  1. not as windy as i feared, not bad weather, just a lack of fish! lots of small pouting and whiting and a lot of weed.

MaidstoneMike and I fished Hythe nearby a couple of weeks ago and the result was much the same as yours, quite a few whiting once the tide was up. But it was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We weren't that hopeful of codling but we kept our fingers crossed for bass, which didn't materialise unfortunately, but there is always next time. :D

  2. Cheers mate,

I will speak to my fabricator and then see if he needs to demolish one. It would be great to get these up and running. Especially in remembrance of Alan.

    Thanks

    Sean

I think I have all three sizes. I will have a look in the garage as soon as I can. Without going into too much detail, I'm not in the best of health myself. When I feel up to it, I'll have a good search.

  3. I have one of the large ones and one of the medium ones that I bought directly from Alan. I have to admit though that I never mastered how to use them and would appreciate being re-instructed. I managed on several occasions to cut a hook (size 6 or 8) in two with medium one.

Slide it down the line and hold it firmly to the curve of the hook. Then bring the tool parralel with the line and squeeze the trigger. The knack is that you must position it so that the bendy bit will push the hooked fish towards the point of the hook so disengaging it. This means, you have to look into the mouth of the fish and try and see the hook or unfortunately turn the tool if the fish doesnt drop off first time. The other thing you must remember is not to hold the fish. Don't ask me why, but if you hold the fish it doesn work. Always let the fish dangle from the line. It's not difficult once you get the hang of it.

I originaly intorduced Alan to these tools on this forum about 4 years ago, when I mentioned these disgorgers and gave him the details of the engineering firm through the packaging that I still had for my disgorger.

  4. I just KNEW if I put out a big bait, you would take it Ricky :D

How's it going buddy? Are you roaming around catching Cod? Or just Pouting as usual ;)

Do you still come down to Kent?

Hello Mike, I came down to Hythe last autumn/early winter a couple of times with two mates. We had a blinder of a session on both occasions, especially the first time, when one of the blokes caught a beautiful bass of 4lb from 50 yards. You don't go ff the beach nowdays, but if you do let us know.

    Regards, Ricky

  5. A good caster (like me) follows the weight with the rod tip to reduce friction. I can cast a two ounce weight with my spinning rod 90 yards on a field.I reckon I can cast well over 180 yds with my beachcaster on a field. It's easy, no tackle to slow it down. It's a very different matter with tackle and a big bait.Iv'e yet to try the Dvice that I've just bought, well 3 actually, plus spare tubes.I'll stuff them with mussel, and whack them out about 150yds or more. Should be interesting. Only thing is, I catch the biggest fish right near the beach.
    Yeah right..... :2:

How far was that? Yeah right..... :2:
  6. my mate geoff went down the river just down from rochester and caught seven bass.

two about a pound and one of four. rest were small he kept the big one for the pot when he gutted it had mitten crabs and small eels inside. he used rag and fished from low water up, im having a go next week so leave some room for my huge bass pictures! good fishing all

Actually, a 'huge bass' might not be so surprising. My son and I fished off Gillingham Pier last year and we had good sport with schoolies. We actually had one, which was debatable, but in the interests of sport and conservation, it was carefully put back. Good luck & tight lines.

  7. yo codroamer the pier shop at deal is good also; they give my bait to the pier bloke (who you pay) when they are closed and you just give him the money; it is sometimes hassle trying to get down there when the tide is late.

It certainly restores your faith in people, in this cynical world. I just hope that some scroat doesn't rip them off one day and destroy their trust.

  8. I phoned a tackle shop to order bait for the trip to Hythe on the Kent coast for Saturday evening. When I told the owner that we wouldn't be able to get there much before closing time, the owner told me that if I got there late, they would leave the bait at a pre arranged place and asked me to put the money through the letter box! I couldn't believe my ears! They don't know me from Adam. I could have just taken the bait and not paid! When I pointed this out to them, the response was "You got to trust people, haven't you?"

It really has restored my faith in people and it's so nice to be trusted like this, when muggers kill people for a lot less money.

I wanted to identify this shop because they deserve a little back door advertising, but I have had second thoughts in case somebody a little less scrupulous might take advantage of their trust. It would be a crying shame. For myself, I will go out of my way to use this tackle shop again. If they happen to read this, thank you very much for the trust in me.

As for the trip itself, we had plenty of sport with dabs, flounder, doggies, pin whiting and rockling between three of us. Unfortunately, it was mostly small stuff. We fished about 200 yards before the boats. One of my mates kept two good sized doggies and I kept two good dabs (about ½-¾lb each) Tide was around 9pm and we fished from 7pm to midnight. There was a lightish SE wind and there was a club competition going on with 5 members fishing. The secretary told me that they all weighed in, so it was a good evening all round. :clap2:

  9. Posted on behalf of Daren. Please add all responses to this thread:

Had some good sport from Gillingham Pier last year. Used rag to get quite a few school bass, but I have to admit, we didn't catch any "keepers" But it was good bites and kept us entertained. Hope this helps.

