walking about getting soaked at the river, instead i sat under my umbrella at the canal!! Sods law it didn't actually rain but oh well, i'll try the river again on a nicer day. Pinkies did work, but only throwing a few in to attract the fish, i used the maggots for hookers, luckily there were a few stray maggots in there or i would have been a bit screwed. Had some nice perch up to about a pound on the float and some roach, not much but nice to be out fishing. thanks again for all the tips and info. dd
  18. thanks again for all the info, i decided against the river today as it looked like it could rain and was very windy. Instead i popped to the local canal and had some nice perch up to a pound and a few roach, with my umbrella up in case of rain!! Will try the river when i get a chance for the chub but i am hoping for a nice calm, preferably sunny or at least warmish day so its nicer to walk about and try different spots. dd
  19. haha ok will take bread, cheers for the info
