    Moorhen on a floater!

    Using a highly visible (above the surface) controller and raising your line (using a more visible line such as a light coloured braid also helps) and flicking your controller can deter most birds, but moorhens are the most likely species to ignore it. They are either incredibly stupid or smart enough to ignore the "danger"; I still haven't decided which.

     

    If you have the fishing feeding and cruising well, fishing a very shallow sinking bait under a stubby float or controller usually works.

    Licence never did arrive

    It's another "new computer system" farce. They took my direct debit money on 2nd March, a phone call to the EA on 2nd April confirmed I did have a licence (they gave me the licence number) and it would soon be in the post, and a follow up phone call to them this morning confirmed it would soon be in the post as they had a huge backlog. They seemed to think this was acceptable :wallbash:.

    Nice report and pictures (only two this time :(). It always surprises me how many people seem reluctant to surface fish when others nearby are catching well on that method; the surface expert on my local lake had a jacuzzi in front of him yesterday evening but was the only one surface fishing.

    Was it on last night (Monday), if it was a tad gutted I missed it as the preview looked pretty full on with cats and freshwater stingray

    WG2? That's the problem with these small, remote commercials, the owners aren't there for most of the day so anything can go on, and you can't risk getting involved yourself. One advantage of only fishing short evening sessions is that I'm usually the last to arrive, and if it looks like there are noisy or unruly people already fishing I'll go to another nearby fishery instead.

    I've never fished it but have walked around it a couple of times for a rest when cycling. I don't think any of the active posters on here fish it. Now the sun is shining it's always worth throwing in some loose floating baits to see if anything is interested.

     

    The carp at nearby Peatling Pools are pretty active now, there are plenty cruising the margins and sub-surface further out on the two bigger pools. Luncheonmeat floatfished a foot deep and cast in front of cruising fish worked very well a couple of weeks ago (the geese/ducks were a bit too active for floating baits).

     

    P.S. Upper case is regarded as shouting and bad etiquette on a forum.

    Barbless hooks only (max size 8 for tench fishing)

    Unhooking mats to be used by all anglers

    No landing nets smaller than 30"

    Keepnets for silverfish only. No tench or pike in keepnets

    2 rods max for tench fishing

    If its Town Lake, it usually throws up some very nice fish - or did the last time I read anything about it. Hopefully there will be plenty of photos and maybe even one of Phone with a 50+ common or even a big buff if there are any in the lake.

    On July 26, 2007, the Austin City Council passed a resolution authorizing the renaming of the reservoir from Town Lake to Lady Bird Lake in honor of Lady Bird Johnson, the former First Lady of the United States and a long-time resident of the Austin area who had died earlier that month. Johnson had declined the honor of having the lake renamed for her during her life. In renaming the lake, the City Council recognized Johnson for her dedication to beautifying the lake and her efforts to create a recreational trail system around the lake's shoreline.

    Commercials are my only area of local expertise, so you've had any useful input from me :).

     

    Local rivers (on or after June 16th), canals or the larger reservoirs, such as the British Waterways ones at fisheries.co.uk, may provide a bit more of a challenge.

     

    It sounds like you had a duff 20; surely you had smaller fish that put up a decent fight?

     

    If you enjoyed Willesley then why not go back there and see if you've honed your skills sufficiently to actually catch something there :).

    Super fish and pictures. Well done.

     

    I know where I'll be fishing on June 16th :). Funnily enough I dropped my son off at karate Saturday morning and briefly walked around the main lakes and even spoke to someone on the open part of the stream, you must have been well hidden in the trees :).

     

    For others, that part of the stream is tiny, you wouldn't think it would have fish of that size and quality in it.

    How do puddle barbel rate with river barbel on the fight stakes?

     

    Unfortunately I don't know as I've never caught a barbel in its "proper" habitat as I don't river fish. Despite the contentious and often discussed issue of stillwater stocking these fish have remained very healthly and pull above their weight, I'd say they fight better than carp of the same size.

    My local mixed fish puddle was stocked with additional "novelty" fish about 5½ years ago. All species were about 3oz max when stocked. The biggest I have had recently are barbel to 2½lb, golden tench to 1¼lb and chub to 1lb 6oz. New stock green tench in another local fishery seem to be growing at a similar rate.

    . Any decent supermarket will have a vacuum pack of the pre-cooked fresh (not pickled) ones for less than a £1 in the pre-packed fresh sea food section.

     

    Some days the fish go mad for them, other days they're not interested at all, and there's been no middle ground when I've used them. Since the original post I've had a few 1lb'ish perch on them too as well as carp, tench and roach.
