  1. I think i posted this in the wrong section so here it is...

I had an account on here many years a go but i can't remember username or password. The e-mail address i used back then is different now so sending the info is obviously not there but it does say sent to my old mail address i must have used but it seems to be lost somewhere. Those back then were really days before a laptop existed or it was spanking new costing a fortune.

I guess this one is for Admin/Mods to see what they can do. It would just be nice to get back to the old name whatever it was.

I can't see a list of members as i am sure i could troll through them ans a name i am sure will jog the memory.

Can this be done....The only thing i think i have is my old e-mail i used which the forum sent successfully but like i said no good sending it there as i can't find the adress.......What a mine field!

    Thanks guys

  2. I am quite surprised over many things that have changed but one thing to me is how the gap between so called 2nd hand equipment on E-bay is not really much cheaper than new from a retailer. Years a go they where huge but the retail seems to have become cheaper.

An example was a Bait indicator that was sold for £25 on E-bay and yet the same new was only £30 and then offcoarse it is brand new!

I guess if you are a youngster or unemployed or disabled i might sound pompous and i do not want to feel you think that way.

  4. Provided you are not looking to fish at range due to the not so good line lay then you should have no problems with the reel as they have a superb clutch and are capable of handling any Carp that you are likely to hook into. They work extremely well with a through actioned rod and I often use them in conjuntion with rods between 1.5lb tc and 2.25lb tc which balance well with the reel. If you have a relatively clear swim, this type of combination coupled with a good quality line of around 10lb bs is capable of handling big fish and also an enjoyable experience. If the waters you are fishing are snaggy or have bars in the proximity of where you are fishing then you may need to have a re think but in answer to the main point of your question then the reel is fine.

Thanks guys. I have been fishing for 20 years before the 15 year break and the carp and just about every other fish has got bigger and the tackle so so different. I am a bit of a nuisance.

  5. What is it that gives that smooth and silky touch to a Tench. I don't know of any other fish that has such a lovely smooth feel to it. It makes me extra careful when handling one. It really is a beautiful fish and feels it too :)

  6. Hawk,

JMO. A reel is not a part of the "power unit" to gather fish to the bank. My friends in Mexico use Coke bottles to gather line. It is the rod/line and angler that retreive fish.

    Phone

Edit: well 'ell - I didn't answer your question. Sure that reel is fine.

LOL...Well you can't get no cheaper than that....

OK Phone what brand line can you recommend. i walked into a tackle shop and boy have things changed. Especially in the carp Angling rigs. I thought things were complicated in 1990 but jesus what the hell now not that i am really looking into that been there done that but even so...!!!!!!!.

I have still got good knowledge of how to fish but all these brands. Yes , the big ones are still there but so many more.

the drennan hooks still look good but a decent nylon line brand could you help?

    can you

  7. Don't worry hawk, I don't think anyone thought you were being serious! As for baits, as I said in an earlier post it can sometimes be a bit venue-specific, and so if you have no prior knowledge you'll have to experiment a bit to see what works; however, in my experience lobs are very consistent big perch catchers and would be my starting point, moving onto lives if I felt like I had no choice. I've never used prawns, basically because I've never had to - but others have caught big perch on them, I think mainly from commercial-type waters.

The other thing to think about is depth. Perch are not always on the bottom. I suspect that's why people sometimes fail to catch them on worms but then succeed on lives - because the worms are invariably fished on or near the bottom and the lives fished up in the water. So it looks like it was the change of bait that made all the difference, but actually it was the change of depth.

Thanks mate. I think this venue prawn in general catches most things so i guess this time of year you get the odd big one as i do know definately that a 5lb did come out and a few 4's this season and 3's are not un-common. I think though caster seems to be a decent bait and 1 caster on a size 16 has worked. It always amazes me that half the hook shows and they still take it but with 2 on i have less luck. Maggots i just do not have any luck with them for anything this time of year but then perhaps sometimes i cram the hook up so say 3 on a size 16 so maybe that's where i go wrong with maggots.

As far as the depth i must admit i fish everything on the bottom. I have never grasped the concept of fishing mid depth without the smallest off current taking my float flying away. Even with what you think is the stillest of still water like a mill pond it still moves it. Perhaps advice could be given there............Thanks!

