  2. Hi I have recently just bought a 12ft carp rod and reel, with some floats and shot. I tried my luck the other day and caught nothing ha ha i did feel some bites but hadn't realized that I have to "set the hook" my setup was a float attached with 4 BB shots and a few more shots to weigh the line down at the end of the line. I was using sweet corn as bait (all i could get hold of at the time) my biggest difficult was casting out, i could not get the line to go further than 6ft from the rod. is this due to not having enough weight on the line? also, is the line meant to be slack from the reel to the float? I had trouble with the line getting tangled when casting out/reeling in, is there a fool proof method for avoiding this. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks david
