  1. Get yourself down to wicks and build your own. :) 2000 gallons i keep clean with two 40 gallon cold water tanks linked together. Then i bought the filter material from a garden center, it looks like a load of plastic hair curlers. One 't piece' tap connection from the pump to regulate the flow of water into the tanks. The reason for that is i have an ordinary 35 quid sump pump that really does shift some water. Good luck.

Cheers Barry ,just looked on tinternet for some cold water tanks and it's come up with lots all different sizes etc .Any more information it would be greatly appreciated .This is my first pond some am a complete novice.

I agree with Barry, those cold water tanks are brilliant for filters, and a fraction of the price of buying one someone else has adapted.

Shame you can't have a bottom drain, filling the filters by gravity and pumping the clean water back into the pond makes a massive difference to how often the pump needs cleaning (i.e. almost never). If you are going to run the pump submerged in the pond, make sure you choose a pump with a decent solids handling capacity so that it doesn't block up easily. The high flow/low pressure pumps are good for this, so long as you don't need to pump to a very high head.

I know built the pond already tho .I've read somewhere that a retro drain is worth thinking about tho .You had any experience with these Steve?

  2. Hi all

Can anyone recommend a pond filter/pump for under £300 ,i've been thinking of the oase but they are expensive.I will have a mixture of fish and Plants ,it has no bottom drain ,it's also 625 Gallon .Am hopeing to keep a few Koi not many orfe and tench

  3. to be honest im not really a fan of your title, im 18 so its not a problem with me but i just feel you are wrong

infact i feel strongly against this title of post so would be appreciated if it could be changed, take a step back and think what you have written

    tut tut

any decent father wouldnt even consider writing that

I must say i have to agree with wat Simon said .

Congratulations on catching her first carp tho.

  4. most anglers I see on the Avon fishing for barbel these days use a bolt rig, bite alarms and Donkey chocking pellets, They set up sit back have a kip, drink a few beers and wait for the fish to hook its self.

    Were's the skill in that?

HaHa i hate the sight of bight alarms/bivvies on rivers ,bit of a hypocrite really as I'm prepared to do it on still waters.

  5. Why not use a slightly weaker hook length, in the time honoured fashion, joined to the main line with a swivel? That way, you have less chance of line twist and of leaving great lengths of line in the river after a snap-off. Alternatively, should the need arise, you can mould a bit of "lead" putty round the swivel for a bit of extra weight.

I've gone back to the many different methods i used to use and catch plenty on before i started using the booms,it's just i was wondering if it was me or a design fault on the booms as they seem like a good idea but just don't seem to work so well(for me).Yeah at times i do use lighter hook lengths 12-10 ,10-8 ,8-6 ,6-5 fluoro carbon etc ,but at times it's just not needed to use a hook length ,and to be honest i haven't been snapt of for many of year (while specimen hunting) thats not to say i wont be soon.Just think over the years I've come to know when to use lighter hook links etc.Don't feel moulding lead around the swivel is a safe method tho as that's basically fishing a bolt rig, IMHO.rig tubing does the similar desired effect to as the lead imho, witch i slide over my swivels etc and weighs a considerable amount less imho.

  6. Bit of a novice question witch i used to be able to do but forgot ,not for carp it's for barbel. When fishing rivers it's very often ill use 8lb straight to the hook or 10lb and have no need to use swivels etc ,so am looking to simplify my rig by using a hair on my main line ,how do you do this(i ussally use a knotless knot)?

Also does anyone use them "John Roberts Feeder Booms"?Every time I've used one ,2 out of ten cast it gets tangled so I've changed tactics .

  7. The thing is Chris, that to some people fishing for the pot is more acceptable, than fishing just for pleasure or fun. While I don't subscribe to that idea, I can see how some might feel that way.

They see angling as a form of 'torture', just to satisfy some cruel need in those that participate.

But to fish for the pot, is some justification for catching them in the first place.

A strange logic, but one that seems to appeal to some.

    John.

o right i get it now thanks for clearing that up.Don't agree with it but understand.

  8. It always astounds me how many bunny huggers we have on here.

There is nothing at all wrong with the killing of coarse fish to eat. Provided it is done with thought as to fish stocks in any particular water.

If it is a water on which there is a "no take" rule then fine. If it is on a water on which no such rule exists then certainly anyone that wants to can take fish for the pot. Yes we need to educate folks about what is an is not appropriate. But to call for the complete ban on taking fish is ludicrous.

There are plenty of waters in the UK where any coarse fish is despised and are removed in many ways, maybe we should campaign for such waters to allow fishing for the pot. But to simply say no to killing fish is wonderful ammunition for the antis. Carry on folks you'll get angling banned yet...

I don't understand your point ,your saying that if we protect fish and show angling is a fare sport and not a blood sport (witch it would be if we killed for the pot )that the antis would disapprove of this in fav of killing fish?

  9. As I understood it for many years past the only Crucian Carp that are accepted as being true bred as opposed to some form of hybrid come from one fishery or lake somewheres down South. I cannot remember exactly where but I do remember a bit of discussion about them on one of the forums in relation to records and how these fish were the only ones accepted for Crucian records.

But then I could be wrong. I usually am.

    Yately.

  10. Or always fish with a helpful friend and when you need to unhook a fish, have the friend lie on the ground, wet his shirt, and you have an instant unhooking mat.

Lol why didn't i think of this befor ,could have saved me lots of money.

  11. hello there im new to the world of tench fishing and on discovering one of my local ponds has tench from 1lb up to 3lb stacked in it i was wandering what would be the best way to go about catching them????

    thanks in advance :)

If there isn't many bigger fish than 3lb I'd use 3lb line with a wagler/match rod and a wagler/slider depending on depth to a size 16/14 hook with corn or Maggot as a hook bait .Lots of fun

  12. It's only a couple of weeks now and because of all the rain we've had in May, the rivers around me look unfishable! It's like last winter all over again - high water, all muddy and swirly. According to Metcheck there's plenty more to come before the 16th - I hate to say it but it's starting to look like I'll be spending opening day fishing a lake :headhurt:

Sound perfect conditions to me :).
