  1. I'm thinking of listing these on eBay later, but if anyone wants to make me a crazy offer for Budgie's pants before I do, I may be tempted to do a direct deal:

    f9e4d690.jpg

would you take a handfull of shells and two white mice for the pants.

what happened to the code "what happens at wingham stays at wingham".

i'm too sexy for my shirt - too sexy...........

    :-)

  2. You obviously have no idea what constitutes a "Twitcher", but they certainly won't be twitchers if they're displaying interest in your Mutes and Mallards.

at the start of a day session proud mum duck had 10 ducklings, by lunch two had gone. when i packed up there were only five left. there are a lot of 7LB pike in the water.

  3. Some people even eat Peperami, even though squeezing one makes it dribble fat in a very unpleasant manner. :o

p.s. Never attempt to go for a Jimmy Riddle without washing your hands FIRST, if you've been baiting with the black label (Firestick) variety. ;)

I buy pellets, maize, molasses and hemp in bulk from an animal feed wholesaler -

They also sell pigeon condition mix (Partiblend) and Vitalin.

I get whole dried chillies and turmeric from a herb seller -

All far cheaper and i can prepare the amount i need.

    P.S.

Never touch your peewee after grinding chillies. LOL

  4. Having asked the question about lures/plugs/spinners/foam/cork/flies they have so far not replied - i guess they may not.

It’s a good job i am 6 foot tall - blonde hair and blue eyes and like to burn books. What next?

I will let you know if they reply

I have not had a reply from the management despite having twice PMd - an unofficial reply i have had is that "plastic lures/plugs/spinners do not carry on fishing if they are lost".

I disagree with this view as the pike are so voracious - they take anything that’s lying on the bottom.

I will let you know how it goes.

  5. i suppose it depends on if a canal is a river ,they do flow but many never connect to a river so perhaps are extremely long ponds?

the basingstoke canal has a close season for "restocking"

but seemingly some of the kennet and avon is open all year

    http://home.btconnect.com/kenavon/usefulinfo.pdf

i'm sure though canals are subject to club rules which may forbid stealing fish as i expect some do on rivers (even when the fish are wild) which you agree to on joining the club .Farnham AS has a no take policy on all their waters

i remeber seeing keith floyd cook pike many years ago - in fact he cocked up filleting it - the french devour pike as a delicacy.

you get a fair size fillet from a 7Lb fish - surely the odd cock fish does not hurt.

  6. Are all artificial baits banned on the water - if so I presume this also means lures/plugs/spinners/foam/cork/flies?

Does the club think boilies will just fall off a hair of a broken hooklength?

If your club is that concerned about fish with hooks and broken line they will also need to impose a minimum main line / hooklength rule.

  7. Whether the lead is running, semi fixed or fixed wont be the cause of crack offs. Also a lot of semi fixed "safe rigs" Ive seen are in actual practice anything but.

exactly Budgie. any rig wrongly tied or attached could be lethal if cracked off.

every angler has to visit the baliff's hut to buy a day ticket, why not just have a quick check of gear then and the baliff sign the day ticket to certify that the set up was ok at that point. the water says they are available to give advice, surely this is there chance.

i am not convinced all is about fish care, i think there is an element of selling bait as well.

well i have asked them the following

Does this include Avid Carp Corn Stops and Sight Stops

Corn Stops and highlites used in combination with real baits?

What about plastic lures/plugs/spinners/foam or cork cored boillies or flies?

Why not introduce a minimum main line / hooklength strength rule?

Instead of the plastic ban why not certify our set ups at the shop.

A bailiff could check our rigs and sign the day ticket.

i agree about the boillies - how long do they last on the hook?

  9. I completely agree with the rules, for one it is up to the owner of the fishery.

I have also fished countless different venues, wondered why a branch of an overhanging tree was constantly twitching and pulling, only to realise or be told that it is a tethered fish. Sometimes they go out on a boat and rescue it, others they don't. Fixed leads are dangerous things and not at all necessary when semi fixed rigs are just as good.

The plastic baits rule is also fair enough i would say, although i don't feel so strongly about it. A maggot, pellet or a worm would probably be gone within a day if not less, and there is a chance a fish will still pick it up but not it won't be there half as long as a plastic bait which will be there for ever, at least a good few months i would imagine. Saying that though if there are no fixed leads they shouldn't be expecting crack offs so the plastic baits shouldn't be left there.....

It's up to the fishery owner and if thats what he wants to do to protect his stocks fair enough, somebody once told me that a 20lb fish is worth about 10 grand, if i had fish worth that much i wouldn't allow people to use hooks when they are fishing!!!!!!!!

Instead of the plastic ban why not certify our set ups at the shop. A bailiff could check our rigs and sign the day ticket.