  8. After taking fishing back up for i dunno around 15 years a go for what little tackle i had left i came across my only reel left and that was a Shimano Gt 3500 Bait runner. I used it today after all this time and what a cracker of a reel it is. maybe it's because i have only had a few sessions back so kind of think everything old is Fantastic but i remember using 2 of these with 2 powerloop 2 3/4lb test curves and they handled everything.

my quesion is though could they handle a good sized carp. Back then a 14lb was a average/ decent carp but now what it has to be a mid 20lb..(you might have to correct me).

I am not deliberately targeting carp but they go up to 35lb in my club water so would the reel struggle?

    What do you think? :)

  9. Not on worm obviously

    And not on prawns either

    Hmmmmm!

No hard feelings guys just being silly.

Seriously though you experienced guys i have just never ever caught them on the standard lobs or maggots and i am wondering if apart from these baits what do you have found works well. A friend did catch a damn big perch on a prawn which made me think.

Apologies for being a bit of a nerd but just banter... :)

  10. Too true - that's why I included the word 'genuine' ;)

The difference between a 3lb perch and a 4lb perch is enormous - 25%. The same as the difference between a 30lb carp and a 40lb carp!

A friend of mine has had a couple of 4s now, very hard won fish requiring an awful lot of effort off the beaten track. When I asked him to describe what a 4 looks like he said simply 'you'll know a 4 when you see it!'

    .

the last count buggie was 254 3lb's...that was last year so i am getting fed up with them

  11. Interesting to see the somerset ones. Some recommendations for you to try the next time your in sunny somerset:

-Thorney lakes, muchelney, near langport (Day ticket water)

-Rive Isle, at Isle brewers, near curry rivel and Barrington (Club ticket of Ilminster AA but can get day tickets)

-Perry street pond, Perry street, near chard (Club ticket)

-Chard reservoir, near chard (Day ticket water)

-Dillington pond, near Ilminster (Club ticket of Ilminster AA but can get day tickets)

These are local to me, nice places to fish. Thorney lakes has large carp, the river isle at isle brewers is great for pike, Perry street is a small carp match water, chard reservoir is home to very big carp and big bream and dillington pond has perch up to 5lb

Give me an email if you want any details

    Looks good

  12. All,

VERY BAD ENGLISH LOGIC. In America a fish weighing 3.01 is a 4 pound fish in conversation. After all, it's NOT a 3 pound fish and it is perfectly OK to "round up" for simplicity sake.

Having said that. Let me ask a general question. In the winter do you inflate lob worms with insulin(sp) needles? Works for me.

    Phone

Looking at a still water lake. I have heard prawn can work well. but i think you could catch anything with one of those :D

  13. As above. I know many will say worms but in all the years i have fishing i never seem to catch a damn thing on worms not that you cant but perhaps i am doing something wrong?

Anyway , what about good rigs etc. I have set a mission of a 4lb Perch this winter and i know this place i fish has them :)

  14. Yes a Microlite went for only £60 on Fleabay last night,I agree with Alan that the Shakespeare range of medium priced match rods are good.I also like the waggler rods from MAP.If yout interested in good second hand Hawk let me know.

    What hawk?

    Price sex etc?

  15. I'd start at the top and get a Normark Avenger :).

Tigger. i remember i think when i had an account on here last time i think you where new on here. Roles reversed now ..LOL. well i don't think to look that one up as i had a few Normark river specialists last time ... ;)

  16. i have just got back into fishing after 13 years (boy do things change). I walked into a tackle shop and was quite bewildered at the technical advances especially in baits and carp fishing.

I was always a float fisherman being still or river . I have still got a few bits and bobs left including a Shimano 3500 bait runner.

But no fishing rod so can anyone point me in the direction for a good waggler/float rod . A reasonable price and worth just getting back into the swing of things...Thanks

  17. Hello everyone

13 years a go with kids going through those horrible early teens i sold all my £2,000 worth of fishing tackle and quit. The other reason was the pure expense of fishing on day ticket waters but mainly the first reason. I had been angling for 20 years before that .

So i am back, more grey and less hair and looking forward to doing a bit more angling.
