  1. Yeah I feel bad and guilty as I knew that mounting a hook at the back was stupid. It's like I ignored all my years of Pike fishing and went ahead and done what I know is wrong. So despite it making me look like a right idiot, if it makes others think twice and not repeat my mistakes it's worth sharing the experience as its that time when many anglers may be predator fishing for the first time or like me radically changing the methods they are used too.

Nice to know there is considerate and helpful advice on here. Thanks for taking the time to provide both.

  2. I see them almost every visit at the Emberton Country Park, usually swimming just a few feet out from the bank. In fact the last time I went there I was walking quietly to a "Perch" spot between some bushes and trees and almost trod on 2 of them! one was curled up and the other trying to get away... I must admit it caught my attention for a few minutes looking at the snakes that closely and forgot about the Perch!.... I left the snakes to it and moved away else where.

I have no problems with them, lovely looking creatures and will do you know harm as long as you just respect them and their area and dont handle them.

    Cheers,

    Stu...

Glad I asked now.Wasn't expecting so many sightings!

  3. Since making my first posts for a considerable time several of you have enquired about my health. I'm fine thanks, although unfortunately 3 members of my family aren't, with in fact one dying last week.

The result is that, despite my own health improving, I've still had almost no time to fish (just 3 times since March), let alone post on the internet. It's times like now that you realise that family is the most important thing in life.

As Peggy said recently this really has been our "annus horribilis". Indeed the last 18 months has been extremely frought. Family problems are going to continue to take up a lot of time, but I'll post whenever I can.

Luckily the year should end on a good note though as we're due to become grandparents again by the end of the year! :)

    Hi there,

As I'm a newbie here I've obviously never 'spoken' to you before, but your thread just struck a chord with me as I,ve just been through a rather painful episode myself. As you say, it does put things into perspective and I'd just like to wish you and your family happier times for the future.Best wishes,

    Fours.

  4. Really? I didnt know there were snakes in britain that went across water!! Never seen this but would love to, do you know what type they were?

As far as I know (and I stand to be corrected!), all snakes can 'swim'.I presume they were grass snakes but, heh, I'm no David Attenborough!Honestly, it was a faily 'regular' occurrence.Mainly on rivers as I remember.

  5. Recently bought a bag of 8mm halibut pellets to try as a huge pack of them was only 4 quid so thought you cant go wrong. Never really used pellets much, especially the large hard ones like these, could you tell me the best way to present them please, is putting a bait band on it and sliding the hook through good enough or do you have to hair rig and stuff like that? Cheers

    Hiya,

Never used a bait band, so can't comment on that.I have used them hair-rigged, and had amazing results!(see 'Crucian Carp' thread).

On several waters i've fished they were the difference between quality fish and blanking. Are they pre-drilled?What species are you after?I,ve caught a wide range of species with these, and consider myself a convert!

  6. Up until a few years ago, I would witness at least 2 snakes per season scrolling across the river/lake I was fishing.

Anyone encountered one lately? And no, I don't mean Eels!

Fascinating creatures, even if they did make me tuck my trousers into my boots and give an involuntary shiver!

  7. adrenaline rush starts to go away later on in the year once you caught a few which is a shame cause its a good natural high.

i hope when i get out piking at the end of October ive got it back.

my first double figure pike i caught on my own gave me the best buzz. i sat down for half an hour with the biggest grin on my face :)

I'm sure I'll still feel it for the first few years regardless!If/when I land my first double I'll HAVE to sit down cos my legs will be trembling too much to keep me upright!I'm 43 now and still feel the same rush I did when I was 13, regardless of the target. What a sport, eh?!

  8. Thanks fours

I am generally a roach, bream chub type angler but do not know what this venue is like. Obviously if it holds good stocks of these then the old toothy creatures will not be far away.

    regards

    john

    Sure you're right.

I'll give it a crack soon, let you know.

  9. Crucians can only hybridese with other members of the carp family. The common ones are king carp (common, mirror, ghost etc.) koi and brown goldfish.

