I would honestly say that you've done nothing wrong as such Dave, maybe a bit more attention to your clutch settings would have helped but we're not all perfect like Watatoad lol. A hooklength is preferential when there is a good chance of a larger fish but its all about weighing the odds. If in doubt, use the hooklength and always free running or semi-fixed rigs.
Its happened to me, it'll happen again and it'll happen to you again too. It IS possible to land large fish on featherweight tackle but it takes time, practice and sometimes good ol' luck. My PB carp was just like that, only fish I've ever weighed, 14lb on 4lb hooklength to 6lb mainline and I knew then and still know that I was a gnats dangly from 'twang', from strike to net.
Mr Carp will be fine, just be a bit wary of maggots for a few days and sport a punk look.
Carry on caring like you do now and it will only make the future of our sport all the more certain. Whether you are aware of it or not, you are the future of the sport and I don't think we could want for a better outlook with guys like you on our side.

Well put my friend.

ive been a course fisherman now for a few years and i need help on tying knots how to properly rig a 5bb waggler float and a simple and easy ledger rig. Please if anybody could give me some advice on simple steps on what i need help would be much appreciated. Many thanks and looking forward to hearing u guys advice.
Welcome to the fold.
Following on from RR's advice, I'd suggest searching for 'Tying knots' on Youtube as well.
I always find a practicle demonstration easier to follow than a diagram.
(One of the problems in answering any question from a relative novice is to reply using jargon that the recipient doesn't understand!).
Practice setting up in the garden rather than on the bankside.
Learn and master each problem area before moving to the next.
Repetition will pay rewards.
Good luck and best wishes.

I can second that Budgie, I still do things 'the wrong way' but I now I just recognise that I've buggered up again. Things like clutch settings etc make all the difference.

I agree.
Nice to know that there are anglers out there that show an interest for the welfare of the fish though.Not just a 'missed opportunity'.
I would also suggest using suitable terminal tackle if fishing a water that holds carp.

Hi, I was think of having a go at feeder fishing, never done it before, never thought about doing it before, can you use a float fishing rod for it, if so would I need a bite detector or could I just watch the tip of the rod.
Also any informstion about how to set up the rig would be appreciated
You can use you float rod for ledgering, but why not get yourself a quivertip?
They are so cheap now and with your float rod as a second weapon, you can combine the two methods at the same time.
In terms of rigs, I'm sure there are plenty of historic posts on here which will guide you.Failing that, trawl the internet.
Best wishes.

I have been looking at cheap bite alarms (Under a tenner) when i came across this. I thought Dragon was a very respectable make of tackle and alarms so was surprised to see this alarm for 7 quid, brand new!
Is it too good to be true or is this a reliable alarm at a good price??
Has anybody got this alarm and got any info on it??
thanks

Suck it and see mate.
I purchased 2 Microns for around £20 delivered (E-bay) and they have'nt let me down yet.
Why anyone would spend 20 times that amount is way beyond my comprehension, but each to their own.
If you get a run and the alarm sounds, then job done!

I`m fishing a lake in november where the main species are Bream and Tench is it worth targetting the tench?
the lake is www.watersmeet.co.uk
thanks
Tench fishing, for me, will always be synonymous with early summer mornings.Lily pads, 'Dawn Chorus', sweet perfumed air, peace with the world, arm-wrenching action!
Interesting question though.Never even considered targeting them at this time of the year, so let us know!

Depends entirely on the size of the bait, best way to judge it is to tie the rig with the bait on the hair.
As a general rule of thumb I'm looking for around 2mm between the bend of the hook and the top of the bait when I'm fishing for Carp or Tench.
Yeah, that's what I do.
Also, it will depend on how many boilies/pellets/grains you wish to hair rig.So mount them on the hair before tying to determine the length.
-
not a bad idea, thankyou. For all the people that recommended hair rigs i have recently made my first ever hair rig. A size 10 barbless drennan hook with a snippet of 4lb line off my reel. I made it all up and then decided to tie on a bait band instead of using the baiting needle way of doing it. Looking forward to using it for peperami chunks or pellets. cheers
Hi Dave,
Like you, I'd never tied (or used!) a hair rig before the summer.
However, they really are very easy to tie with a tiny bit of practice.
Never tried Pepperami, but will in the warmer months.
I DID use a baiting needle for pellets, however, and had an enormous amount of success using this presentation.
Good luck.Give it a go.

I fancy the idea of making my own lures this year.
How scientific does the design need to be?
I remember reading many moons ago about using an old door handle from a Cortina!
I don't know whether this was genuine, or if it would have been successful.
The idea of recycling some piece of 'junk' for the purpose appeals though!
Any thoughts?

Thanks for that!!
I've now had to shell out on a very dark pair of shades and a Labrador.