  10. Hi there Ricky. We have three kayaks, two singles and a double. I want to take up kayak fishing, inspired by the lads on the kayak forum. We did quite a bit of yakking last Summer, and this week at Hythe. Going to take them to Wales this year for a couple of weeks. I have all the gear now, radio, depth finder, wetsuits, drysuite , trailer, boat rod.

I enjoy the excercise, but for fishing I will only need to go a few hundred yards offshore, so not a problem. I can paddle for about three hours at a steady pace before I need to come ashore for a stretch.

Havn't been shore fishing for a while, not much about.

You be careful now! You're no spring chicken anymore! Paddle for three hours? You'll get arrested by the French Coastguard!

Me and a couple of others will be down this weekend, even if it's to get our lines wet. Good luck with the Kayak'ing(is this the correct term?) Mike! See you soon.

  11. yes, the rocks at low tide.

I'm going to try the kayak off the warren in the summer. I'll probably launch at Seabrook. You can see on google earth the rocky area extending out to sea quite a way in one area. To the left of the harbour from the sea. Love to get to the seaward side of those. Also like to kayak over them at high tide with my fishfinder, see what's there.

Didn't know you had a Kayak! Didn't even know you had a canoe! Steady on lad, you ain't gettin' any younger! (only kidding)

  12. went down to sun pier the on monday to find 3 chinese fisherman fishing in strong winds.

they were catching bass but only 7-8" in length. when i went down 1 man was going to keep roughly a 6" lenght bass and i thought to my self that has to go back. so off i went to have a chat with him and what i could understand of his dodgy english. i said that fish has to go back alive NOW!!! or you will be hit with a £200. he said no and got a bit mouthy. so i said that i was the Fishing police officer and he said sorry for his actions, put the fish back alive packed up and went.

    Matt

I saw an elderly (I think Italian) guy fill a bucket with pouting around 3" inches long on Brighton Pier, who told me that they were the best eating fish when deep fried.

Who am I to argue with him? :wallbash:

  13. I was hoping someone would say how Brighton marina is fishing nowdays. Any reasonable bass coming up? I know that during summer months you can't get on there because of all the fair-weather fishermen that get there for the mackeral. Unfortunately, they are the worst culprits for litter.

  14. I hear that Herne Bay council are looking at costings for re-building the pier. Now that would be great. It was a very good mark, and if used again, anglers would attract the fish with all the bait scent, rubby dubby etc.

We used to catch thornbacks. cod, whiting, congar, bass, sole etc from the pier. If they do re-build, I hope they go the full distance, out to the old pier head. It would attract lots of anglers and visitors. There used to be a train out to the cafe at the end. I think it was one of the longest piers in the uk.

They have improved HB seafront beyond all recognition over the last few years, so this would be the icing on the cake.

    I would definitely fish there.

I seem to remeber talking about a trip to this neck of the woods with someone not too long ago

  15. Sometimes what is considered moaning or bitching is just one persons opinions and perhaps letting off steam. It certainly is not done maliciously by most people.

What is extraordinary is the reaction of some people who turn it into a personal attack against another, who has dared to criticise. And maybe I have let my better judgement slip once as well. Whether the criticism is founded or justified is really immaterial.

Just as some say that we have a choice about a certain magazine, we also have a choice whether we read postings on this forum.

How does that saying go? “I disagree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it” I don’t know who said that (no, not me) but I agree with it entirely. If somebody wants to put a measured argument against a point of view, it’s perfectly acceptable. What I find unacceptable is when it degenerates into a slanging match and even personal threats. Let's hope that it doesn't happen again. I certainly try to avoid any confrontation. Who you looking at??? (just kidding)

We are all mature intelligent people.....aren't we? LOL

Tight lines to one and all.:rolleyes:

  16. Well actually it was a plutonian who was having extra marital's with his wife, at least that's what Yorkshirman's friend with flat capped wippet told me.

Is that right? Was it Bernards wife or was it the Martians sister-in-law? That whippet sometimes gets it wrong, but I like his flat cap.

  17. I was going to post a new subject along the lines of what Sam is saying about opinions. Why is it difficult for some people to accept that people have a right to say things without jumping down their throats? Who was it that said; "I don't agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it"? There are a lot of people, not only on this forum, but in all walks of life, that just only have their views and theirs alone! Be it on tackle, methods, fish sizes or anything else, where they cannot see anybody elses view or give them the right to have a say! Very disappointing attitudes prevail.
