MaidstoneMike and I fished Hythe nearby a couple of weeks ago and the result was much the same as yours, quite a few whiting once the tide was up. But it was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We weren't that hopeful of codling but we kept our fingers crossed for bass, which didn't materialise unfortunately, but there is always next time.

I think I have all three sizes. I will have a look in the garage as soon as I can. Without going into too much detail, I'm not in the best of health myself. When I feel up to it, I'll have a good search.

Slide it down the line and hold it firmly to the curve of the hook. Then bring the tool parralel with the line and squeeze the trigger. The knack is that you must position it so that the bendy bit will push the hooked fish towards the point of the hook so disengaging it. This means, you have to look into the mouth of the fish and try and see the hook or unfortunately turn the tool if the fish doesnt drop off first time. The other thing you must remember is not to hold the fish. Don't ask me why, but if you hold the fish it doesn work. Always let the fish dangle from the line. It's not difficult once you get the hang of it. I originaly intorduced Alan to these tools on this forum about 4 years ago, when I mentioned these disgorgers and gave him the details of the engineering firm through the packaging that I still had for my disgorger.

The last time I took your advice and sprayed my tackle with WD40 it made my eyes water! Never again Mike!

Hello Mike, I came down to Hythe last autumn/early winter a couple of times with two mates. We had a blinder of a session on both occasions, especially the first time, when one of the blokes caught a beautiful bass of 4lb from 50 yards. Actually, a 'huge bass' might not be so surprising. My son and I fished off Gillingham Pier last year and we had good sport with schoolies. We actually had one, which was debatable, but in the interests of sport and conservation, it was carefully put back. Good luck & tight lines.

It certainly restores your faith in people, in this cynical world. I just hope that some scroat doesn't rip them off one day and destroy their trust.

I phoned a tackle shop to order bait for the trip to Hythe on the Kent coast for Saturday evening. When I told the owner that we wouldn't be able to get there much before closing time, the owner told me that if I got there late, they would leave the bait at a pre arranged place and asked me to put the money through the letter box! I couldn't believe my ears! They don't know me from Adam. I could have just taken the bait and not paid! When I pointed this out to them, the response was "You got to trust people, haven't you?" It really has restored my faith in people and it's so nice to be trusted like this, when muggers kill people for a lot less money. I wanted to identify this shop because they deserve a little back door advertising, but I have had second thoughts in case somebody a little less scrupulous might take advantage of their trust. It would be a crying shame. For myself, I will go out of my way to use this tackle shop again. If they happen to read this, thank you very much for the trust in me. As for the trip itself, we had plenty of sport with dabs, flounder, doggies, pin whiting and rockling between three of us. Unfortunately, it was mostly small stuff. We fished about 200 yards before the boats. One of my mates kept two good sized doggies and I kept two good dabs (about ½-¾lb each) Tide was around 9pm and we fished from 7pm to midnight. There was a lightish SE wind and there was a club competition going on with 5 members fishing. The secretary told me that they all weighed in, so it was a good evening all round.

Had some good sport from Gillingham Pier last year. Used rag to get quite a few school bass, but I have to admit, we didn't catch any "keepers" But it was good bites and kept us entertained. Hope this helps.

I saw an elderly (I think Italian) guy fill a bucket with pouting around 3" inches long on Brighton Pier, who told me that they were the best eating fish when deep fried. Who am I to argue with him?

I was hoping someone would say how Brighton marina is fishing nowdays. Any reasonable bass coming up? I know that during summer months you can't get on there because of all the fair-weather fishermen that get there for the mackeral. Unfortunately, they are the worst culprits for litter.

Sometimes what is considered moaning or bitching is just one persons opinions and perhaps letting off steam. It certainly is not done maliciously by most people. What is extraordinary is the reaction of some people who turn it into a personal attack against another, who has dared to criticise. And maybe I have let my better judgement slip once as well. Whether the criticism is founded or justified is really immaterial. Just as some say that we have a choice about a certain magazine, we also have a choice whether we read postings on this forum. How does that saying go? “I disagree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it” I don’t know who said that (no, not me) but I agree with it entirely. If somebody wants to put a measured argument against a point of view, it’s perfectly acceptable. What I find unacceptable is when it degenerates into a slanging match and even personal threats. Let's hope that it doesn't happen again. I certainly try to avoid any confrontation. Who you looking at??? (just kidding) We are all mature intelligent people.....aren't we? LOL Tight lines to one and all.

I was going to post a new subject along the lines of what Sam is saying about opinions. Why is it difficult for some people to accept that people have a right to say things without jumping down their throats? Who was it that said; "I don't agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it"? There are a lot of people, not only on this forum, but in all walks of life, that just only have their views and theirs alone! Be it on tackle, methods, fish sizes or anything else, where they cannot see anybody elses view or give them the right to have a say! Very disappointing attitudes prevail.
