  1. OK, if the fishery/ club wants a pink duvet and a bunk bed for the fish I suggest they ought to provide em otherwise we will be transferring tons of foreign mussels about the place. Would a separate caravan for the fish to recover in be a possible compromise?

I haven't seen a suitable sized cradle for my whip fishing. I am hoping that this will be a pocket sized one.

How long a snooze do the fish need before I put em back in the pond? Am I allowed to just tip em all in (whoosh) or is there an agreed procedure to release them (twice tickled under the chin and a friendly chat before submerging them in a camou bag and opening the vents )?

  2. Taken the time to appreciate fishing with my old 11 ft cane rod instead of coveting a glass fibre rod.

Taken every opportunity while I was young to get out on my local rivers but then I would never have become a family man.

Talked more to those strange fishing blokes on the river instead of just watching them.... so much experience just lost.

  3. The biggest problem with chilling maggots in the fridge is the rest of the family. I fail to see why a pint of maggots needs to be met with hysterical screaming and a day in therapy. I have tried some of those arguments about minimising the the maggots in the boot, but it tends to be met with a pile of 'em on the drive when I come home the next day. Seriously though, Picking the Maggots out of the carpet in the boot of the car is a real winner at the village show ( how many can you put in the tub in a minute for 10p) and much more inclusive than wellie wanging.

If you really do not want to riddle the maggots, and quite frankly I fail to see why anyone would not want to do this, you are drawn down the route of investigating umbrellas and ponchos for the whole tub. This often does lead to all sorts of arguments about why should someone have to do this (presumed infringements of human rights....bloody Farage giving everyone the notion of an opt out clause) and another set of arguments about who gets what colour etc.(animal rights lot clear off!!).

Another top tip is to go for mixed colours, so you have something to do on a blanking afternoon, so relaxing, much better than therapy.

Alternatives to maize are worth considering, curry powder makes the little devils go like hell! Gound bait mixes are worth exploring to kill two birds at one go, the tubes of handy maggot glue come in handy, can give a caddis fly lava appearance.

  4. An observation;

When I use the centrepin (sorry, just a budget model for me) I do so to add more control to how the float is presented. The trouble is that this is usually on very short lengths of river and I do not need the huge holding capacity of the reel. So as the the price of the reel rises so it becomes a novelty.

They do look good though and they are all shiny. I know that we want them silent but when they click it does sound good as well. When you get it wrong you can also get a really decent Hairy Mary, not like those stupid closed face jobbies. I must admit I would love to know how to make one, probably need a drill and stuff like that. This bloke seems to have the idea http://youtu.be/htHRr-7EbEU I suspect that this could get round the insurance problem.

  5. Fish populations on a river are dynamic.... the little b's move about. What is a good spot for pike one year then becomes a not so good one. Predators benefit (or suffer) from the rise and fall of the prey population, who in turn are affected by the element in the food chain that they rely on.

For me it gives a sense of mystery to fishing a river, Established lakes and ponds often have very high expectations as to what you will catch. A lake near me has the carp area, the chub spot etc Rivers change from year to year, the "where have the *******s gone " syndrome becomes apparent. Like wise the predators move on.

I think that the trick is to ignore the popular sites, trampled/absent grass, easy swim to get fish out/in water. Get yourself to positions where the fish least expect a float to come from...waders help in this.

OK...must get the soapbox back in the shed, ttfn.

  6. I used 3 metre whip rods with 5 children (as dad and uncle). Cheap, no tangles and you start fishing almost immediately. When we moved to waters with bigger fish I elasticated the rods, moved to 4m rods and used 10ft match rod with basic reel.

It depends on how good the child is to untangle, unhook and bait up and how much time you want to spend on this.

Those that caught the skimmers loved it and always wanted to go more. Those that caught a decent fish 5lb + seemed to lose interest rapidly.

  7. Merrel knocked out a spiffing pair of jogging sandals designed for being on the coast.....got little holes in to let the water drain out! (Perhaps they were really designed for those who like to wade in the stream?) You always get the option of wearing neoprene sox if you want to up the fashion factor.

Sadly they do not make these sandals any more...