They interbreed with these other carp quite readily and on waters where both species occur hybrids are quite common.

As davedave says if it is a true crucian its a cracking fish.

Cheers for that.I'll upload some pics asap.

  10. I think they breed with roach or bream and hybridize, but if its a true crucian thats a lovely fish. How did you catch it? Never caught one myself, heard they are quite finicky about tackle and things though.

Well, terminal tackle was beefy gear for large carp.Caught it on 8mm Halibut pellets tipped with a fake corn hair-stop.

So as you can see, there was nothing cute about the rig!I'll upload some pics when I work out how to!

  11. With my new found enjoyment for fishing new rivers in east anglia I find myself studying websites for fishing clubs etc and scouring newspaper sites for sports sections and angling reports.

There are several I am interested in but cannot find much about fishing the great ouse near earith.

The london anglers club have a stretch at bluntisham and as a member find this most interesting. Looking at google earth it seems a fairly large stretch of river with good access in a peacefull area.

Its also only about 50 miles so a reasonable day trip.

So would really like some local info on the venue. Has anyone fished either the LAA bit or somewhere near that area?.

thanks for reading this as always,

    regards

    john

    Hi John,

Sorry, wish I could help.I live about 20 miles from there but have never fished it.I'm looking for some local pike rivers, so I'd be interested to hear some info too! What are you targeting?

  12. Was fishing a Cambs lake in August this year for carp. It's not the easiest water, and I only had 2 fish all day.One was a 5lb Bream, the other a beautiful Crucian.

Thing is, I'd never caught one before so didn't really know the average stamp for them.I weighed it anyway and it read at 3lbs 4ozs.

I gather this is a descent size! However, it appears they can hybridize. How do I know whether it was the 'real deal' or not?

I took some snaps of it, and the scale count seems right.Any other pointers?

  13. I think that is a spot on answer...

Unless they have heard of it and just think its old fashioned rubbish.

They also seem to dismiss what is not Commercial Carp fishing.

They also seem to dismiss what is not fished for a distance.

They also seem to dismiss what is not just a case of cast and wait for the alarm to sound.

They also seem to dismiss what is not on one or other type of leger.

They also seem to dismiss what is not on the pole.

And they do not seem to want to put any effort into studying their prey or venue or even methods of fishing so we provide instant packaged just add water solutions.

    Fair comment, well made.

However a forum is designed to be question-based isn't it?Many people are looking for a short-cut to success for obvious reasons. It takes the leg-work out of the equation. Not defending it, but has none of your angling knowledge been gleened from books/friends/forums?Just playing Devils Advocate!

  14. Is it just me, or is it a reality that you can stare at a float/bobbin/tip for hours on end but the moment you divert your attention (usually out of sight!) a bite/run occurs?Usually too late to connect! Not always, mind, but often enough that I've DELIBERATELY tried to simulate being 'elsewhere' to induce a bite.Never happens then.Your thoughts or stories please.

  15. A serious topic.

Now that winter is approaching the old pot noodle will be making it into my tackle bag for day trips as well as long stay sessions. I only like one flavour the Chinese Chow Mein, but am interested does any one else partake of this wonderful delicacy while on the banks.

A serious topic indeed!Chicken+Mushroom every time.Filled to the brim of the pot with scalding water.Finish the noodles, left with a 'delicious' drink of, erm... flavoured water. At this point, a packet of Cheesy Wotsits is added!Yes,really.Cutlery required.

  16. I always say the same thing when this topic comes up, so apologies to everyone who's bored of it by now! I would always recommend a good quality 2nd hand older Shimano over a new Okuma or similar. Specifically, the old Aero GTE (not GTE-B or GTE-C - these are more recent models and not as good) like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHIMANO-BAITRUNNER-A...=item5d2b6391e7

I recently bought another one of these from ebay for £40, amazing value. No warrantly of course, but it's an old Shimano baitrunner and so you don't really need one! If it needs a service at any point, PM Budgie on here and he'll sort you out.