  10. Well at the end of the day, the owner of the venue has the right to set any restrictions he likes, you either follow the rules of the water, or vote with your wallet and fish elsewhere!!

But bait and tackle restrictions seem to be very common on most day ticket waters, and are generally imposed by owners with the fisheries best interests at heart, (whether they are scientifically correct reasons is another matter)

the only ones that really get up my nose are the rules that are imposed to rip you off - "The only pellets allowed are the vastly overpriced ones on sale in the baliffs hut" type rules!

    Mat

Interesting what you say Mat about preferred pellets - the water owner may have connections to a bait company - less plastic more real bait sales - i have had the same plastic baits for over 10 years.

keep going with the thoughts and comments.

  11. Until one comes along, will I do? :D

My first thought is that any bait, unless very soft, would still be on the hook in the event of a 'crack off', so it would "still be fishing". Although a plastic 'bait' would last longer.

    John.

Thanks for your thoughts - if this became a blanket ban, like lead shot did, i wonder what the reaction would be and what Enterprise Tackle Ltd (main producer of imitation baits) would have to say.

    Please keep the thoughts/comments coming.

    John

  12. I am relying on the providers of excellent advice who know what they are talking about. Thanks in advance.

A water i fish has just introduced some new rules.

"No Plastic Baits, No Fixed Leads - We will be doing random checks"

    The rationale for this is

"If you crack off the rig is always fishing as the plastic bait can not come off."

I know that if we don’t like the rules we can fish elsewhere but having seen videos by the likes of Danny Fairbrass and co,

In which they use plastic baits so i am struggling with this one.

I usually fish the odd grain of plastic corn or a group of plastic maggots.

I also use drilled boillies with foam inserts or just a piece of yellow foam.

I keep thinking they are wrong - what do you think?

  13. I see now.I'm not surprised as a braid that light will be very fine indeed (close to around the same diameter as 3lb mono I would guess) A lot of big reels would struggle with that now matter what quality.Another underlining of the "choose braid by diameter not breaking strain" rule I think.

I see what you mean - i think i got a bit caught up in all this.

The spod rod i have is a pukka spod rod.

I will stick to using the fixed spool sea reel i have until it dies.

I will leave the 20LB sea mono on it.

I wonder is it worth putting some 50LB mono as a shock leader or

Use some of the korda arma kord as a shock leader?

    What do you think?

    Cheers

  14. Teddy I might have misunderstood your initial post.Is it that the braided mainline is getting caught up in the bail arm roller assembly on the retrieve and not on the cast as I thought? Also could you tell me what model the reel is your having problems with or better still put a photo of the bail arm on here (if you cant put a photo up but can take one email it to me at-budgieburgess55@ntlworld.com )

I'm up in the loft this evening getting my Tench gear down so will grab the spodding reel I use with the "stub" pick up and take a pic.

Its on the retrieve i am having problems - casting is ok.

I have hopefully attached a picture of where the braid is getting caught.

It’s between the roller and the body. The braid is very fine – its 15LB Dyneema.

    post-20757-1301329017_thumb.jpg

  15. Don't think that just because a reel has "Spod" wrote on it its any better than any other reel with a big spool! There are a hundred and one surf casting fixed spools out there that will do the job.Just look for a nice big (preferably long) spool....................and one with a decent bail arm pick up!

A lot of guys remove/convert the bail arm on spod reels to a manual/stub pick up (I will post a photo if anyone isn't sure about this) to avoid the problem of the bail arm closing in mid cast.

But then again your problem would be easily (and far cheaper solved) by just sticking a 50lb mono shock leader on!

    a picture would be great.

i have a fixed spool sea reel. i have some Korda arma kord to use as a shock leader - maybe i will use the mono you suggest - far cheaper.

    thanks for your advice.

  16. Having had problems with spodding i have now got some dyneema floating braid and Korda Arma Kord.

    So i have two questions.

1, what length should the leader of Korda Arma Kord be?

2, what is the best know for joining the leader to the floating braid?

    Any help would be great.

    Cheers

    Big John

    Hi,

Hope to answer two questions here - first of all Suffolk Water Park traditional lake allows you to park on your peg - open boot and fish - well maintained banks and platforms. One end of the lake has a very well maintained portaloo - even my wife uses it - there is a cafe for food and drinks and toilets - bait is available on site - lots helpful advice from bailiffs and its a day ticket allowing two rods. I have had bream to 6 1/2 LBS tench to 4 1/2 - there are some very nice carp, pike, Rudd and roach in there. You can use either pole or rod. It is very safe, my cousin takes his 4-year-old boy and he is a handful and catches roach on a 2m whip. Take a look at their website and they have a forum for the water park - http://www.suffolkwaterpark.com/

PM me if you want any more info on where to fish and bait etc.