Hi all,
I had a weekend at Kingfisher lakes just gone and had a great time, I beat my PB Perch with this 1lb 8oz Perch... I know its not the biggest perch people have seen, but my biggest so was really happy!
Also, I caught my first ever Carp - 4lb 6oz Common...
Caught plenty of other fish including Tench, Pike, Roach etc... but these 2 were my favourite catches
Cheers,
Stu...
Good luck to you buddy.That's what it's all about!

I suppose all good things have to come to an end sometime...today I had the sad task of bidding farewell to an old and faithful friend, one who has been my constant companion since I took up angling a few short years ago. There were many tears shed today, lots of memories and fond recollections of good times shared, but in the end there was nothing that could be done...
I am absolutely gutted...my trips to the lake will never be the same without my stalwart friend who was always there for me through thin and thick... I really don't know how I can carry on without the constant help and support...
I blame myself...if only I'd been more careful, more attentive...more receptive...
Yes, I accidentally put my pair of lucky fishing knickers through a boil wash....
The fetching lace trim and pastel pink rosebuds were already faded beyond recognition, but still I was given support and comfort when I was in need...now that help is no more....
If anyone needs a marquee for a special event, please PM me!
Janet
May they rip.
Sorry...R.I.P.

I forgot The Smiths!
I saw The Mission back in about '88?!
Of course, my original list has altered.
Fave tunes of the moment:
1) Powder blue (Elbow);
2) My sweet Lord (Harrison);
3) Black dog (Led Zep);
4) Orpheus (D.Sylvian);
5) She talks to angels (The black crowes).
Subject to change by the second.

What about a little mini remote control robot fish lure type thingy for Pike fishing?
Something that would swim up and down the lake, covering loads of water for those days when you just cant be asked to get the lures out or wobble a dead bait. You could sit in your chair and move your lure around using a mouse on your lap top. It would be even better if it could read the contours of the lake and know when to clear gravel bars etc. Variable speed and some sort of camera to beam back underwater pictures would be useful. You might even be able to drive the lure straight in to the mouth of a unsuspecting Pike
When you think of bait boats etc, it does not seem such a stupid or far off idea. If you use a bait boat to get your bait to the ideal location, why not take it to extremes and the ideal bait placement is to deposit your bait in the fishes mouth
It will only be a matter of time
but while I wait for this wonderous creation, maybe I could try screwing a few trebles on to one of those bath toys, but I guess the wind up mechanisim would not last more then a few feet.
Like it!
Or some kind of underwater pendulum to hypnotise them?Maybe a lead with a watch face.
"You are feeling very hungry...."etc.

Hey Everyone, i go fishing quite alot and i go pike and course fishing, but what i would like to know is what is chub and tenches favorite Bait ?
Also what fish go for meal worm ?
Thanks
I can't speak for Chub, but I've fished for Tench over many seasons.
My successes (and it will be determined by the water you are fishing) have come from:
1) Sweetcorn (Yellow/Red);
2) Casters;
3) Maggots.
If I'm fishing at close range in the summer I will usually ball in around 1kg of decent grounbait over a fairly tight area at the start of the session.
Again, provided I'm not fishing at range, I almost always use the'lift method', anchoring the bait to the bottom and giving glorious bite detection!
Magic.
Got to be honest though, never tried targeting them in the colder months.
-
I decided to try my hand at making my own boilies in early summer, purely for Carp on lakes.
Just wondered if anyone had ever had any success using them on rivers for other species.
Are they a bait that the fish need prolonged exposure to?
It was a buzz to get a take on something I'd literally cooked up myself, and also a damn sight cheaper than paying the ridiculous prices in the tackle shop!

I've told this story before, so sorry if you've read it before. It's 100% true!
Lots of years ago - I was about 15 I think - I was fishing for carp at a local gravel pit. It was the end of autumn and cold, and I was wearing 2 lots of clothes. I had only caught a couple of carp from this lake before and was really hoping for one of the better ones. The lake was nice and quiet, so we were quite hopeful.
I'd cast to a small gap between 2 islands where I thought the fish might go through, and after a couple of quiet hours I got a screaming run, line was pouring off the reel! I hit it and felt the heavy pressure of a big fish, which moved off with such power I had to give line. I couldn't stop this fish, and watched horrified as it went beyond the island and around the back of it...my line got caught up on some trees, and everything ground to a halt. Aargh!
I couldn't bear to lose it so without thinking I grabbed the net and started wading out to the island, about 50 yards away. It was a shallow lake but deeper than I thought, up to chest height, and very, very cold, Looking back now I shudder to think what might have happened if I'd walked into a silt patch or into a deep hole I didn't know about, especially wearing all those heavy clothes. It was a very, very stupid thing to do. But after a while I dragged myself onto the island, rod tip still faintly thumping, and prepared to net the monster fish. I freed the line from the branches and went around to the other side of the island to see...
...a bloke on the other bank pulling as hard as he could on his rod, which happened to be hooked onto my rig
I didn't land him. The wet, cold walk back to the bank was a very depressing affair.
Ha ha.Not to worry...he didn't catch you either!
