  1. Dont think we have that any big sharks on UK beaches! Be nice though!

This is a really good topic, and one I have been looking at before. I have had a look at the kingfisher site, and was wondering if anyone had any pictures, or could shed any light as to how these are rigged?

The pictures seem to showa second swivel, and unsure as to how the rig fits together.

    Cheers

  2. I looked at them both and went for.... a Caper! Despite what Simon E says, the width does add to the stability.

I know they are not as quick as a Prowler, but they are more manoevrable IMHO, and I do find mine very stable i.e. no wobbling.

I would imagine that the Caper is a little quicker than the Drifter, but with all the electronics Somerset carries, he needs the extra buoyancy!

  3. I am generally quite calm on these forums, but some mofo who says he has to sell his catch to afford the boat- sort your life out.

I dont own a Porsche because I can afford to run it.

I own a kayak because I can afford that, and not a boat. Your argument is exactly the same short sighted logic applied by many 'amateur' gill netters, who then complain when the fish run out.

If you cant afford it- dont do it. And if you are unlicensed, I hope you get caught- we are all traceable in the internet.

If you are a wind up merchant- dont join the comedy club.

  4. Somerset- Elton did compile all the stuff re sea fishing into an index on here somewhere, so maybe at some point the same will happen for the yaks.

Maybe at some point the weather will get better too- been forced into taking Monday off in the hope of getting out!

  5. James- I think Challenge is based in Whitby (or somewhere cold like that), but not the US!

Challenge- thought that was a link to an electronic lure that was being touted a few years ago!!

Looks interesting. My parents brought me back a lure from alaska called a 'buzz bomb' which is also based on vibrations, so must be their thing in that area.

  6. I am sure someone will tell me I am wrong here, but the main thing I would think about is weight.

You have to get it on and off the car, and they are not that light! I think Thule does a system where you can slide them on from the back, which should make life easier when you are on your own.

Dont know much (anything) about the tandem canoes, but have a look on Anglersafloat for excellent info.

  7. Sounds good mate, and given your background, my advice is probably teaching you to suck eggs.

Without knowing the marks, if its sandy, I would stick to worms for volumes of fish, and fish baits for the rockier areas.

Sandeels can be used in both I reckon, and pennels can be good for these.

If it is surfy, may be worth taking a light rod, and trying some spinning.

  8. Richard,

If you are based in Guernsey, they are a few others on this board from round there who may be able to help.

I am from Jersey, but you are welcome to take my Caper out! For what its worth, went for that over the Prowler as it is more stable, which is important in the CI waters, but most have Prowlers I think.

Getting through the tides is an issue, and here the Prowlers would be better.

    Cheers

  9. Absolutley nothing because I clcked on the button! As I was saying:

    - Dont use hooks or bait that are too big- 1/0 hooks are generally big enough, and slivers of bait, not chunks

    - Try a two hook rig (they can be bought pre made) for more fish.

    - Worms seem to work well in the day, which is when most new people try (night is generally better)

    - Have a go with a float- they are good fun, and maybe worth a try fishing off of the bottom.

    - Dont try and cast for the horizon- you probably havent got a shockleader attached (if you ask what one is, you havent got one!), and you dont need to generally to catch fish.

I am sure someoen will come along with some more specific advice soon.

    Tight lines

  10. Andy,

I believe the Guernsey 'Bay of Granville' issue comes down to a disagreement, which meant that only commercial boats licensed to do so can fish in Guernsey waters.

The agreement itself, I believe, allows free- er access to local waters, which means more French can access Jersey waters than Guernsey.

I am unsure as to whether it affects the ability of Guernsey fishermen to fish outside of their area.

I am sure someone will put me right if I have got that confused.

Back on topic- so are you organising the response to this?

  11. Cheers Andy- so back on topic.

Licenses are issued to UK commercial vessels, to fish in non EU waters, but they are worried about the charter boats coming over with rod and line!

Presumably these are the same boats that were in the press last years as hammering stocks, which I think got even the local commercial boys annoyed.

A little re- alignment of thought required I think.

  12. Andy,

You mention that there are a whole host of boats at Beau Blondel- I thought it was limited to Guernsey only boats, or are those individual boats licensed locally?

I just wondered that if you had a load of non- local boats licensed to fish in your waters?

I know this is a little off topic, but if that is the case, there is one way to reduce fishing pressure? I suspect that I have missed something in the 'Bay' agreement.

    Kind regards

    Grant

  13. Its not the imposition of bag limits that worry me- its the lack of corresponding action to protect the fish stocks that I find laughable.

If they were proposing bag limits hand in hand with a comprehensive set of conservation measures, I think this would be difficult to argue against.

The situation at Beau Blondel is appalling, and will all end with vastly diminished stocks for the channel islands as a whole.

I wouldnt worry about licenses in Guernsey being the thin end of the wedge for the UK- they pay little attention to the Channel Islands unless coffers are low.

  14. Ok, so have a spare inflatable kayak, and was going to lend it to my friend to use, and as such was thinking of buying another paddle for me.

Question is, should I buy a flash one, or just the normal £25 job? As I see it, a more expensive one will only be worth if it it is a lot more efficient?

    Would appreciate views.

    Cheers

  15. Try small circle hooks for self hooking the bream- its what they use off some of the charter boats over here.

Otherwise, you will just have to hold your rod, and be quicker with the strike!