For Mick who wants to fish at Nacton - if you mean the lake in Nacton Woods - i think it is a syndicate water now, i cant remember who controls it - sorry.

    Tight lines

    Big John

  18. Welcome to AN John, best of luck with the bream fishing and I look forward to your reports :)

What type of waters will you be fishing, out of interest?

Suffolk water park, Traditional Lake and Big Lake and some other disabled friendly lakes in Suffolk: Woody's Lake, Barking Tye and Kirton Hall Lake.

If anyone knows of any other disabled / wheelchair friendly lakes in Suffolk I would be grateful for the info.

    Cheers

    Big John

  19. A quick point on undertow, noting something Steve D said in the winter bream topic. He said something along the lines of, 'if nothing else, undertow would make all the fish face a certain direction'.

    Worth thinking about that one!

Undertow was brought to my mind again this morning as a load of little polestyrine packaging balls had been dropped on a pavement. The gentle breeze had moved them all over the place, but there were big concentrations of them in little depressions, against 'bars', and where the breeze had petered out. It was quite interesting to see so clearly what happens to food on the bottom of the lake.

I just wanted to say a big thanks to all who have contributed to this thread.

I have finished reading the whole thing - so much food for thought.

Due to illness i have not fished for 5 years – last year I returned to what has been a passion since I was 6 years old. I have always tried to be thoughtful in my fishing rather than chucking and chancing it, so I have been reading magazines and watching DVDs and TV programmes to get up to speed.

I previously carp fished, at that time the monster size method feeder was on the rise and it was boillies all the way. In what I have seen and read I noticed that the carp boys have now moved to particles. I used to fish a notorious commercial water in north Essex, where 100 LB bags might get you in the top ten of a match – the carp seemed to be pigs with fins – you had to feed big – 10 KG of bait was the order of the day.

I originally decided to read it to see where the changes came since I last fished – I have been moved to consider my fishing carefully. I fish for bream and tench, a 4 LB tench instead of a bream will never disappoint me. I have decided on only minor alterations to my fishing:

    1st Rod.

I will fish one rod with a small PVA stick with a critically balanced bait of a single grain of sweet glugged fake corn as a bottom bait on an anti-eject rig at some distance from the other rod on an area without weed on a patrol route.

    2nd Rod.

The other rod will be fished over a spodded bed of bait of particles: pellets of various sizes – mainly halibut and coarse fish micro pellet, chopped up maize steeped in molasses, chopped worm, corn steep liquor, hemp, some halibut groundbait and some chopped up boillies. this will be on area free of weed. Hook bait will be cycled through maize, 8mm halibut pellets, chopped worm and chopped boillies. Fished with a flatbed method feeder on a short hooklength tied anti eject with the bait hair rigged and critically balanced.

I have plotted the moon cycles for the year and will be mindful of undertow and wind etc. so when the weather improves I will be out and I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again to all who contributed.

    Big John.

  20. I agree that it was a pity they felt they had to kill it. :(

Apparently they towed it backward to drown it (according to the Dail Mail).

Taking Elton,s point, I,m not sure these were "ordinary" anglers.

I also doubt if they were licenced commercial fishermen.

Perhaps Thursday is not a "signing-on" day in the Dorset area.

Can i just add something about Dorset as an area.

There are many fish and chip shops that have sold shark and chips for years.

I have been going to Dorset for over 40 years.

There was a bounty on any shark by the local fish shops.

Is shark and chips far from swordfish steaks and chips?

When i was about 10 years of age i was staying in Swanage, Dorset.

One night while walking around the stone quay we saw a thresher shark.

It was gliding in less than two feet of water.

It swam around a few boats that were moored.

This area is used by children for crab fishing- loads of smelly squid used to catch the crabs, this may have attracted the fish.

After a few minutes it turned and glided out to sea.

    We were all astounded

Lets take our hats off to our sea fishing brothers who have fished for tope and conger eels for years.

They take catch and release very serious and have for many years.

A final thought to those who may wish to kill some critter or other.

Until you can make one and bring it to life you can't kill it.

  21. Thanks to all for advice.

I should have said that bite alarms are banned on the water. I went up in weight to stop being had by the tench - they were sucking up the 8mm pellet - hair rigged on a 4-inch hook link connected to a 30g flat Preston method feeder. I am very happy to keep using quiver tips; I just feel the browning rod is struggling with the 45g feeder with bait. I had the John Wilson Signature Barbel Quiver Rod at 1.75 test curve in mind, especially if I hooked a rogue carp. I know there is the Shimano Beastmaster Medium Feeder Rod and the 1.5lb Korum Multi-Feeder rod as well – too many to chose from. Has anyone used any of these rods? Should I stick with the browning?

    Teddy
