  1. Hawk,

Our "common land" water mark is the physical high water mark on the bank or 3 ft from water's edge - whichever is greater.

Any water that is not 100% on your land is "public water". So, most water in America is "public". Government agencies (various), by law, can post all sorts of "no use" signs that carry the benefit of law. Otherwise, knock yourself out and fish away.

Laws have become 100X100 more limiting since our 9/11/2001 twin towers attack. In the old days the discharge areas of nuclear (SP) power plants was a "choice" spot for all kinds of fishing. NOW, you can't even say the words "nuclear power plant" without being arrested. To bad - really.

I actually should have read the original thread starter as it was referring to rivers as i was thinking more of lakes etc. As a falconer i have just learnt more about shall we say Land laws as i have had too as i have been in circumstances were i did not know what my rights were.

So my thoughts on certainly still waters stands true :)

  2. Excuse me if i am a bit out of sorts here as i have not been on the forum long but fished all my life

I don't know whether the idea has been put forward or tried or is just not viable or possible or whatever but a Anglers Net syndicate or club with some waters would be such a great idea.

OK, apologies in advance for a stupid idea but i dunno what do you old timers think or am i in ga ga land here :lol:

  3. Unless it's a private fishery! In Dorset the tidal Piddle (The Royalty Fishery), tidal Dorset Stour and tidal Hants Avon (The Royalty Fishery) are all private fisheries, the clue being in the names where the king granted a private right of fishery, as is the case with The Several Fishery (not Severals!) which was severed from the land rights.

What happens if you get caught free fishing on the Royalty?

Is there some old 400 year law like you get fed to a pike or somethin. ;)

  4. I was talking to a very knowledgable angler today who's name has been around and he was telling me that in a 12 mile diameter of a area in kent there are 9 day ticket waters and when he named them i thought 'Your right' and he went on to say that everyone has atleast a 20lb minimum weight carp in it but obviously other fish. It seems people are targeting big Bream nowadays?

I agree with Budgie the rivers are a bit vague in Kent. The trouble with the Medway is its such a very old river it has eaten into the ground so much that in the summer the banks are next to impossible to get down onto the water. Most other waters in my view are more big streams apart from maybe the rother.

The best rivers i have found are definately down in the West for my type of fishing i like. I had a 15lb barbel out of the Avon and it was one of the most beautiful fish i have ever caught. Forget the size it was its shear power it had and such immaculate scales tail and head...Fantastic fish!!!

  5. EA Fisheries Guides - will list free fishing - as well as much else...

Just make sure you know who's land it is you are fishing on. And don't be fooled into thinking that 'Common Land' is anyone's land it's not. There is no such thing anymore..:)

Good luck though there is nothing better than fishing where nobody has fished before...Wonderful :D

  6. Very top section is syndicate - Lyndsay is now the contact - deffo still DT.....

    how things move on...

Exellent place mate worth that money and more if its as good as it used to be. Some biggy Pike there. In fact they must be monsters there now. I wish i was closer like i used to be.....lovely place :D

  7. Lower Itchen Fishery for me - for all the reasons given - though there are some who might think that paying nearly £25 for a days fishing isn't cheap! :P

    C.

Is the old boy still running it? i heard one of the offspring is now?. super fishing when i was there. I thought it had gone winter syndicate only? just a rumour?

  8. My experience is very similar to Den's! I had a mate who struggled and struggled but delayed getting specs so when my day came I didn't hesitate....... only trouble is my eyesight changes with the varying blood sugar levels my diabetes cause! Often I cant see with or with out my prescription specs!

So once again as the old codger says the £1 a shot reading glasses from Tesco's are the answer! I just swap around till I find the "ones for the day"! God how I took good eyesight for granted! (erm in fact health and youth full stop! :D)

You can get special pincers for style leads and the likes (which I use) but Ive also seen special dispenser/applicator for micro shot but not tried them.

We had a good day today. nothing special but a few nice perch and a really nice Bream. I took the glasses and it was good but those no10's were still a nightmare so went to no 6's and could just handle .

Good to see old farts on here. You think that when you are young you will always put a line through a hook and look across at that poor old sod and think shall i go and help him. And now you ARE the poor old sod :DB)

  9. Well taking my nephew fishing tomorrow and started setting up his float rod. Well what 15 years makes in your eye sight. I could not thread the line through the hook but more annoying i wanted a light set up so i tried pinching no 10 shot on the line. It drove me nuts!

Then using pliers i did not like the thought that the line may not be going through the groove or over tightning it. I have fished this venue many times for fish and the no10's are perfect spread out on the line.

Is there a specific tool i can use as i feel uncomftable using pliers...Or i get thiner fingers and glasses like 3ft thick!

