  1. Elton,

If you have never caught a conger, get someone to take you to a fairly shallow water conger mark, with appropriate gear.As Scotty says, they do go nuts!!

You are going to need strong gear, and a drop net or gaff, dependant on preferences.

I tend to use a 7000 Abu, and a conger rod, although a few of the guys locally have been using boat rods where casting is not required.

Sometimes my knees are shaking by the time I land the thing!

  2. All of our congers go back alive, but the welsh lady next door to me said the nicest fish she ever had was a conger steak.

I was told the first foot after the head was the nicest- is this the same as Captain Cojones advice above? I am tempted to take one home one day!

  3. You could always get some saltwater flies, if your signature is anything to go by. If you are interested in C & R on some different species, bound to be some small pout or pollack in the harbour, which can be great fun.

Dont know the area at all, but bait wise most people would struggle to go wrong with some worms and a box of squid. 2 hook paternosters with 1/0 hooks for the smaller stuff, and pennel rigs for the bigger stuff, maybe with a whole squid on.

  4. Toerag- can you not try plastic eels weighted down instead (I am thinking the Eddystone ones) without a paravane?

If you get the wight right in that run of tide that should dictate their depth.

  5. When I went there was some better fishing offshore, but wasnt there long enough to get out.

Close in is as above- nothing much apart from floats for mullet.

If you do a search I posted a question on this a couple of years ago, with some excellent responses.

  6. I was spinning for live bait with 1/0 circles, baited with little strips of mackerel, and had good lip hook ups.

You do have to wait for the full bite, but they do work with smaller species, and lip hooked each time.

  7. I suspect you and I have slightly different takes on the fishing, but I have to agree with you on this.

Every thread I start on fishing gets casually ignored, so either no one is interested, or I am on a lot of people's ignore list.

Its a shame- think I have been on here for about 4-5 years now.

  8. I have to confess to being a purely sea fisherman, largely as a result of living on a small island surrounded by the stuff. We also dont have any pike, which would change my views!

Increasingly I find myself looking at the coarse fishers (probably wrong terminology), and some of their rigs.

So following a link on something else, came across this:

    http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/Rig-Section/Pi...adbait_Rig.html

So I was wondering if anyone had tried this, or had any other useful ideas from fresh water?

  9. Sounds like you did the right thing Scotty- better to call them out than get macho.

Glad you guys got back OK.

Toerag- will try that next time. Bass festival this weekend, so trying to avoid the congers for a change!

  10. I always think that the first point is when people say- I want to go fishing. Then they tell you they want to catch a bass!

I use that as an oportunity to tell them they will only catch them if they understand them, and then you can inform them a little on the fish, their breeding habits, and associated issues.

Wont work for everyone, but works on a few who are more willing to make an effort.

  11. I think the first thing you need to do is clear the garage- some stuff in there that doesnt relate to fishing!!

Get rid of that and you will be OK!

I suspend one of of my Caper onto the garage door frame, and then lift the other end up, balancing the YAk on my head, and slip it into a hanging sling. Does work well, and easy, but make sure the bolts through the joist are strong, and if you use rope or webbing.

Ideally use hooks to hang the webbing/ rope off of, as otherwise it may slip off the bolts. I also use old lobster pot lead lined ropes (which I found while fishing) which helps the rope hang down as you are sliding the kayak in.

We are also moving house soon, and going to try and get a waist high place to leave the kayak in- saves my back and neck!

  12. So having read this, and with some sole about locally, I have bought a box of size 6 hooks.

Rig wise, two hook pat seems to be the order of the day.

    My questions are:

    - long or short snoods?

    - presumably worm for bait?

    - should I try and keep the bait moving, or static? I have read on here somewhere about both methods for flatfish, but cant remember the drill!

    Cheers

  13. Good post Cliff. I met up with some of the kayak gang from AN at the weekend, and we had a great day out. Good to meet some different people, and they were a good bunch.

Caught a few mackerel, exchanged a few friendly jibes, and tried some new areas.

Hoping to use the mackies at the weekend to chase conger, and maybe the odd big bass. Have been experimenting with using thicker mono for the congers, in the hope of getting something else as well.

I definately got less bites on the wire, and it was plastic coated as well.

Conversely am also going to get those size 6 hooks out to try for some sole as well!

There is even talk next year of trying to get some of the Jersey and Guernsey kayakers to meet.

Some of you may think wrong forum, but when I first joined, I met some new people to fish with through AN, both locally and in the Isle of Man. Thats what this place is about as much as anything- a bit of fishing, a bit of banter, and sharing a few experiences.

  14. 20 miles- I should have started training last year!

Serious point though- you did mention the RIB's that carry yaks on them, which could be useful between a group to get between Jersey and Guernsey.

I think the rest is achievable if we can get the tides right!
