  1. I think it also depends on how you were introduced to fishing. When first started last year i caught 4 fish in about 4 hours so i never expect to bag up or catch big fish during a session. I go fishing to relax. I set myself targets but think its a bonus if i actally achieve them. But my mate stated fishing a couple of months after me and his first session we both did really well and caught alot of good roach and a couple of carp. I told him that would be a rare day but he kept moaning when it didnt happen again. He packed up after 5 months.

  2. Another way to catch wary big fish is to feeder fish on the surface , take off the lead from your block end feeder and stuff some high density foam in the bottom tight, tape up at least half the holes and fish a shortish, 18inch or so hooklength from the feeder, the rudd compete for what falls from the feeder and you can get some nice fish doing this. Its a rod in the hand method and you need a soft tip rod as you're relying on either seeing the feeder move or feeling the fish through the tip, its good fun even when you get some strange looks when you're doing it

I was going to use a float but think gonna have to try that method now. sounds interesting to try. how light a tip do you mean? i think the lightest ive got is 1oz. will that do the job?

  3. (that's true of many in the minnow family in North America)

    Phone

can you just clear this up for me phone.

when you say minnow do you mean every fish that isnt predatory?

ive only really seen you mention predators, carp and minnows. but sometimes you call carp minnows.

is it the american way or do you mean the fish that we would call minnows (dont know the scientific name)?

  4. I totally agree that all fish should be regarded as equal when it comes to their welfare. Same as Tigger Ive seen still waters where chub seem to thrive and breed successfully.I haven't like I said enough experience to be able to say the same (or not) about barbell.

I'm sure there are plenty of Barbel Worshippers out their who argue against just still water barbell for the reason you mention,in fact simply because its fashionable/cool/seemingly knowledgeable to do so! But I would like to think that many are like me and simply dont want to see our sport "watered down" anymore.

is there any known reason why barbel dont seem to do very well in stillwaters, or is it as of yet unknown?

has anybody caught a barbel that seems to be thriving perfectly fine in a stillwater? and i dont mean just surviving. i mean flourishing into a strong population.

  5. This may sound a bit double standard but even though I can accept chub in still waters I have a problem with barbel

ive heard a few others say that.

but why are people more bothered about barbel? are they more fragile or is it because they have thier own set of 'worshippers'.

im prepared to get a bit of stick for saying this but should the welfare of one fish really be above anothers. :headhurt:

  6. i recently caught a chub in a local commercial and it got me thinking. should traditional river fish, such as chub and barbel, be put in stillwaters. or are they better of being left in the rivers.

ive heard tht in rivers chub are good fighters but this one just seemed to give in right away.

i dont know if is true of all stillwater chub or barbel, or was just this particular fish.

what do you guys know or think about it?

  7. looking at some of the latest threads this may be a sore point for some but i want to catch some good rudd.

ive only caught a few that were no bigger than about 6oz but they nice looking fish. i know a place where there are some up to 1lb and would love catch one that big. so any general tips for them would be useful.

    thanks in advance. :)

  8. ive heard that river fish often fight better than a stillwater fish of the same size and species and was wondering if this is true. the only river fish ive caught is perch and i cant say i noticed much of a difference. but ive been told that it makes a big difference with barbel and chub. is it true or does is it regional thing or does it depend on the size of river etc.

  9. im back fishing again which is a good thing but the reason why isnt. after 5 weeks training i tore a muscle or something in my ankle so the army have medically discharged me. so to get over my self pity ive bought a new korum 3G float rod and plan to go fishing tomorrow. then its a trip to the jobcentre.

  10. As an ex soldier I would just like to say " all the best for you career" & hope you keep posting. Even if not fishing, the posting will act as a distraction when it gets tough. Keep yopur chin up & listern to your instructors. Have fun & enjoy the army life. By the way which regiment / corps are you joining?

I had a great carp session while ON CAMP once as my barracks old & had barbed wire secure ' emergency water tanks' (EWS). While sitting the one outside the NAFFI one evening, I noticed fish taking bread off the surface. The next weekend returned with a basic setup & caught several 3 - 6 lb carp. So never say ' Last session' cause you never know. Eventually, once 'housework' done, you will get evenings to yourself, so use them to search the area for waters to fish. Sort out a basic tackle package to take later, something that will fit in your foot / personal locker. My fishing, in & around camp, helped me relax. Especially when I had little money & could not get home at weekends. Plus camo clothing comes free & bait items can be acquired from the kitchens, so reducing bait costs. I bet someone in there will be an angler & will help.

Anyway enjoy yourself & have a good time.

    Mark.

im going in the REME as a vehicle machanic. will try to post when i get time. and thanks for the advice.

  11. well thats it. i went for my last session and decided to trot maggots and try the occasional lobworm. managed several perch up to about a pound and one that reached 1lb 4oz :) unfortunatley i forgot the camera so cant post any photos. but thats it for now until i finish training :(

  12. leaving to start training for the army on the 30th and because of various leaving parties etc i only have time for one last day fishing. so have decided to target perch on a local small river and wanted advice on wether to trot maggots or leger a lobworm for the best chance of a biiger fish. want to meke it a good session as ill be traing for nearly a year so wont be doin much fishing for a long while. thanks in advance for the advice.

  13. hi me and a mate are thinking of going to the alderfen fishery. was just wondering if anyone had fished it before and could you give some advice on baits or tactics to use. we want to fish the match or specimen lakes but not bothered about the carp lake. thanks:)

  14. good stuff, what did the problem turn out to be?

think it was a mix of bad hook tying and a bit of bad fish fighting skills ie, not using the drag properly on the reel. but got it sorted and couldnt be happier with the results.

  15. hi just thought id say thanks to everyone that gave me advice about my carp problems. went fishing yesterday. didnt target carp but hooked 3 and landed them all. was so happy with the result :) but forgot my phone so couldnt take pictures :( the biggest was about 6lb though which isnt huge but a new pb for me :) so thanks again for the help