Old blind git specific fishing shop anywhere? :wheelchair:

  10. Thank God its eased, bloody hell its been chuffing terrible, gusts of 100mph in some places here.

Went down the promanade, class, waves battering the sea defences. Wished i took my camera

Rough down here too mate. Whats up with this crazy weather. i had to laugh this old guy who is some male witch or something said it was going to be -20 at xmas. funny how these spread...'Well i tell you this old guy who predicts the weather he said this Xmas...........LOL

  11. Hawk,I to will make the effort to put something together showing you the little I have learned about targeting eels.Unfortunately my methods are not 100% eel friendly like some sugest they can be and they are also a bit dated. However they work and Im more than prepared to share.

Thanks mate...PM me . i feel like a novice but things have moved on , well some things especially carp...

  12. I have been using Lobs and Prawns as the venue I fish does not allow fish baits. I still rate low resistance free running rigs but I have become a big fan of fishing short bolt rigs made up with long shank hooks and quick silver braid in 35lb or 40lb. I often add a piece of plastic to create T bar, so the hook looks a little like a mini anchor. This does tend to help with reducing deep hooking and the long shank tends to mean the hook is still showing. I am always on the look out for better rigs but for me this has been a successful set up but it's not completely deep hooking free but most times they get hooked in the lower lip "Carp Style"

Sent you a PM mate. :D

  13. Hawk good timing :D I like to Mount on two semi barbed trebles on a 28lb trace and fish just off the marginal shelf. Jobs a goodun.

Hopefully some one will provide more constructive advice.

I used to fish zander with the old DB hooks due to their small mouths but mainly like perch they were terrible for swollowing the bait and like perch you can seriously damage some stuff down there.

What bait are we using i presume worms or dead baits perhaps?

  14. Years a go i was a member of a syndicate that backed on to the sundridge land fill. It runs under the M25 into chipstead lake. Holmsdale fishing club own chipstead lake but used to own the two lakes on the other side but it changed to a syndicate but i think it changed hands again.

It was a good couple of lakes although it stunk a bit with the landfill close. The smaller lake was literally right next to the M25.

Does anyone know now about these two lakes?

    +

The Holmsdale club has that massive chipstead lake . Anyone know much about that now. it used to be two very old venues i fished 20 years ago

  15. Over the years i have fished for just about everything but never ever really tackled Eels. Always found them a nuisance but they are usually Boot laces.

So i know there are a few eel speciman hunters on here.

What's your best methods , baits etc?

And do you know of any good waters in the South East apart from Wingham that is?

  16. I suppose this is a day for looking ahead to the coming year, so what are your targets this year?

I have just joined a local fishing club who hold matches every month on a mixture of lakes and rivers. I have only ever fished one match before in my life and I blanked. My target is to win a match this year.

I am surrounded by waters that hold big carp and catching a 40 or even 50 pounder probably wouldn't be too difficult. All I would have to do is pay my money and put the time in. However, just down the road is a river that is free to fish with my annual license and it contains large carp. Not quite as guaranteed as the carp ponds so my target is a 25lb river carp from the river Mayenne.

I have never caught a Silure (Wels catfish). I know they are to be found in the river Mayenne and also in the Sarthe about an hour south of me. The target is to catch one, size not important.

Lastly, this year I caught my first (and only) Sturgeon. Probably the best fight I have had on rod and line. I had another on briefly on the pole when Tench fishing. I would like to catch another one (or several :P )

My first year after 15 years break from fishing i do not care what i catch even a cold !!

  17. As i fly Birds of prey i have to get their weight just right to an ounce to fly them this is calculated by the weather on how much to feed them. This season has been a nightmare going from 18C and within 3 days 4C many falconers it has driven them crazy !

I know its not quite the same but the principle of catching fish in such variation of temperatures must effect the Fishing. i expect many of you fish the same venues year after year and has it effected you that much. Are you catching more of one species than normal or has the one's that you usually catch gone?

Let's be fair it has gone crazy this year. !

  18. I was in the market for some not long a go. I know many will disagree and i too to a point say you pay over the top for a badge but i came to the coclusion that the test of time is what you look for. i very rarely hear of a bad fox or delkim alarm. Someone will be along to prove me wrong but how many are out there...Thousands and a company like those two really have to keep their products up there so to speak especially Delkim i think a bit more than Fox.

i looked at many of the cheaper ones but the maths of a name you have never heard of at £14.99 and a Fox at £24.99 an exrea £10 is just the history of the alarm not the name worth it?

I decided on the new Fox M+ its basic with sound and tone so what do you need and only tone so i can hear which rod it is if i only had one i would have had the £24.99 with just volume.

My view is in life i never buy an Electrical product second hand. A car is different offcoarse but a TV toaster whatever never. You are usually out of the years gaurantee and how the hell do you know it works. You buy a 2nd hand set of Delkims on E-bay and they turn up knackered £250 right up the spout with no chance of money back. are you willing to take that risk? it may be a small one as i am sure it might only be 1 in 10 sold is duff but 'do you feel lucky?

    Just me .... :D
