Hi All.
His pictures will be updated on his page in the album on his site when developed.
He does not use a digital camera.
The barbel album on Barbel Playground is well worth a look at anytime.
There are monsters on every page.

Hi All,
The Kennet Record has been smashed again this morning at 17lb 2oz. by my brother Paul.
He is still floating on air at the moment.

Hi All,
If you consider that a blood hound's sense of smell is about two thousand times stronger than our own and that it can also detect a sent in water, it is not unreasonable to assume that a fish can sense an odour in water in a far greater way than that relates to our own sense of smell.
Whether we call it smell or taste, does it really matter?.
Is the question whether they can sense a bait by detecting the molecular make up as Peter says.
Or just a question of whether smell is the best descriptive word to use for the sense that the fish uses.
I think that they can definitely detect the difference in partials/prospective food sources somehow or other.

Hi All,
I think that it is mostly down to what you are tackled up for in the first place and what gear you have when any particular fish is hooked.
I also think that location also plays a part, as a barbel in shallower water will fight completely different to one hooked in deep water.
At the end of the day though it has to be barbel for me, as it was a decision that I made many years ago.

Hi Rudd,
Happened to me in 1971, I caught a chub that would have broken the record at the time, by more than half a pound.
I was fishing floating crust for carp at the time, on a lake that had a stream from the river running through it.
Also had three others that were around the six pounds eight ounces mark, but there was also one that I did not catch, that was even bigger than the one that was bigger than the record one, that I caught.
I had a notion at the time that was similar to how I feel about barbel now, being caught in a lake, so did not publicise my catch.
I have thought about it quite a lot since, but I think that I have no real regrets about my decision at the time.

Hi Rich,
I would approach it by not fishing there at all.
If you want to catch barbel go for the real experience and take a trip to a barbel river where they should be.

Hi All.
Caught my first trout at seven, Perch at eight, other spiecies in between a barbel at fifteen and been fishing exclusivley for them, most of the time ever since.

Hi All,
Fish cannot smell, by definition you can only smell in air and you cannot taste without liquid.
Therfore fish would detect an odour (our definition of smell) with a sense that is more in line with our sense of taste.
Most of the arguments about whether fish can smell or not, are mostly down to definition of wording.
I think that they do detect the presence of odour, just that smell is probably the wrong word for how they do it.

I get the wife to clean mine.
After she unloads all my gear from the car, she sorts out my bait and puts whatever needs be in the freezer etc.
Washes nets etc. cleans rods and reels ready for next time.
I am too tired when I get home from fishing so someone has to do it.
What's the point of having a wife if you do everything yourself?.

Hi Newt,
Do you know where I can get some 10lb B.S.
Powerpro?.
I seem to be only able to get 2olb bs.
I had to settle for that, but would really like to get the 10lb.

Hi All,
I am pleased to see that most anglers would not like to see the licence abolished.
To anyone else, this is just a reminder that no one would like to see it abolished more than the anti angling brigade.
Taking away your political power is just the first brick in the wall to stop you fishing.

Hi All,
Just another slant on this discussion.
Some of the damaged caused by using barbless hooks has nothing to do with the hook it self, but by the way the angler plays the fish because of it.
Some anglers using heavy braids on heavy rods, play small carp very hard, because they are afraid that the hook will fall out if they don't.
If you transfer the stress point to the fishes mouth rather than the tackle during playing it, that is where the damage will happen.
So the comments earlier about torn mouths being caused by barbed hooks could just as easily be transposed to the opposite.
I agree mostly with what Leon says.
One other consideration about damaged caused, is the amount of time that different kinds of damage take to heal.
Try sticking a point into your own skin and wiggle it around a lot turning it.
Just like Peters Orange you get a neat round hole with the edges worn.
The tear that happens with a barbed hook, will heal in far less time than the deep worn hole of a barbless hook.
The real damage comes from infection, so healing time is far more important than small immediate damage.

Hi Jon,
Well done mate, some good fishing there.
You always know when it's a double don't you.
Like you said strong plodders.
I think that water depth also plays a big part in how they go when you get them on.
Barbel in shallow water always seem to go better than the ones hooked in deeper stretches.
In the deeps you sometimes don't realize untill you try to get their heads up, that it is a real monster.

Hi Ben,
I actualy meant mesh bags made from funnel web.
I use the "Total Carp" one myself, but there are many on the market now.
I always make my bags up before I fish.
Put about three or four hookbaits in and then fill with micro pellets, then store them in the tub with the pellets, so that they take on the oil and melt slightly slower.
.........Liam
PS> Ben, I don't actualy think that the bait that you use is really that important.
Salmon, halibut, Elips. They will all catch barbel. Most inportant thing, is putting them in the right place.

Hi Ferret,
Nearly peed myself laughing as well, at your responce.
Never crossed my mind while posting, that it could be twisted that much.

Hi Duality,
You should not really use less than 8lb line for barbel fishing nowadays.
Double figure barbel are becoming more commonly widespread.
If you have not had any barbel yet, I would recommend at least 10lb line in a good quality mono or even higher if using braid.
It would be a shame to loose that special fish because you were not properly equipped for the job.
I have fished for barbel for over thirty years and have had thousands of them (including sixteen doubles this season so far) and I use 8lb maxima.
Hair rigged pellet is probably the best (bog standard) bait to use at the moment in most places.
With the addition of some micro pellets in a PVA mesh bag.
Depends on the river that you are fishing though and what others are throwing in.
Other baits could be better on some rivers, but you will catch most places with this set-up.
………Liam
PS I use size 8 hooks and braid is less abrasive resistant than mono.

Hi Munkeh,
Just hold them upside down and stroke them.
This aplies to most fish also.

Hi Jon,
Well done mate, I bet that you are well hooked on barbel now.
It only takes one good barbel to hook yourself on them. It is the only fish that I fish for 90% of the time now.
........Liam
PS did you get a photo?.

Hi Newt.
I don't suppose you would be allowed to import them to a pond, so you could let them escape, like the signal crayfish was here could you?.
.......Liam

Hi Newt,
That stream looks like you should start stocking it with barbel to me.

Hi John,
They will eat just about anything.
However you can fool them for a short while with new baits, until they recognize them as a food source.
I have used some boilies that avoided them for about half a season before they have latched onto them.

Time to take up barbel fishing.