As for alarms, it depends on what you think you need/want. I use very basic Fox Micron M and the cheapest GF alarms, which are very reliable and go beep when the line moves. Why people spend hundreds of pounds on alarms I will never know. I did once own a delkim, but spent all my time fiddling with the sensitivity setting so it only beeped when a fish was responsible. I then realised that the cheap alarms had this 'setting' built into them, so I sold the delkim and went for the cheapies!

    Quality answer.Couldn't agree more.

  17. saying that though id rather unhook a 40lb'er than anything under 7lbs im always paranoid about where hooks are in the mouth before i stick my hand in. something i dont think is mentioned in any "pike handling" tutorials ?

Cheers lads, much appreciated.Looking forward to the adrenaline rush!!

  18. WEll a couple of months into rediscovering the sport i have just outlayed some more money on some better gear. I ahve just purchased some daiwa mission carp rods a pair of mitchell avocarp 70s and a rod pod plus after a bit of thinking i decided on a subscription to AT to get the bite alarms and fleece (thought with buying it on and off it would be a bargain).

Whats the general opinion on this as an initial set up as after the frenzy i kinda need some reassurance

The good thing about it is i have change from £90 so its not the end of the world if i have made a mistake

I was in a similar position early summer.

Look, if you catch fish and don't encounter major issues with your new gear, then 'job done'.

I spent no more than £300 for a Carp set-up and caught plenty. My mate has gear worth 10 times that, but the fish don't shop at Harrods! You (and I) can buy the better gear at a later date if we feel the need, but I honestly feel there is an element of snobbery at times in the Carping world and the tackle suppliers can see them a mile off - hence the prices.

You do , to a certain extent, get what you pay for however.See how you get on with your kit and keep or reject as you see fit.

  19. Bit of a strange question, and no jokes please, but how can you get the smell of fish off your hands?? You know when you've been fishing, you come back and you smell of that mixture of damp, mud, bait and fish slime, a pretty horrible combination!

A good shower and clean clothes gets most of it off but i always find the smell lingers on your hands for ages because of where you've picked up the fish im guessing, not ideal if your just about to go out.

I wondered if any of the experienced anglers on here had any experience of how to get it off?

I know it sounds weird but does get annoying so any advice please :)

    Hi,

Alcohol gel works for me.I take it with me and clean my hands after every capture(so not often,ha ha).

  20. Hiya,

Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times already!

I really want to target Pike this Autumn/Winter and wondered if anyone could give me some decent waters around the March (Cambs) area.I'm generally a Carp/Tench/Bream chap in the summer months, but really fancy a pop at Esox this year!

Any ideas? Also, I'm a bit worried about landing one and not being confident in unhooking it!Should I find an experienced buddy to help to begin with?Any help gratefully received.

  21. Usually fish one rod or pole but would like to fish two rods on a couple of ponds.

I've already got a decent Carp rod but rarely use it so was thinking about buying a 'baitrunner' reel and a bite alarm and setting that up to target some of the bigger fish whilst still being able to float fish on another rod.

Not got a massive budget, about £60-70 for both items, can I get anything reliable on this budget?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lucky

    Hiya,

I only recently (this summer) took up some casual carp fishing.

I was also in need of a baitrunner and alarm set-up, so turned to E-bay.

With the budget you've set yourself, which is similar to mine, you should easily get what you need.

I found a Shimano 8010 Baitrunner (near mint) for £45, and 2 Micron alarms for £21.

Depends just how serious you want to get,but I've had no trouble at all with either.

I also bought the 6010 model for about the same price, so had a 2 rod set-up for just over £100!

Could've spent more but why???I'm here to be shot down by the 'Carpies', but if my cheapish alarm tells me I've got a run then it's done it's job hasn't it?

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  22. Hiya fours.

There is lots of good piking info in the coarse section and you can comment on any of those or open a new topic if you have a question.

    Cheers for that!
