  1. Ok thanks for that I may shoot him a message and see what he recommends. This reel has a line lay guide on it, I hear a lot of people avoid this for beach casting for greater distance, does this make much of a difference or it it marginal?
  2. Many thanks, I will have a look and see what's about. Do you recommend going for a 15" or the 13" version? Also I note they are designed for a fixed spool, does that mean that I can't use a multiplier on them?
  3. Hi gents, I'm relatively new into the world of beach fishing after mainly concentrating on piking and am after a bit of tackle advice if at all possible. I currently have a Ron Thompson beachcaster and a Shakespeare seawolf along with an Abu ambassador multiplier for the seawolf and a fixed spool for the rt. I'm having problems with the reel seat on the sealwolf and the free run on the abu seems to be inconsistent and jam up at times. Just for occasional use this has all been fine but I'm hoping to do a bit more beach fishing, probably only once every 6weeks or so and would like a nice reliable set-up that will last me for years. Would anyone be able to recommend a suitable rod and reel for such purpose, I generally fish the east Anglian coast aldeburgh, dunwich, thorpeness etc obviously I don't wish to break myself in the process but appreciate the need with tackle to get quality so it will last. Any advice would be much appreciated, I have only been a few times before so am a bit of a rookie. Thanks in advance
  4. thanks andy, i didn't think I was going that far wrong. it makes sense in my head to use a good size weight to lessen the resistance when a take comes but I just had doubt put in my head regarding the disruption of the cast.
  5. I do catch pike but I never seem to have big hauls but then again I dont seem to miss many takes. Standard length traces say 18inches.
  6. Hi all, I am relatively new to pike fishing having only been doing it for two and a half seasons now and would appreciate your views and advice. Most of my pike fishing is done on still waters at close range using deadbaits, two of my my most used methods are a straight lead and a deadbait pencil with a lead. Having thought I was fishing correctly another angler suggested that the leads I was using were far too big and heavy leads are only used casting long distances. I was under the impression that a reasonable lead was used so that when a take comes the lead isnt moved with the line being pulled straight through, giving no resistance to the pike and therefore I have generally been using leads up to 3oz. I was told that using just a small amount of shot would give a better presentation as the lead wouldn't pull the bait down into the lake bed, also the cast wouldn't be so disruptive. When I challenged this the angler said that if I fished using my current tactics I would be better off using a stem to keep the bait from being pulled into the lake bed, which isn't something iv used before. Although im sure the advice given to me was sound I would be interested in knowing what you all suggest in terms of weights used for pike fishing on the bottom. Also advice on stems if recommended, which I understand vary in length depending on the depth of weed? If it helps the waters I fish range from 6 to 15ft deep. Many thanks
  7. Great, thank you all for your advice, much appreciated!
  8. Hi all, Just after some advice on which indicators to go for please. I mainly only do pike fishing in the winter and tench fishing in the warmer months and am looking for a pair of alarms that will cater for both. I normally pike fish with a rear pike swinger and front alarm. Dont want to buy cheap tat that won't last but I also don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on something that I wont benfit from, but am open to advice, any of which will be much appreciated! Many thanks
  9. Thanks for the reply, i do have bite alarms but just wanted something to use in combination with them as i dont feel my bite indication is very effective at the moment. Would your monkey climbers be suitable do you think? thanks
  10. Hi, i have been reading the various threads regarding best bit indication for pike and see that most of you recommend using an open bail arm approach with a drop arm indicator. I am planning to follow suite and have been looking at the fox ones but it appears they do two different types, a cheaper one at around £11 and a more expensive one at around £15. Can anyone who uses either type recommend which ones i should go for? as far as i can see the only difference is that the more expensive one has a sliding weight but there may be more differences? many thanks fisher
  11. Hi, i am thinking of buying a smartcast fish finder for my pike and tench fishing. i only really fish from the bank and am either goin to buy one of the ones that you put on you wrist or attach to your rod, can anyone advise on the better choice? from reading reviews on the net it also appears that quite a few people have had problems with theirs as they have broken not long after getting it, i am slightly worried that this may be the case and wondered if anyone has any advise on them or on an alternative? many thanks fisher
  12. nice 1, ill look into it. thanks for the reply
  13. i am in the market for a new fishing chair, can anyone recommend a really comfortable recliner preferably with arms. generally used for pike or tech fishing. thanks
  14. Hi, whilst pike fishing i have often been told that it is better to have fresh deadbait, ie dont keep refreezing the bait. as i am relatively new to pike fishing could i have your views as to whether or not it really matter to the catch rate if my dead bait has been refrozen a number of times? do the pike actually notice the difference? thanks fisher
  15. can anyone adise on a suitable landing net hand for pike fishing from the bank, need it to be strong and able to shorten down for transport! many thanks
